We spoke with Moira Mangiameli, Director of "Boy" at Snap Productions at the Ghost Light Theatre, and Actor Jey Nelson, who plays Samantha and Adam as the lead role in Boy, which is opening February 2nd. Moiria and Jey talk to us about this complex play written by Anna Zeigler. The play is based on a true story of a person who was born male and due to a tragic accident during his circumcision, was raised female. The well-intentioned plan came from the doctor, who believed gender was based on how a person is nurtured, rather than on purely nature. As the main character grows up, unaware of all of the facts about their past, they battle emotionally with their feelings about themselves and try to reconcile with the information they have been told. Performance dates for “Boy” are February 2nd through the 4th, 9th through the 12th, (the 12th is a Monday performance for the convenience of people in the industry), and 16th through the 18th. Snap! is holding valuable talkbacks after the February 2nd and 9th performances. The ASL performance will be February 9th. CONTACT INFORMATION FOR SNAP! The Berkshire Theatre Group production of "Photograph 51" is an intriguing portrait of British scientist Rosalind Franklin and her often overlooked role in the discovery of DNA's double helix structure.Director David Auburn said of the play, “Postwar England. In a small lab at Cambridge, the brilliant and iconoclastic scientist Rosalind Franklin plays a critical role in the discovery of the structure of DNA. But will her contribution be obscured by history and the scientific establishment? Anna Ziegler's play takes us on a riveting intellectual and emotional adventure, and I'm thrilled to be directing a cast led by BTG favorites Rebecca Brooksher and David Adkins."David Adkins, David Auburn, and Rebecca Brooksher join us.

Cocktails with the Canon is an interview-based podcast series, by The Old Globe and co-hosted by Artistic Associate Lamar Perry and Literary Manager/Dramaturg Danielle Mages Amato, that seeks to interrogate the American theatre canon. Presented through a series of conversations with various artists about their experiences with the “traditional” Western canon of dramatic literature, the podcast explores how that canon includes and excludes certain writers, groups, and aesthetics, ultimately asking the question: how can we expand the canon and create access for all? The podcast also investigates the playwrights’ personal stories and their hopes for the American theatre, as well as the works that are considered canon within their individual communities. Listeners should walk away from Cocktails with the Canon feeling like they’ve just left a night at the theatre and a gathering with their community over drinks and food. In 1952 she used X-ray diffraction photography to examine the intricate structure of DNA, but her trail-blazing work was never recognised. Threatened by her brilliance, Franklin’s rivals scandalously stole her research and were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the double helix.A massive hit on the West End, Anna Ziegler’s Photograph 51 relives the chase to find ‘the secret of life’ amidst all the inherent ambition, sexism and isolation of the 1950s, while shining a spotlight on an unsung hero. This intriguing new play is a moving portrait of a brilliant British scientist, and a delicate exploration of what is sacrificed in the pursuit of science, love and a place in history. On this episode of the Yay, Norman and I talk to Cynthia Lagodzinski, veteran actress, whom I shared the stage with when we did Skin Of Our Teeth at the Douglas Morrison Theatre – Cynthia will also appear at the DMT in the show Ah Wilderness in February, and she'll be in Sojourn, the science fiction play at the Pear in March. My good friend, Nancy Tung, is running for District Attorney for San Francisco. I've worked with Nancy for several years and I would be thrilled to have her running the DA's office. Nancy understands that the office of the District Attorney isn't a stepping stone – it's a public trust on behalf of the people. I've personally seen Nancy prosecute corrupt cops, consumer fraud cases and public integrity. San Francisco needs a DA who cares, who has compassion for people of all walks of life, and who won't hesitate to put criminals in jail. If you're a citizen of San Francisco, you have a choice of who will make San Francisco a safe place to work, play and live – I'm choosing Nancy Tung, and you should too. Sexual assault, sexism and harassment in the work place is getting its due in the news, but in ACTUALLY, currently on Broadway at the Manhattan Theater Club, playwright Anna Ziegler examines whether colleges are any more objective than our criminal system. It is nearly impossible for women of all races seeking justice for rape and sexual harassment in our criminal system. Men of color are also considered "guilty until proven innocent." What happens when these two issues collide? And on a college campus? Ziegler speaks about the challenges of judging these cases to her big break, which she credits to Nicole Kidman starring in the West End Production of Ziegler's beloved PHOTOGRAPH 51. Ziegler's works often touch on loneliness, love, and, most recently, ambition, which she deftly tackles in THE LAST MATCH, which is also currently on Broadway. Loosely based on tennis stars Roger Federer and Novak Djokic The Last Match is a "must see" at The Roundabout Theater Company. We also spoke about writing a television series for HBO, based on ACTUALLY, and another for AMC/Sundance. If you can't make it to any of the numbers regional, national and Broadway productions of her nine plays, well, Oberon Books published the first collection of her works Anna Ziegler: Plays One.
As Princeton freshman students, Tom has a strong sense of his good looks; Amber wants acknowledgement from her peers that she is pretty. They meet at a party, they drink, and the boundaries become blurred. The issue of consent is a central theme of Actually, (play written by Anna Ziegler, directed at the Geffen by Tyne Rafaeli) and how the issue evolves depends largely on what each character's experience has been. Does handsomeness bring privilege? Does a strong support system determine privilege? Gender dynamics, race, societal perceptions, measures of success all come into question and the conversation will have a lifetime affect not only on the characters but the audience as well. Memories play tricks and recall can change. For Tom and Amber, there is dissonance in their story but not in the concrete activity. In this podcast, Aubrey Hicks, LaVonna Lewis, Oliver Mayer, and John Sonego discuss the themes and how familial background/experiences can modify a truth.
