(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark India Supreme Court heard appeal about anti-conversion laws India's Supreme Court heard an appeal last week against anti-conversion laws in the country. The advocacy group Citizens for Justice and Peace has filed petitions against such laws since 2020. Twelve out of India's 28 states have anti-conversion laws. International Christian Concern warns of a “pattern of abuse by Hindu radical groups, who use the laws to initiate false complaints and pressure law enforcement to act against individual Christians and their communities, often without credible evidence.” U.S. military presence in Syria cut in half The United States is preparing to cut its military presence in Syria by half over the coming months. The U.S. military has about 2,000 troops in the Middle Eastern country. Sean Parnell, the chief spokesman for the Pentagon, said, “Recognizing the success the United States has had against ISIS, including its 2019 territorial defeat under President Trump, today the Secretary of Defense directed the consolidation of U.S. forces in Syria under Combined Joint Task Force.” Trump: 145% tariff on Chinese goods will come down On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that his 145% tariff on imports from China will likely come down. TRUMP: 145% is very high. It won't be that high. We were talking about fentanyl, where various elements built it up to 145%. No, it won't be anywhere near that high. But it won't be zero. Used to be zero. “We were just destroyed. China was taking us for a ride, and it's not going to happen. We're going to be very good to China. Have a great relationship with President Xi. But they would make billions and billions and billions of dollars a year, and they would build their military out of the United States, and what they made. So that won't happen, but they're going to do very well.” White House spokesman Kush Desai told FOX Business that the U.S. is not looking to unilaterally lower tariffs and that China must a agree to a trade deal. Trump's Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias meets On Tuesday, Trump administration officials held the inaugural meeting of the Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias in the federal government. Attorney General Pamela Bondi hosted the meeting. BONDI: “As President Trump has stated, the Biden administration engaged in an egregious pattern of targeting peaceful Christians while ignoring violent, anti-Christian offenses. The President is right. “Biden's Department of Justice abused and targeted Christians. Pro-life Christians were arrested and imprisoned for peacefully praying outside abortion clinics. The FBI spied on traditional Catholics in their parishes. President Biden declared Easter Sunday to be Transgender Day of Visibility. No longer.” Romans 13:3 says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.” 5 million student loan borrowers who stopped paying need to start again The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that it will resume collections of defaulted federal student loans. The Department has not collected on such loans since 2020. Currently, over 42 million borrowers owe more than $1.6 trillion in student debt. And over five million borrowers have not made a monthly payment in the last three years. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said, “American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies.” Notorious abortionist closes Colorado abortion mill The oldest and most notorious abortionist in Colorado announced he is closing his abortion mill. Warren Hern, age 86, opened the Boulder Abortion Clinic in 1975, killing thousands of unborn babies since then. In an interview with Channel 9 in Denver two years ago, Hern described his work of killing babies this way. HERN: “I have always felt this is an extremely important service, and there's never been a time when it's less important.” But you get a fuller appreciation of the mindset of abortionist Hern from a speech he gave via video at a Boulder pro-abortion march on July 9, 2022, just days after Roe v. Wade had been overturned on June 22, 2022. HERN: “The Republican Party is the face of fascism in America. Fox News is the voice of fascism in America. The ideology of this fascism is rooted in the white supremacist, Christian nationalist movement that has taken control of the Republican Party. “Your response to this mortal danger to women and to democracy in America must be to support every Democratic candidate for public office and to defeat every single Republican candidate for public office. Nothing else will do.” Troy Newman with Operation Rescue commented on the closure. He said, “Operation Rescue has some thirty years of history with this clinic – everything from activism on the sidewalk, documenting abortion injuries, filing complaints, and other legal efforts to expose wrongdoing. … We cannot praise God enough for the closure of this monstrous killing center.” Proverbs 10:6-7 says, “Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.” Definition of a regular churchgoer A recent study from Lifeway Research found 53% of U.S. adults consider someone a regular churchgoer if they attend services at least weekly. A previous study found a similar amount of Protestant churchgoers agree. However, only 16% of Protestant pastors say that regular churchgoers attend at least once a week. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted, “Pastors … are seeing churchgoers attend less often. But when Americans hear ‘regular churchgoer,' they picture someone attending every week or very close to it.” 18.6 million engaged with YouVersion Bible on Resurrection Sunday And finally, the YouVersion Bible app saw a record 18.6 million people engaging with Scripture on Resurrection Sunday this year. That's up 11% compared to last year. Leading up to Resurrection Sunday, Bible engagement increased by over 20% across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Bobby Gruenewald, the CEO of YouVersion Bible app, said they're seeing more interest in the Bible on other days too: “many of our record days for engagement have happened on seemingly ordinary days this year, with no specific reason for the spikes -- except that God is on the move.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, April 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Texas Schools Removing the Bible from Libraries The head of a Texas school district says the Bible had to be removed from school libraries because of a new state law prohibiting explicit books. The Christian Post reports that Canyon Independent School District Superintendent Darryle Flusche announced in an email earlier this week that, under House Bill 900, which was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2023, parts of the Holy Bible are deemed unsuitable. House Bill 900 was passed for the purpose of protecting schools from sexually explicit or vulgar content. In an email to parents, Flusche stated the full text of the Bible had been removed because it was categorized under this mandate, even though portions of the Bible will remain available. He went on to say that “through strong connections with local churches they would be happy to donate a Bible upon request.” House Bill 900 defines sexually explicit material as “any communication, language or material that describes or depicts sexual conduct in a manner that is patently offensive under the Texas Penal Code.” Proverbs 30:5 – “Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” Matthew 24:35 –Jesus said, “‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.'” TikTok Potential Ban in the US WNG.org reports that in a brief, two-page order, the high court on Wednesday agreed to hear TikTok's challenge to a federal law that could ban the social media and video-sharing platform in the United States. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act would implement a ban on January 19 unless China-based ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, sells TikTok's US operations. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in April. The court scheduled oral arguments for Friday, January 10, nine days before the ban would take effect. Attorneys representing TikTok and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland will have two hours to argue whether the legislation, as it applies to TikTok and ByteDance, violates the First Amendment. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act received bipartisan support from lawmakers. Supporters of the law cite concerns that TikTok's overwhelming popularity and Chinese ownership create security and censorship issues. Proponents of the law are also concerned about China using the app to collect sensitive data on American users. Meanwhile, ByteDance argues that the law is unconstitutional and illegally singles out TikTok for legislative punishment, violating equal protection and due process principles. ByteDance also says the law violates the Constitution's Fifth-Amendment protections against uncompensated property seizure. Church Attendance During the Christmas Season Is Half and Half A Lifeway Research study finds US adults are split on whether they'll be at church sometime this Christmas season – 47 percent say they typically attend church at Christmastime, while 48 percent say they do not, and 5 percent aren't sure. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research says, “The very name Christmas originates in the church's celebration of Jesus Christ's birth. In the mid-14th century, the words ‘Christ's Mass' were first merged as a single term for this celebration. While nine in ten Americans do something to celebrate Christmas, less than half typically attend church at Christmastime today.” Although that number is discouraging, the study goes on to show that many don't attend simply because they have not been invited. Fifty-six percent say they would likely attend church if someone they know invited them to attend at Christmastime. Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Missouri Man Found in Syria After Missing for 7 Months And good news for a family in Missouri! American citizen Travis Timmerman has been found in Syria after being unexpectedly detained for seven months while making a pilgrimage in an effort to deepen his Christian faith. Timmerman, a Missouri native, had been missing since June before resurfacing in a Damascus suburb. Timmerman was held in the notorious Sednaya prison, where the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad has arbitrarily detained tens of thousands. He was released as rebels overthrew the Assad regime this month. He told reporters that he crossed mountains into Syria from Lebanon because he was on a religious pilgrimage influenced by his intensive Bible reading and desire to deepen his understanding of Christianity. His entry into Syria from Lebanon by foot, however, led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment for several months. His detainment came to light only recently after Syrian rebel forces ousted Assad and the chaotic prison releases that followed. CBS News talked to Timmerman's sister Pixie Rogers, who says it's an amazing Christmas gift! ROGERS: “This is a whole, huge Christmas present that we all get to hear. I told my mom this morning, I was like, ‘It's a Christmas miracle!' I know she is very, very ecstatic [and joyous], overwhelmed, and just beyond super excited. I probably will cry and just tear up, and just—I just, I can't wait for that day.” US officials, told the media that Timmerman had been transferred to Jordan following his release and was currently under the care of State Department officials, according to Reuters. He was initially handed over to US troops at Tanf garrison near the tri-border area of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan before being flown out via US military helicopter. During his captivity, Timmerman was isolated but not mistreated, but he could hear the sounds of other prisoners being tortured nearby. In one attack, gunmen killed 18 Christians, including women and children, who were on their way to church. Benjamin Uzenda, former member of the Logo Local Government Council, told Morning Star News, “The Fulani herdsmen, armed with deadly weapons, shot sporadically on the Christians, butchered some victims with machetes, and destroyed their crops on farmlands.” Nigeria is the deadliest country in the world for Christians. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Notre Dame Cathedral rebuilt in 5 years after fire Five years after a fire burned down the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the building has been restored. After spending $845 million on construction, the cathedral opened its doors last weekend. (audio of music from the ceremony) The ceremony was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, Prince William of England, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, First Lady Jill Biden, and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Initial construction for the Notre Dame Cathedral began in AD 1163. Watch the 7-minute “CBS Sunday Morning” story. Americans rank Biden last in most recent 9 presidents A recent UK DailyMail and J.L. Partners random survey of U.S. registered voters found President Joe Biden ranked dead last among the most recent nine U.S. presidents. Remarkably, Biden's unfavorable rating beat out President Richard Nixon who resigned in shame after the Watergate scandal in 1974. However, Donald Trump was rated third worst president, indicating the harsh political divide characterizing the nation today. Ronald Reagan still ranks the best president, with the most favorable ratings. New York middle school reluctantly approved student-led Bible Club A New York middle school finally approved a student-led Bible Club this week. Thirteen-year-old Elijah Nelson tried to start the club last school year. He's the son of a pastor and told National Review, “Every Sunday I've gone to church, and I've thought more people should hear what is said in the Bible.” However, Waterville Central School District denied the request for a Bible Club, saying it was “unconstitutional.” Attorneys with First Liberty Institute sent a letter to the school, stating, “By denying the same benefits to the Bible club that it provides to all non-curricular clubs, the school has missed the concept of 'equal' in the Equal Access Act. The school's actions are unconstitutional, and its justification is legally flawed. The Supreme Court has made clear that the Free Exercise Clause protects religious practices by both students and employees in public school settings.” 29 abortion mills closed or stopped surgical abortions in 2024 Operation Rescue reports 29 abortion mills closed or halted abortions in the U.S. this year. Accounting for mills that opened or resumed abortions, the overall number of abortion locations decreased from 670 last year to 667 this year. While it's a small decrease, it's still significantly down from the 2,176 abortion mills in 1991. Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said, “There is no doubt that abortion facilities are struggling to survive in this post-Roe environment. As we conduct our extensive investigations, we continue to see evidence that abortion clinics are facing challenges hiring and keeping abortionists.” 47% of Americans attend church in December around Christmas And finally, Lifeway Research reports Americans are split on church attendance at Christmas. Forty-seven percent of U.S. adults say they typically attend church at Christmas time, while 48% say they do not typically attend. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted, “While church services draw more people in the Christmas season, their prime motivation isn't unified. The majority are drawn to celebrate the birth of Jesus, honoring Him as the Christ or promised Messiah. But others mostly join in because of the importance of family, their embrace of Christmas church tradition or to jumpstart Christmas vibes.” In John 4:23-24, Jesus reminds us, “The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, December 11th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Mohammad Abdul converted to Christianity from Islam in March. He now leads multiple groups in Bible study and prayer. This angered his Muslim relatives who have violently attacked him and his family multiple times. Despite the pushback, Abdul said, “You can beat me up more if you want, but I can tell you that [Jesus] has saved me. Whether I die or not, I live to serve Him.” Please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ in Somalia, ranked second on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. In John 16:33, Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” 2 million Evangelical South Koreans to pray This coming Sunday, two million evangelical Christians across many denominations in South Korea plan to join in prayer for their nation. Rev. Hyun-bo Son is the pastor of Segero Church in Busan, South Korea and is part of organizing the event. Rev. Son told Christian Daily International that the country is legally headed toward supporting sexually perverted lifestyles. He said, “The problem that Christians have with the issue is that if such laws are passed, then the Christian ecosystem will fail. It will become very difficult to live according to Biblical values.” Global inflation expected to drop to 3.5% by 2025 The International Monetary Fund released its latest World Economic Outlook yesterday. It expects global inflation to fall to 3.5% by the end of next year. The report expects the global economy to grow 3.2% this year and next year with the U.S. driving much of the growth. Meanwhile, China's economy may experience slower growth this year and next year. Elon Musk giving away a million dollars a day until election Over the weekend, Elon Musk announced his America Political Action Committee will be giving away $1 million every day until the November 5 election. Registered voters in swing states are eligible for the prize and must sign a petition in support of the First and Second Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The swing states are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. On October 19th, John from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania won a million dollars. JOHN: “My name is John, and I came here to see Elon Musk and support Trump to be the next president. And, you know, when he called me, the first thing that happened, you know, I screamed, and it was a million dollars, and I was pumping my arms in the air, and I went up and actually meeting Elon. “I kind of forgot about the money for a little bit, since he's such an influential figure for guys my age who are working hard every day. It's really important to get out and vote.” Then, on October 20th, Kristine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania won a million dollars for signing the free speech, pro-Second Amendment petition. KRISTINE: “My name is Kristine Fishel. I signed the petition. I took the time to vote early, and I think everyone should, too. The petition is fabulous because free speech, the right to bear arms -- these are things that we all have to remember as Americans how important they are and not to take them for granted. So, I think it's a way to actually bring people back to that and signing the petition. “Sitting in my seat when [Elon Musk] came on stage was so exciting. Hearing my name called was the surprise of a lifetime. It was so exciting, like, I don't win things, and a million dollars is crazy. So, I was super excited, and I still am.” Kamala: Musk “better behave himself or he will lose his privileges!” Speaking of businessman and free speech advocate Elon Musk, Kamala Harris is enraged about his participation in the election. Former Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, who has now endorsed Trump, said this. KENNEDY: “Kamala Harris says that [Elon] Musk better behave himself, or he will, quote lose his…” HARRIS: “lose his privileges and it should be taken down. They are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of, of, of, of oversight or regulation, and that has to stop.” KENNEDY: “And if Kamala Harris is elected, the powers behind her will quash that right.” New film exposes evil of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger The White Rose Resistance is releasing a new documentary on the life of Margaret Sanger, the founder of the abortion giant Planned Parenthood. The White Rose Resistance is the fastest growing pro-life organization in the U.S. The documentary, entitled “The 1916 Project,” is streaming for free on X until November 13 Seth Gruber, author of The 1916 Project: The Lyin', the Witch, and the War We're In, narrates the film. GRUBER: “We're going to expose and discover who the real Margaret Sanger was and how her attack and assault against the family in America explains our current culture of death and upside down world that we're living in today.” 80% of Protestants: Pastor has a duty to address current issues Lifeway Research reports 80% of Protestant churchgoers believe a pastor must address current issues to do their job. Sixty percent of Protestant churchgoers say their pastor addresses current issues in a sermon most weeks. Scott McConnell, the Executive Director of Lifeway Research, said, “As American culture increasingly includes fewer overtly Christian elements and more non-Christian ideas, churchgoers are hungry to know what the Bible says about life's issues.” 2 Timothy 2:15-16 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Former homosexuals march in Chicago And finally, hundreds of Christians celebrated their freedom from sexually perverted lifestyles on Saturday at Chicago's Lincoln Park. The event was led by the Freedom March whose repentant participants call themselves the Rainbow Revival. M.J. Nixon helped lead the first Freedom March in Washington, D.C. NIXON: “We are a collection of the most wild, radical, former LGBT individuals, alongside the body of Christ, coming together in this hour to lift up the name of Jesus. He draws all men to Himself. We've come together today to worship, to testify, and we are going to march today.” She added, “The Lord has called Rainbow Revival to go into the heart of cities and testify in the public square that entrapped, ensnared people can be freed from false identities – glorifying Jesus and making a fool of the enemy.” Romans 6:22 says, “But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, October 23rd, in the year of our Lord 2024. Religious Liberty Violations in Ukraine Reported on Christiantoday.com Christians are suffering serious religious liberty violations in Russia and Russian-occupied Ukraine. Release International warned that the scaled of the hostility is resulting in imprisonment, torture and murder. In Ukraine, a Christian leader has been jailed over public opposition to the war and other churches that share this view are at risk of having their buildings demolished or are receiving other forms of intimidation. International Religious Freedom released a report saying ‘In Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine de facto authorities banned religious groups, raided houses of worship and many religious leaders were taken.' To date several of the priest's whereabouts are still unknown. In Russia a Pastor, Eduard Charov, who runs a homeless shelter is due to stand trial this month for a social media post that said ‘Would Jesus Christ have gone to kill in Ukraine?' Pastor Charov told a media outlet ‘I already have a suitcase packed at home. My wife will look after the shelter in the meantime. And I will continue to help people in prison. There are people in need everywhere' The 53 year old could face a prison sentence of up to 7 years and a fine of up to one million roubles. Pray for those who are currently facing intense persecution in Ukraine and Russia. Psalm 3:1-3 O LORD, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation for him in God. But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. Survey Proves Ignorance Among Modern Church Goers CBN News reports that LifeWay Research released a new survey that shows that 1 in 10 (that's 11%) of Protestant church goers accidentally offer New Testament stories when asked to share their favorite Old Testament stories, proving ignorance among modern church goers. Seven percent offer no story at all and 3 percent simply don't know. Scott McConnell who is the executive director of Lifeway Research said, ‘While church goers may open a Bible at church, at least 1 in 5 may not be familiar with how it's organized and what distinguishes the New Testament from the Old Testament.' The study logically concludes that confidence in accurately retelling Bible stories is generally highest among those with evangelical beliefs and for those who attend church services on a regular basis. The study also showed the 3 most popular Old Testament stories among church goers are 3) The Book of Genesis at 10% 2) The story of Noah at 11% and number 1) The story of Moses and the Exodus at 13%. Proverbs 2:6 says, For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. One Million Iranian Muslims Convert to Christianity On a positive, very encouraging note it has been reported that around 1 million Muslims have accepted Jesus Christ in the country of Iran as well as tens of thousands of mosques closing their doors. In fact a senior cleric in Iran revealed that 50,000 of the nation's 75,000 mosques have closed because of plummeting numbers of people who attend. So what is the response of the country of Iran to such a massive movement within the people? Todd Nettleton with Voice of Martyrs told CBN News this concerning Iran. NETTLETON: “It is not something that is making the regime happy, and really, in many ways, they are seeking to solidify their power and to crush any kind of dissent. They certainly see the growth of the church. They certainly see Christian evangelism as a form of dissent. We've heard multiple stories, this year, of a Bible study, a home church, being raided. Everyone there is photographed. Everyone there is questioned, but then the leader of meeting is held on to. They are arrested. They are detained. They are put in prison.” But this movement for Christ is not slowing down! Don Shenk who has a radio ministry called Tide Ministry had this to say. SHENK: “We get responses from listeners who say, ‘You know, now I understand that God loves me. I always thought that God wanted to punish me.' And I think that there's an awakening, as I said, that's taking place, across the Muslim world. Pray that God continues this mighty revival in the Middle East! Ezekiel 34:11 reminds us about the words of God Himself. Behold I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. Electric Vehicles Lose Value at a Faster Rate Than Gas Powered Vehicles Have an electric car? While you might not be spending as much money on gas as you were before, but you are losing when it comes to the value of that vehicle. Straight Arrow News reports that Electric vehicles are losing their value at a faster rate than their gas powered counterparts. The normal depreciation rate for gas powered cars is about 10 to 15 percent. However, EV models from automakers like Tesla, Ford and even Porsche have seen their values drop by as much as 50 percent within just 12 months. That translates to a loss of nearly $600 per day! But if you are looking to purchase an electric vehicle this is a good time to buy as you can expect to pay around 8% less on an EV than on a gas powered used vehicle And that's The World View on this Monday, August 19th, in the year of our Lord 2024. It's Wednesday, May 10th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark 60 people, mostly Christians, were killed in Manipur, India Last Wednesday, radical Hindus killed nearly 60 people in India's northeastern state of Manipur. Many of those who died were Christians. The wave of attacks also led to the destruction or burning of over 50 churches across different denominations. At least 13,000 people have been displaced. Many more have fled to nearby states that are predominantly Christian. Christians identified the Meitei people as their attackers. The Meitei are mostly Hindu and are the dominant ethnic group in Manipur. Please pray for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ in India. 1 Corinthians 12:26-27 says, “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” World Health Organization: COVID no longer an emergency Last Friday, the World Health Organization said it no longer considers COVID-19 a global health emergency. The announcement comes over three years after the W.H.O. originally declared a public health emergency of international concern. The World Health Organization says at least seven million people have died in the pandemic. Meanwhile, the U.S. public health emergency for COVID-19 is set to expire tomorrow. Many countries ended coronavirus measures last year, like Germany, France, and the U.K. CDC director will step down The White House announced last Friday that the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is resigning. Rochelle Walensky directed the CDC for over two years during the Biden administration. Last year, Walensky began to reorganize the agency, saying its “performance did not reliably meet expectations.” She has faced criticism for confusing public health messaging. Trust in the CDC has plummeted since 2020. And the agency faces multiple lawsuits for its performance and exercise of power. 100 non-profit colleges closed or merged A study by Higher Ed Drive found that nearly 100 non-profit colleges since 2016 have closed, merged, or have announced plans to do so. Forty of those consolidations occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020. Of those, nearly half were Christian colleges that shut down or merged. The response to the pandemic appears to have been the final straw for small religious colleges already facing declining enrollment and financial challenges. Only 13% of 8th graders are proficient in history Speaking of education, the National Center for Education Statistics released its report card for U.S. public school students. Only 13% of eighth graders are proficient in U.S. history, down from 14% in 2018 but unchanged compared to 1994. Twenty percent of eighth graders were proficient in civics, down from 21% in 2018. The percentage of students who perform below the basic level in both subjects has only been increasing in recent years. Last year, the Nation's Report Card found similar declines in reading and math scores for middle schoolers. These declines came during COVID-19 restrictions on in-person learning. 500,000 fewer Southern Baptists Lifeway Research released data on the Southern Baptist Convention yesterday. The denomination experienced increased baptisms, giving, and in-person worship attendance last year. However, the overall membership of the SBC declined by nearly half a million people last year to 13.2 million members. That's the largest drop in membership in over 100 years. Scott McConnell with Lifeway Research said, “Much of the downward movement we are seeing in membership reflects people who stopped participating in an individual congregation years ago and the record keeping is finally catching up.” 40 Days for Life saved 680 babies And finally, 40 Days for Life reports their latest campaign saved 680 babies from abortion. Pro-life The prayer initiative ran from February 22 to April 2 in cities around the world. Pro-life Christians stand outside abortion mills, during that time period, pray for the women walking past, and encourage them to choose life. Shawn Carney with 40 Days for Life tweeted, “The first two 40 Days for Life campaigns following the overturning of Roe vs Wade were the largest EVER. We gained US cities despite losing some because the abortion facility closed. Another example that pro-lifers aren't going away.” Since it began in 2007, 40 Days for Life has helped save 23,000 babies saved from abortion, closed 138 abortion mills, and prompted 200 abortion workers to quit their jobs. Praise God! Proverbs 24:11 says, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, May 10th in the year of our Lord 2023. It's Wednesday, May 3rd, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Religious Liberty Commission recommends State Dept. warn 17 countries The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released its annual report on Monday. The report recommends 17 countries for the State Department's list of Countries of Particular Concern for religious liberty violations. New recommendations for the list include Cuba and Nicaragua. The report again recommends Nigeria and India as Countries of Particular Concern even though the State Department has refused to designate them as such before. Other countries on the recommended list include Afghanistan, Burma, China, Iran, and North Korea. Nearly all the countries on the list are also on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Abraham Cooper with the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom told CBN News attacks on religious freedom are increasing. Cooper: “Violations are increasing. The threats, the tensions are increasing worldwide This is a very difficult time for religious freedom all over the globe, including here in the United States.” Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.” Over 55 years, 10 million unborn babies killed in United Kingdom Last week marked 55 years since the Abortion Act went into effect in the United Kingdom. Since then, over 10 million unborn babies were murdered in the womb across England, Scotland, and Wales. Abortions in the U.K. have increased in recent years since the approval of abortion pill access through the mail. Supreme Court could limit power of federal agencies On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case that could limit the power of federal agencies. The case challenges a previous decision that allowed federal agencies, not the courts, to interpret laws where the statute is ambiguous. The case has implications for religious liberty. Matt Bowman with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “Unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats are weaponizing federal laws to violate Americans' most fundamental rights . . . federal agency officials frequently disrespect Americans' most cherished principles—including religious freedom and the sanctity of life—by imposing personal political agendas that Congress has not authorized.” 1 in 4 high school students are sexually perverted or questioning sexuality The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data from 2021 about the lifestyles of high school students. The study found that one in four students identify with sexually perverted lifestyles or are questioning their sexuality. The percentage is up from 11% in 2015. Over 70% of students still say they are heterosexual. Oklahoma bans transgender drugs and surgeries for kids Oklahoma is the latest state to ban hormone drugs and sex mutilating surgeries for children. Republican Governor Kevin Stitt signed the law on Monday. Last Friday, Montana's Republican Governor Greg Gianforte also signed a similar law. At least 16 states have banned or restricted such transgender treatments. And nearly two dozen states are considering such bans. Snail-paced U.S. economic growth Last week, the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. gross domestic product rose by only 1.1% during the first quarter of this year. That's below the expected economic growth of 2%. With the heightened interest rates, business spending was down during the first quarter; however, consumer spending was up, contributing the most to the first quarter growth. Many economists are expecting a recession later this year. 77% of U.S. Protestants believe tithing is Biblical And finally, a new survey from Lifeway Research found 77% of Protestant churchgoers believe tithing is a Biblical command that still applies today. However, that's down from 83% in 2017. Ironically, 10% of respondents said tithing is not required today, and 13% are not sure. Demographically, young adults are the least likely to agree with tithing. Denominationally, Lutherans are the least likely to agree. Despite three fourths of churchgoers saying they believe in tithing, only 51% actually give 10% of their income to their church. Scott McConnell with Lifeway Research said, “Giving 10% of your earnings to God is still a widespread standard among churchgoers. The small decline [among those] considering tithing a command appears to be more from a lack of teaching on the subject than a rejection of such teaching.” Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, May 3rd in the year of our Lord 2023. 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Dan Iten are joined by Chuck Peters, who serves as the Director of Lifeway Kids and Scott McConnell, who serves as the Executive Director of Lifeway Research. In this episode, they discuss the current trends, challenges, and needs of Generation Z and Generation Alpha in kids' ministry. The conversation highlights the importance of adapting to the needs of younger generations, creating a culture of belonging, and addressing the need for identity. They also talk about Lifeway's book called “Flip the Script” which is a resource that offers tools for preschool kids and student ministries to effectively reach Gen Z and Alpha. Overall, the episode provides valuable insights for church leaders seeking to connect with and minister to younger generations. BEST QUOTES "We can't do what we've always done and expect a different outcome." – Chuck Peters "The biggest disconnect is assuming that kids think how we do." – Chuck Peters "The most connected generation in history through technology is simultaneously the loneliest and most isolated generation ever." – Scott McConnell "We have an epidemic of loneliness, of isolation, of separation. In real life, kids don't have real relationships." – Scott McConnell "We need to create a culture of belonging and speak to the need for identity among younger generations." – Chuck Peters "Once they find a place to belong, it heavily influences their identity." – Chuck Peters "We as the church have to adapt, based on the research, to use different approaches to connect with kids in ways that are actually meaningful." – Scott McConnell RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Flip the Script: Disrupting Tradition for the Sake of the Next Generation by Chuck Peters, Jana Magruder, and Stephanie Salvatore Hyfi: A Digital Curriculum to Reach the Next Generation of Kids and Students
The U.S. Supreme Court placed a temporary hold Friday afternoon (April 14) on a week-old decision that suspended the federal government's 2000 approval of the abortion pill; In a piece in the Baptist Press Toolbox, Scott McConnell writes, Everyone in our community needs Christ, but many times we can feel lost knowing how to help our congregation start connecting with people.
Scott McConnell joins us for the second time on the podcast to discuss a whole range of issues affecting the Northern Territory. When we last spoke to Scott he was the independent member for Stuart (now known as Gwoja). On this episode Scott canvasses many of the issues that directly affect indigenous Australians on a day to day basis. Scott is one of the most qualified people to discuss the issues affecting the Northern Territory as he has spent his whole life in the NT. In addition, he has truly walked in both worlds throughout his life. Born in Alice Springs and raised in Willowra in an aboriginal community Scott recollects fondly his upbringing where he learnt a lot from aboriginal elders who were running the cattle station he lived on. A term in Territory politics taught him a lot about the machinations of the political system in the NT and particularly how the parties operate. On this episode we talk about how there needs to be change that is more inclusive for all Territorians. By Scott's own admission not everyone agrees with his views but you can't argue that he has Territorians best interests at heart. This is Scott's Territory Story part 2. It's Thursday, August 11th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistan jailing Christians New reports from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom highlight the persecution of Christians in Iran and Pakistan. In Pakistan, Muslims accuse Christians of blasphemy against the Islam faith. They also target believers with lynchings, mob violence, forced conversions, and the destruction of church property. Fifty-five people are imprisoned in the country on charges of blasphemy against Islam. Christians accused of blasphemy face violence, prison, and death. Iran spreading anti-Christian propaganda In Iran, the government is using media outlets to spread anti-Christian propaganda. Christians then face discrimination from their community because of the false messaging. Officials also use a pretext of national security to target Christian converts. Jesus said in Matthew 5:11, “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.” India's first March for Life Christians in India held the country's first National March for Life yesterday. Pro-lifers also observed a day of mourning in remembrance of the hundreds of millions of unborn babies killed in abortion over the last 50 years. India legalized abortion in 1971. Since then, over 15 million babies are murdered in the womb every year, totaling nearly 800 million deaths. Baby girls are often targeted in abortion. A 2018 government report found 63 million girls were “missing” from the population. Minnesota jury affirms Christian pharmacist's pro-life stand Last Friday, a Minnesota jury ruled in favor of a Christian pharmacist who refused to fill a contraception prescription because of his religious beliefs. Andrea Anderson filed the lawsuit against pharmacist George Badeaux in 2019 after he declined to provide the contraceptive. He told Fox News he could not be part of ending a human life. Listen. BADEAUX: “I couldn't fill this prescription because one of the possible mechanisms of action of the medication is that it can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg into the uterus. And, in my mind, that would be ending a new human life.” Biden expands taxpayer funding of abortion On Sunday, the U.S. Senate passed the $430 billion Inflation Reduction Act. Sadly, the bill expands taxpayer funding of abortion through the Obamacare health insurance plans. The bill also gives $80 billion to the IRS to conduct enforcement activities. Pro-life activists are concerned about this in light of previous IRS discrimination against conservative groups. Last Monday, House Democrats demanded the IRS and U.S. Treasury review the tax status of the evangelical group Family Research Council. Isaiah 10:1-2 says, “Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees . . . to rob the needy of justice, and to take what is right from the poor of My people.” GOP leaders denounce FBI raid of Trump's home GOP leaders are denouncing the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home on Monday. The raid reportedly involved classified documents allegedly taken by Trump after he left the White House. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called the raid “weaponized politicization” by the Justice Department. The California Republican also said, “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.” Immigration will drive America's population growth The Congressional Budget Office released a Demographic Outlook report last month. The report anticipates the U.S. population will increase from 335 million to 369 million over the next 30 years. Immigration is expected to drive America's population growth in the next 20 years as deaths outpace births. The report predicts the fertility rate will increase from 1.60 births per woman to 1.75 births by 2031. That's still below the replacement rate of 2.1. Pastors: Comfort is America's #1 idol And finally, a new study by Lifeway Research found that most pastors believe modern-day idols have influenced their congregations. Over half of U.S. Protestant pastors say comfort, control or security, money, and approval are idols in their churches. Thirty percent of pastors said comfort was the most influential idol. Scott McConnell with Lifeway Research said, “The largest number of congregations battle the influence of first-world comforts, and churches' second most common modern-day idol is the commitment to keeping secure the comforts they already have.” Paul wrote in Philippians 3:8, “I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ." One statistic that is not true is young adults leave the church and never come back. - Scott McConnellOur latest research was in 2021, and only 1.5% of pastors are stepping away from the pastorate in a year. - Scott McConnellWe tend to overinflate leaving rates (young adults and pastors). - Scott McConnellWe tend to want to toss out membership numbers these days because they aren't great, but they are still relevant and an important indicator - Scott McConnellWe are trying to understand the discipleship needs so we can help people take a step closer to Christ and to encourage them to spur one another on to love and good deeds. - Scott McConnellIf you are anything but a small congregation church you cannot cover all the discipleship needs for each person, so tools and assessments are going to be a great systematic tool. - Scott McConnellOne of the challenges we face in surveys is to ask about more than just actions, we try to get at their desires, heart issues, and beliefs. - Scott McConnellWe asked what statistically predicts a closer walk with God and found that praying for opportunities to share your faith with others moved into the top spot. - Scott McConnell29% of Americans indicate no religious preference/atheist/agnostic and that percentage has gone up 1% every year for the past decade. - Scott McConnellWe spend significant time studying other world religions statistically, if we are about maximizing, then we need to be spending at least as much time reaching the atheist or agnostic. - Zach Zehnder People, whether they are followers of another religion or no religion, still have core human needs and if we can be sharing the gospel in a way that points to Jesus and how he satisfies in a way that no other source can, that's our opportunity. Scott McConnellThe numbers you see from statistics never tell the whole story. If the numbers look impossible, the Holy Spirit is still working. - Scott McConnellPeople that are in a small group on a weekly basis are more likely to read their Bible, serve within and outside the church, tithe, and volunteer. - Scott McConnellA young person is 3.5 more times to stay in church if at least three adults poured into them at a young age and they can name them. - Scott McConnellYoung people's failures tend to be those that we pass on to them or reactions to the previous generation. - Scott McConnellAs parents, one of the biggest encouragement you can give is to keep engaging with your teens and trying even if you are only getting one word back. - Scott McConnellScott McConnell's Challenge of the week: Have a short conversation with God about opportunities that you can have this week to share your faith. BEST QUOTES "Several things that land at the top of the list for a pastor's needs are stress, their own disciple-making, consistently exercising, avoiding over-commitment and overwork, and time management.""Seven out of ten pastors need to invest time in their consistency when it comes to personal prayer.""Almost seven out of ten pastors say they need to be more consistent in their Bible reading that is not related to sermon prep.""The relationship with God is so vital for leaders and pastors. You have to be living it out yourself to ask people to do the same.""It can be so easy as a pastor with all the demands on you to take the personal things and say, 'I'll get to that later.' But really you have to be intentional and proactive when it comes to self-care and boundaries.""The best way to slowly build yourself back up is to have someone walking along with you.""Younger pastors are more likely to indicate that they need to work on building relationships with other pastors.""Fifty-one percent of older pastors say the consistency of taking a sabbath is something they need to work on." "Worship attendance is still running, on average. about 75% of what it was pre-Covid." "We've got to move in our thinking from looking at the numbers, to making sure you are looking at the names. Who exactly is not back? We need to connect with them personally." "Those who study jobs will talk about the fact that the pastor role has not only a large number of things that you need to be skilled at, but you need to be able to switch between them very quickly." "There's not one silver bullet we can do to suddenly meet the needs of pastors this year, because when it comes to 'What's your one biggest need?' they are really spread out." https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=138624 There's an enormous appetite among right-wingers I know to believe that the Derek Chauvin verdict represents the end of America (Tucker Carlson taps into this yearning). I don't share this apocalyptic vision. Do you have a theory for why so many people want to believe that America is done? My view is that people who are convinced the end is nigh are immature. They need drama because their lives are empty, and they can't handle things in public life not going their way because they are weak. I'm not impressed by the caliber of people who think America is over. They remind me of those old authors who proclaim the book is dead because nobody is reading their books. Scott McConnell replies: “Yeah, conviction on negligent manslaughter was the right thing for crappy policing, but murder conviction was in the cards. If the left wins the midterms though, that would be worrisome. But there is a nascent left wing totalitarianism arising, scary and explains why.” Bird: “I think if I could sum up the unease at the verdict, it's that it seems like all the rioting and destruction has been rewarded and affirmed.” Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSFVD7Xfhn7sJY8LAIQmH8Q/join https://odysee.com/@LukeFordLive, https://lbry.tv/@LukeFord, https://rumble.com/lukeford https://dlive.tv/lukefordlivestreams Listener Call In #: 1-310-997-4596 Superchat: https://entropystream.live/app/lukefordlive Bitchute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/lukeford/ Soundcloud MP3s: https://soundcloud.com/luke-ford-666431593 Code of Conduct: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=125692 https://www.patreon.com/lukeford http://lukeford.net Email me: lukeisback@gmail.com or DM me on Twitter.com/lukeford Support the show | https://www.streamlabs.com/lukeford, https://patreon.com/lukeford, https://PayPal.Me/lukeisback Facebook: http://facebook.com/lukecford Feel free to clip my videos. A 2016 LifeWay Research study found 1 in 5 Americans said they had read all of the Bible at least once. However, more than half said they have read little or none of it. “Churchgoers are ready to defend the Bible as true and as a faithful moral standard,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. “But most admit they stumble on understanding the specific meaning as they read.” So, how can you study the Bible effectively and gain understanding? Today on Educate For Life, Kevin has as his guest Kay Arthur. Kay Lee Arthur (born November 11, 1933) is an international Bible teacher, four-time ECPA Christian Book Award winning author, and co-founder of Precept Ministries International. Kay teaches inductive Bible study, and has authored many inductive Bible study workbooks. The Inductive method of studying the Bible, is a set of steps to follow to "mine" the details of the given book under study. Kay Arthur’s exciting, practical approach to studying the Bible has helped millions of people discover the truth of God’s Word for themselves over the past five decades. Tune in to hear more about effective ways to study the Bible and learn about Kay’s own journey to faith. Scott McConnell was born in Willowra, an aboriginal community about 300km north-west of Alice Springs. He didn’t learn to read or write until he was in his teens. In fact he was far more comfortable and conversant in the local aboriginal dialect (Walpri) than he was in English. After working as a ranger and marrying a lady from Chicago, Scott got involved in Territory politics and ran for the seat of Stuart. He won the seat as a member of the Labor party defeating a Minister in the process. However things didn’t go as planned and Scott decided to quit the Labor party and become an independent. Scott’s connection with first Australians has given him a unique perspective on how the Territory could be governed. How much of a church's budget should go toward staff? What is the average salary of a pastor in America? What are some common mistakes churches make when it comes to compensation? What are some trends we are seeing in research when it comes to church staff and salaries? BEST QUOTES "The number one expense at most churches is people, followed quickly by facility costs.""The median we are seeing in the studies we have done is 47% of the budget spent on salaries.""Even if you are just giving a cost of living increase to keep up with inflation, you can quickly get out of whack and most churches start cutting ministries.""Ministry is never going to have less people if you do it right.""Every person is a member of the body and should be engaged in the work of Christ.""We see a model of getting a lot of ministry done by African American church plants while they are still small and young because they are training up laity to take on the work of ministry.""Leading a volunteer is much harder than leading your employee.""The average clergy salary is $50,800.""When insurance is missing, especially medical insurance, it creates a lot of stress on a household and ministry is less effective when those benefits are not there for a ministry family.""Being at a church one more year tends to have a negative impact on a pastor's compensation in total." Over this fall? Over this year? BEST QUOTES "About 66% of young adults who attend a protestant church for at least a year in high school step away from church for at least a year between ages 18 and 22.""Of those young adults that dropped out, one of the reasons that jumped the most is the politics in the church - political views being voiced in the church that the student didn't agree with.""Teach a teenager how to see the world from a biblical standpoint and how to sit with their Bible and discover for themselves what they think and how to believe.""We are not teaching young people what it means to be truly connected to a local body of believers called a church.""The number one indicator of students staying connected to a church is when they could identify three spiritual mentors during their time in high school they were three times more likely to stay connected to the church in college.""Your care of that person's life will overcome a lack of chemistry.""Students are amazingly good at sniffing out things that are not genuine.""27% of these students said that they had spiritual conversations in the home.""Equip parents to have a spiritual conversation in their home with their children.""One of the best things we can show them is to get them to fall in love with God's Word." In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Daniel Im are joined by Scott McConnell, Executive Director of LifeWay Research. During their conversation, they discuss the following questions: How do you know your church is growing? What's the difference between church growth and reproduction and multiplication? What are the 5 levels and what is the research about? What did you discover in the research? What did you discover about the state of the church? BEST QUOTES “A good thing to compare is the growth rate of your church to the growth rate of your city." "If you are in a community that has 25% turnover every year, and you are holding steady, that is a huge accomplishment." "Reproduction and multiplication is an investment and activity outside of your church. You are working to open new churches outside of your church." "This was a chance to nationally register how many churches are in each of the levels." "93% of protestant churches did not help a church open their doors this last year." "If you trace it back, there are a lot of churches that helped open another church once or twice in their history." "It's planting churches again and again that gets you in the zone of reproduction." "Attendance is the biggest piece in determining if a church is adding, subtracting, or plateauing." "The larger churches that are more likely to be adding are getting people from smaller churches." "54% of pastors say that fewer than 10 people indicated a new commitment to Christ in the last year." "As your church begins to show the love of Christ to each other that means some attention is turned from reaching new people." "28% of churches are declining in their attendance. 39% are in a growth trajectory." "Economically churches are in a great spot. Only 15% of churches reported that they had a decline in offerings." 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Daniel Im are joined by Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. During their conversation, they discuss the following questions: Have you ever left a church as an attender and why? What are the reasons church leaders think people leave their church? What does the research actually say? What’s the most surprising thing you discovered in the research? What do churchgoers want in their churches? BEST QUOTES “I assume people come or go from your church because of either preaching, worship, or kids." “In this economy, there are so many things that are subscription based. If I’m merely ‘subscribing’ to a church instead of becoming a part of the body, there are multiple opportunities for me to opt out.” “Only 57% of churchgoers would describe themselves as completely committed to continuing to attend their current church.” “By the time you find out someone is considering leaving your church, they are actively looking and pretty much gone. You can’t assume you will know ahead of time someone is on the brink of leaving.” “Stepping away from leadership means ‘I’m starting to look’ in a lot of cases.” “The number one reason people gave that they would leave their church is doctrine.” “When we asked people what they would like more of from their current church, there are things on that list that include serving, which implied that people want to serve more.” “In total, 1 out of 4 churchgoers indicated that they want their church to improve. Either saying ‘give me help in finding new ways I can serve’ or ‘give me more chances to serve.’” “If we are listening a little more to the talents and gifts people are bringing to the church, we can be creating roles within the church for them to help them fit.” “They are not looking for another job, they already have one of those. They are looking for something more missional.” “The second highest reason for switching churches as an adult was that you did not feel engaged or involved in meaningful work at the church.” RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Pipeline 2018 Conference Research results: "Churchgoers stick around for theology, not music or preachers" Keep Asking LifeWay Research podcast

Do people have the ability to turn to God on their own initiative? Can individuals contribute to their own salvation? Did God create Jesus? These are 3 of nearly 47 positions LifeWay Research asked 3,000 Americans in a recent study for Ligonier Ministries on heresy. The study, which included a sample of 586 evangelicals, asked respondents their beliefs on 47 theological statements. When the report was released two years ago, the results indicated that many self-identified evangelicals held unorthodox views on the Trinity and salvation. This year, the National Association of Evangelicals and LifeWay Research developed a new definition of evangelical. But the results were similar. LifeWay Research director Scott McConnell doesn’t think researchers’ definition of evangelical needs to change, but he does believe the survey suggests just how “shallow many people’s beliefs are.” “The fact is that God’s message to us and God’s relationship to us is really a tapestry. Each of those threads of belief and love and relationship are woven together,” said McConnell. “It takes an individual really loving God enough to want to know this whole message and want to understand how it fits together.” One potential obstacle: People—evangelicals—don’t take or make this time to learn about God. “Sometimes, as Christians in America, we’re so busy running from one thing to another without taking the time to really closely see how this relationship with God works,” said McConnell. “I think you can see this in the variety of responses [to this survey] where people are in the right theologically on several questions and then completely missing it on others.” McConnell joined Morgan and Ted on Quick to Listen this week to discuss what contributes to Christians’ misunderstandings of the Holy Spirit, what the limits of these findings are, and if pastors should preach any differently in light of the survey results.
The Nones or "unaffiliated" are already the nation's second largest group. But they're far from a monolith, ranging from fiery atheists to "apatheists," or vaguely spiritual folks who have disconnected from denominational brands and apathetic about the whole business. What does it mean to the public square — and to voting patterns, which correlate closely to religious identity — when one in four Americans are unaware or uninterested in the religious distinctions of particular faiths?
