EDINBURG, TEXAS - A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Business Analytics has just started at UT-Rio Grande Valley and it is the first of its kind in the region. To learn more about the degree program, the Rio Grande Guardian secured an in-depth interview with both Giorgio Gotti, Ph.D., dean of the Robert C. Vackar College of Business & Entrepreneurship, and Jerald Hughes, Ph. D., associate dean for undergraduate studies and an associate professor at the Vackar College. Gotti said the program is designed to provide students with essential skills to develop strategic business insights and enhance decision-making processes across different industries. “Offering an approved BBA. in Business Analytics reflects positively on the university's reputation and academic standing,” Gotti said. “A specialized program can attract students interested in data science and analytics who otherwise would go elsewhere.” Gotti said the degree aligns with industry needs, enhancing the region's workforce and fostering regional economic growth. “Graduates contribute to the local workforce, potentially attracting businesses seeking data-driven professionals to drive innovation and economic growth in the region,” Gotti said. “This approval from the THECB ensures that the curriculum aligns with industry demands and fosters collaboration with businesses.” Hughes agreed. In the interview, Hughes said he expects the program to have a big impact on the Valley economy. Hughes pointed out that the new degree program was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, an organization that serves to develop and implement innovative higher education services throughout the state of Texas. Hughes said THECB approval ensures the program meets rigorous academic standards, enhancing education quality, credibility and employability for UTRGV students. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which was cited in the UTRGV program proposal, job growth in a variety of fields is projected to be significant by 2031, including: • 108,400 new management analyst jobs. • 24,200 new operations research analyst jobs. • 40,500 new data scientist jobs. Hughes said the projected growth – which indicates an increase from 11 percent to 36 percent in business analytics positions – motivated the university to develop the degree program. Hughes said the BBA undergraduate program complements current degrees offered within the Vackar college and utilizes current coursework with the addition of three new courses. He said the new curriculum empowers students with the ability to extract valuable insights from vast datasets to drive strategic decision-making, and covers: • Statistical analysis. • Descriptive analytics. • Business intelligence. • Data mining. • Machine learning. • And predictive modeling. Program graduates will be prepared to enter a field of business analytics, or to continue their education in the field, Hughes added.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Making games is multidisciplinary teamwork at its finest and coming along with different types of people is crucial. Equally important is the flexibility one can practice around their main role. This adaptability is highlighted especially when finding one's first position in a small or mid-sized studio. However, these soft skills are rarely the main topic of any university course. So how does the Jamk BIT program ensure that future game professionals graduate with sufficient teamwork skills and the ability to adapt to the changes that most game studios go through? Discussing the topic from an employer perspective is Dmytro Zhovtobryukh, CEO of Snowhound Games and from an educator perspective, Risto Koskenkorva, Senior Lecturer of the Jamk Business Information Technology program. The discussion is hosted by Wanda O Rly (Valtteri Lahti), Chairperson of Expa Game Business Cooperative. Landing a job in the game industry is often much more than completing a formal degree and sending around CVs. For the most part of its entire existence, the game industry has lacked formal education, such as university degrees, that would prepare the work force directly to the needs of the industry. Instead finding one's way to games has always been more or less about pursuing individual passion and creating one's own path. Acknowledging this legacy, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (Jamk) and Expa Game Business Cooperative are working closely together to make networking and various work life lessons an integral part of the Jamk's international game oriented Business Information Technology education program. In this episode Expa's chairperson Wanda O Rly (Valtteri Lahti) and Jamk's BIT practical training director Kalle Raijonkari discuss together with Mika Tammenkoski, the co-founder and CEO of Metacore - Finland's fastest growing game company, about game industry employment in the 2020s, the role of education and the importance of networking. Join Karaleigh in an interview with the unconventionally brave Kristina Driscoll. In this episode we talk about living an unconventional life, how no doesn't mean no forever, what it means to strive for balance, and how we can have the courage to show up messy. Kristina Driscoll trained for a career in finance, working over ten years in pension consulting and as a financial advisor. She graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). Kristina's husband was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's when their son was five years old. She was the caregiver to her husband and young son for 12 years. She continued to manage their investments throughout her husband's journey. Kristina is also on the board of directors for the animal rescue group Sanctuary One. In 2015 she built a cottage for FIV-positive cats and continues to fully fund the cottage each year. Kristina has a podcast called “She's Brave” on Apple and Spotify. She helps women find their path to becoming brave, resilient, and authentic. Favorite takeaways: 1. We feel unsettled and we don't know why. And I think the reason why we feel unsettled is because we know deep down that we're meant for more. 2. No doesn't mean no forever. It means no right now, who knows about tomorrow or next week or next year. People have stuff going on. Don't take it personally. 3. It's not that you don't ever get knocked down, because we get knocked down a lot or we fall or it feels like the end of the world over and over and over again. It's how many times you get back up. You just keep getting back up. It's not that you don't crumble, it's that you pull yourself back together over and over and over again. 4. We need all the voices, we need all the stories. We need women to speak up. That's what our world needs more of. We need more examples of resilience and bravery. 5. Action provides clarity. Even the tiniest of actions will lead to another action and another action and then all of that leads to clarity. You don't have to have gigantic goals. Sometimes just making a smaller more achievable goal- when you actually can achieve it, that builds the courage muscle and the confidence. 6. We're always trying to give our best, but my motto has become done is better than perfect. Just start somewhere and put yourself out there and build from there. And even if it's bad, that's ok. You have permission to do it badly. 7. We're not really free until we can be authentic to ourselves. If you make a decision because you think other people will approve of it, instead of making a decision that's right for you, you're not even free. You're not even free. This leads to more jobs and income generation benefiting more people and in turn, increased purchasing power and improved qualities of life. The vision: Economic transformation where SMEs in Africa and Latin America can scale sustainably and create well-paid jobs. What they do:Structured blended financeAccess to capital and technical assistance are two of the biggest barriers to businesses getting off the ground. We're willing to take the risk and invest in these impactful SMEs. We do this by offering SMEs with investments that may have lower returns and/or higher risks through measures like technical assistance grants, first loss guarantees, returnable pre-investment stage grants, concessional loans, and/or scaling capital. All of this is done with the expectation that these investments will be truly catalytic and more likely to bring strong social and environmental rewards.GLIC field buildingWe believe gender and climate issues can't be addressed on an ad-hoc basis. Rather, these complex challenges require an intentional approach, which brings explicit gender and climate solutions into all investment decisions. Over recent years, gender lens investing has gained traction, although as global temperatures rise, the demand for climate investing will only continue to increase. That's how we came to coining a new term: GLIC—Gender Lens Investing for Climate. ----------------------------------------Sign up here for updates on impactinvestor.ioThanks to all the Causeartist Partners - Check them out here.Subscribe to our Causeartist newsletter here.
Kristina Driscoll is an inspiring mother, wife, caregiver, podcaster, and Board of Directors member of Sanctuary One, an animal rescue organization in Oregon. She launched her podcast She's Brave in 2023 and helps women find their path to become brave, resilient, and live their most authentic lives. "If I can do it, you can do it too. I always had faith that God was going to take care of my son, too, and that he was going to be okay. And he is now. He just graduated from high school. He's doing a gap year. He's doing some travel, some work. He's enrolled at Colorado College for the fall. He's accomplished so much.” Kristina and her husband, 24 years her senior, met on a hike, instantly connecting. After six months of dating, they married and soon had a son. Life was wonderful. Years later, Kristina noticed her husband repeating himself and forgetting things. After denial, Kristina and her family managed the diagnosis of Alzheimer's as best as possible. Kristina jumped in and took on managing every aspect of their lives while her son and she became caregivers to her husband. Her husband's disease progressed and after 7 years of caring for him at home, Kristina made the difficult but courageous decision to move him to a facility to fully meet his ever increasing needs. Kristina's father spoke with her son sharing, “Although your father isn't really around, you'll be just fine.” They both would! In time, after her husband's passing, Kristina would go on to find love again; and start her podcast with the goal of inspiring others by her brave journey. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How Kristina coped with her husband's Alzheimer's diagnosis, managing the household and finances while caregiving for both her husband and young son. 2. How Kristina found her authentic self by embracing her journey. 3. Why Kristina firmly believes that “Community is Everything!” 4. How Kristina found her new normal, accepting what she could and could not change to find happiness. ———————————————— Learn More About Kristina Driscoll Kristina Driscoll trained for a career in finance, working over 10 years in pension consulting and as. a financial advisor.
