Challenges on her home farm prompted Karin Stark (pictured) to pull together her first National Renewables in Agriculture Conference and Expo in 2019. Now, this year's event will be in Bendigo. In what is a first for Victoria, the conference and expo will be held at The Capital Theatre in View St, Bendigo, on Wednesday, July 23.The expo opens at 8:00 a.m., and the conference follows at 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.On the National Renewables in Agriculture Conference and Expo website, it says:"This event brings together farmers, agriculture and energy consultants, peak bodies and Government representatives to share stories of on-farm renewables, their business case and discuss what's driving the transformation of energy use in agriculture."Large scale solar and wind developments present opportunities for farmers and regional communities if planned well with meaningful engagement around benefit sharing. These topics plus combining farming and solar, termed agrivoltaics, also forms part of the yearly Conference program."Ms Stark has urged farmers to attend the event and hear the keynote speaker, the Energy Program Director from the Grattan Institute "Are we there yet? The country's economic transformation".

ARTi and Iowa Women in Agriculture are both organizations native to the State of Iowa. It makes perfect sense for us to meet and share perspectives. ARTi team member and graphic designer Mechi (left) shows off biochar results to members of Iowa Women in Agriculture at their August 2022 conference. Who Are the Iowa Women in Agriculture? Link to their website here. The organization's heart center of women's roles in farming has a foundation that goes back decades. Founding member, farmer, Iowa native and published author Cheryl Tevis got her M.A.in journalism before becoming managing editor of Successful Farming magazine (Link). During her time there she wrote on women's viewpoints on agriculture as well as supporting the business side of farming and child safety on farms. Her acclaimed short story titled We Kill Too Many Farm Kids was published in 1989. See more information about Cheryl's work with child safety on farms at this link. Previous president of Iowa Women in Agriculture Deb Marcellus Schuler aslo has extensive farming and business experience. She is a partner with the farmland brokerage, management, and appraisal company Smith Land Service, Co. Deb has spent 14 years as the director of the Cass County Fair. Iowa Women in Agriculture was established with the intention of assisting female farmers, landowners, and agribusiness professionals. The goal is to assist women in developing their knowledge, abilities, and connections within the community in order to help them reach their financial goals and give back to the agricultural community that is near and dear to them. A volunteer board of directors oversees the operation and plans and implements all elements of their services and programs, including the annual conference. We have mentioned Cheryl and Deb, but all the other members have considerable experience in farming, business and in the numerous related fields that come into contact with agriculture. And, of course, all of them are women. 2022 Iowa Women in Agriculture Conference Central to IWiA's work is their annual conference. ARTi had a chance to join them at their 17th Annual, August 4, 2022 event with the title Women Power Up: Countdown to Success! This year the conference highlighted a pre-event tour of the Cedar Covered Bridge (Link), a genuine bridge of Madison County referring to the 1996 romance movie as well as a tour of the Winterset Cidery (Link). The main event featured talks from Dr. Lisa Schulte Moore, professor of Natural Resources and Ecology at Iowa State University, Angie Treptow from Farm Credit Services, Rena Striegel on Best Practices for Family Farm Relationships and lots more. We chat about hangovers, what's up with the energy sector (and who's getting the handouts), and the government simply refuses to deliver a vaccine.   Hangovers It was RAHU’s first birthday! Shoutout to the Renewables in Agriculture Conference. Energy sector The International Energy Agency dropped a new report saying that fossil fuels are bad. Climate change-denying former Federal Minister for Finance Mathias Cormann was elected as head of the OECD. The “Green Energy Fund” can now be used to fund fossil fuels. The Australian government is funding a new $600 million gas power plant. The power plant will run at about 2% capacity, about 150 hours per year. Luckily, it looks like it will just be a chance to hand money to donors. Jeff McCloy, owner of the land that is flagged for the plant, is a major liberal party donor. He was the the only “stakeholder” to objected to land protections koalas. Update: Oh also he has known the head of the company responsible for the project for 20 years. The world’s seven largest economies have agreed to stop funding coal projects. The Labor party have found it very difficult to criticise the government. Keith Pitts Keith Pitt, minister for Resources, Water, and Northern Australia has vetoed a wind/batter power station near Cairns. Keith Pitt is a battery denier. The Queensland state government has stepped in and provided funding instead. Delivering a vaccine The government is continuing to fuck up the vaccine rollout. Only 25% of aged care workers and 4% of people in disability care facilities. If you want a vaccine, you can pretty much get one now. Update: Nope. The media is reframing the botched vaccine rollout as instead that people are afraid of getting the vaccine. Shoutout to Health Nerd on Twitter for pointing out that this isn’t really what the data says. Big wins! Deliveroo has lost a case against the Fair Work Commission, now holding up that their workers should be defined as employees instead of contractors. Shoutout to the Transport Workers Union and Diego Franco for winning this case! Solidarity with the staff at Better Read than Dead who have entered into bargaining talks with management, after previously being met with threats of termination. Congrats to the Save the Inks campaign for pushing back on QLD’s restrictions!

Jamie Tuuta, keynote: Chair of the New Zealand Tourism Board, which is responsible for marketing New Zealand as a global destination. He is inspired by the opportunities for New Zealand to be an exemplar for other countries. He is also the Chair of Māori Television, Te Ohu Kaimoana (the Māori Fisheries Commission) and Taranaki Mounga, an ambitious project with a vision to restore ecological resilience to more than 34,000 hectares from the mountain to the sea. As the former Māori Trustee and CEO of Te Tumu Paeroa, he administered 100,000 hectares of Māori land throughout the country. Jamie is passionate about investing in innovation and increasing the economic and environmental performance of New Zealand’s primary industries, particularly the Māori pastoral and fishing sectors, and developing the capacity and capability of Māori. Michelle Galimba, keynote: Michelle runs Kuahiwi Ranch w/ her brother, Guy Galimba. Their family ranch provides locally grown beef to supermarkets, farmer’s markets and restaurants on O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island. She grew up on dairy farms in Hawai‘i and has been involved with her family’s ranch since it started on abandoned sugar-cane acreage in the early 1990’s. Having grown up in agriculture in Hawai‘i, she has seen first-hand the stresses and constraints which make farming and ranching particularly challenging. She is interested in the key role that agriculture, small farms in particular, plays in addressing the big challenges of our time: economic inequity, political dis-enfranchisement, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Acres U.S.A.: Tractor Time

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2018 53:39

Hosted by Ryan Slabaugh This episode is a bit unique from the others, which are usually done in the comforts of my office back in Greeley, Colorado. For most recordings, it’s me, a microphone, an interview guest and my dog snoring in the corner. If you need the full picture, I even prop a sign up in my windowed door that says, “On Air.” But that’s really just for me – it makes me feel official. But so does this scene where I am today. Today, we are broadcasting from Belize, specifically, Belmopan, Belize, at the inaugural Tropical Agriculture Festival. We first met one of the organizers, Beth Roberson, a Belizian farmer, in Columbus, Ohio, last year during our annual conference. Beth left inspired to start her own educational conference down here, picked our brains a bit, and recruited some of our speakers and former Tractor Time guests like regenerative poultry specialist Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin and Regeneration International’s André Leu, among others. Let me set the stage a bit. Belize is a small country of about 350,000 people, just south of Mexico and east of Guatemala. It’s known for having the second largest reef in the world off its coast, and for being an English colony until the early 1980s. The country, very proud of its freedom, is still finding its feet. The Guatemalan president threatens them with invasion, and England still has a small standing army there as a reminder to their neighbors. Belmopan is a small town of a few thousand, and wears a few scars. The main roads are paved, but most are not, but a fountain roundabout greets visitors on the Western Highway. A bar-restaurant called “Cheers” greets guests as they arrive into town before a roundabout — I met the owner, and she told me she also runs a “small” farm behind it that includes horses, sheep, cattle, goats and chickens, and yes, she composts from the restaurant. On the other side of the highway, the entrance to a national park. Inside the town, a large agriculture grounds with stages, test gardens and plenty of native trees. This is where the festival was held this week. The event started with the national anthem, sung by an 8-year-old local schoolgirl. It’s clear from the anthem what the country does not want — tyrants and colonizers. And it’s clear that they want to be a free country, although they are still grappling with which economy will drive its future. The tourism economy, which favors hotels and airports and large ports, or a more local economy, where manufacturing, agriculture and other jobs will fill the gap. Agriculture, though, will have some part. It has to. Or at least, it’d be silly not to. Pineapples, mangoes, bananas, jackfruits, etc. From any city, it doesn’t take long to be in the country, where anyone would be taken in by the variety of flora, fauna and wildlife, which range from toucans to jaguars to crocodiles. Our first hour in the country, as we pulled into our hotel, the sounds of howler monkeys greeted us. (You’ll have to listen to the podcast for the full effect.) The next day, the conference began. We heard a resounding call to action from Ronnie Cummins, on the board with Regeneration International, which was followed by two days of educational speeches on five different stages, ranging from permaculture to seed saving to agritourism. All were rooted in how Belize can transform its agriculture into one of the world’s best. And no matter what, you have to give something to a country that starts its weekends on Thursday nights. Here’s what clips you can find on the podcast. Also, you’ll hear some thumping in the background, and truck noise. I apologize for that recording issue – (I wasn’t counting on so much foot stomping on stage when I set up the microphone, nor could I do much about the nearby highway traffic.) Ronnie Cummins, Board Member of Regeneration International Here’s that talk from Ronnie that opened up the conference. It’s about 16 minutes, and full of fire and fury.  Taylor Walker, Biodiverse Systems Designer Next, a highlight I recorded from Taylor Walker. A jack-of-all trades who designs gardens and permaculture environments, including Naples Botanical Gardens, Inland ecology Research Group, Sanibel Sea School and others. In Belize, he is managing Tropical Agro-Forestry farms. I’ll play a few minutes of his talk, as he walks about 50-60 people in his class through specific plants that grow well in Belize, like bread fruit.  Christopher Nesbitt, Regenerative Agriculturist Christopher Nesbitt, a regenerative agriculturist, has spent 30 years restoring a piece of damaged land in the Maya foothills. His land is now filled with more than 500 species of plants, all of which are harvestable. His talk was about his work. Here’s just a piece about that biodiversity.  Santiago Juan, Agritourism in Belize Santiago Juan, born and raised in Cayo District Belize, owns and operates a resort farm in the country. He spoke about agritourism, and how Belize can use its organic lands, pristine wilderness, and local food production to create a unique, authentic experience. One side note: his talk was not without some controversy, as some Belizian farmers weren’t too sure they wanted hoards of camera-toting Westerners posing with their pigs. But alas, the discussion assuaged some fears, and again showed what is to be gained, or lost, in such a wonderful country, one that is still building itself into an autonomous, self-sustained citizen of the world. (And sorry for the popping on this audio. It was lunch time, and the nearby passing trucks’s jake brakes kept blowing out the microphone.) That’s it — and a few rambles from me. Thanks for reading and listening. Find the Tractor Time podcast in the iTunes store, or at www.acresusa.com, or at ecofarmingdaily.com. It’s a bunch of other places too. Thanks for helping grow our food   – have a great week.
