With Ub Iwerks gone, Bob Clampett was left to take over the cartooning unit, and his own sensibilities started to quickly become apparent, even if they weren't allowed completely free reign with Chuck Jones still there. In this short, we see some Clampett start to stretch his wings with evil cute characters while Jones has fun giving detailed animation to an ancient dog. Is the cartoon any good? Listen to find out!

Chris and Alex take a look at animation's historical and troubling relationship to race with this examination of the Censored Eleven, a collection of controversial Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons produced during the 1930s and 1940s removed from syndication since 1968 for their inclusion of harmful and offensive racist stereotypes. Topics include histories of animating the other, identity, and experience within the medium and legacies of minstrelsy performance; the visibility of Black culture and jazz-based parodies like Bob Clampett's Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs (1943) against more hidden (and no less damaging) iconographies within cartoon representation; and what it means to confront such legacies of racism within the critical study of animation, and if erasing any and all mention of the Censored Eleven pretends that racism in Hollywood did not exist. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

While Warner Bros' output has been increasing in quality in the late 30s, largely thanks to new blood like Tex Avery and newly-impowered blood like Bob Clampett, one member of the old guard in particular is still around and has been a lot slower to change: Fritz Freleng. Much of his output has largely been echoing the stylings of the Harman-Ising era, a style that's more and more at odds with the rest of the studio. But Freleng DOES change, even if slowly, so how does this cartoon of his hold up? Listen to find out!

We present our The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie review! The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is a 2024 American animated science fiction comedy film produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Directed by Pete Browngardt in his feature directorial debut, it is the first fully-animated and theatrically released film in the Looney Tunes franchise based on entirely original material. The film is spun-off from the Looney Tunes Cartoons series developed by Browngardt and features the voices of Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, and Peter MacNicol. The film follows Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they try to save Earth from an alien scheme. In 2019, while working on Looney Tunes Cartoons, Browngardt was asked if he had any ideas for a new Looney Tunes feature film. Browngardt eventually settled on the premise of a "sci-fi B-movie from the '50s," starring Daffy and Porky. He took inspiration from features of the era and shorts starring the cartoon duo. Warner Bros. Animation, alongside several vendors, provided the animation for the film, of which its character designs were modelled after the style of animator Bob Clampett and Tex Avery. Joshua Moshier, who previously worked on Looney Tunes Cartoons, composed the film's score.Upon its announcement in 2021, The Day the Earth Blew Up was originally set to be released on HBO Max and the "ACME Night" block on Cartoon Network. The film however premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 11, 2024 and had a limited release in the United States on December 13, 2024 by Ketchup Entertainment, before expanding wide on March 14, 2025. The film received positive reviews from critics, and has grossed $5.6 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Is this trip really necessary? Or rather, is this podcast a little too of the moment?? Well, half of it, anyway. The animation industry became pitchmen for rationing, selling war bonds and other ways to help our men and women overseas during World War 2, while also taking every pot shot the Hayes Code would allow them to at the fascist powers we were opposed to. Can we bring that energy back? Please? Anyhow, we've got Donald Duck, Popeye, Woody Woodpecker and a batch of oddly familiar gremlins.

These shorts were directed by some of early animation's big hitters including Tex Avery, Chuck Jones and Bob Clampett. As Jenna takes Hugh though the some of the eleven cartoons, they discuss the stereotyping of African American people, cultural appropriation and the cherry-picking of culture, and why and should we be still discussing these shorts. Mars ain't no place to set a movie. In fact, it's cold as hell. This is a lesson Andrew Stanton would learn in 2012 when the release of his dream project, a mega-budget adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' massively influential John Carter novels, was met with spectacular apathy from critics and audiences alike. Released a month before The Avengers, this mocap-heavy sci-fi/fantasy/western was going to kick off the next great Disney franchise, but inexperience, bad timing, and one of the most ill-advised marketing campaigns in recent memory doomed it to the scrap heap. A shame, since it's one of the most charming and lovingly-crafted adventure flicks of the last decade. In this edition of How I Learned To Love The Bombs, we detail how a Pixar director with no live-action experience rescued John Carter from 80 years of Development Hell, the trilogy and more we almost got from a team with three Oscars and a Pulitzer between them, Lynn Collins' turn as the 2010's most unsung action heroine, and how this movie is one Ocean Master away from just being Aquaman. In this week's episode, we scratch the surface about just what makes director Bob Clampett's Warner Bros. cartoons so unique and invigorating, and what gives them the frenetic energy no one has ever matched. Our in-depth dissection is of Baby Bottleneck, one of his last and very best films starring Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, which Clampett himself called a series of "incidents". And just why did he call them that? Listen and find out!

It was a term once used to describe exceptional jazz musicians. African-Americans spelled it “hepcat,” while their white counterparts heard “cat” and assumed “hep” to be a modifier. Hence, “hep cat.” In 1942 Bob Clampett created the first color Looney Tunes cartoon, The Hep Cat, featuring an unnamed feline that would later develop a lisp and become known as Sylvester, (derived from silvestris, the scientific name for the cat species.) Soon, people were being referred to as all kinds of cats, as in cool cat, crazy cat, and “hep” became “hip.” And it all came from the African Wolof word “hipikat,” meaning, “someone finely attuned to his/her environment.” Makes sense, right? An inspired improv from a blower in sync with his fellow jazz musicians would trigger the rejoinder “hipikat” from a bystander familiar with the African word. Anglos heard “hep cat” and a new, misheard word was born. Language is an interesting thing. If you enjoyed that brief summary of “hep cat,” then you're definitely my brand of crazy. I enjoyed it, too. Arooo! Aroo-Arooooo! New subject: Winning a Race Nothing changes when you win a footrace. But the person who wins the hearts of men and women can wonderfully change the future. Do you have the skill to win the eye, the ear, the doubting heart? Can you win the human race? Wizard Academy is a school of the communication arts. The majority of our students come to us to learn how to create ads that will make them money, make presentations that will make them money, or win promotions at work that will make them money. The footrace of business holds a magnetic attraction; it never ceases to draw a crowd, easily winning the mind and wallet. Please don't think I'm disparaging it. But the heart, the heart, remains in the hands of the arts. Journalists and novelists and screenwriters and musicians, painters and poets, playwrights and performers, sculptors and singers, architects and photographers shape our ever-changing mood and guide us toward the future. Artists such as these are attending Wizard Academy in increasing numbers since the methods and principles we teach are just as easily applied to the arts as they are to business. Alumni interested in furthering their knowledge of the heart-arts will be delighted to know that discussions are continuing with acad-grad David Freeman to bring his paradigm-expanding Visual Emotioneering course to Wizard Academy. David is currently the object of an epic tug-of-war, with Hollywood pulling him into movies and Japan pulling him into video games. Both are willing to pay whatever it takes, but David really wants to hang with his homies at the Academy. Stay tuned. Another Acad-grad Writes a Big Book: Bag the Elephant (subtitled, How to Win and Keep BIG Customers.) Steve Kaplan is the nicest guy you'll ever meet, the boy every mom wishes her daughter would bring home for dinner. He could easily have been a regular on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. So did Steve became rich as a salesman because he was nice, or in spite of it? In his new book, Steve tells you exactly how he bagged the elephants, and how you can, too. I strongly suggest you pick up a copy at your local bookstore, or http://wizardacademy.org/welcome.asp (order one at amazon.com,) (discounted there to just $13.57 in hardback.) Grab it now, before the first printing is all sold out and a waiting list is formed. And keep your eye on the bestseller lists.
