Ernie Lombardi retired from Major League Baseball in 1947 and was not enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame until 1986. Many theories abound as to why it took Lombardi so long to get in. But, facts are facts, and his enshrinement was way over due, after all, Lombardi did things as a catcher that few before, or since, have accomplished. Despite his lack of speed, he might have been one of the slowest to ever play the game, and that could have been one of the reasons it took him so long to make it to Cooperstown, he retired from the game with a .306 career batting average. Twice he led the National League in batting average. In 1938 he hit .342 and won the MVP award. In 1942, at the age of 34 with the Boston Braves, he again led the National League in batting with a .330 batting average. A 7-time All-Star, during the 5-year stretch of 1934 through 1938, Lombardi hit .305, .343, .333, .334, .342. He had a career OPS of .818. On this episode of SFH, guest Robert Baker and I look back at the 17-year career of Ernie Lombardi, the highlights, and the depressing low lights as well. Sox fans! Welcome back to Good Guys Talk Back. Are you having some fun with this team right now? The White Sox have already passed their win total from 2024. They are playing with house money and it has been fun to watch. Sox should have swept the Angels but instead won their 3rd series since the All Star break. Many players are contributing and Luis Robert, Jr. will continue to be one of those players. Can the Sox win 63 games? 65 games? Let's hope the new core continues to grow and that it will force the organization's hand in the offseason. Thanks for the continued support. Go Sox. #WhiteSox

Kurt Kitayama finished a sizzling weekend with a final-round 65 to win the 3M Open on Sunday, beating Sam Stevens by one stroke for his second PGA TOUR victory.Kitayama, who shot a career-best and tournament-record-tying 60 on Saturday to enter the final round within one of the leaders, birdied six of the first eight holes to build a cushion on a 91-degree afternoon at the TPC Twin Cities.“Getting off to a start like that kind of helps settle you down,” Kitayama said. “Final round, second-to-last group, theres definitely some nerves.”Joe Ryan delivered his worst start in nearly two months during a 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals and Byron Buxton exited Saturday night's game because of left side soreness. It was a tough day for the Twins' two All-Star players, and an ugly performance for a struggling team attempting to stay afloat in the wild-card standings.“We've been playing some pretty good fundamental baseball,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “Today was not that.”Buxton didn't return to the field after the sixth inning, but Baldelli said Buxton was “relatively upbeat” when they chatted during the game. Buxton, who made a leaping catch at the center field wall in the first inning, will undergo medical imaging Sunday morning.
