So, as they started to ramp up, we sat down with Nathan Munt, co-founder and head brewer at King River Brewing, and a man who loves celebrating classic German and Belgian beer styles all year round. He launched the brewery with his wife Brianna in the heart of the idyllic King Valley in the Victorian High Country back in 2016, with a lineup featuring an Altbier, Kolsch, and a style that had first made him fall in love with beer: a Belgian tripel called Waiting For Godot, for reasons explained in this episode of The Crafty Pint Podcast. Beers such as Oerbier, Arabier, and Stille Nacht may not be as familiar to today's avid beer consumer, but for decades these unusual strong ales have been staples on the menus and cellars of more adventurous beer bars around the world. De Dolle Brouwers (https://www.oerbier.be) got its start in 1980, among the vanguard in a new wave of Belgian brewers who rejected the consolidation and cynical corner-cutting that had come to define the industry there. Cofounder Kris Herteleer was committed to a more natural approach to brewing, using real malt, whole hops, healthy yeast, spring water, and the highly manual mechanical tools of the decades-old brewhouse they purchased in the village of Esen, just outside of Diksmuide, in West Flanders. Oerbier was, and still is, hard to classify. It limns the space between an overtly acid-forward oud bruin and a strong Belgian dark ale, borrowing from both where and when it needs to. Yet this ambiguity fits Herteleer's approach; De Dolle isn't concerned at all about adherence to styles. Herteleer would much rather get you asking questions than provide you with easy answers. In this episode, recorded at the brewery as we sipped beers from their cellar more than 20 years old, Herteleer discusses: switching from Rodenbach yeast in 2000, and the five-year process of getting Oerbier back to its intended expression the prevalence of coloring and backsweeting in 1970s and '80s Belgian ale balancing acidity and sweetness in higher-gravity beer using a coolship, Baudelot cooler, open fermentors, a Lactobacillus reactor, and French wine barrels to produce complex, flavorful beer that's more than just “sour” using relatively high IBUs to limit Lactobacillus and Pediococcus activity in mixed-culture fermentation avoiding the crutch of spices in Belgian ale barrel-aging in wine barrels rather than spirits barrels, to avoid “dead” barrels And more. Welcome to Antwerp, Belgium! Antwerp is one of the oldest cities in Belgium and is in the Flanders region. It is known for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. This vibrant city is located on the banks of the Scheldt River and is home to some of the most incredible sights in all of Europe.I (Natalie) visited in the Fall of 2021 with my family. I have a great uncle who lives there, and my parents, my sister, my niece, and I visited him and this beautiful city. We started the day by taking the train from Brussels to Antwerp to meet my great-uncle at a cafe for some delicious coffee and treats. The station in Antwerp is one of the most unique and beautiful in the country! My great-uncle took us all around! We walked around the main square, but we stayed pretty much in the same area, aside from when we went to walk along the river for a little bit. The weather was frigid that day! We stayed for a short time, but it was fun to see such a historic city, meet my great-uncle, and spend time with him. It was fun to see how similar he was to my grandma, and he and my dad enjoyed speaking in Dutch with each other, although his English is excellent! That's the case for most of the Dutch and Flemish people. Antwerp is one of the oldest cities in Belgium and is known for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine! Lots of good Flemish dishes to be had. Including Flemish stew! We ate lunch at a restaurant near the Cathedral of Our Lady, which we spent a while touring. The cathedral was built in 1352! The cultural scene in Antwerp is vibrant and alive. The city is home to numerous festivals and events throughout the year that celebrate the art and culture of the city. Visitors can explore the city's many art galleries, music venues, and theaters. Antwerp is also home to some of the best restaurants in Belgium. Whether you're looking for traditional Belgian dishes or something more exotic, Antwerp has something for everyone.Antwerp is also a great place to shop. The city is home to numerous high-end boutiques, designer stores, and unique shops. Shopping in Antwerp is a great way to get a feel for the city and experience the local culture.Fun WW2 fact: Antwerp is a deep-water inland port close to Germany. It is connected to the North Sea via the river Scheldt, allowing ocean-going ships to be passed. Halfway Crooks (https://halfwaycrooks.beer) cofounders Joran Ginderachter and Shawn Bainbridge may love the wide world of craft beer, but with their Atlanta, Georgia brewery the goal was to create a space and beers that would let drinkers find a beer they like, and drink the same beer all night. If you arrive with the goal of maximizing check-ins to the widest number of beers, you'll quickly find you're in the wrong place. The same design principles inform the space and the beer itself—equal parts recontextualized nostalgia, funky creativity, wry humor, and dry deadpan delivery. The bathrooms feature illustrations of chickens from the late 1800's, floral patterned wallpaper, and a separate soundtrack from the main taproom (Bladerunner and Twin Peaks soundtracks). A video screen at the door plays low-fi digital animations. They embrace our digital present with a bit of warm vacuum tube analog glow. And the same can be said of the beers—they're fresh and current, but with tweaks of nostalgia and fuzz. The brewery may be best known for their lagers, which center around separate hop varieties. “You go to a taproom sometimes and see seven different IPAs,” said Bainbridge. “You come to this taproom and you see seven German pilsners.” They source hops from some of the most sought-after farms in Germany, and build beers around them, yet there's also an American mentality—boosting aroma through later additions and whirlpooling, using modern enzymes to ensure fermentation proceeds on schedule. They use a brewhouse not optimized for lagers, but have figured out how to get the most from it. There's no decoction and just single infusion mashes, but the beers are tight and structured. Jimmy sits down uncomfortably before he welcomes Em Sauter, the author of ‘Hooray for Craft Beer!,' and James Tai, a ‘random guy sitting at the bar' who is helping local bars and restaurants improve their service. The episode kicks off with Em's and James's background in the beer world and their experience with the Cicerone Certification program. Em also shares her cartooning background with an MFA from the Center for Cartoon Studies, along with her first beer job selling cigarettes and Budweisers to cement factory workers while dusting the Belgian beers that no one ever bought. When Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos started homebrewing together in the 80's, Belgian beer was in the midst of a sea change. Consolidation was afoot as larger industrial breweries swallowed up smaller concerns, while an earlier generation of brewers had reached retirement age with few of the younger generation interested in carrying on the brewing tradition. The beers that they loved and grew up drinking were disappearing—subsumed by a wave of sweeter mass-produced crowd-pleasing beers. To be fair, there were (and continue to be) some historical holdouts. But generally speaking, bitterness was slowly leaving the lexicon of Belgian brewing. Bacelle, who grew up around beer (his father was a guezesteker, or blender, but did not brew), longed for the beers he had tasted growing up. Together with homebrewing partner Devos, he decided to launch a beer brand, De Ranke (https://www.deranke.be), to address the opportunity they saw in the market for beer that embraced bitterness. First was their Guldenberg Tripel, followed closely by what is now considered a paragon of hop-forward beer, the aptly named XX Bitter. Today, these beers feel familiar, but they were groundbreaking in their time and remain somewhat unique today due to the peculiarities of De Ranke's process.
