When we think about boundaries, we often think about how we relate to others. But what about boundaries with ourselves? How we relate to ourselves is just, if not more important, than how we relate to others. We need to get clear on our relationship with ourselves first, which is why this episode is all about strengthening internal boundaries: self-talk, self-regulation, self-care, self-soothing, and self-love. He co-created one of TV's funniest shows. He still felt like a failure in his 30s. This is comedian Neal Brennan's story about conquering toxic self-talk. We all tell lies to ourselves about ourselves, usually in the form of vicious inner criticism. Neal Brennan, seasoned comedian and one of the brilliant minds behind “Chapelle's Show,” confronted his inner critic on video for our entertainment. Despite being instrumental in one of the most successful comedy shows of all time, there was a time when Brennan didn't think he had much to show for himself, especially not as a solo entertainer. The eventual demise of “Chappelle's Show” led him down a dark path of self-doubt and, then, rediscovery. Brennan worked 12-step programs, ventured into the world of psychedelics, and even tried magnetic brain manipulation to break out of his despair. Now, he has a new perspective on the value of going it alone. Turns out, it isn't quite so bad. About Neal Brennan: Three-time Emmy nominated writer, director, producer, and standup comedian Neal Brennan has become a force in the comedy world. An across-the-board talent, Neal has found success in almost every creative vein in the comedy landscape. Hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as “Hollywood's Comic Whisperer” and lauded by The New York Times as having a “hip-hop and Frontline aesthetic,” he has collaborated with top talent both in front of and behind the camera for three decades. Neal's most recent one-man show Neal Brennan: Unacceptable enjoyed a sold-out run in NYC in 2021 with The New York Times offering “Brennan starts off with a regular joke format before turning toward introspection as he exposes his doubts, neuroses and vulnerabilities. And he remains very funny as he does so.” Neal's critically acclaimed first off-Broadway one-man show 3 Mics also enjoyed a sold-out NYC run in 2016 with musician John Legend serving as Executive Producer with Paste Magazine gushing “It will floor you in the best way possible.” In a break from traditional standup comedy, 3 Mics saw Brennan alternating between three separate microphones; one for traditional stand-up, one for one-liners, and one for short confessional monologues covering everything from managing his depression to his difficult relationship with his father. Both one-man shows were taped as stand-up specials and premiered on Netflix to much fanfare and critical acclaim. Neal co-created Comedy Central's legendary Chappelle's Show, for which he received three Emmy nominations. Together, Brennan and Dave Chappelle wrote and produced virtually every sketch on the show themselves. A longtime writing partner of Chappelle, Neal was a standout speaker in his televised Mark Twain Prize ceremony, wrote on his Emmy-winning 2016 Saturday Night Live hosting turn, and co-wrote the cult hit feature Half Baked. Neal also served as a Creative Consultant and on-air correspondent on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, for which he was personally picked by Noah to be his final guest. He was Executive Producer on Chris Rock's special Chris Rock: Tamborine, Consulting Producer on Ellen Degeneres' special Relatable, and collaborator with Seth Meyers on his White House Correspondents Dinner speech. In addition to standup, writing, directing, and producing, Brennan has also directed popular commercials for Sprite, Netflix, Best Buy and Nike. Some moments create a “before” and “after” in life. Whether it's a circumstance we live through or a person we encounter, we see the world and our lives differently after these experiences. In choosing the most memorable moments to go back to, I thought about, “What were the conversations that changed my own life and parenting?” Don't forget, we are walking together down this path of motherhood! I'm sharing these conversations again because they have impacted my journey in encouraging, clarifying, and simplifying ways. Are you tired of setting goals and falling short? Do you find yourself constantly trying to make rapid transformations, only to fizzle out a few days later? You're not alone. In today's episode of The Fit Mess podcast, we discuss how focusing on rapid transformations instead of a slower evolution may be holding you back. Here are some of the main concepts covered in the episode: The importance of questioning what you believe and the stories you tell yourself A new perspective on the idea of taking small steps toward constant improvement The power of cumulative improvement and compounding returns We also talked about the importance of taking small steps toward constant improvement. As the quote from Ryan Holiday's book, “Discipline is Destiny” states, "if the first step is just showing up, committing to doing something each day then the next step is finding something to focus on, getting better at each." This is where cumulative improvement meets compounding returns, and it's where we can harness one of the most powerful forces on earth. By focusing on evolution instead of revolution, we can set ourselves up for success in the long term. It's important to remember that progress takes time and consistency, and that's what ultimately leads to success. So, next time you're setting a goal, remember to take it one step at a time and focus on the evolution, not the revolution. What does strength look like to you? Does it look like white knuckling it, holding your breath? Or does it look like putting your oxygen mask on first, and then attending to the needs of others? We all want to, need to be strong for those around us. But my guest this week reminds us there is a cost to being certain kinds of strong. Aundi Kolber is an author and therapist and her new book, Strong Like Water, helps unpack what true strength looks like and feels like and how to get there. In our conversation she encourages us in the practices of self-compassion and grounding and helps us see how white knuckling it is actually detrimental to our relationships and if we will pay attention to ourselves we can show up better for the people we hold dear. Mel Schilling knows a thing or two about confidence - as the resident relationship advisor on Married at First Sight she's helped guide the show's couples through some rather rough patches. But long before she became a talking head on TV, Mel spent over 20 years as a psychologist and success coach teaching everyone from CEOs to business owners, actors and athletes how to be the best they can be. Now, she's put all that advice into a new book, The C Word (Confidence), and she's here with us today to share her top tips for shushing that inner critic and channelling your superpowers.
In this episode, Todd Creager discusses how the practice of mediation can quiet your inner critic. Your inner critic is that voice inside your head, a running tape that tells us things that are not always constructive.Sometimes your inner critic can help keep you out of trouble or help us when we make a mistake…but most of the time it's not constructive.Listen in as Todd shares:How meditation slows you down so that you can start paying attention to your thoughtsHow it helps you not get so caught up by when the inner critic tries to take over your thoughtsHow it gives us a sense of separation that allows us to decide if we are going to listen to the inner critic or notAnd much more!TAKE ACTION:============Todd Creager, LCSW, LMFTTodd is a sex expert and therapist in Huntington Beach. Are you excited and ready to contour and beat your face to the gods? Do you feel like it takes away and diminishes the natural beauty of a woman? Or do you see women in makeup and feel critical, like she must be hiding something, she's being phony or superficial? When it comes to being confident, looks do matter, but maybe not for the reason you think. Mally Roncal is an entrepreneur and celeb makeup artist that exudes levels of confidence and beauty anyone would want. She touches on why embracing what makes you different, what makes you unique, and sometimes what makes you feel the most uncomfortable is a power only you can harness. There is a connection between our inner beauty and the physical. You are not defined by one or the other, and there is no shame in celebrating yourself the way that makes you feel most confident.Beauty isn't about other people, it's about you and feeling good and dressing up and highlighting your beauty in the way you choose to feel and look your best.At this Rad Con Live event Lisa is joined by incredibly confident and strong women such as Danielle Canty of Bossbabes, Nicole LePera, and Eve Torres Gracie from Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The conversation gets open and extremely vulnerable. Discussing aging and insecurities around beauty, scars, and self-worth isn't easy to do openly, but as women we need to be able to have these conversations. If you struggle with your appearance or catch yourself judging yourself and other women for the choices they make and don't make in relation to beauty and living above the standards, this is a must watch!SHOW NOTES:0:00 | Introduction Mally Roncal0:19 | Badass Inside and Out4:13 | Embracing Your Differences11:43 | Be Your Own Beautiful28:02 | Ditch Your Inner CriticQUOTES:“It can be your power. We all walk through seasons of transition, whether we leave something behind by choice or it was chosen for us. Life after a disruptive event or during life transitions can feel like “starting over” just as much as a move clear across the country. You may be asking the question, “who am I here?” even in familiar places and routines. Author Shauna Niequist encourages us in what to hold on to and what to let go of, through seasons of loss. She equips us with three tools for the journey - curiosity, self-compassion, and courage. We discuss how prayer can tenderize an angry heart, and Shauna shares how hanging on to writing and hospitality, even when they felt like impossible disciplines, helped her journey forward through grief and change. “One of the simplest things that I like to share with people is, if you're wondering if it's inner chatter or inner dialogue, ask yourself if it's helpful.” -Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer In today's episode, Coaches Gabriella Dennery MD and Jill Farmer discuss how to quiet your inner chatter. We have all experienced inner chatter. It's that little voice that tells us we aren't good enough or we can't get that job we want. It's important to distinguish the difference between inner chatter and inner dialogue. Inner dialogue is the voice inside that is helping us to prepare for important things, like rehearsing our wedding vows, as Coach Gabriella explains. One is helpful and the other is not. And there is a whole lot more to know. So tune in to get some practical tools to quiet the inner chatter and embrace the inner dialogue starting today. Are you interested in healthier eating habits? Have you been worried about your relationship with food? In this episode, we dive into the world of binge eating, overeating, and other eating disorders. Today, I talk with Glen Livingston, Ph.D., a veteran psychologist, and was the long-time CEO of a multi-million-dollar consulting firm that has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. He talks about his experiences with eating disorders and weight loss. We also discuss how to reframe eating habits and ignore the voice of cravings. He also shares how he concluded that you cannot love yourself thin. We get actionable tips to help us break our own unhealthy eating cycle. Questions I asked: What is binge eating? Can you tell us about your personal eating journey? How did you break the unhealthy eating urge? Can you tell us about your techniques for beating “the pig”? Why is it important to identify the bad thoughts about food, and name them something negative? Can you tell us how emotions relate to overeating? How can we fix those justifications from our inner pig? What are some things your inner food demon would say to justify eating? Why should we not have an all or nothing mentality? How do we reframe our thinking in a positive manner? Give me your best three tips for quelling cravings? Where can everyone find you? Topics Discussed: You can't love yourself thin. Actions that don't align with goals. Stopping cravings. How to get our brain to focus on other things. Unhealthy eating. Rewiring your brain. Binge eating. Avoiding misinformation about unhealthy eating. Recognizing the bad thoughts. Making negative thoughts into positive thoughts. When you are in your writing zone, you are using the right side of your brain. This is the creative part of your brain. Whereas when you are outlining, researching, and editing you are using the left side of your brain. This is the logical part of your brain and also where your inner critic resides. Therefore when you try to write and edit at the same time, your inner critic can easily shut you down. For example, your inner critic might say, “You’re not spelling that right. Who are you to write a book when you don’t even know how to spell? This is horrible. You might as well stop now and not even try to write this book.” And on and on it goes. We’ve all been there. So, let’s not let our inner critic get the best of us. Amen? 5 ways to quiet your inner critic and stay in the writing zone: Highlight an area that will need more editing or research later. You can do this by using a different color or highlighting the text. If you’re writing with paper and pen (or pencil) you can draw an asterisks or arrow next to it. Turn off spell check. Spell check can be a constant distraction because it shows you where your potential spelling and grammar mistakes are as you write. It is important to self-edit your work, but I don’t recommend doing it when you’re in the writing zone. So if this distracts you, turn it off while you’re writing. Here’s how in Microsoft Word: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/turn-spell-check-on-or-off-e2805461-77d4-4832-b006-061163c8d01a Here’s how in Google Docs: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/57859?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en Use a text editor or distraction free writing tool that doesn’t highlight potential edits like your typical word processor. Turn off your computer screen. Yes, some writers say they actually do this when typing to avoid the distractions. I’m not sure I could write this way, but I wanted to at least mention it. Talk to your inner editor. Let the editor part of your brain know that you will get back to the editing later. Right now you are writing and need to focus on one task at a time. “When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.” Mark 4:39 NLT We need to tell our inner critic “Silence! Be still!” - the Greek word here implies putting a muzzle on a dog. Everybody has that voice in their head telling them that they're not smart enough or not capable enough. It's the inner critic telling you that you will never achieve anything good, so it's better to just stay in comfortable, safe places. Since our experience with the inner critic is typically negative, the first thing we often want to do is to drown it out. But the inner critic brings with it an opportunity for an And to flourish: let it talk and let it quiet down. In this episode, I explore the role our inner critics play in our lives and how they can help us go to the places where we can grow. I share my experiences with my own inner critic and consider the sources of the inner voices in our heads that discourage us. I discuss some of the questions you can ask yourself to get to know your inner critic better and the steps you can take to manage fear. I also explain why you shouldn't totally eradicate your inner critic or your imposter syndrome and discuss how you can use them as a compass towards growth and development. “Whenever our inner critic gets loud, it means we're moving meaningful things to us and the things that can help us grow.” - Erin Baker This week on Life in the AND: Where our inner critic and impostor syndrome come from How the inner critic is trying to protect us from negative emotions Why I believe you shouldn't completely eradicate your inner critic or your impostor syndrome Using your inner critic as a compass to a place of growth and development Recognizing the other side of fear and moving beyond our inner critic Externalizing our focus to overcome the inner critic Finding the deeper voice of purpose and meaning Questions that can help evaluate the fears the inner critic is protecting you from The reason you need to understand the source of your inner critic Related Content: What Would You Do if You *Were* Afraid? When I die I want my legacy and what I’m known for is that I helped people, like you, quiet your itty-bitty-shitty-committee and courageously become who you want to be so you can live your most fulfilled life and love yourself unconditionally through your journey. So, I’m going to guide you through an exercise that was given to me by my friend Scott Feinberg, that blew my socks off and honestly has been super helpful to quiet my inner critic and rewire my brain patterns. We all have the itty-bitty-shitty-committee, and we’ve probably followed it was too often or at least entertained it’s stories far more than tuning into our True Self and heart. When it shows up, we do all sorts of things to muzzle it, ignore it and try to get rid of it. But what you resist persists. That negative voice of doubt and scarcity get louder the more you try to silence it. Imagine if you actually listened to your inner critic during every decision. You never questioned it. You always followed it’s advice: So, when it said, “You can’t do that” you didn’t. When it said you’re underserving of your dream, of love, of respect, success, you believed it. Think about all of the ways the inner critic sabotages the very things you desire: “You can’t, you shouldn’t do this, you should’ve done that, you’re too old, you’re too young, you’re not smart, you don’t have the money, the time, resources, or support, you don’t deserve love, you’re unworthy, who are you to think you are, it’s already been done, you’re not enough.” Envision the end of your life. What would have, or not have? What are the opportunities you missed because you were fearful of failure? What are the outcomes you didn’t receive because you were afraid of success? What about your relationships? How do you feel? who are you? what would you regret? You followed that voice, every step. What do you have to show for it? And guess what your inner critic says to you then? “You should’ve taken those risks. You should’ve lived your dreams. You’re not enough.” This is a mind blowing experiment because it shows us how destructive listening and following the inner critic can be to our dreams and our self-worth. But, we listen to the inner critic far too often now. It’s undercurrent is fear. The Inner critic is the scardy cat frenemy, who wants to protect you, but it’s terrified. It’s fearful of failure. It’s fearful of success – what if it goes well, then what? So, it keeps you stuck. Fear and excitement are different sides of the same coin. Physiologically, when you experience either, your breath may quicken or get short, your heartbeat gets faster, you may feel queasy or uneasy, your palms may sweat. Physically, they may feel the same, but it’s your perspective and your lens of how you view the experience that differs. Fear paralyzes you. Excitement creates momentum. So, what if we did the opposite of what we normally do? Instead of trying to push down and ignore the inner critic, you lean in. You listen to your scared overprotective friend. You hold space for it like it’s a scared child and try to understand where the fear is coming from. You don’t have to follow it’s advice, but you listen to it and give your inner critic a big hug. Fear is your internal GPS guiding you to your biggest dreams and who you want to be. So, the next time your inner critic starts to shout and be heard, pause, hold space for you listen to it’s fears. The more you resist, it persists. The inner critic usually makes blanket negative vague statements, which are super scary and undercuts you. This time though, hold space to understand why your inner critic is so afraid and visualize if you didn’t take it’s advice and pursued your dream, what’s the worst outcome that could happen? It usually isn’t as bad as we make it in our head. Then, visualize the best outcome - you got everything you desired and dreamed of by pursuing your dream. Much more expansive and inspiring isn’t it! Then envision, if you actually listened to all of the advice and followed the inner critic how empty and unfulfilled your life would be at the end. What’s the worst that could happen if you followed every fear-based advice? This outcome is much worse than either of the outcomes of following your dreams. And guess what, your inner critic would still be second guessing you, should-ing on you and telling you that you didn’t do enough. So, why not go for it? It’s going to take time to rewire your brain and your belief patterns from fear to excitement. You’ve been going down the same path. It’s worn and easy. It’s scary to carve out a new path. It will take work, effort, patience, tenacity, and resilience. You’re going to want to go back to that worn down path of least resistance, even if it’s uncomfortable. Each time you become aware of your inner critic, be present to your fear, and make a choice to move from courage instead of fear, you lay down a new path to the life you desire and the person you want to become. This is the self-love and worthiness you deserve. You have all of the answers within you. You are enough and you matter. I would love to hear from you! If you’ve ever ended the day feeling like a failure and critiquing every misstep, then this episode on practicing self-compassion is for you. As a licensed marriage and family therapist and life coach, Kim Fredrickson has counseled and taught others about self-compassion for years. When she received an unexpected terminal diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis, a rare side-effect of the treatment she had received for breast cancer, she wrote a book to leave for her children on giving that same compassion to the grandchildren she may never meet. When people feel ashamed, they blame other people because they feel like if I really look at my shame then I’m going to collapse inside. That’s why self-compassion is desperately important because kids feel shame a lot. They fail at everything at the start. What we chat about: Kim’s story of receiving a devastating diagnosis after completing treatment for breast cancer How she’s chosen to spend the years she has left with her family The new book she wrote for when her children have kids called “Give Your Kids a Break: Parenting with Compassion for You and Your Children” How it’s a process to develop a compassionate inner voice Applying grace and truth to every situation in our lives Variety of temperaments–some that are harder on themselves than others.
