Skilled talent is in high demand - in every industry. Caliber Collision is facing the shortage in the automotive collision repair industry, where they estimate 30% of the market needs are being unmet due to a lack of technicians.Eddie Hightower leads Caliber's sustainability & social responsibility efforts, which includes the company's Technician Apprentice Program, designed to address the shortage of trained technicians in the industry. We sat down with Eddie to learn just what makes this program so successful that its enrollment has taken off in the few short years since its launch. Discover the keys to a successful workforce training program - including mentorship, company culture, and working alongside education.Plus, hear the newest advancements in the automotive industry that will impact the skills our nation's technicians will need in the coming years.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Initiatives like Caliber's Technician Apprentice Program lift the entire industry up: "What if I invest in training my people, and then they go work somewhere else?" We hear this all the time from companies who don't offer employee training. Caliber does just the opposite. They're not afraid to invest an entire year training individuals to become automotive technicians - even if that person leaves - because they understand the value of lifting up the entire industry. And what they find is that the positive impact the training program leaves on those individuals is more than enough to keep them working at Caliber after they complete the program.Automotive Technician is truly a STEAM career: Eddie calls them "the artisans of Caliber." There's an art to automotive collision repair that requires creativity, on top of the technical skills you'd normally think of. Companies like caliber need the artistic students just as much as the technical ones, which is why STEAM programs can be a great pathway for students to find a creative outlet and a career. The evolution of automotive technology will require technicians to continue training throughout their careers: College automotive programs and apprenticeship programs like Caliber's can do a great job launching the career of an individual, but the learning can't stop there. Eddie shares some of the ongoing developments in the automotive industry - like sensors, batteries and EV technology - that will require technicians to gain new skills throughout the course of their career.Resources mentioned in this episode:Learn more about the Caliber Technician Apprentice Program.Connect with Caliber online:LinkedIn  |  Instagram  |  Facebook  |  YouTube  |  XEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/hightower/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

In this episode of the Jaded Mechanic podcast, host Jeff is joined by his friend Tanner Brandt to discuss the challenges of being a mobile diagnostic and programming technician in the automotive repair industry. They talk about the difficulties of diagnosing input problems and the lack of continued certification for doctors and nurses, as well as the lack of stringent requirements for training instructors in ATMC-accredited schools. They also share their perspectives on the industry and invite listeners to join the conversation. In this episode, the Jeff Compton and Tanner Brandt delve into the crucial topic of prioritizing mental health in the automotive industry. They shed light on the high levels of stress and burnout that are prevalent in the industry, particularly among those in diagnostic roles. The guests argue that it is imperative to teach young people how to manage stress and prevent burnout, especially with the increasing demands of technology and automation in the industry. They suggest that changes need to be made to the way shops are run, vacation time is taken, and the overall atmosphere in the workplace to support mental health. They also emphasize the need to pay attention to the mental health of experienced mechanics who may have been working in the industry for many years and may be experiencing burnout as a result. Overall, the guests stress the importance of creating a supportive and sustainable work environment in the automotive industry that prioritizes mental health and well-being.Jeff and Tanner discuss how small changes in the workplace can help alleviate stress and improve productivity. For instance, one technician was stressed out by waiters coming in the morning, which affected his work. Another technician noticed this and decided to come in 20 minutes later to help alleviate the stress. This small change helped the technician and improved productivity. The speakers also highlight the importance of taking breaks and finding stress relief activities. They talk about how fishing helped one of them improve their mental health. The speakers also discuss how teaching young people in the industry how to manage stress and find stress relief activities is important, especially with new technology coming that could increase burnout. The speakers also discuss how workload and stress can lead to high turnover rates in shops and how small changes, such as adjusting schedules or spreading out tasks, can help alleviate stress and improve productivity. Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing stress in the workplace and making small changes to improve productivity and well-being.The episode also touches on the mental toll that certain types of work, specifically complex automobile repairs, can have on individuals. Tanner mentions that working six days a week, 10 hours a day may work for a short amount of time, but after 20 years, the person's mental health will likely be terrible. The speaker also talks about how certain cars can keep you up at night and drive you crazy, and how this type of work takes a different toll on a person than just stressing about making hours. The guest suggests that the industry needs to start teaching young people how to unplug and manage stress, or else burnout will become even worse. The mental toll of this type of work is also discussed in the context of differences in working conditions between different regions, such as the difficulty of repairing cars in areas with harsh weather conditions. Overall, the episode highlights the importance of taking the mental toll of certain types of work into account and making changes to address and prevent mental exhaustion.[00:01:36] Diagnostic challenges in automotive repair. [00:04:46] Mobile auto repair business. [00:07:43] Tough work in the north. [00:11:13] Undercoating and mental health. [00:17:08] Dealership culture and experience. [00:18:17] Poor mentorship and toxic culture. [00:21:38] Flat rate technician competition. [00:25:22] Dealership work and low hours. [00:29:08] Management groups in auto shops. [00:33:05] Dealership vs. Independent Shops. [00:35:34] Car troubleshooting struggles. [00:39:28] Late Waiters and Texts. [00:42:12] Surviving politics in the auto industry. [00:45:35] Work-life balance in auto repair. [00:49:19] Coping with job-related stress. [00:53:38] Red Seal certification. [00:57:01] Red Seal certification for technicians. [01:01:32] Automotive recertification and obstacles. [01:04:40] Learning from Mediocre Classes. [01:09:05] Aging out of the industry. [01:12:42] Lack of Code Book in Industry. [01:16:34] Automotive training and education. [01:19:48] Youth apprenticeship programs. [01:24:11] Standardization in the industry. [01:27:26] Specialization in Automotive Repair. [01:30:38] Automotive Specialization. [01:34:08] Nightmare Used Cars. [01:37:33] Diagnostics and customer advocacy. [01:43:09] Shops nearing retirement and acquisition. [01:44:35] Shop matchmaking. [01:49:03] Driving through the mountains.

We discuss this idea and much more with Scott Shotton, the owner of The Driveability Guys. In addition to performing mobile diagnostics and programming for local repair shops in the DeKalb Illinois area, Scott also helps the Illinois EPA's vehicle emissions testing program and conducts automotive training all over the country. Get registered for Vision 2022 before the good classes fill up!Click here to register: https://bit.ly/VisionKC2022Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/AutoShopOwnersGroup)

Lara Gibson is an Automotive Technician based in Melbourne, who applies her wizardry knowledge and skill to get hundreds of cars back on the road each year. It's always cool to dig in deeper to jobs that many of us take for granted. Having vehicles, many of us rely on people like Lara to ensure they stay on the road. Not always the easiest of jobs to have and there's a lot of pressure, especially when you're working in a high volume, fast-paced major city workshop like Lara does. Vehicles these days are complex products that are comprised of a multitude of computers (in simple terms). Long gone are the days of lifting the hood and seeing the problem visually or quickly. It's common place to now rely on a diagnostic fault finding tool to locate and identify potential issues, that assist the Technician in guiding them toward the component that requires attention. Lara and I talk about how she fell into the automotive world as an apprentice and gradually built up experience working in the smaller town of Wodonga before moving to Melbourne to continue to develop her skills and expertise. We cover the differences between the terms Mechanic and Technician and also discuss what happens on a day to day basis in a workshop. A place where many of us don't get to see beyond the point of where we drop off our car. Lara is one of the higher qualified Automotive Technicians in the country and being a woman certainly encourages more to follow in her footsteps and have more representation in the industry. Hopefully Lara's story provides some inspiration for others looking to make their own mark in a workshop. Enjoy! Show notes Follow Lara via Facebook | Instagram |

Have you ever wondered what your auto-mechanic does in their spare time? You probably wouldn't think they're at home creating cute, cuddly plush toys for kids. That's exactly what my guest,Nikki who runs the Etsy shop  enjoys doing when she's not turning the wrenches in the garage.   Nikki is a one-of-a-few kind of gal – not only is she an Automotive Technician by day, but by night she's a “plushy artist.” She's been a crafter for most of her life, starting as a young girl hand-sewing pencil-toppers for her and her friends' pencils in school. She took her love of sewing one step further as she got older and decided to invest in a sewing machine.  She taught herself how to use the sewing machine and hasn't looked back since! While she's no longer creating cute shirts for the tops of her pencils, her skill has evolved to creating plush toys for children of all ages.   Where does she get her inspiration? From the kids, themselves!  I love how creative children are ~ Nikki Nikki opened her Etsy shop about a year and a half ago. Currently selling handmade plush toys, she says a lot of the orders she fills comes from parents of children with big ideas for characters. Parents often send her drawings and sketches of animals that their children have created and she brings them to life through her sewing skills.  On this week's episode, Nikki shares her story about how she discovered Etsy, why she decided to “jump in head first” despite people telling her that the site was overcrowded, and what her long-term business goals are for .  We also talk about her pricing model, buying materials at wholesale cost, and how she promotes her shop on Facebook and Instagram. We also get her perspective on posting promotional advertisements in the Etsy forums and why she advises against it.  Stitch and Stuffed – Topics Discussed  How she manages her time running her shop while working full-time.  Her ideas for launching DIY kits for kids.  The technical similarities she sees between her full-time job and her Etsy business.  Attending wholesale vendor shows to connect with wholesalers.  How her marketing and promotional tactics have evolved over the last year.  How she uses Instagram and hashtags to promote her business.  Learning the hard way – fulfilling international orders and accurately gauging shipping fees.  What she looks forward to by attending the in April.  Stitch and Stuffed – Resources Mentioned        Stitch and Stuffed – Etsy Shop Shout Outs  –  run by Nikki's friend Amber where she sells beautifully created jewelry, keychains, and hand-stamped items!  Best Ways to Reach Nikki  Etsy Shop:   Social Media: |   Please take a minute to subscribe and leave an honest review of the podcast in and .
