We all know the feeling: you're driving and over the sound of the radio, you hear something you've never heard before. You turn the radio down, and it's still there. That sinking feeling is almost as bad as when you spot a police car in your rear view mirror. Whatever's making that noise, it's going to cost money. And as Las Vegas is a car city —almost no one walks, a big reason being it's so hot much of the year— we all have car problems.

I was very excited to speak with a local superhero, Cathy Heying founder of The Lift Garage here in Minneapolis, MN. The lift is a non-profit organization that performs car repairs for those who are homeless or are low-income. Cathy was a social worker and her own words "a church lady" who at the age of 38 decided to go back to school and become an Auto Mechanic. She talks about The Lift, what it is like to go back to school with a bunch of 18 year olds, the challenges she faces and her goals for the organization. The Lift helps folks get back on the road at a fraction of the cost that other shops charge. There are many things that we take for granted and having a functioning vehicle is one of them. They are doing amazing things. Be sure to check out The Lift's website www.theliftgarage.org to help. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womenbehindthewrench/support

My guest this week is the epitome of an underdog. You know, the type of guy who has his back against the wall but against all odds always manages to emerge victorious! Born in Cuba as a navy brat, he is most certainly the opposite of what often defines the subculture and lifestyle of military families. His behavior is quite the contrary - in fact he is the true essence of an entrepreneur. You see, today's guest started his fashion career on the ground floor of Canada's most iconic menswear department store where he developed an affinity for textiles, garments, and innovating the way men looked at fashion. The interesting thing about him is that before that moment he wasn't really a fashion guy. Actually, he was a self-taught auto mechanic who lived that South Florida surf life. It wasn't until 2009 where his life took a different path that led him to fashion. Want to hear this guy's fascinating story? Sit back and enjoy this week's episode with Mike Paul. He joined me on the pod to chat about his unpredictable path to becoming a bespoke tailor, how his experience living through the 2008 financial crisis has helped him navigate Covid and how he plans to grow his business even as we live through the most difficult crisis the world has ever seen. _ Before I jump into this episode, I wanted to take a second to thank my sponsors at Bean Bundle, Canada's newest coffee subscription. Before I geared up for this interview I used my french press using beans they sent me from one of the dopest roasters from across the country. Bean Bundle makes it so easy for people like me who drink tonnes of coffee every single day but love to try beans from different roasters. The process is pretty simple...you just visit beanbundle.com , choose how much coffee you want on a monthly basis, medium or dark roast and they ship you different beans from the latest roasters on a monthly basis. Best part is if you live in Canada they ship to you absolutely free and if you sign up using the code BUNDLE10 you'll save 10% your subscription. Now pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy this week's episode.
Hey guys! Awesome episode for you today. If you're an Auto Mechanic this is really insightful for you. We break down Three (3) Areas To Help You Boost Your Business. But also keep listening, if you are also not an Auto Mechanic because these tactics you can use to implement and grow your business as well. We're going to talk about things that I don't think that you would think about for marketing. We get to have some different ways or different strategies to reach people.Hope you enjoy! Here are some key points to this episode: Offer small services that make a big impact.a. Comfy chairs while they waitb. Take them out to show them what is wrong with the vehicle and don't just say what is wrong without showing them.c. Offer free rides back to their destination. If possible, pick-ups too.d. Coffee, a lot of people like coffee. But not that Folgers stuff you made 5 hours before they go there.e. WIFI, ‘nough said. There should be a push for women - Historically women have been taken advantage of at the auto repair shops. Go above the call of duty to make them happy and feel like they know what is going on. Those women are going to talk and spread your name (good or bad) way more than any guy will.Reviews and referrals - Reviews are the lifeblood of your business and especially in auto repair. We all know someone or experienced it first hand where you went in for an oil change and somehow got a new alternator, starter, and a tire rotation…. The car is 6 months old. Bonus - Reminder system. Something similar to FIXD.______________________________________________What do you think about this episode? We'd love to hear from you! Share us your suggestions, comments or questions. At 7 ft 4, everyone thought Mark Eaton should be playing basketball, everyone that is except Mark Eaton. Resigning himself to becoming an auto mechanic, Mark thought that his future lay under cars and not on courts. Thanks to a resilient coach, Mark learned a series of lessons that eventually led him to NBA stardom. If you have ever been benched, fired, or given-up on something, this episode will have you digging in and committing to change.
The Auto Mechanic Shortage is growing
Welcome to show 233. This week we try not to swear (I wonder how successful that was?) As for games, Duke played Auto Mechanic simulator, Awesomenauts and CS:GO, Chinny played The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and Halo Wars and Stu played The Fall, Dragon's Crown and Surge Deluxe. In Chinny's news this week, he covers off the games announced for EGX so far, Crytek not doing so well and asks the question everybody wants to know, is Kinect pushing up the daisies? We round out with emails, Facebook and Speakpipes. Enjoy.
