Ever caught yourself engaging in "all-or-nothing" thinking or the comparison trap when it comes to food and your body? These are known as cognitive distortions, and they play a pivotal role in shaping our attitudes and behaviors towards what we eat and what we think. Brittney Moses and Ranela Kaligithi, co-hosts of the popular wellness podcast Speaking Our Minds, believe that how we feel about ourselves impacts our daily decisions from our food choices to whether or not we choose to move our bodies to what we see when we look in the mirror. When it comes to mental health, there are a number of perspectives shared by people ranging from biological to spiritual causes of mental health. However, there isn't one size fits all when it comes to mental health due to the diversity of issues individuals may face. Due to the nature of the church, individuals struggling with mental health tend to run to it for support first rather than a mental health professional. Therefore, it is important for the church to get a holistic approach to understanding what factors are raising mental health issues in an individual in order to provide the right resources to them. In this episode, Brittney Moses shares how mental health is deeply rooted in mind, body, and soul. This holistic approach to understanding mental health encompasses major mental health struggles. Quotes When an individual is in psychological distress, they are more likely to turn to their church or their clergy, their ministry leaders before they ever step foot to a mental health professional. People are suffering in silence in the church. The church really is a first line of response to people's journey to healing and recovery, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. You can be Christian and struggle with anxiety and depression. “Can I follow Jesus, but also follow science?” “Can I be a good, supportive friend and validate feelings without letting feelings become facts?” ABSOLUTELY YES to all of the above - and Brittney Moses is here on THRIVE to help us make it happen. As a thought leader, content creator and advocate at the intersection of faith and mental health, Brittney is an ideal resource and incredible voice. In this episode, we talk about why therapy is still so stigmatized in some Christian circles (and how to help fix that). We talk about learning to personally differentiate between what is doable versus actually sustainable in your own life - and living accordingly. We talk about expanding beyond “I'll pray for you!” in an authentic way to provide support via presence, practicality, validation, self-awareness, and resourcefulness. And, we talk about the difference between living “your truth” and THE Truth, and how to validate your (and others') feelings while ultimately seeking and following Truth as guide. Sponsored by Faithful Counseling: http://faithfulcounseling.com/tiffanydawn - Deconstructing your faith can be REALLY hard on your mental health. So today we're talking with Brittney Moses, host of The Faith and Mental Wellness Podcast, about mental health during deconstruction, recognizing spiritual manipulation, healing from church hurt, finding a healthy community, and SO MUCH MORE! Welcome back to Episode 9 of "Outgrowing the Good Christian Girl" podcast!HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS FOR TODAY:Q1: When you were younger, what was your approach to mental health as a Christian? And what was the fruit (good or bad) of that approach? (@3:20)Q2: How does growing up in a fundamental or legalistic faith tradition affect our mental health? (@7:42)Q3: How can we recognize if our approach to spirituality is healthy or unhealthy? (@15:17)Q4: Many of my listeners are deconstructing at least some parts of their faith right now, and I know firsthand that can be extremely stressful and anxiety-provoking. Why is deconstruction so hard on our mental health? Is this a common experience? (@21:52)Q5: What red flags should we look for to see if we're being manipulated or gaslighted? And how do we respond if we think that's happening to us? (@29:12)Q6: What should we do if we're in a toxic church situation? (@34:22)Q7: How do we recognize a healthy church? (@38:54)Q8: How do we heal from church hurts? (@41:42)Q9: I loved your IG reel: "Things I thought were holy that were actually unhealthy." Would you share a few of these with us, and some steps we can take to become healthier in these areas? (@46:53)Q10: There's sadly still such a stigma around mental health in some church circles. So how has your study of the Bible AND psychology led you to view mental health as a Christian? (@53:00)Q11: You've put together some really thoughtful resources for Christians wrestling with mental health. Would you tell us about your resources and where we can find them? The church has long been a source of shame when it comes to mental health, sometimes even using the Bible as a weapon instead of as a source of comfort. But being a Christian does not mean that we never struggle with mental health. God made us body, mind, and spirit, and it is imperative that we adjust the conversation around mental health to support this view. What are we missing? What are we doing right? How can we keep moving forward? As a professional counselor who has worked with thousands of individuals struggling with mental health, this is a topic close to my heart. Brittney Moses is a mental health advocate and research assistant at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Behavior. Brittney and her work have been featured in Relevant, New York Weekly, The Chicago Journal, and The Huffington Post. She joins me for this important and encouraging episode!
This week Karrie interviews mental health advocate, Brittney Moses about how, as Christians, we can integrate the mental health conversation into the Church by engaging all the aspects of our humanity (mind, body and soul) that He created while keeping God and His word as the ultimate truth. In the Church, we typically experience a lot of shame or even abstract talk around mental health and it is Brittney's passion to bring many different practical tools to the Christian experience. — Brittney Moses is a mental health advocate encouraging the integration of faith, culture, and wellness. A mom and a Los Angeles native, Brittney walks the walk, holding to a faith-informed approach to mental health that is deeply steeped in personal experience and compassion for those she serves. From serving in churches over the past decade, formerly founding an international youth non-profit ministry and as a NAMI-certified support group facilitator and Crisis Textline counselor, Brittney has encountered a wide variety of mental health crises over the years, allowing her to distill theory into practical methodology. The short answer is no. It is a medical condition. It can be treated 99.5 times out of a 100. But many people do not know that they have an anxiety disorder or seek treatment. Some of the reasons for this is what they are being told in certain houses of faith. The good news is that is slowly changing. More faith based institutions are working with mental health professionals. There are practitioners that have both spiritual and mental health license credentials. This episode lightly touches on some of the statements that are made and factual information about anxiety and anxiety conditions/disorders. For the record, I am a heathen, second class. She also talks about mistakes churches and pastors have made in dealing with mental health, and how we can create church communities which are trauma informed.
