For the past several months, Kathleen Ganley, Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, Sarah Hoffman and Naheed Nenshi have been battling it out to see who will replace Rachel Notley as leader of Alberta's NDP. Each leadership candidate faced an entrance fee of $60,000 and a spending limit of $500,000. Initially, David Shepherd registered his candidacy early, but did not pursue it further. Rakhi Pancholi also announced her candidacy early, but withdrew from the leadership race shortly after Naheed Nenshi entered the race. She then endorsed Nenshi. Welcome back to The Boat Princess podcast and today I am coming to you from the other side of the world at the ICOMIA Congress in La Rochelle, France.  In this episode I am having the big boating conversations with Anne Dunbar, the Executive Director of IBEX, International Boat Builders Exhibition and Conference, which serves the North American market.  As Covid took over the world, Anne was faced with cancelling live shows and exhibitions and and a workforce crisis. She became instrumental in the road to recovery, leading IBEX, alongside other leadership teams from IFBSO (who have just celebrated 60 years of community and comradery). Anne shares how even at that level of leadership coming together at the live shows and sharing conversations on stage or ideas in workshops is how they stay connected to the front line and keep the heart beat of the industry going and growing.  With a love of boats for as long as she can remember, Anne actually completed a degree in communications and filming after school and moved to LA with the dream to make movies, and work behind the scenes in production during the days of the new and emerging MTV era.  Anne recalls facing the barriers of entry and gender issues, getting her first introduction to the marine industry with an invitation to work at the Long Beach Boat Show, working the booth over a 10 day show.  She describes the experience and now provides the advice of taking up opportunities even when you don't feel ready. 'It was so much fun meeting new people, and I just love boats.' From 'manning' the booth her performance landed her a job selling advertising in the marine industry. 'My job was to go to boat shows and talk to people - it was so aligned.'  Anne eventually moved back to east coast selling that incredible tech called faxing before transferring her skills to IBEX selling exhibition space in 2001. Anne shares her 'breaking the glass ceiling story' and the secrets when it comes to taking on leadership in a male dominated arena, and is well qualified as you'll hear her humbly explain how she  transformed the experience of Boat Shows around the world. Afghan refugees find Christ amidst uncertainty; Wildfire in Texas Panhandle largest in state history; Christian school counselor, opposed to perversion, gets right to appeal

The WorldView in 5 Minutes

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2024

It's Friday, March 1st, A.D. 2024.  This is The Worldview heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Afghan refugees find Christ amidst uncertainty In the aftermath of the Islamic Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan, Afghan Christians seeking refuge in neighboring Pakistan have few choices, reports International Christian Concern. Many Afghans fled to Pakistan without visas, passports, or other identification. Sardar and his Christian family initially had difficulty getting into Pakistan after the Taliban takeover. He was abducted by the Taliban en route to the border and held until his family could pay a ransom. They managed to scrape the money together, devastating them financially. Once in Pakistan, Sardar and his family were not well received. Like the thousands of other Afghan refugees, they faced hunger and poor living conditions. With no means of work, they were at the mercy of Pakistan's refugee system. More than two years later, International Christian Concern has been caring for more 30 Christian families that fled Afghanistan for Pakistan. Plus, they've also been sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with Islamic Afghan refugees in Pakistan who are spiritually open. One Christian leader said, “I started talking about the generosity of God and His sacrifice for all of humanity. These families were surprised that even God sacrificed His son for us. … I taught them about the unconditional love of Lord Jesus. They were all fascinated by this idea and His story.” In Romans 10:14-15, the Apostle Paul asked, “How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring Good News!'” Within the last year, this Christian leader has baptized 22 Afghan refugees who recently professed faith in Christ. Christian school counselor, opposed to perversion, gets right to appeal A British school employee, fired for social media posts opposing homosexual and transgender materials in class, has won the right to take her dismissal to the United Kingdom Court of Appeal, reports Christian Daily International. Kristie Higgs, a 47-year-old Christian mother of two, won the right in a ruling late last month by Judge Elisabeth Laing of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales. Higgs' attorneys had argued that her case should not be sent back to the same employment tribunal that had made serious errors. Higgs worked for seven years as a student counseling assistant at Farmor's School in Fairford, Gloucestershire, before her dismissal in 2019. In a video interview with the Christian Legal Centre, which is supporting her defense, she said, “It's shocking to think I've lost my job because of one parent who complained to the school because they didn't agree with what I shared on my Facebook page, and for the school to take sides with that parent is hard to believe.” HIGGS: “I was discriminated for my Christian beliefs. I was just sharing my concerns of what's coming into the schools and what was coming into my son's school.” Higgs shared and posted the disputed messages on her personal Facebook page after receiving an invitation on October 5, 2018, from the Church of England primary school that her younger son attended.  Entitled “Teaching the Equality Act in Schools,” the invitation read, “This year, we are using several story books to help our school community promote diversity and celebrate difference.” The letter invited parents to see the books and lesson plans at a school event. Higgs said only she, another parent, and a grandparent attended the viewing.   She saw books such as Jacob's New Dress by Sarah Hoffman, about a boy who likes to wear dresses. She said, “To me, it didn't seem to be that it was just about anti-bullying. There seemed to be something more underlying, with the Jacob's New Dress, how children could choose their own gender. I thought it was very confusing for my child because of our Christian beliefs.” That's why Higgs uploaded the Citizens Go petition link on October 24, 2018, which was headlined, “Uphold the right of parents to have children educated in line with their religious beliefs. Stop supporting LGBT indoctrination.” The petition was directed to then-U.K. Education Secretary Damian Hinds. In Psalm 56:3-4, David wrote, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, Whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” HIGGS: “As parents, who are also standing up, especially [in] America, they're reading what's actually in the books. It's very concerning, very alarming, very harmful and it's got to stop!” When she was sent home, she said her school superiors “thought the posts I was sharing were homophobic and very negative, [saying], ‘Did you realize other parents would see these?'” First, she was suspended, then she endured a disciplinary hearing for six hours on December 19, 2018, and finally fired by letter on January 7, 2019, without warning, for “gross misconduct.” Kristie Higgs explained that not too long ago the Church of England school taught “my child God's way, and now they are changing it.” Democrats upset with Biden to vote “uncommitted” in primaries Organizers are pushing for Democratic voters to select or write in “uncommitted” on their ballots in upcoming primaries, spurred on by the success of a campaign in Michigan protesting President Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war, reports TheHill.com. More than 100,000 Michiganders cast a protest vote against Biden for an “uncommitted” ballot option in Tuesday's primary, underscoring the frustration many Americans feel toward the administration amid growing calls for a cease-fire. Now, activists are pushing for similar protest votes in states including Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Washington as they seek to dial up pressure on Biden to heed their calls or risk losing their votes. Wildfire in Texas Panhandle largest in state history On Thursday, a dusting of snow covered a desolate landscape of scorched prairie, dead cattle, and burned out homes in the Texas Panhandle, giving firefighters  brief relief in their desperate efforts to corral a blaze that has grown into the largest in state history, reports the Associated Press. The Smokehouse Creek fire grew to nearly 1,700 square miles. It merged with another fire and is just 3% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Gray skies loomed over huge scars of blackened earth in a rural area dotted with scrub brush, ranchland, rocky canyons, and oil rigs. In Stinnett, a town of about 1,600, Dylan Phillips, age 24, said he hardly recognized his neighborhood, which was littered with melted street signs and the charred frames of cars and trucks.  While his family's home survived, at least a half a dozen others were smoking rubble. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 60 counties and plans to visit the Panhandle today. Sarah Hoffman, Vice President of AI and Machine Learning Research, joins host Pamela Ritchie today for a look at how artificial intelligence and machine learning is affecting investing today. Sarah unpacks the latest trends, concerns and issues surrounding AI and the effects it has on companies, people and the overall economy. She notes that Open AI recently released an enterprise-friendly version allowing companies to use the technology more seriously. So how does this relate to security concerns? Sarah points out that generative AI can alleviate data security concerns for companies, but despite improved security, challenges like fabrications, legal issues, and data ownership require attention before adoption. Sarah also touches upon emerging digital financial technologies and how it could change the way we invest and think about money and she also addresses AI in the workplace and how it could affect training and employees. Sarah Hoffman, Vice President of AI and Machine Learning Research, joins host Pamela Ritchie today for a look at how artificial intelligence and machine learning is affecting investing today. Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science involved with the design of computers or other programmed mechanical devices having the capacity to imitate human intelligence and thought. Built-in smartphone assistants, smart cars, and even music and video streaming services that seem to recommend you the perfect playlist to listen to and film to watch, are all everyday examples of Artificial Intelligence. But there is still room for advancement. So what is next for AI? And how could we potentially use AI in the financial industry to change the way we invest and think about money? Sarah and Pamela will unpack all of this and more today. Recorded on August 26, 2022. At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. We offer investors and institutions a range of innovative and trusted investment portfolios to help them reach their financial and life goals. AI is no longer for data scientists only. Most businesses have made AI tools part of their workflow. For example, we've seen chatbots, automated emails, and the like. As we embrace artificial intelligence, we have to discuss it. What is AI? What is it not? Should we use it for everything? In this episode, Sarah Hoffman, VP of AI and Machine Learning Research in Fidelity Investments, defines AI and its impact on our lives. She also describes the ethical challenges of data bias and what people are doing to overcome it. Finally, Sarah explains why diversity and prejudice are significant concerns in AI development. Tune in to this episode to learn how AI pushes for innovation.  Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode:Discover artificial intelligence as a new approach to learning and training.  Learn how AI is a reflection of our own beliefs and understanding.  Understand the relevance of diversity in the field of artificial intelligence. ResourcesConnect with Sarah on http://linkedin.com/in/sarahfhoffman (LinkedIn) and http://twitter.com/sarahfhoffman (Twitter ) Know more about https://fcatalyst.com/observations/design (FCAT) Be part of https://rhok.ca/ (Random Hacks of Kindness) Episode Highlights[00:47] AI and ML Research at FCATThe Fidelity Center for Applied Technology (FCAT) has a long history of innovation and commitment to technology. Sarah: "We invest deeply in technology. But we've also always recognized that technology is just a tool. It's really how we apply it that matters."  FCAT develops platforms and products to empower the next generation. Sarah is a part of FCAT's research team. They explore the future of artificial intelligence (AI). [02:29] Defining AISarah uses AI and machine learning (ML) interchangeably. ML refers to code learning from data.  It produces answers based on stored information to make predictions. AI is math, not magic.  [03:43] AI in the Finance World FCAT provides services that harness AI's true potential. Financial services use AI tools often. Many people use chatbots, robo-advisers, and automated email responders. Several companies have adopted personalization and sentiment analysis. Models need to adjust when something changes in the world. [06:46] Data Ethics Concerns AI learns biases through data.  Ethics boards address ethical issues regarding AI projects and decide whether a problem needs AI. Fairness and explainability tools are available to protect against inadvertent biases.  Using AI can enhance how we train people and use fairness and explainability tools.  AI tools can help with issues regarding biases.  [10:25] Automatic Writing and Coding Multiple tools are now available to help you automatically write and code. Some tools can write code for you. The system is not perfect, but it's a good way for new developers to begin. Artificial intelligence can speed up coding for experienced programmers. AI tools are limited in terms of fact-checking. It can help with brainstorming, but it's essential to be critical regarding the data an AI provides. [16:04] Democratizing Innovation  The field of no-code/low-code has improved over the years.  We must democratize innovation to share ideas with everyone. [19:57] Education and Machine LearningEach individual has their preferred learning method. For instance, some people don't learn well in classroom settings.  Artificial intelligence offers another approach to learning.   AI can simplify jargon and make knowledge more accessible to a broader range of people. [22:20] Inclusivity in AI AI tools provide feedback on how to use inclusive terms when speaking or writing.  AI biases reflect our assumptions and prejudices.  Sarah: “AI tools are showing us the AI bias. Maybe we can start thinking about it for ourselves and think about 'Do we have this bias?'...

Professor Steven Clark is on an ongoing quest to find a rare daisy that helps us understand the intricacies of evolution. Professor Steven Clark spends his days bushwhacking brushy trails until they turn into rocky scrambles, then vertical cliffs. It's arduous work in service of a unique goal. He's searching for the Columbia Gorge daisy, a rare flower that only grows in the trickles of water and tiny pockets of dirt in the wet, cliffside crevices of the Columbia River Gorge. You may or may not be the kind of person who goes to this kind of trouble to find a flower. And this flower is not even particularly beautiful or environmentally consequential, as far as modern science is concerned. But for Steven Clark, this flower is about as special as any in the world. For this episode of Crosscut Escapes, Clark and Crosscut video producer Sarah Hoffman slog through the woods and scramble up to a ledge in the middle of a waterfall in order to count a few tiny, rare flowers as part of a larger research project documenting rare plants in the Pacific Northwest.  Their journey provides a deeper sense of just how beautifully complex the natural world is — and the importance of each tiny piece of the evolutionary puzzle to make a thriving whole. --- Credits Host/Co-producer: Ted Alvarez Co-producer: Sara Bernard Music: The Explorist Executive Producer: Mark Baumgarten

The intelligence demonstrated by machines is known as Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence has grown to be very popular in today's world. It is the simulation of natural intelligence in machines that are programmed to learn and mimic the actions of humans. These machines are able to learn with experience and perform human-like tasks. As technologies such as AI continue to grow, they will have a great impact on our quality of life. It's but natural that everyone today wants to connect with AI technology somehow, may it be as an end-user or pursuing a career in Artificial Intelligence. Advances in artificial intelligence are likely to herald an unprecedented period of rapid innovation and technological change, which will fundamentally alter current industries and the economy. So, as we reopen into versions of normalcy, Sarah discusses the state of AI as well as potential opportunities and challenges the industry may face. Sarah believes this pandemic highlighted a lot of socio-cultural awareness of biases for technology and AI. She says many companies and universities are trying to improve by becoming more aware of ethical considerations. Sarah notes that AI can be used to help investors choose investment strategies. However, it is important to be aware of the potential ethical issues that could come up. She also discusses using AI and technology to take away some parts of jobs humans don't want for safety reasons. Additionally, Sarah shares her thoughts on the regulatory environment noting that it depends on the country as some are strongly regulated, while others have little regulation. As the impacts of climate change become more apparent, communities along the coast are facing difficult decisions. Two of those communities, the coastal villages of Queets and Taholah, are currently developing plans to relocate. These are ancestral homes to the Quinault tribe, but they've become unsustainable, in part due to rising sea levels. Crosscut video producer Sarah Hoffman and science and environment editor Ted Alvarez have spent more than a year in the presence of the tribal members contemplating the move. The resulting documentary, The Rising, premieres this weekend on KCTS 9. The aim of the film is to present this story from the perspective of the people living it. The key, say the journalists, is to show up, get out of the way and listen. For this bonus episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, we invited Hoffman and Alvarez to talk about how they went about doing that. This conversation was recorded at the KCTS9 studios in Seattle on Oct. 24 as part of the Crosscut Talks Live series.

Sarah Hoffman (@sarahhoffman101) and Ian Hoffman share JACOB'S ROOM TO CHOOSE, the follow-up to the 2014 release JACOB'S NEW DRESS. In this newest story Jacob and his friend Sophie encounter a confrontation from classmates when Jacob enters the boys restroom wearing a dress. Sophie experiences a similar issue in the girl's room and the later their teacher leads the class in a discussion over gendered spaces. Which leads me to ask... Have you met Jacob yet? Have you been invited into Ms. Reeves’ classroom? Have you experienced teachers and schools at their greatest and also at their most vulnerable? It’s a place we each encounter throughout our days, that space where we ask ourselves if we’re going to allow someone else in. Someone who maybe doesn’t look just like us or dress just like us or act just like us. But as Sarah and Ian share in our conversation, the kids are often already showing the way for us. We adults just need to watch and to listen. You can access even more information about this book and its author and illustrator by visiting www.matthewcwinner.com/podcast. March 3 is World Hearing Day. And 2018 was a very special World Hearing Day for Caroline for two reasons. First, Caroline can hear because she received a cochlear implant on December 12, 2017, and it was activated on January 29, 2018. As a result, Caroline wanted to do a second special thing: officially thank the people of Alberta and Canada for her hearing - because Canada has universal health care. Caroline and Andreas will never see a bill for the implant or processor. Andreas notes its impractical to thank everyone individually. Instead, in this episode, Caroline thanks the people of Alberta through her guest, Alberta's Minister of Health, Sarah Hoffman. Before leaving, Minister Hoffman gives Caroline the scoop with news about a new infant screen program in Alberta that has already produced results.   Special thanks to the Edmonton Office of Canadian Hard of Hearing Association.
