How can you make your podcast more accessible to people who are deaf and hard of hearing? It goes without saying that we don't know what we don't know. When it comes to how people with auditory differences—such as those who are deaf and hard of hearing—interact with our podcasts, the only way to learn how to do better and make those episodes more accessible is to ask. And that's exactly what this episode does. Kellina Powell is an author and speaker who helps deaf and hard-of-hearing women express themselves with confidence in a hearing world. Tuck in your earbuds and get ready to listen and learn as Mary and Kellina discuss the nuances of engaging with podcasts as a hard-of-hearing listener. How big a role does video play? Is all the effort we put into creating transcripts paying off? Kellina weighs in with helpful transparency from first-hand experience about the accessibility questions you've always wanted to ask. Learn from Kellina's unique perspective of the audible world: How your microphone affects sounds picked up during recording The difference in how hearing and hard-of-hearing people filter ambient noise How we can make our transcripts more accessible to those who need them How to respectfully ask questions about accessibility Links worth mentioning from the episode: Episode 84 “Simplify Your Workflow to Keep Your Podcasting Passion Alive with Craig Constantine” - https://www.organizedsound.ca/simplify-your-workflow-to-keep-your-podcasting-passion-alive-with-craig-constantine-episode-84/ Engage with Kellina: Buy Kellina's book, “Everyday I Am Just Deaf” - https://bookshop.org/p/books/everyday-i-am-just-deaf-life-in-a-hearing-world-with-deaf-queen-boss-kellina-powell/18522433?ean=9781778112102 Connect with Kellina - https://www.kellinaempowerment.com/ Connect with Mary! In this episode, we meet Kellina Powell. Kellina is a young entrepreneur who loves to help people with their personal growth and educate others about the deaf community. Little do people know Kellina is actually a hard-of-hearing person. She became deaf at the age of 4. She recently graduated with a psychology degree and is now starting her own online coaching business while launching her book! So as educators, we have had students in our classes who have special needs, and often with those students comes an Individual Education Plan (IEP). For me, it wasn't often that I actually engaged my student in conversation—the student for which the IEP had accommodations. But in this conversation when Kellina shared how having those conversations and monthly check-ins with her educators and her teachers would've helped her in accessing her education. It made me think that these documents are living documents, not just forms with rules and requirements that I must follow. If I had rather seen it as that, a living agreement between me, the educator, the parents AND the student that needed these accommodations to access their education I think of how much better an educator I would have been.  You can find Kellina on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deafqueenboss/ and at her website https://www.kellinaempowerment.com/ If you are interested in learning more about the book Kellina has published you can find a link here https://www.amazon.com/EveryDay-Am-Just-Deaf-Hearing/dp/1778112102

TwoSistas and its MindsetMonday, February 13, 2023 with Kellina Powell. Kellina is an Author / CEO / Coach and Speaker. She is a young entrepreneur who loves to help people with their personal growth and educate others about the deaf community. Little do people know Kellina is actually a hard of hearing person. She became deaf at the age of 4. She recently graduated with a psychology degree and is now starting her own online coaching business while launching her book! To say that she overcame obstacles is an understatement! Many would say that along the way, those obstacles gave her a further opportunity to set the groundwork and define on her terms what her “hard” would be. She shared details on growing up and transitioning from a deaf school to a public school education and the hurdles she encountered along the way. Thankfully, Kellina had very supportive people in her family. From a teacher that refused to wear a microphone so that Kellina could hear the lessons to a guidance counselor who encouraged her not to pursue her goals and dreams to go for the bigger picture. Kellina did not accept the status quo; in fact, she created it! From not being accepted to any of the colleges and universities she applied to, then to only find out that said guidance counselor “forgot” to put her grades in, she took that as an opportunity to pursue her dreams even more so!! Kellina would show ALL that she was not limited by her disability, but embraced it in such a way where she could empower others. Kellina's outlook on mindset is spot on! She recently graduated with a psychology degree and is now starting her own online coaching business while launching her book! As Kellina mentioned, keep your circle tight with the right people around you to always support and encourage you - that is how you should define your success! Thank you so much Kellina! At the age of 4 due to negligence on the part of a daycare center, Kellina lost her hearing. Her energy is captivating and I enjoyed our chat, as I'm certain you will. About Kellina: Kellina is a young entrepreneur who loves to help people with their personal growth and educate others about the deaf community. Little do people know Kellina is actually a hard of hearing. She became deaf at the age of 4. The best way to prevent any barriers is by saying am unaware of your disability how I can help? Not every disability is seen. Myself for example people would say wow no way your deaf. That is not a correct way to approach someone.

In this edition of the way out we've got a truly wonderful and insightful interview with Kelli Martin, a dear friend of mine whom I had the pleasure of meeting inside the rooms of one of my favorite 12-Step fellowships. There is an old saying in the rooms of recovery to describe someone who has allowed their sobriety and recovery to permeate their entire being, mind body and soul. It goes like so “You know, that so and so wears their sobriety like a loose fitting garment” – and that's exactly the feeling I get every time Kelli and I get the opportunity to talk Recovery. Kelli's journey to recovery was not easy, perfect, or always pretty – she had to persevere through some incredibly difficult stuff as a child. She had to shed old ideas about God and life that were not serving her. She had to come back to the rooms after a wicked relapse and be intentional about reconnecting to a higher power and getting involved in the 12-Step program and fellowship. She had to find peace with the fact that her two adult children still, after nearly a decade of sobriety, will not have anything to do with her. Kelli's story proves to us that we can have meaningful, enduring, and satisfying lives in recovery that are not perfect fairy tale endings. You're in for a real treat way out casters – Kelli is the real deal and her story delivers an undeniably rich combination of spiritual truth, relatable experiences, and practical wisdom we can all apply to our own recovery tool kits, so Listen Up. The Other Serenity Prayer God, grant me the serenity To stop beating myself up for not doing things perfectly, The courage to forgive myself because I'm working on doing better, And the wisdom to know that You already love me just the way I am. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-way-out-podcast/message
