Bryan Murray was born and raised in Long Beach, California, and met his future wife, Kristine Clawson, while attending Brigham Young University when they went skiing together with their home evening group. Bryan attended medical school at the University of Kentucky then completed an internal medicine residency with the UCSF San Joaquin Valley Program. He worked with a small group practice in Payson, Utah, before moving the family to Anacortes, Washington, where he joined a small internal medicine group and helped start a hospitalist program at Island Hospital in Anacortes. He retired from medicine in February 2022 and two short months later he and Kristine began a full-time mission as Area Medical Advisor to the North America Northeast Area. They also filled a mission assignment as support to a Young Single Adult branch in the Hingham, Massachusetts Stake. Bryan currently serves as the ward music chairman and Kristine serves as the Relief Society president in the newly-created Fidalgo Island Ward in Anacortes. EPISODE 100, BABY! We did it, y'all. 100 episodes of THE Kraken Pod are officially in the books. What a ride. Episode 100's Kraken Reaction (5:40) hits The Depths early as the boys pontificate on what position Joey would play if he were an NHL'er, why the good vibes are still rolling despite the Seattle Kraken losing their last two in a shootout and overtime, the impact of the Tomas Totar trade and the lower body industry, and a recap of an absolute beatdown of Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks. Next, in NHL News, Jeff and Joey discuss the firing of D.J. Smith in Ottawa, his history with the organization, who is stepping up in his role, and a tribute by Jeff to Ottawa and Detroit Red Wings legend Bryan Murray. For No Dumb Questions (40:20), with Jacques Martin stepping in to coach the Ottawa Senators for his second stint with the team, Joey asks if this is the first time someone has coached the same team twice in the NHL which leads to a breakdown of Ottawa's history including their run at the Stanley Cup in 2003 that had them losing in 7 games in the Eastern Conference Final to the eventual champion, New Jersey Devils. Jeff surprises Joey by opting to pass on Three Stars of the Week to surprise him with his top 5 (6) moments from The Kraken Pod over the past three seasons and hilarity ensues as the two reminisce on the past as well as discuss plans for the future that include guilt and blackmailing of future guests. At the root of it all, Jason Blaine was born to sing, write and entertain. His love for country music has taken him to the forefront of the Canadian music scene where he has remained for over a decade. With over 12 Top 10 singles in Canada including hits such as “Country Side” and “Friends of Mine”, he has also become a craftsmen of hits for other people including Chris Jansen, Parmalee, Petric and Madeline Merlo and others. Originally from Pembroke, Ontario, Blaine moved to Nashville in the fall of 2006 with his wife Amy and their three-month-old baby girl. He burst onto the scene in a big way in 2007 with his first #1 hit single “Rock In My Boot” which led to multiple CCMA nominations and paved the way for a string of hit singles and major festival appearances across the country. Perhaps the biggest game changer came in 2012 when he released the biographical “They Don't Make ‘Em Like That Anymore”, which was written for his grandfather. The song was one of his biggest hits connecting with fans of all generations and eventually went on to win CCMA Single of the Year that same year. In between releasing hit songs and co-headling tours with Tebey, Chad Brownlee and Deric Ruttan, Blaine also found time to start up his annual Jason Blaine Celebrity Charity Golf Classic. Over the past five years, fellow artists and hockey legends ranging from Dallas Smith, Tim Hicks, and Gord Bamford, to Doug Gilmour and Bryan Murray have all contributed to helping raise over $500,000 for various hometown charities in Pembroke. Now, a multiple CCMA, SOCAN & CMAO award winner with over 20+ radio hits, six full length albums, over 12 million digital streams, and Jason still feels like he's just getting started. Writing full time within Nashville's publishing community, Jason resides in Hendersonville, Tennessee with his wife Amy and their four children. This past summer the next chapter began as he began work on his brand new album, which was produced by Jay Tooke. The project breathes new life while lending itself to what Jason does best; great country music performed by one of Canada's most distinctive voices, telling stories of home, love, and nights on the town. As a craftsmen of songs, Jason found and wrote songs for the project which embody his artistry and move him into the next season of his career.

How does increased power impact human minds? It's almost not someone's fault if empathy wanes while power accumulates. In fact, it's basically inevitable.  Joe Smarro, one of the subjects of the HBO documentary, "Crisis Cops: Ernie and Joe," is an exception to the rule. Joe is a police officer and trainer who gives a Master Class in how to sidestep fate when encountering people in crisis. We hear a few fugues from Joe illustrating what it's like to be a cop in these situations. And we give it the post-fugue treatment with inner voice, helping us to understand the cognitive effects of power and how to avoid unnecessary conflict.Join us for the third and final part of this series on fate and biology. --Credits:Written and produced by Gabriel Berezin.Original music and sound design by Grant Zubritsky. Why do we help strangers? And why do we love revenge stories so much?  The same thing that connects those questions connects us all - bonding. There's an invisible line between groups of people - it can be a thin dotted line between acquaintances, a steel girder between mother and child, or a series of chain links between millions of people in the same country. In Part 2 of this series on fate and biology, we identify the brain chemical that plays a central role in how we bond, and explore why certain group behaviors are inevitable. --Credits:Written and produced by Gabriel Berezin.Original music and sound design by Kirk Schoenherr and additional music by Grant Zubritsky.Opening and closing music by Monuments - featuring Grant Zubritsky (bass), Robby Sinclair (drums) and Bryan Murray (saxophone), Gabriel Berezin (guitar).Editorial assistance by Melissa "Monty" Montan.Logo design by Justin Montan.Follow Fugues on Twitter and Instagram.Help us out - rate and comment on iTunes!Further reading:Part 1 of Fate and Biology: The Brain's Molotov CocktailCounting to Twelve (the ultimate funk on Sesame Street)Won't You Be My Neighbor (Mr. Rogers Documentary)Philadelphia greases light posts before 2018 Superbowl“Are we the baddies?” Aka, an existential crisis for nazis (mentioned by Inner Voice)The Science of Kindness (and oxytocin)The Neurobiology of friendshipNasal spray and oxytocin increased male cooperationThe above study debunked (in Vox)Book: Sapiens (by Yuval Noah Harari)Book: The Power of Us (by Jan Van Bavel and Dominic Packer)Paying Mentorship Forward (podcast episode for the NeuroLeadership Institute featuring Josh and Kendrick)Panel in the Vatican celebrating the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre

You ever get in a fight?  I did. Once. Wearing my Red Sox hat at Yankee Stadium. Me (and two Yankees fans) were basically high on an aggressive cocktail of brain chemicals that forced our collective hand. Stupid, pointless violence with strangers that almost cost me an eye.  This episode's fugue will describe the experience, followed by Inner Voice and I doing a post-fugue analysis. Together we'll review the ingredients of a lethal cocktail that drove me into a dangerous, seemingly unavoidable situation.  This is Part 1 of a three-part series about fate and biology, sharing the experience of situations that find us “stuck in time,” unable to avoid fate.--Credits:Written and produced by Gabriel Berezin.Original music and sound design by Grant ZubritskyOpening and closing music by Monuments (featuring Grant Zubritsky (bass), Robby Sinclair (drums) and Bryan Murray (saxophone), Gabriel Berezin (guitar)) Editorial insight by Melissa "Monty" Montan Logo design by Justin MontanFollow Fugues on Twitter and Instagram.References:Study on GABA, serotonin and dopamine and its relation to aggressive behavior(And another study)Pic of my eye post-fightSlaughterhouse Five (the novel by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.)Sneaky Spirits Social Club (website) (instagram)

Why are we so prone to bad logic? We're going to hear two everyday fugues in this episode: the search for a lost spatula and a spilled beer. The real story here is how easy it is to be irrational. Who is “we” in this episode? It's me and my inner voice obviously. Inner Voice and I will do some post-fugue analysis to find out what mental phenomena are at play while I make really bad assumptions about events in my surroundings. By the end of the episode maybe you'll appreciate why we're actually doing a lot better than we think we are as a society given how mistake-prone our brains are.--Credits: Written and produced by Gabriel BerezinOriginal music and sound design - Grant ZubritskyOpening and closing music: Monuments (featuring Grant Zubritsky (bass), Robby Sinclair (drums) and Bryan Murray (saxophone), Gabriel Berezin (guitar)) Editorial insight - Melissa "Monty" Montan Logo design - Justin MontanFind Fugues on Twitter and Instagram.References:Apophenia in the Queen's GambitApophenia in Stranger ThingsWacky Conspiracy Theory showing Back to the Future predicted 9/11 How Netflix uses big data to inform its contentThe Brain's Autopilot (Scientific American)Daniel Kahneman's System 1 vs 2 Thinking (article)Thinking Fast and Slow (book)Anil Seth's TED talkHow Much of What You See is Hallucination (TED Ex)Abracadabra! Only 20 men in NHL history have scored 60 or more goals in a single season. A sometimes forgotten member of this select club is an undersized, take-no-prisoners centre named Dennis Maruk. And it's only fitting that Dennis is our guest on episode 60 of the Pro Hockey Alumni Podcast. As a junior in the OHA, Maruk was the one of the greatest players in London Knights history, but his 5-8 height scared off NHL teams until the second round of the 1975 Draft, where he was chosen by the woebegone California Seals.  After a standout rookie season in Oakland, Maruk and his mates moved to Cleveland,  where he continued to star while the franchise floundered. After just two seasons in Ohio, the Cleveland Barons were merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978, but Maruk was dispatched to Washington after 2 just games.  It was in DC where Maruk would emerge as one of the NHL's premier centers, scoring 50 goals in 1980-81 and following that with the incredible 60-goal, 76-assist campaign in 1981-82. Maruk led the improving Caps in scoring in 1982-83, but was traded back to Minnesota and slotted as the team's 3rd line center.  Amidst reduced playing time, Maruk adjusted to his new role would become one the Stars top post-season performers in the notorious “Chuck Norris” Division in the 1980s. As chronicled in his riveting 2017 autobiography with author Ken Reid, Maruk's post playing days took him from hockey superstar to behind the wheel of a service ship in the Gulf of Mexico,  to carrying bags as a bellhop at an Aspen hotel, to setting up furniture for Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, to working as a farmhand for musician John Oates. And ultimately Maruk's life path took him to a life-and-death decision at edge of the Grand Canyon. Dennis is a great interview and you'll love his recollections of a fascinating career and life.  Among the teammates, coaches and opponents we discuss are:  Gilles Meloche, Bob "Hound" Kelly, Ryan Walter, Jean Pronovost, Kent Nilsson, Herb Brooks, Charlie Simmer, Bryan Murray and more. After our talk with Dennis, stick around for "PHA Overtime" with this week's news and notes from our Facebook pages featuring the Hartford Whalers, Boston Bruins, World Hockey Association and Pro Hockey Alumni as well as a postscript to the Maruk interview. This past week the Anaheim Ducks brought back Francois Beauchemin for his third tour of duty. He signed a one-year deal worth $1 million, including $500,000 in performance bonuses. On this show, we talk about the defensive implications of bringing him back to the organization and the possibility of other moves the Ducks might make. We also discuss the upcoming talent for the Ducks and who we think could make the team come this October. We cover the World Junior Summer Showcase, the Ducks Prospect Showcase, and the Fedorin Cup.  This podcast is dedicated to Bryan Murray for his contributions to the Anaheim Ducks and sport of hockey in general. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

At the end of the line and the 82 games are completed, the Sens improbably move on to the playoffs against the Montreal Canadians of whom the Sens match up against well. Sens 3 @ NYR 0 Sens 3 @ Flyers 1 It has been a regular season of ups and downs.  From Andrew Hammond ending the season with a 20-1-2 record, the emergence of Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman to the return of Erik Karlsson to Norris Trophy caliber and the return and retirement of Daniel Alfredsson.  This season also had some not so great moments having Bryan Murray and Mark Reeds battle with inoperable cancer, the firing of Paul Maclean and trying to recover from early season struggles. Having zero changes outside of the Jason Spezza trade, the change in approach to the team by sitting veterans like Chris Phillips and holding back on others like Chris Neil and Jared Cowen has allowed the players to be young and hungry for competing in the regular season along with continuing off to the post season.

It has been a long time since we have gotten together for a show, and again, year after year, we say goodbye to another potential legacy player move out of the organization. This time though, we don't seem as upset about Spezza moving on vs. Alfredsson last year. Is it because we got something in return? Is it that the team doesn't seem to be a contending team next season? Is it that half of the fans have always been down on Spezza? We get some familiar faces back with Michalek staying and add a bit of experience and leadership with the addition of Legwand. We were also invited to the Sens Development camp and got exclusive access to the players, including a quick chat with Curtis Lazar and Fredrik Claesson - thanks again to Chris Moore and the Ottawa Senators for the invitation. We also look at the possibilities of goal songs for the year. A little more banter about the line up and signings around the league. We encourage you to sign up to the new forums and participate and also don't forget to subscribe and rate the podcast on iTunes. Lastly, our best wishes go out to Bryan Murray and his family during this difficult time and through his treatment. See you in September!

We've switched roles as hosts, and it's been an interesting experience.   We summarize the last game of the season, the post-season press conferences of Eugene Melnyk, Bryan Murray (we didn't bother to talk about Cyril Leeder as Pan already had enough math in the show) and give our opinions about where we think the team is going, where we want it to go, and how it might turn out. Thanks to all our guests, emailers, contributors and listeners.   We'll likely be back at some point during the summer (after the draft and free agent frenzy) and then in the fall. GO SENS GO!

This week has been pretty much good news for the Sens (and for Pan's new car). Lots of points earned and re-upping Bryan Murray for a couple more years and retaining and promoting Randy Lee and Pierre Dorion to retain the brain trust of the executive.  - Sens 3 @ Avs 4 (OT)  - Sens 2 @ Preds 1  - Sens 3 @ Wild 0   Murray and Melnyk promise better results on the ice with better options. This means higher ticket prices but also much better experience at the arena and game. We read some e-mail and tweets and thanks go out to the donors. Ahead this week on AFITC – the Goalies Gone Wild Edition – we'll start with a look back at a busy week for the Toronto Maple Leafs that saw them play four games and endure their first major trade of the season. The details on those games as well as who's in, who's out and what it all means are along to kick start the Redline Report. Some injury notes follow in the Revolving Door before we conclude the segment with a look at a potential feud between Ron Wilson and Phil Kessel along with another major trade from the Nation's capital. Later in Back Checking, Listener Contributions feature some of your thoughts on the trades made by Brian Burke and Bryan Murray and two great emails from Alan and Aaron on the sudden outbreak of goonery in the NHL. The Junior Hockey Report updates you on two St. Michael's Buzzers games and the Gong Banger stops by to ring in a goon themed Troubling Fact of the Week. Rigamarole wraps the show with a look at why the mountain is likely too tall to climb for the Maple Leafs to reach the playoff summit. Alex Rodriguez was caught on camera at the Super Bowl with Cameron Diaz feeding him popcorn. While some said it was a moment of embarrassment, I say for any regular guy, being seen having Cameron Diaz feeding you popcorn would be a major accomplishment. This is Episode 6.21 of AFITC.

When one thinks of free jazz, one of the first names that springs to mind is that of Merle Haggard. And so, it's perfectly natural that saxophonist Bryan Murray would have assembled a band to play free versions of Haggard's songs. The result is the very engaging Pretend It's The End Of The World (Hot Cup, 2010). In this interview, Murray talks about the inspiration for the record and how the band made the songs work in such a different context. Learn more at www.myspace.com/bryanandthehaggards.
