Hanson, PhD Lake Park, Minnesota BS, University of North Dakota MS, University of Colorado PhD, University of Colorado, Boulder To say that former ADVANCED SPACE ACADEMY® crew trainer, Andrea Hanson, has been persistent in pursuing her interest in Science and Engineering may be the greatest of understatements. Although Dr. Hanson's enthusiasm for Space Life Science began during her freshman year at college, she credits her time spent as an instructor at SPACE CAMP as the launch pad for her research career in that field. Following an internship with Boeing Satellite Systems, Dr. Hanson worked as a graduate student with BioServe Space Technologies at the University of Colorado. It was here that she realized the dream of so many trainees, when five years of research culminated in a space shuttle experiment that flew aboard STS-118 in August of 2007. Today, Dr. Hanson continues her relentless pursuit as a post-doctoral research scientist and engineer in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her primary efforts are focused on developing technology to monitor musculoskeletal health in astronauts during long-duration space missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Dr. Hanson is a walking testament to what is produced at the fantastic intersection of drive, determination and passion and is a role model for anyone with a dream.

In 1986, drug activist Rick Doblin founded the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, commonly known as MAPS, as a non-profit organization specializing in research and education. MAPS has dedicated the last 36 years to changing the way people think of, talk about, and consume psychedelics through research, education, and advocacy.  One of MAPS training certifications offers the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research Certificate Program for skilled therapists and researchers. Today's guest, Andrea Hanson, is one of those MAPS certified therapists able to provide psychedelic assisted therapy. Here is quick clarification. MAPS uses the term "psychedelic" to refer to both the classic psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, peyote, ayahuasca, etc.) and to those drugs specifically termed "entactogens" and also known as "empathogens" (MDMA, MDA, etc.).  Andrea is a licensed mental health professional, and I loved our conversation.  I always want to present alternatives to consider for a holistic approach to wellness and healing and this is a good point to remind the audience that I am not a doctor, healthcare practitioner or therapist. What I share in today's episodes are some of my personal experiences and opinions around psychedelics. Andrea and I talk about the MAPS certification process, psychedelic assisted therapy using MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine, the benefits of recreational, the concerns of therapeutic misuse, and the importance of integration. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000, Andrea empowers people to become their own wellness hero, instead of the victim of a disease. Andrea combines her experience from five years of life coaching and 16+ years of living with MS to teach her audience how to create a customized approach to health that includes life balance, mindset tune-ups, and stress management so that they can feel in control of a life they love. Andrea Hanson has two bookS: 1. "Live Your Life, Not Your Diagnosis: How to Manage Stress and Live Well With Multiple Sclerosis"  - written for people newly diagnosed with MS (Applicable to anything, though). It talks about the major ah-ha's that she had in my own health care and how to manage stress- for good - because stress management is so important for MS. This is about the deep work you can do - thought work and mindset shifts - to get you to shed a huge layer of everyday stress.   2.  "Stop Carrying the Weight of Your MS - The Art of Losing Weight, Healing Your Body, and Soothing Your MS"-  teaches the reader how to navigate the relatively new world of health-hacking and extreme diets to stay well. It shows them how to be their own "wellness hero" and find what works for them (we're all different), and to stop being confused about conflicting advise on what to eat and how to live.    If you would like to receive free electronic copies of both of her books, email Andrea at andrea@andreahansoncoaching.com.  Email her with "BTBHA podcast" in the subject line.   Check out her website at: www.andreahansoncoaching.com
