My guests today for this continued celebration of 100 episodes of the Wonder Dome are Dr. Jeff Hull and Ben Preston. Jeff was on episode #55 of the Dome, "Meta Leadership," and Ben was on Episode #81, "The Space Where Worlds Meet."In this return conversation, we explore one of the key constraints of our dominant capitalist culture: we often only know each other through the roles that we play in society. For example, the role of "consumer," the role of "provider," the role of "maker," of "inventor," of “employee", of "entrepreneur."As a result, we don't actually know each other. We start to think that we are our roles. This can lead us to confuse socially "normal" behaviors - even highly destructive behaviors towards each other and the biosphere - as simply a fact of reality. That we are inherently greedy. That we are inherently designed for survival of the fittest. That it truly is a game of winner takes all.These beliefs and the behaviors that follow from them are killing us. But they are far from the whole picture. We exist in a much more complex, beautiful, and diverse tapestry of possibility. Ben, Jeff, and I explore a few threads in that tapestry, discussing themes of leadership, culture-making, history, and ancestry. In the end, we center on this question: what might it look like to create alternative cultural spaces - right here and now - where we can have first-hand experiences of what a future culture could be?It's time to totally reimagine who we are, what we're capable of, and what kind of world we want to build. It's time to stand for the highest and greatest good for our species and the whole planet. In this episode we are live at the Harrogate flower show and we are talking to the head gardener Ben Preston.York Gate is a magical one-acre garden created by the Spencer family between 1951 and 1994. Frederick and Sybil Spencer along with their son Robin, laid out and nurtured what is now one of the finest small gardens in the country. The design of ‘rooms' interlinked through a succession of vistas and executed with meticulous attention to detail owed much to the Arts and Crafts movement, complemented by Sybil's skills as a plants woman. In accordance with Sybil's wishes, on her death in 1994, York Gate was given to Perennial. York Gate has been granted Grade II national heritage status in a list of post-war gardens and landscapes for England. “It is an amazing garden, and it should be protected. It's not a stately home, it's a family home. Ben Preston is an Ulsterman from Northern Ireland who currently lives and works across Australia and New Zealand as a regenerative engineer and designer. Regenerative designers think about what is it to make a space that comes to life and invites people in. One that invites people to name their biggest hopes, dreams, and fears, connect around them, and in the process, take care of and support each other. As a facilitator, I'm often thinking about those things purely in the context of how two people might talk or interact with each other. But Ben is thinking about it through the lens of what is it to build a space that allows for that.I was introduced to Ben through another wonderful guest, Jeff Hull. He said Ben is working with deep ideas about what it is to be in community in ways that allow for our highest and best to come through. That's where our conversation starts: locating ourselves in the world, and the places where we and our ancestors came from. I follow Ben on this journey to embracing his longing for connection in a way that allowed him to be true to himself, but also allowed him to begin to walk with and talk across boundaries of identity, ethnicity, and culture.Ben lives at the heart of this beautiful paradox that we can be uniquely anchored in where we come from and who we are in a way that actually allows us to connect with others who are uniquely where they come from and who they are. Special Edition of Accountants on Purpose | Season 5 Launch Episode Ben Preston joins Sarah Bartholomeusz to talk about his unique journey to becoming an accomplished CFO. Following a series of very cold nights working in remote South Australia and a chance meeting a plan was put in place to embark on the journey to become an accountant. The “journey” included working as a mining labourer at Olympic Dam, a spot welder on the production line at Mitsubishi and an Accounts Payable clerk at the Women's and Children's Hospital. Ben Preston is now an accomplished CFO with many years of experience behind him as a CFO and prior to this working in both second tier and big four accounting firms. He is currently the CFO of the very popular family restaurant franchise, Fasta Pasta.

Nothing exists within a vacuum. When we build huge infrastructure, it doesn’t stand alone, but amidst multiple upon multiple, in fact, infinite systems of life. So far in the 21st Century, the discourse about what we build has been largely around sustainability. How do we make buildings, and our infrastructure sustainable so they not only last a long time but so they don’t harm the environment or people? Today we explore a different perspective, the concept of regenerative design. It’s a conversation that goes beyond sustainability, that asks the question: “How might we look at what we create and build for the benefit of human beings more deeply so that all life can thrive in any given area?” For this discussion, we are joined by guests Ben Preston and Lindsey Brown. Ben is an independent consultant and engineer who is deeply committed to inspiring and educating people about regenerative design. Lindsey is GHD’s Water Market Leader for Victoria, Australia who is leading an exploration of how regenerative design can help transform the work of the water sector. Together, Ben and Lindsey explore what regenerative design is and how it could be applied in the water industry.

It's 2020, everything is supposed to be online..and you'll still be surprised how many functions of our society are still on the outside looking in at E-commerce. Construction, an essential business these days, is no exception and Ben Preston and his cofounder Luke Powers saw a huge opportunity to address a major problem for contractors all over. His company, Gearflow, is an online marketplace for constructions equipment and parts. Typically contractors have to go to all different suppliers and sites to what Ben Preston calls "an information blackhole". When they realized that about 80% of the equipment suppliers were independently-owned businesses, the foundation for Gearflow - bringing all these suppliers under one umbrella - was set. Ben joins Scott to talk about the state of construction, injecting E-commerce into a fragmented industry and how the effects can impact real estate.

The world was first introduced to the term “cigar butt” shares in what Warren Buffett regards as the best investment book ever written. Published in 1949, Benjamin Graham’s masterpiece is called The Intelligent Investor. And Buffett reckons it provided the skeleton around which all his other investment knowledge was built. Graham, who changed his surname from Grossbaum in recognition of those anti-Semitic times, likens some shares to a mostly smoked cigar. They are shares in companies whose circumstances have changed significantly for the worse so have been shunned by most investors. But often this neglect can push the unloved orphan’s share price below what is realistic, providing an opportunity for the smart analyst to see value where others don’t. Hence the analogy with a cigar butt that still has a couple of good puffs left. Peabody Energy, the world’s largest private sector coal miner, was one of many coal companies that hit the wall after the mineral’s price plunge. Shareholders in Peabody were wiped out, but thanks to $800m in financing from banks led by Citigroup, the company’s coal mines continued producing running. Last April, a year after opting for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a rehabilitated Peabody re-emerged onto the New York Stock Exchange. While off the market it raised fresh capital at $25 a share. The BBC has published its review of children's services at the corporation, revealing how viewing trends amongst youngsters is changing. It says children want more content online so they can access it from their mobile phones and tables. Steve Hewlett speaks to Helen Bullough, head of in-house production for CBBC about the challenges posed by creating apps and on-demand content for children. Also joining him is Greg Childs, who launched the first internet services for Children's BBC and is now Director of the Children's Media Foundation, and asks him why he thinks the BBC needs to do more to move children's entertainment from TV to online. A new season on Channel 4 starts next week which claims to examine how pornograph is affecting people's lives. One show, Sex Box, will feature couples having sex in a solid, sound-proofed box and then discussing their experience with a panel of experts. We talk to host Mariella Frostrup about why she decided to get involved, and what can be gained from a programme like this. And Ralph Lee, head of factual programmes at the channel, discusses whether programming like this fulfills a public service remit, or is simply a gimmick to attract a dwindling youth audience. The Radio Times celebrates its 90th birthday this week. Launched in a fit of pique in 1923, after an announcement from the Newpaper Proprietors' Association that it would be charging the BBC for publishing radio listings, it's since become one of the best known magazines of its kind. Steve Hewlett talks to its editor Ben Preston about how it's keeping pace by providing online guides, and keeping circulation going by brokering exclusives with big names like Naomi Campbell and Jamie Oliver.
