Former Olympic sprinter Patrick Johnson has joined Sport Integrity Australia as a Culture and Safety Advisor to ensure our responses are appropriate and informed. In this edition of On Side, Patrick talks about his role in helping to develop an agency and a sporting landscape that is culturally capable, respectful and engaging. “I think there's a shift to understanding sport as a vehicle for health, for education, to awareness, but also know what it means around reconciliation,” he says. “And I think that there's a sense of the next nine years until Brisbane 2032 that we want to ensure that all Australians are part of the Olympic Games and part of sport and that's probably a bigger picture that we've looked at.” He says the shift is even more important with the 2032 Olympics on the horizon. “You can see the shift around real respect, real acknowledgment and real understanding. There has to be a pathway regardless of where you live in this country. If you want to be a great sports person then let's make sure you have the opportunity ... It should be not just for the rich, it should be for every single person in this country to aspire, believe and could be part of.” He says the great thing about many athletes is that they are driving the change themselves because they see Australia and sport as diverse and multicultural. “But how do we ensure that it's for everyone? And I think the great thing that we've got in Australia, there's a real movement within athletes in this country that are really the game changers.” Best known for being the only Australian man to smash the 10-second barrier for the 100m, Patrick also discusses his career path, the importance of language, the role of the media, and his hopes for the future of sport. We also talk to former Australian Diamond captain and world champion Caitlin Bassett who, too, has recently taken up a role at Sport Integrity Australia as an Athlete Educator. Education has come a long way since she began her career, she says. “The information that I was getting at the start of my career and the information I was getting at the end was vastly different,” she says. “I was always learning every time we came together to do an education session, whether it being around drugs and sport, whether it be around integrity issues, around wagering and betting in sport and things like that, it was always something new and something learning because sport was evolving at such a rapid rate.” For many years the poster girl for Australian netball, she says the profile also came at a price, particularly when social media came along. “By opening up your life and sharing your life to them “[fans] is a great way, I guess, to bring them along on the ride with you,” she says, “but you are also opening yourself up to the negative side and that is obviously abuse and some of the unkind comments that come along with it.” Those comments were not only from “fans” ready to critique her performance, but from disgruntled gamblers, she says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why has the Australian Netball team captain Caitlin Bassett left her club? Ryan Daniels has your answer here.
The Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic have confirmed Australian Diamonds star Caitlin Bassett will join their roster for the 2021 ANZ Premiership season.Bassett, who has won two Netball World Cups and a Commonwealth Games gold medal, will be the first Australian Diamond to compete in the ANZ Premiership with the 1.96m shooter recently named in the national squad by new Diamonds head coach Stacey Marinkovich.Bassett will combine with New Zealand-born Chiara Semple and rising young talent Khiarna Williams in the confirmed Magic shooting end.She told Newstalk ZB's Elliott Smith she was excited about the prospect of playing in New Zealand."A great new experience, opportunities for more adventure, an opportunity to play in a different country, something I never thought would happen for me through my career."And I'm excited to get over there and join the Magic," Bassett said."It's nice to finally have everything revealed, I'm not good at keeping secrets, there has been a lot of back and forth the last couple of weeks, making sure I'm still eligible to play for Australia, these are complications which have obviously popped up due to Covid so I'm super grateful for being so patient and Netball Australia for supporting me and giving me the backing to come and play."Bassett denied Australian netball's contentious move to the Super Shot format contributed to her decision. In June, Australia Super Netball announced it had adopted the two-point shot that would be used in Super Netball - despite strong opposition to it.As a result Bassett, whose accuracy from under the post - rather than from a greater distance away - has had limited game time this season."The best teams in our competition have rarely used the two-point shot, I think it's more the way our team have implemented the rule change and what they've done has made me a little void but I'm more than happy to pull off a long shot," Bassett said."It's just at the end of the day the coach didn't see me in their starting seven, which was frustrating considering all the work that I was doing. I just want to be out there playing on court."Magic head coach Amigene Metcalfe was thrilled about the opportunity to work with Bassett."The entire team is really excited to have Caitlin join the Magic family. She brings a lot of experience and knowledge of the game which will be extremely beneficial."Our wider netball community will also have the opportunity to see a superstar in action which will bring huge value to our sport."Magic chief executive Rohan West said they were delighted to have secured one of the world's best shooters."Caitlin is a huge signing for the Magic and we're excited by everything she'll add to our shooting circle," he said"As a club, we can see that the wealth of experience that Caitlin brings will benefit our young shooters coming through with the opportunity to learn from one of the best."The Magic have been granted an exemption from the ANZ Premiership to field two ineligble players, with 24-year-old Semple having represented England's U21 team at the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana.

The Silver Ferns will meet a familiar rival on the biggest stage in netball in the early hours of Monday morning, as they take on the Australian Diamonds in the World Cup final. Here's all you need to know ahead of the match.Netball World Cup Grand Final:Silver Ferns v Australian Diamonds 3:45am NZTHow to watch:The Herald will be live blogging the grand final from 3:30am followed by all the post-match coverage. Sky TV will be broadcasting the World Cup final live on Sky Sport 3 from 3.20am while the match will also be screened live on Prime.Head-to-head:This year is the sixth successive time that New Zealand and Australia will play in the Netball World Cup final.Australia are coming off three back-to-back titles and will be eager to make it four after missing out on Commonwealth Games gold in the Gold Coast last April. The Silver Ferns have won 51 of the total 147 matches played against Australia, giving them a 35 per cent win rate historically. However, on the sharp end of what's been a year-long rebuild for the Ferns, their chances stand strong.Silver FernsShooters: Maria Folau, Te Paea Selby-Rickit, Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Bailey Mes.Midcourters: Laura Langman, Gina Crampton, Karin Burger and Shannon Saunders.Defenders: Jane Watson, Katrina Rore, Casey Kopua and Phoenix Karaka.Head coach: Noeline TauruaNoeline Taurua coach of New Zealand. Photo / GettyAustralian DiamondsShooters:Caitlin Basset, Steph Wood, Caitlin Thwaites and Gretel Tippett.Midcourters:Liz Watson, Jamie-Lee Price, Paige Hadley and Kelsey Browne.Defenders:Jo Weston, Courtney Bruce, April Brandley and Sarah Klau.Head coach: Lisa AlexanderJourney to the grand final:The Silver Ferns dominated their opening pool games of the Netball World Cup with big wins over Malawi, Barbados, Singapore, Zimbabwe and Northern Ireland.Their first defeat came against Australia (49-50) on Thursday night before progressing into the semi-finals as the second-ranked team from group F.Australia went on to play second-ranked group E team, South Africa, while the Silver ferns faced off against top-ranked the England Roses.Claiming a do-or-die 47-45 win over England on Sunday morning NZT secured the Ferns a spot in the final against Australia. Can the Silver Ferns actually win the World Cup?If the Ferns play with the same style, pace and tenacity as they did against England, yes they certainly have a good chance of lifting the trophy. The Ferns' one-goal loss to the Diamonds in pool play on Thursday night should give them plenty of confidence too that they can foot it with the Aussies.Taurua will be more prepared in terms of knowing when and where to make positional changes with the side's combinations now well and truly settled.Australia rested star players including captain Caitlin Bassett for their 55-53 win over South Africa in the semis which could be seen as a tactical move having earned the 'easier' route to the grand final. However, the thrilling win over England would have boosted the Ferns' confidence and should see them fired up ready to take out the World Cup.
Part 2 of my discussion with Caitlin Bassett, a fellow philosopher, and deep thinker. In this episode, we focus on the topic of poitics and government.

This episode I'm speaking with Hugh Van Cuylenburg from The Resilience Project. The name might not be familiar to you but he has had a huge impact on some of the most famous names in Australia. From Australian cricketer Steve Smith, to Brownlow medallist Dusty Martin to Australian netball captain, Caitlin Bassett. I'm also excited for this episode because Hugh has actually had an impact on my life too. The origins of The Resilience Project begun when Hugh was volunteering in India after a cricket tour over there. He volunteered at a school for a couple of weeks that didn't even have running water, but he noticed that the people were the happiest that he ever met despite having relatively little. Unknowingly this would lead him onto a journey to find out where real happiness comes from. What did he find out? They practice gratitude, empathy and mindfulness every day; Gratitude: The ability to pay attention to what you've got, not what you don't have. It's not waiting to be happy when you have the next best thing (be it some new shoes, or a new car). Empathy: The ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes. The more empathetic you are, the more likely you are to do something kind. Hugh says the older we get the more we actually move away from looking out for others. Mindfulness: Can be a buzzword in society these days but mindfulness is the ability to be calm and present. Often it's sitting still, and potentially using an app like Headspace, Calm, Buddhify or The Resilience Project's app to help calm your body. After India, Hugh went onto do a Masters to look into where happiness comes from. He started doing presentations for free at schools about what he learnt and the ripples of Hugh's message started to spread. It has spread to schools, businesses and professional sporting teams all over Australia. It has grown so much that as of mid January 2019 he is already booked up for the whole of the year. If you would like to book Hugh to come speak at your school, workplace or sporting club then unfortunately you'll have to book in 2020. However, you can still buy tickets to some of his larger events throughout the year. Welcome to 2019 and welcome to two Splinters debutants… in fact, the ONLY members of The Bench who haven’t graced the stage of Splinters as yet! Dom Rizzuto and Jake Aquilina saddle up for the opening episode of Splinters in 2019 and, to get away from the grumpiness of the Sultan and Lord Mayor, they look back on the champions, winners and legends of 2018.Whether you’re an NHL, NFL, NRL, WNRL, tennis, cricket, netball, soccer or Olympic fan, or an up and coming sportscaster yourself, Chorizo and Aqua have you covered with their list of winners. It did take some time to get Dom to shut up about Roma, but the boys did eventually get around to discussing Sam Kerr, Damien Cook, Isabelle Kelly, Scotty James, Ellyse Perry, Caitlin Bassett, Alex Diminaur and a host of events and teams. So, if you’re nursing a New Year’s Day hangover, or even if you’re not, make sure you kick back, relax and toast the best of 2018!

LISTEN TO JENNY WOODS TALK WITH RADIO SPORT BREAKFAST ABOVEIt's the moment Kiwi netball fans have been waiting for.The Silver Ferns finally put an end to their near-historic nine-game losing streak against the Australian Diamonds to claim their first win 55-44 in the 2018 Constellation Cup at Hamilton's Claudelands Arena. After showing patches of promise throughout the first two tests in Australia, losing 57-42 in Brisbane and 56-47 in Townsville, the Ferns finally proved they know how to win – and how to win well.Silver Ferns captain Laura Langman said it was very special to claim the win on home ground."It's really nice to be fair and I think there's no place like home to do it," Langman said after the clash, "Ultimately for us, it just reinforced that what we're doing, we're on the right track.""We knew it was there and we just had to be patient … for me the win is really a reinforcement that our processes, when we get them right [and] when we have the discipline and the patience to stick to them, the scoreboard takes care of itself."Silver Ferns head coach Noeline Taurua was pleased to add a win against Australia to her short record in charge of the national side but was hesitant to get too excited, urging that there were still plenty of areas to address."From my end, I can just see the gaps, I know that sounds terrible, but I can see room for improvement," Taurua said."It's within our grasp to not only win the [final] but also the cup as well so I'm absolutely rapt that we're still in the game but we've got to be able to put it into action."Great improvements from where we were and it's great to get the [win] on the board … [but] time will tell whether we can back ourselves up."Taking a narrow one-goal lead after the first quarter, the Ferns took control with Maria Folau and Te Paea Selby-Rickit's shooting efforts. In a bid to settle her side, Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander called Caitlin Bassett on at goal shoot after starting her on the bench, but even the Australian captain couldn't stop the Ferns' fast pace with an uncharacteristically average shooting performance.Meanwhile, Folau and Selby-Rickit played on with a 100 per cent shooting rate in the second quarter aided by a forceful Ferns midcourt featuring stellar efforts by Gina Crampton and Samantha Sinclair.Ferns defender and player of the match Jane Watson was in sublime form picking up vital rebounds and intercepts. And, unlike in the past few games, the Ferns treasured possession - capitalising from almost every opportunity they were given to stun their opponents and put the World Champions in unfamiliar territory.Pulling ahead to their biggest lead in the series so far, the Ferns made sure they kept the pressure on their rivals right until the final moments to steal the show and finally deliver a passionate home crowd that winning feeling. The decisive win restores hope that the Silver Ferns could claim the annual Constellation Cup for the first time since 2012 but need at least a massive 14-goal win on Thursday night in Wellington to pull it off.
LISTEN TO MARG FOSTER DISCUSS THE PERFORMANCE WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVESilver Ferns defenders could be on the chopping block as coach Noeline Taurua looks to change things up ahead of next month's Constellation Cup.Concluding their first international campaign since the Commonwealth Games with a 5-goal loss to the Australian Diamonds yesterday, the Ferns looked to be in promising form with evident improvements across the court. However, one win from three games wasn't good enough for Taurua.Earlier today she said the Series closer had exposed the Ferns' lack of fight on the court as she urged her side to toughen up before facing the Diamonds again next month.Taurua suggested that the new-look side could be switched up again, with the possibility of calling up players from the wider squad not used in the Quad Series, and potentially from the New Zealand A squad, ahead of the team naming next week."There were areas where we were exposed and probably never had enough firepower to look at changing up ... so we need to look at what we have at home," Taurua said after the Ferns went down 60-55 to Australia."I don't know if I'd call it experimenting, I would like to think I'm going to be quite strategic in what I need to do ... we'll look at some of the others that are at home and the level underneath."Particularly concerned with her defensive unit's performance, Taurua said it was evident the squad needed an injection of height and speed in the circle in order to combat the tenacious nature of Australian shooters Caitlin Bassett and Gretel Tippett.Bassett dominated the shooting circle with her 1.93m frame towering over the 1.87m Katrina Grant and 1.81m Jane Watson.Meanwhile, Tippett, who isn't far off her skipper standing at 1.91m, caught the Ferns off guard when she pulled out her dangerously accurate basketball-inspired layup shot to soar over the Kiwi defenders with relative ease."When we got caught one-on-one, especially in the circle, we were exposed because of height deficit," she said."Defensively there were moments where we scrapped and we fought really hard but I also didn't think we had purpose in some respect."We need more in regard to our in circle defence, maybe a bit of height, maybe a bit of presence in there, but also people who are quite fast … I'm going to look at all areas and see how we can be better."The tallest current Silver Ferns defender, Kelly Jury, stands at 1.92m but has been ruled out of the 2018 international season after dislocating her shoulder in the ANZ Premiership. However, Casey Kopua, who has been recovering from a plantar fascia tear, could be available for the Constellation Cup.Although not bringing significantly more height to the shooting circle, the seasoned-veteran would add valuable experience to the Ferns' side.Taurua will have just over a week to make her decisions with the Ferns' second training camp set to tip off next Tuesday in Auckland. The Silver Ferns will play their first Constellation Cup match on October 7 in Brisbane.

Sydney Roosters legend Anthony Minichiello saw the end of his playing career coming, and planned accordingly. Many of his footy mates didn't, with tragic results. Anthony says the come down from the highs of a sports star life can be hard. Many athletes struggle to find a new purpose, and structure, for their new life. It was different for 'Mini' who was raised by hard working Italian parents who made him get a trade in the early years of his NRL career. He maintained a life of balance, which extended beyond his world of sport. Anthony went on to captain the Roosters and holds the record for most games and most tries at the club. He's decorated as they come - a NSW State of Origin representative, Australia and Italy representative, and winner of the Golden Boot Award for International Player of the Year in 2005. Anthony's career coincided with a big shift in the commercialisation of sport. He talks about the evolution from his first contract worth $10,000 and drinking plenty of beer after every match, to the professional game it is today. Anthony also shares lessons learned from his humble upbringing, how he built a broad network and interests outside of rugby league and the challenge of growing the game nationally. Mini was in Adelaide to promote the Roosters' clash with the Storm at Adelaide Oval on June 24, and was able to squeeze in our interview between promotional duties. Australian Diamonds netball star Caitlin Bassett has recently moved from Perth to join the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia's newly formed national netball league. It was a big decision for a girl who was born and raised in Western Australia and became a household name at West Coast Fever, Caitlin says calling her coach to say she was leaving was one of the toughest conversations she's ever had to have. She hopes the new league and developments in the sport will be another step forward in the professionalism of netball, where even the top players, including Caitlin, are part-timers.
