Jay Baruchel never intended to be a comedian. But there was a brief moment there in the mid-2000s when he made what he now describes as the “stupid” decision to try and become a movie star. In this episode, the Canadian actor talks about taking on his most dramatic role yet in the new film ‘BlackBerry' about the rise and fall of the Canadian predecessor to the iPhone. Baruchel also traces the story of how Judd Apatow plucked him from obscurity to star in the short-lived Fox sitcom ‘Undeclared,' setting off a string of roles in comedy hits like ‘Knocked Up,' ‘Tropic Thunder' and ‘This Is the End,' a movie he was convinced would be a total disaster—not just because of his very real beef with co-star Jonah Hill, both on screen and off—and ended up wildly exceeding his expectations. Jews are no strangers to the apocalypse. Having survived centuries of persecution and the biggest genocide in human history, generational trauma and fears of fatality come pretty naturally to us. Jay Baruchel is no exception. He's transformed those anxieties into a brand-new TV show, debuting Apr. 30 on Crave, called We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel), in which he explores the myriad ways in which humanity can end, from nuclear disasters to alien invasions. For Yom ha-Shoah, Baruchel joins the program to chat about how his Jewish heritage helped inspire the show and take a stab at the ultimate post-apocalyptic question: what happens to us after we die? Plus, David lays out the latest development in the truly never-ending Israeli/Palestinian wine saga, Avi plays highlights from the JNF's recent Tech Shuk in Montreal, and Rabbi Joshua Corber discusses modern takeaways from Yom ha-Shoah. Doug attends a minor league hockey game with his best friend Pat (Jay Baruchel). Pat taunts the visiting team during a fight and one of their players climbs into the stands, calling him a homosexual slur. Doug (whose brother is gay) steps in and easily beats up the opposing player, as Pat films him, and the video goes is played on Pats hockey show, prompting the coach to call in and tell Doug to come try out as an enforcer. -I like how it starts, with the fight;-I cant see Sean William Scott and not see Stiffler-Jays hair is rediculous, with the cuts...and one is crooked-That was a brutal fight-Are those the guys from the Trailer Park Boys in the studio?-Good for Doug getting his 'thing'-Jay has a terrible Boston accent Meanwhile, veteran enforcer and Doug's idol Ross "The Boss" Rhea (Liev Schreiber) is demoted to the minors after serving a 20-game suspension for slashing an opponent in the head from behind. Three years prior, Rhea hit and concussed the highly-skilled prospect Xavier Laflamme (Marc-André Grondin), who has had trouble recovering from the incident due to the fear of being hit, resulting in his being stuck in the minors. After earning the nickname "The Thug," Doug was hired by a farm team in Canada where Laflamme plays, the Halifax Highlanders, to protect Laflamme and be his roommate. The Highlanders experience success with Doug as their enforcer, and he quickly becomes popular among fans and teammates, much to the chagrin of his parents and Laflamme, who loses ice time and the alternate-captaincy to Doug.Doug also becomes romantically involved with Eva (Alison Pill), a hockey fan with a penchant for players. -So he went from not playing hockey, to an amateur team, to a pro team in, like, 2-3 games?-Def weird to sign someones dick. The Eva arch is interesting... Not sure what scared her off.-She walked in talking to her bf, and only pulled back after they kissed? With four games left on their schedule, the Highlanders need two wins to secure a playoff spot. On a road game in Quebec after an opposing player concusses Laflamme with a heavy hit, Doug savagely beats the player unconscious and is suspended for the next game against Rhea and the St. John's Shamrocks. Doug encounters Rhea at a diner, where Rhea dismisses Doug's claim that he is a hockey player, calling him a goon. Though Rhea acknowledges Doug's physical prowess and gives Doug his respect, Rhea warns him that if they ever meet on the ice, he will "lay [him] the fuck out." The Highlanders (with Doug suspended and Laflamme hospitalized) lose to the Shamrocks. Doug reaches out to Laflamme, and promises him he will always have his back on the ice. In their next game, the Highlanders lead 1–0 thanks to strong teamwork between Doug and Laflamme. -Glad his family showed up, they're supportive-Doug in the bedroom was intense-Did Doug let the guy check LeFlamme? and fake going after him afterwards?-Eva calling herself a slut and admitting to sleeping around was an odd turn-Interesting meeting between Doug and Rhea-Stomach light?-I don't understand the turn around with LeFlamme In the final seconds, Doug blocks a slapshot with his face and his ankle is injured in the ensuing scramble. The Highlanders win, but they need a win against Rhea and the Shamrocks in their last game for a playoff spot. After two periods, the Shamrocks are beating the Highlanders 2–0. Rhea and Doug drop the gloves in the third period. Doug is knocked down first, but Rhea calls off the linesmen and allows him to get back up. Doug manages to break Rhea's nose, but breaks his previously injured ankle in the process. Doug manages to stand back up and knocks out Rhea with a vicious left hook. Eva and his teammates help a seriously injured Doug off the ice and Laflamme, inspired by Doug's efforts and Rhea's defeat, scores a natural hat trick, giving the Highlanders a 3–2 lead.As the game enters its final minute, the final scene has Eva comforting Doug in the locker room as he comments, "I think I nailed him." -Damn the puck to the face... but a good stop.-Do Doug and Rhea will meet in the playoffs, and LaFlamme doesn't walk on the logo-The music during the last game was weird... very tense and ominous. Not what you'd expect.-Whats with the weak ankles? Never mentioned before the fight.-That fight was pretty epic and brutal, worth the wait.-Like how Rhea smiled when he was getting up-Good, happy ending. The end Top Five Trivia of the movie: TOP 5 FACTSSeann William Scott gained weight for the role of Doug Glatt, as well as taking intensive skating lessons and fighting on ice.A great majority of the cast is comprised by Canadian actors, including the well-established actors in Hollywood like Jay Baruchel, Kim Coates, Alison Pill and Eugene Levy. The only non-Canadians in major roles are Minnesota-native Seann William Scott and New Yorker Liev Schreiber. Ironically, Baruchel plays an American character (a thickly-accented Massachusetts native) in the film, while Schreiber plays a Canadian character. The scene where Rhea sheds crocodile tears during a press conference was a reference to NHL player Todd Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi, playing for the Vancouver Canucks at the time, punched Colorado Avalanche's Steve Moore in the back of the head during a game causing an injury that would end Moore's career. In a press conference afterwards, an emotional Bertuzzi tearfully apologized for the incident, which cost him a $500,000 salary deduction and a 17 month suspension.Seann William Scott gained weight for the role of Doug Glatt, as well as taking intensive skating lessons and fighting on ice.In an interview with hockey blog Puck Daddy, Liev Schreiber notes that he was inspired by former hockey enforcer Bob Probert. As an homage to the player, he taped his wrists for the film, just as Probert had done when he played. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. When I heard who the ten comedians were for LOL: Last One Laughing Canada, my first thought was just give the trophy to Colin Mochrie now.Coming to Amazon Prime Video Feb. 18, the six-episode series follows similar LOL reality competitions featuring the best comics from Australia, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Spain and other countries. It features previous brioux.tv podcast guest Jay Baruchel as host and two other past guests among the competitors – Andrew Pfung and K Trevor Wilson. The others are Caroline Rhea (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), Debra DiGiovanni (Humour Resources), Dave Foley (The Kids in the Hall), Jon Lajoie (The League), Tom Green (The Tom Green Show), Mae Martin (Feel Good), and Brandon Ash Mohammed (This Hour Has 22 Minutes). That's a strong field, but Mochrie would still seem to have the edge. All those seasons keeping a straight face next to Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, Brad Sherwood and others on Whose Line is it Anyway should have him battle ready and steeled for success. Being married to a very funny lady, Deb McGrath, has also honed his skills working without a script. And, aye, being born in Scotland dona hurt either.Mochrie has also watched all of the other LOL's including the Australian one hosted by Rebel Wilson. We assess the competition, and both agree that Baruchel would be terrible at this game because he's an easy laugh. “He'd win if the game was who can swear the most,” says Mochrie.

Gerry Dee says he is thrilled to be back in front of a studio audience again as Family Feud Canada returns for a third season. The game show, shot at CBC's Toronto broadcast centre, had to turn studio audiences away last season as COVID safety protocols limited capacity to participants and crew. Dee, a seasoned stand-up comedy performer, suddenly had to aim his ad libs at camera and crew members only and, as he points out, “they're trained not to laugh.”This season a limited number of on-lookers are allowed back in for each of the 102 new episodes airing Monday to Thursdays on CBC.Dee also talks about a series he did work on in Montreal during COVID times: The Moodys. The Fox sitcom starred Denis Leary and Jay Baruchel. Dee, a loyal defender of his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs, says he talked hockey all day long between Leary, a big Bruins supporter, and Baruchel, who bleeds the Blue, Blanc Rouge of les Canadiens. On the podcast, Dee also talks about his hopes for the Leafs this season, efforts to get back on the road with a series of comedy concerts and why he feels his teacher sitcom Mr.d, which ran for eight seasons on CBC, had too short a title.

BriouxTV: The Podcast

I first met Jay Baruchel 20 years ago in Los Angeles on a Television Critics Association  Fox network reception in downtown Los Angeles, At 18, he was starring in Judd Apatow's college comedy Undeclared alongside another young Canadian, Seth Rogen. The two were pretty excited to have landed on a promising show; what they  could not have known at the time was that they'd each won the comedy career lottery.Baruchel was born in Ottawa and raised in Montreal. He grew up soaking up every bit of movie intel from the likes of Leonard Maltin and Siskel & Ebert; within a few years he would be reviewed by all three. He talks about his steps along the way -- his early Canadian work on Popular Mechanics for Kids (PMK) and Are You Afraid of the Dark; being directed by Cameron Crowe in "Almost Famous" and Clint Eastwood in "Million Dollar Baby"; being reunited with Rogen on "Knocked Up" and "This is The End."Also touched on is his his work on the FX series Man Seeking Woman, a shot-in-Toronto wonder, and his determination to act in, direct, write and produce projects in his home and native land. One current effort is The Moodys, which premieres Thursday, April 1 on Fox. The Montreal-based production stars Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins and Francois Arnaud, with Gerry Dee recurring. Because Leary is in it, the series has several scenes shot in a hockey rink. Baruchel, a lifelong fan of les Canadiens, says even he is less of an NHL nerd than Leary. You'll hear more on other Baruchel touchstones, such as his own hockey movies Goons 1 & 2, where  he also contributed as a writer and a director. I even try to pry a story out of him about his "How to Train Your Dragon" voice-mate Craig Ferguson. That's Jay Baruchel, who'se gone from Almost Famous to a clutch player in TV and film.

Bare your knuckles and sock us in the face because the 12th episode of Scoring At The Movies intends to body-check your audio canals. We’re back on the rink with our 2nd hockey movie. We spent a lot of time jawing about the merits of fighting in hockey (or the lack of merit) and about the game as a whole. What can you do? We’re Canadian. The thrust of the talk though, of course, is about Seann William Scott’s Doug Glatt, the guy who just wants a purpose and just wants to belong. He’s the super-sweet, non-psychotic Travis Bickle. Onward!

On episode 310 of The Harold & Maudecast, "Sequels", hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Goon: Last of the Enforcers. All too often sequels don't quite live up to their originals, with some notable exceptions (Godfather 2, Superman 2....) we examine the art of the sequel and review two new film sequels whose originals were unexpected sleeper hits. After the Kingsman's HQ is destroyed by drug dealer, Poppy (Julianne Moore), Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) must team up with their American counterparts, The Statesman to take Poppy down before she destroys the world. The Statesman, whose front is a Bourbon distillery in Kentucky, are headed up by Champagne (Jeff Bridges) along with Tequila (Channing Tatum), Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) and Ginger Ale (Halle Berry).  Kingsman: The Golden Circle is  Drected/Co-Written by Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman the Secret Service, X-Men: First Class)  and Co-Written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), Kingsman the Secret Service) . The film was theatrically released on September 22, 2017. Sidelined after one too many hits and now married  to Eva (Alison Pill) with a baby on the way, Doug "The Thug" Glatt (Seann William Scott) hangs up his skates and tries to live a 9 to 5 life. But when Doug's nemesis, Anders Cain (Wyatt Russell), is made captain of the Highlanders and new ownership threatens to tear his team apart, Doug's old nemesis Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber) helps him get back on the ice.  Goon: Last of the Enforcers is Directed by Jay Baruchel and Co-Written by Baruchel and Jesse Chabot.  The film had a limited theatrical release on September 1, 2017 and is available on Streaming services. For more movie, tv, game reviews and other podcasts, articles and news visit www.thehmcnetwork.com

Week 36 of Barstool Radio was as star-studded as any week we've had so far. Monday we came out firing with Jay Baruchel and Colton Orr, who dropped by to promote their new movie Goon: The Last of the Enforcers, and to ragdoll Smitty. On Tuesday Pres and KFC put CNBC in their place for doubting our ability to keep the Pardon My Take boys on the pirate ship, and put Smitty in a bodybag for stealing Kevin's shoes. Wednesday belonged to Chris Jericho and the From the Top Rope Boys. Jericho gave us some life tips so that maybe one day, we too, can be as handsome, smart, and talented as he is. On Thursday we brought in the hottest new band in the music scene, Pup Punk to debut their new song 'Back to Skewl' (Tonight), and Pat McAfee also came on to promote his new upcoming podcast, Laces Out. Unfortunately on Friday, a lot of people weren't in the office, so they missed Owen Wilson and Sir Michael Caine who were in the office to promote their movie about flying airplanes through Russian tornadoes. Baruchel, Orr, Jericho, Wilson, Caine, Portnoy, and you. This is Barstool Radio.

Merry Cagemas, dear listeners, and welcome to Cage Match 2: The Cagening! Yes, it's another four-way battle of Nicolas Cage characters to celebrate this undeniably remarkable, yet thoroughly insane, holiday season. Four Cages! One cage! At stake: the prestigious, recently-reclaimed-from-the-IRS championship belt proclaiming its wearer the undisputed World Heavyweight Cage! Only this time, the Cage Match will be contested not by mere mortals, but by Cages who are all something more -- or something less -- than human. Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, leaves tracks of hellfire down the entrance ramp as he rides toward the ring. Balthazar Blake, famed sorcerer and trainer of sorcerer's apprentices, arrives in a flash of magic and intimacy issues. John Milton drives angry into the arena despite his ever-present sunglasses, and fully intends to drive angry out of it again with a victory. And Peter Loew, freshly empowered by the vampire's kiss -- at least in his own mind, which he's actually just out of -- dons his plastic gift shop fangs and his bizarre demeanor in preparation for battle. Which Cage will prove that they are the most Cage by escaping the cage before any other Cage? Will Dan successfully use Miles' own massive ego and love of seeing his name in print against him? (Editor's note: http://www.thesportster.com/wrestling/the-8-best-and-7-worst-entrance-outfits-in-wrestling-histroy/)Can MeganBob prove that successfully training Jay Baruchel is the greatest achievement in the wizarding world? Is Kit actually here, or has her consciousness been entirely subsumed in an attempt at creating an argument for Peter Loew? The answers to all these questions and more, tonight on Cagemas 2: The Cagening!

Welcome to the House of Crouse. “How to Train Your Dragon” star Jay Baruchel stops by the HoC to chat up his new documentary “Celtic Soul.” The film features Baruchel and sports broadcaster Eoin O’Callaghan, who met via twitter and a shared love of Glasgow Celtic. After two years of chatting 140 characters at a time the pair became friends when O’Callaghan came to Montreal to visit the actor. That turned into the first leg of a journey that would take them from Quebec’s Bell Centre, home ice of the Canadiens, to Dublin’s Croke Park, one of Europe’s largest sports stadiums where they try hurling, a forerunner to hockey. They travel two continents and three countries to make it to see a match in paradise a.k.a. Celtic Park and Jay and Eoin tell the whole story on the show this week. It's a great story. C'mon in, sit a spell and enjoy.
