When Jessica Mitford (aka Decca) was eleven, in 1928, she opened a Running Away Account at Drummonds Bank. A few years later she ran away to Spain to help in the fight against Franco, and not long after that moved to the US where she became a naturalised citizen and joined the Communist Party. The Mitford sisters wrote many books and even more have been written about them, but Carla Kaplan's scholarly new biography of Jessica is a welcome addition to the ‘Mitford industry', according to Rosemary Hill, because she approaches her subject as an ‘American communist with an unusual background in the English aristocracy'. In this episode, Rosemary joins Thomas Jones to talk about Decca's eventful life, her work as a civil rights activist and writer, and her complicated relationships with the other Mitfords. When asked whether the bond with her sisters had ‘stood between her and life's cruel circumstances', Decca replied: ‘Sisters were life's cruel circumstances.' Mike Tomlin stepping down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a seismic moment in the AFC North, and it's a development that directly benefits the Cincinnati Bengals. After nearly two decades of unmatched stability, leadership, and competitiveness in Pittsburgh, the Steelers now enter an era of uncertainty—while the Bengals remain firmly in their championship window. For years, Tomlin was the constant obstacle standing in Cincinnati's way. Even during seasons when the Steelers lacked elite quarterback play or top-tier talent, Tomlin's teams were disciplined, physical, and extremely difficult to put away. Tomlin was the face of Steelers football and a symbol of confidence within the division. His departure changes the balance of power and gives Cincinnati a chance to assert itself as the AFC North's most stable and authoritative franchise. Free agents, draft strategy, and player development in Pittsburgh may all be impacted during this transition, creating further opportunity for Cincinnati to pull ahead. In a division defined by toughness and margins, losing a coach like Mike Tomlin is more than symbolic—it's a competitive opening. And for the Bengals, it couldn't come at a better time.
