Making games is multidisciplinary teamwork at its finest and coming along with different types of people is crucial. Equally important is the flexibility one can practice around their main role. This adaptability is highlighted especially when finding one's first position in a small or mid-sized studio. However, these soft skills are rarely the main topic of any university course. So how does the Jamk BIT program ensure that future game professionals graduate with sufficient teamwork skills and the ability to adapt to the changes that most game studios go through? Discussing the topic from an employer perspective is Dmytro Zhovtobryukh, CEO of Snowhound Games and from an educator perspective, Risto Koskenkorva, Senior Lecturer of the Jamk Business Information Technology program. Landing a job in the game industry is often much more than completing a formal degree and sending around CVs. For the most part of its entire existence, the game industry has lacked formal education, such as university degrees, that would prepare the work force directly to the needs of the industry. Instead finding one's way to games has always been more or less about pursuing individual passion and creating one's own path. Acknowledging this legacy, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (Jamk) and Expa Game Business Cooperative are working closely together to make networking and various work life lessons an integral part of the Jamk's international game oriented Business Information Technology education program. In this episode Expa's chairperson Wanda O Rly (Valtteri Lahti) and Jamk's BIT practical training director Kalle Raijonkari discuss together with Mika Tammenkoski, the co-founder and CEO of Metacore - Finland's fastest growing game company, about game industry employment in the 2020s, the role of education and the importance of networking. Tinia Pina is my guest on Episode 135 of Inside Ideas with Marc Buckley. Tinia received her B.S. in Business Information Technology from Virginia Tech and studied briefly at Columbia University's Earth Institute. She has seven years of experience in the financial services industry and ten years as a professional in the sustainability industry. Her experiences related to food waste, food systems and sustainability have fueled her passion to increase our communities' resilience, prosperity, and knowledge to help us live more conscious lives. Tinia's pioneering business model has earned her a Huffington Post Millennial Impact Grant, the American Express Emerging Innovator award and a MillerCoors Urban Entrepreneur grant, among other honors. After studying Environmental Conservation and Sustainability at Columbia University's Earth Institute and volunteering at various community urban farms, Tinia launched Re-Nuble with a mission to “Redefine Waste” within urban communities. Re-Nuble quickly evolved into a social enterprise dedicated to changing wasteful habits around the world. Tinia is a SWANA Certified Composting Systems Technical Associate and her experiences related to food waste, systems and policy have fueled her passion to increase our communities' resilience, prosperity, and knowledge to help us live more conscious lives. Re-Nuble Founded December 2011 While volunteering as an SAT-prep teacher in 2012 in New York City, Founder Tinia Pina saw firsthand how limited healthy food options impacted her students' productivity, affecting their future. Pulled towards the mission of improving local food production, she created the company, Re-Nuble. Tinia felt there was a unique opportunity to use New York City's food stream to catalyze more sustainable growing near urban areas, especially as people continue to become more interested in eating less chemically-laden food. Tinia began to spend a lot of time thinking, why is this? Why is it that there's more affordable chemically-laden and processed food available than chemical- free and healthier options. After doing extensive research, Tinia realized that it's because our food system is incredibly inefficient. A pound of organic- certified tomatoes is often sold at a price that's 43% higher than chemically produced (conventionally grown) tomatoes because it's easier and cheaper for growers to produce. With the alarming adversities our society is facing with food and water scarcity and with 70% of global population estimated to live in and near cities by 2050, she knew that we had to be more smart and efficient with our natural resources and overall production of healthy, good food. https://www.re-nuble.com/

Kagonya Awori proposes a lens for game design that is based on indigenous African ways of knowing. Based on a study with elders in Kenya and diaspora youth in Australia, this talk proposes a lens that can motivate the design of games that can better mediate learning for African communities. The People-Place-Praxis lens is based on the view that knowledge is developed, shared and stored over time through situated face-to-face interactions with people and indigenous epicentres. The P-P-P lens views People as knowledge, Place as knowledge and Praxis as knowledge. This triad view of knowledge asserts that immersive learning involves supporting social, situated and physical interactions among members, and in close association with indigenous epicentres. DR. He talks about his journey in property and why he believes if you know how to make your own money you will never be poor. As someone who has a passion for doing deals, this is a great opportunity to hear about what and how he has found the strategy that works for him and how you can get on the property ladder if you really want to.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding your own path is vital. Today when you buy a property to convert it you have to go down the bridging route. There are more products in the market but they are now very specific. If you want to use it as an HMO you have to have a commercial mortgage. I help people to get on the property ladder and to find the strategy that works and is the best for them. If you know how to make money you will never be poor. I know that if I don't have enough money I just need to implement more. I've never seen a job as making me financially secure. You are making yourself more valuable if you have the right skills and knowledge. I'm deal centric, it's all about the right deal and my passion is doing the deals. If you want something you need to find out how you can get it. If your community is entrepreneurial then it fosters the entrepreneurial spirit in everyone. You need to have a five-year plan and work backwards to work out how you can achieve it. If you can survive the first years in business it's likely you will go on to be successful. It's important to look at others who are successful in your arena. Network with people and find out what resonates with you. What you start with may not be what you continue with. Business is not easy but if you do something you enjoy and are passionate about its likely you will be successful.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I love joint venturing and work with people who are entering the market' ‘I feel that if you know how to make money you will never be poor' ‘This is a time for personal development and positioning yourself for the opportunities'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series       ABOUT THE GUEST Motiul Islam   Motiul started his property journey at the age of 19 when he was still at university in London studying BA Economics and BSC in Business Information Technology. Before this, he was always thinking outside the box and investing in other areas. He then turned to property. Whilst his peers were in lectures, Motiul was stepping out of the lecture theatre to negotiate deals. He learned some crucial lessons early on when he was ‘gazumped' in each of his first 3 property deals. However, he did not let this stop him and by the age of 23, Motiul had bought his first property investment. He continued to buy subsequent properties one after another, employing no money down strategies before they were even taught and adding value to properties through a combination of extending, developing and carrying out title splits.    After achieving his financial and property goals within a year of setting them, well ahead of the short timeframe he had set himself, Motiul was able to retire from property altogether. However, being young and having a big interest in the property field, he returned to property for two reasons. Firstly, he has a passion for property, ‘finding deals, doing deals and structuring deals'. Secondly, he has a vision to help others get started on the property ladder, but with his extensive experience, his expertise also benefits those who have already started and are established in the property arena.   Motiul's areas of expertise are primarily HMOs and structuring deals but he also has years of experience in rent to rent, title splits, no money down, refurbishments and developments, with current ongoing refurbishments and developments in commercial properties as well as joint ventures and mentoring peers in various strategies.   ABOUT THE HOST Alex is a prize-winning chartered accountant with experience in financial markets from trading finance, capital hedging, structural foreign exchange and interest rates to operational risk from the world's top financial and advisory institutions including Deloitte, RBS and JPMorgan Chase Alex has been involved in property development programmes across different types since 2008, building and managing a portfolio that includes standard buy-to-lets, student accommodation and other houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs). I am your host, Bethany Solomon, associate editor of the Northeast Campus at the TCC connection. Since this series is about upcoming courses, we thought it would be best to the interview instructors tasked with teaching them. Today we have a special guest, our very own faculty advisor, Jerry Goodwin. How are you Jerry Goodwin?   Jerry Goodwin: I’m doing great Ms. Solomon, how are you?   I’m good. Thank you for joining us today.   Thank you for the invitation.   We’re going to be learning a bit about your background, your history in one of Tulsa’s most historic communities, how you came to be involved in your field, TCC, and the classes and programs you are involved in this coming fall. Let’s start with your background and earlier years in education that lead up to your professional pursuits and accomplishments.   I started in 2000, teaching as an adjunct at TCC. I had a partner teaching at TCC as an adjunct and recommended I consider applying or at least working at TCC and I did. I served as an adjunct for seven years and then an opportunity presented itself for me to apply for a full-time position. Others reached out to me and let me know that this full-time position was available to teach in the journalism field. In 2007, I applied to serve as an assistant professor in journalism and mass communications. If you take into consideration my adjunct years, next year, that would have been two decades. Prior to that I was working for my family’s business, the OK eagle newspaper, and I was with them for 15 years professionally. That was the foundation that lead me to pursuing what turned out to be a career in journalism and communications.   Okay. Good, so without that foundation do you believe you would have studied mass communications or journalism at all?   Perhaps not, I had aspired to go into law and have been involved with politics, and so it was blessing and what better opportunity to work in a field, and from those experience in the field, then go and teach the next generation of young people what you have learned. It was natural and it’s a blessing and I could not be any more pleased and excited with this trajectory and course I am on.   So you enjoy politics and just ran for city council. Can you tell us a little about your experience?   Yes I was not new to politics, fortunately in my early years, worked for a congress man so I truly appreciate the value of public service. That experience was eye opening in more ways than one. What I enjoyed the most about that experience is meeting and becoming acquainted with the individuals of the community. I did a lot of door to door knocking and ended up falling short of a three-person race and came in second. When we combined my results and the results of the person that came in third the outcome was 55% of the winner and 45% to the remaining two candidates. It had been determined the candidate, or at least the city counsel is vulnerable, so I am looking at here in the near future rerunning and just trying to put together the recipe of victory, what I can learn from this previous experience, and how I can use that to my benefit so that I will be more successful this next go around.   What can you tell us about The Connection and you leading as the faculty advisor? What experience has helped you see communication differently or understand how to lead students to what they eventually want to pursue?   Very good! What I did when I worked for my family’s newspaper. When I started working with them at a full-time capacity and graded by other newspapers in the state, we were ranked as number 13. Just recognition and awards and things of that nature.  By the time I left we were ranked number 3 in comparison to awards received in recognition. I brought that experience to the TCC connection, where I would like to see each and every one of you as members of the staff, leave with some degree of recognition and value from this experience because I believe it adds so much more to your resume, and your level of confidence whether you pursue a career in journalism or any other career. When you demonstrate excellence, it prepares you for greater opportunities in the future, so it has always been my mission and my commitment to make sure each one of you, as members of the newspapers staff receive as much as you can get out of it. If you can get recognition with your peers, state, and region I have done my job.   So, for your current lineup of courses, what do you have planned for the fall semester?   For the fall semester I will be teaching Intro to Business, Public Speaking, Broadcasting, and of course the TCC Connection Honors course. I am probably one of the few professors here at the college that teaches in three different divisions. I am in the Business & Information Technology school, Liberal Arts, and I am also in the Performing and Visual Arts department, that now is where the journalism program is housed. So I feel very fortunate to be able to teach across a variety of discipline. Hopefully that experience and that knowledge, I can share with each of you in my classrooms in any of those areas.   That is interesting. Since you are teaching in three different divisions, did you find that they integrate in any way?   Absolutely. The most important in all three is interacting and engaging and then understand to the best of my ability while putting myself where the students are. Having non-traditional students, in addition to traditional students, I just try to go as far as I can to where the students are so I can relate to each and every one of them. What I find so fascinating is that, and you can appreciate this, when I come into a classroom and ask them what they saw on TV last night, what they listened to on the radio, what they read in the newspaper, the chances are slim to none that any of them could understand what I am saying. I always must talk to them in terms of what I think is trending and what is in their newsfeed. I find it fascinating that I must make the modifications to what I have traditionally and customarily have been used to. So now when I come in and talk about what I saw in the evening news I will be talking to myself, because the chances are very good that no one will be able to identify. [both laugh…] At least if I could say I saw it on a feed somewhere, it would increase the likelihood that they will understand what I am saying, and I won’t be just a man on an island by myself. So, it has been interesting to make that transition from the traditional forms of media to where each one of you are getting your information. I make sure I am relevant and pertinent to our discussion and I am not just out here and by myself trying to communicate with you.   What do you believe is a pro and con of mass communications today, and media in general, compared to the way you grew up and what you have learned?   Traditions individuals were taught to either be in the print discipline, tv broadcast discipline, or radio discipline. Right now, those going into the field of communication are being called upon to be an expert in all those different fields. They developed this new concept called backpack journalism whereby on the spot, you can interview someone, record an event, and type a story to appear online. You can basically do all of that in one setting. Before you have designated people to write print articles, specific people for television, and specified people for radio, but now we must develop the next generation going into communication that each one of you going into every scenario can do it all. For those pursuing careers journalism, you need to be as multi-dimensional and multi-qualified to experience. You need to demonstrate a level of competency on a variety of different platforms and cannot think if I go down this track exclusively or that track exclusively, I’m going to be good. No, you must be, as best as possible, qualified in multiple platforms for the times to come.   Since you teach three different divisions it looks like you have put that practice in your own life so in a way, you can relate with your students and be an example for them. As far as your information what are the best ways students can reach you. Email? Office hours?   Email, office hours, bat signal, just whatever way that they can, wait, I wasn’t supposed to tell them I was Bruce Wayne Jr.? [both laugh…] But if they can’t give me bat signal, they can reach me by way of email, or my office number (918) 595-7086. I spend quite a bit of time in the TCC Connection office, more than I spend in my own office, for a variety of reasons. The TCC Connection office is another way to reach me.   Alright, that’s great. Well, we thank you for your time Mr. Goodwin! This has been Jerry Goodwin and Bethany Solomon at the TCC Connection. Fertilizer from Food Waste   Tinia Pina is making fertilizer from food waste. How cool is that? During our interview, we learn that Tinia was volunteering in an inner city school located in what we call a food desert - an area where access to fresh food is either non existing or not affordable to the population.   She was helping students study for an examination and noticed that most had donuts for breakfast. While they started out the day with lots of energy, after a few hours, the students were unable to concentrate while she, fueled with a healthy breakfast, had no problem to keep going.   She also noticed that New York was producing huge amounts of food waste which had to be transported far to be disposed of. These were some of the experiences which gave Tina the idea to produce fertilizer from food waste and ideally help to grow fresh produce right in the areas where none was available.   Tinia Pina's Bio:   Tinia received her B.S. in Business Information Technology from Virginia Tech and has six years of experience in the financial services industry and five years as a business development professional in the sustainability industry.  Her experiences related to advocacy and community building through food waste management, food systems and sustainability have fueled her passion to increase our communities' resilience, prosperity, and knowledge to help us live more conscious lives.
