Darshan Nalkande started playing cricket in his home town, Akola, at a young age. At 13, he was selected into Vidarbha Cricket Association's residential academy, Nagpur. To pursue his cricketing dream, he moved to Nagpur. Throughout his formative years, his parents backed his dream and today Darshan has ensured that his parents' hardships were not in vain. At 25, he is an integral part of the Vidarbha cricket team in all three forms of the game. Darshan was part of the Punjab Kings set-up for three years but did not get a game. In 2022, he moved to Gujarat Titans and made his IPL debut against his former side. His maiden IPL wicket - his Vidarbha teammate Jitesh Sharma. In IPL 2023 Qualifier 1, he got the wicket of  Ruturaj Gaikwad but he had bowled a no-ball. How did a coach like Ashish Nehra help him move on from that mistake and focus on the game ahead?  What has changed in the Gujarat Titans' camp under the captaincy of Shubman Gill? Darshan Nalkande reflects on his journey and the future on IPL Uwaach with The Hindu's sports journalist Amol Karhadkar… What women want - Can Nirbhaya Centres do better to respond to gender violence?

This December we mark 11 years of the gang rape and death of Jyoti Singh – or Nirbhaya. As a response to the Delhi 2012 incident, the government started the Nirbhaya Fund and Nirbhaya centres across the country. In this episode, we look at what women want versus what they get.  Today, there are over 733 Nirbhaya Centres–or One-Stop Crisis Centres–across India; one in every district. However, these centres rarely function as hospital-based crisis centres i.e., they often operate in parallel with the police rather than in coordination with the hospitals. Experts say this is a missed opportunity, as hospitals–not the police–are the first point of contact for survivors. Hospitals are safe spaces and women are more likely to reach out for help here.  In this episode, Mahima Jain visits the One-Stop Crisis Center inside the District Women's Hospital in Akola, Maharashtra. This centre has used it's position as an opportunity to help violence survivors. With the help of its (now former) Medical Superintendent Dr Arati Kulwal, this Nirbhaya Center works with the hospital staff to identify survivors and help them. The hospital staff too was trained to identify signs and symptoms of gender-based violence. Is it time to relook how Nirbhaya Centers function? Let's listen to how Akola's One-Stop Crisis Center works, and the lessons all Nirbhaya Centres can learn from it. Finlanda are deschidere spre colaborare și ajutor. Rezumatul complet al discuției cu Laura Eiro și ideile principale se regăsesc în format multimedia pe digitalination.ro. Guests: Sheeba Philip Ministry/Business: Akola   Many of us have a vision for what we want our career to look like. But God has a way of changing our hearts and messing with our plans to achieve His purpose for each of us. Sheeba started her career as a chemical engineer working on construction sites for Merck. God moved in her heart on more than one occasion, leaving her in what felt like the wilderness. Today, Sheeba Philip is CEO of Akola, a globally inspired jewelry brand built to champion women around the world and empower them to get out of poverty and provide for themselves and their families.  Sheeba wrestled with integrating her faith and work early in her career. She attended Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and was asked to lead the Faith and Work initiative. As she wrestled through what it looks like to live a more integrated life with other believers, she realized the importance of leading with love at work through patience, kindness, and gentleness. But God had given Sheeba a heart to do work with a purpose from the start. After getting a business degree, she left Merck to work in brand management for Kraft, International Justice Mission, and JC Penney. When JC Penney went through another restructuring, Sheeba found herself in a real wilderness experience, trying to figure out what's next. After two years, God led Sheeba to Akola, and suddenly all of her varied experiences connected and made sense. Akola means “she works.” God didn't waste any of her experiences but brought her through them “for such a time as this” to make a difference for women in Africa. Our careers can be a great adventure with God, and Sheeba's career is a great example. Sheeba has learned, and we can learn from her story, that God is faithful and He can be trusted. We can take bold steps of faith as we sense God's guidance. Resources from today's show: Hear from Sheeba at the Boldly Conference, a faith + work conference by women for women happening on Friday, October 21st, 2022, live in Dallas or by livestream anywhere!   Be sure to pick up some beautiful jewelry with a mission from Akola.co! 700: Lack of Tests & Ventilators: How Rural India is Facing Covid Surge

The Big Story

Covid infections are now spreading fast into India's rural areas where 65 percent of the country's population live. And India's rivers are witness to the kind of devastation the infection is bringing to India's hinterland. A mass pile of shallow graves were found along river banks in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district. Dead bodies have been floating up in rivers flowing through Bihar's Buxar district and Ballia and Ghazipur districts in Uttar Pradesh over a reported shortage of firewood as the number of Covid-related deaths are on the rise. In fact, Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar has reported that over 2,000 bodies were found floating or buried along Ganga in UP in a 1,140 km stretch. Even though officials in some districts have claimed the dead bodies don't belong to locals, this is certainly an indication of Covid is ravaging the countryside.Although the number of covid cases maybe showing a decline in some of the worst-affected cities, numbers from rural areas are indicating a spike in cases. In India's top hot spot, Maharashtra, for instance, where the situation appears to be stabilising in cities like Mumbai, reports say that at least 32% of the state's daily cases are now coming from the rural or the peri-urban pockets — from districts like Akola which has over 6,000 positive patients, or Washim which has over 4,000 patients or Gondia which reported a death toll of 631 patients as of 16 May. If you look elsewhere at other high-risk states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan — the rural districts of all these states are also grappling with high infection and mortality rates currently. There there are several factors contributing to the worsening situation. Reluctance over testing, lack of awareness of Covid norms, migration from urban areas to rural villages, insufficient and inaccessible healthcare facilities — a dangerous combination of all these factors is leading upto an emerging covid crisis in the rural areas now. And to understand the magnitude of this crisis, for this episode, we got in touch with three Covid volunteers who explain how the situation is on ground and the delicate state of healthcare in some of India's rural areas. Stopping just short of a lockdown, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday, 21 February announced a slew of new rules given the consistent rise of COVID-19 cases in the state. The state has been consistently reporting cases over 6,000 for the past three days and recorded 6,971 new cases on Sunday -- the highest one-day spike in last 121 days since 23 October when the state clocked 7,347 cases. Issuing an ultimatum to people in his 30-minute address on Twitter on 21 February, CM Thackeray warned them of a lockdown if COVID-19 protocols were not followed. “It all depends on you, whether you want a lockdown or you are ready to follow the norms to avoid it,” he said in his address. As of now, districts such as Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Pune, Nashik, Parbhani have restricted movement of the people. Chapter 28 describes the incredible ways in which Baba drew his devotees to Shirdi. Baba pulled Lala Lakhmichand, the Burhanpur lady and Megha to Shirdi, like a boy who pulls a sparrow with a string. Lakhmichand and the Burhanpur lady dreamt of Baba, while Hari Vinayak Sathe sent Megha to meet Sai Baba. A devout man named Lakhmichand once dreamt of a saintly person, and a few days later, he attended a Kirtan by Das Ganu in Dattatreya Bijur's house, and became totally devoted to Baba. That very night, his friend, Shankar Rao, asked him to accompany him to Shirdi. Lakhmichand eagerly accepted, and borrowing 15 rupees for his expenses, he set out, with his friend, to Shirdi. At Shirdi, he experienced Baba's compassion and all-pervasiveness when Baba asked, "What was the necessity to borrow 15 rupees to make this pilgrimage?" Baba disapproves of His devotees borrowing money to go on pilgrimages. Next is the story of the Burhanpur lady. Unfortunately, her name is not mentioned. She dreamt that Baba came to take Bhiksha of Khichdi from her. After some time, her husband got transferred to Akola. So, without further delay, they went to Shirdi. However, for the first fortnight, she was unable to make her offering of Khichdi to Baba. So, one day, she prepared the Khichdi and went to the Dwarka Mai, but the curtain was drawn. Not minding this, she went up and served her Khichdi, and Baba ate it with great relish. Now for the story of Megha, who was so greatly transformed that Baba wept on his demise. Here is how Megha was first drawn to Shirdi. One Hari Vinayak Sathe was working in Kheda, where he met Megha, a Gujarati Brahmin from Viramgaon. Sathe was interested in Megha's spiritual welfare, and urged him to go to Shirdi and meet his Sadguru. Megha was reluctant to go as he felt that he would descend into hell if he bowed before a Muslim. However, he did eventually go to Shirdi, and as soon as he entered the Dwarka Mai, Baba flew into a rage and threatened to beat him, and drove him away. Nonetheless, Megha stayed on and performed service to Baba in a quiet manner. After a few days, Megha left Shirdi only to soon return for he considered Baba to be the living form of Lord Shiva. He ceaselessly chanted the name "Sai Shankar, Sai Shankar" from morning till night. He prayed to Lord Shankar with a childlike innocence, and as Shankar was fond of bael leaves, he was determined to worship his Sai Shankar with Bilva Patra. As there were no Bilva Patra in or around Shirdi, he trudged two or three miles every day to procure them from the forest. He also collected wild flowers that Baba loved, and after worshipping all the deities in the village, he came to the Dwarka Mai, and performed ritualistic worship of Baba. Megha also performed the noon Aarti for Baba. This he did by standing on one foot. He held the Aarti platter in his right hand, and with his left hand, he rang the gong of the bell. Baba evidently liked the way he performed Aarti, and would delay the Aarti if Megha was late. On Makar Sankranti day, Megha was keen to give Sai Shankar a bath with the holy water of the Godavari. He pestered Baba to allow him to do so. Baba gave in to his requests and agreed. At once, Megha set out barefoot with an empty vessel, unmindful that he had to walk back and forth a total distance of 16 miles. In those days, the road to Kopargaon was a treacherous one. The road was an uneven dirt road full of holes and pits. It was lined by dense trees, where dacoits hid and waylaid the unsuspecting traveller. Megha, however, was not bothered by these thoughts, as his heart was filled with devotion and joy. After fetching the holy water, he asked Baba to be seated so that he could bathe Him. Baba tried His level best to dissuade him, but Megha was determined. Finally, Baba said, "Megha, the head is the most important part, so just pour water on my head." However, Megha, in his zeal, poured the entire pot all over Baba. Megha was then astounded to see that only Baba's head was wet, and the rest of His body was dry. Baba, on one occasion, gave Sakshatkar to Megha, saying, "Megha, draw a trident." A few days later, a Ramdasi presented Baba with a Pindi, which Baba presented to Megha. Thus, Baba blessed him and also strengthened his faith in his Ishta Devta, Lord Shiva. Upon Megha's demise in 1912, the Shiv Ling was housed in the Gurustaan. Having narrated this incredible story, I will take the opportunity to narrate some more Leelas. The first Leela is about Nanasaheb Chandorkar's father, Govind Chandorkar. Once, it so happened that there was a misunderstanding between Govind and the local Muslims. Upset with this, he told his family members not to associate with any Muslim. In his family, his word was law, so his family members distanced themselves from their Muslim friends and neighbours. At that time, his son, Nana, was away on a tour. When he returned, the family briefed him about the turn of events, and of his father...

She’s found a way to help hundreds of underprivileged Ugandan women earn a living wage by making the beautiful Akola jewelry now carried in retail stores including Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, & Saks Fifth Avenue. According to Inc. Magazine, “Underwood is a clear example of a servant leader practicing conscious capitalism to transform the lives of impoverished women and families.”Her vision began at age 19 when she and two friends from Southern Methodist University decided to take an adventurous teaching trip overseas. They landed in Uganda where Brittany met a woman who changed her life! Sarah, in poverty herself, was caring for orphans in her home. These were street children with no money, no shelter and no way to get an education. Brittany was inspired to roll up her sleeves and help.It started with a proper home for the children and quickly grew into creating a sustainable work opportunity (The Akola Project) for other women like Sarah so that they could provide for themselves, their families and these children.Today, Akola provides training, work opportunities and holistic education programs to over 500 women in Uganda and Dallas who care for 4,000+ dependents.#FemaleLeaders #NewBusiness #FemalePreneurs #FairTrade #Sustainable #AkolaProject

The Theresa and Eddie Show - Life and Business With the Woman On TOP

14 million people were displaced and 1 million people died during the Partition of India. Neena Newberry shares the story of her family’s history, a time of insane violence because of a religious partition line; the separation of India and what is known today as Pakistan. That was just one of the many  struggles her family has overcome before finding their way to freedom and peace. After her parents married and had children, Neena’s dad, who was highly educated, migrated (without his family) to England where he worked night shift at an ice cream factory. When the family was reunited, the suffering didn’t stop in England. Racial discrimination and ignorance affected their children in the form of bullying and physical violence. So, they picked up and moved to the US, where they had family connections and community. Such an inspirational story of courage and perseverance. Today, Neena is the Founder of Newberry Executive Solutions where she coaches executives (VPs and higher) for some of the world’s best organizations. She is a twelve-time award-winning executive coach, speaker and author. A former Deloitte Consulting executive with over 25 years of business and leadership development experience, Neena excels at simple, proven solutions to achieve unprecedented business and career results. She launched Newberry Executive Solutions to pursue her passion for helping women be successful. Over 75% of her clients get promoted, and she gets rave reviews from Fortune 500 companies.
