Wally Langfellow joins the Lake Show with Fernando Attanon to talk about the Wood Bat Little League Tournament happening this weekend in Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park   The 2024 Baseball in Benin Little League Wood Bat Tournament gets underway on Thursday (Aug 1) and runs through Sunday (Aug 4) in Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park.   41 Little League teams from around the Twin Cities metro area will play in this year's tournament.  Teams competing exclusively use wood bats. The tournament is completely run by volunteers, and will again benefit the Baseball in Benin (BIB) project which has been going on since 2010.   Fernando Attanon, the President of the Baseball and Softball Federation in Benin will be on hand for this weekend's tournament  along with 22-year old Beninese player Sadock Gnarigo, who grew up in the BIB program and is currently playing college baseball at Century College in White Bear Lake where he will be a sophomore this fall.  Gnarigo is the first-ever baseball player from Benin to play the game outside of his country and at the next level.    All proceeds from this weekend's Wood Bat Tournament will continue to support the BIB project which includes building Benin's first ever baseball field and shipping equipment to Benin. The Wood Bat Tournament, now in its 20th year, is a great way for the players in Minnesota to connect and help the players in Africa. Haliburton's game-winning shot occurred after Zach LaVine missed a free throw that would have given the Bulls the lead with 22.6 second left. LaVine, who scored a game-high 42 points, was fouled on a 3-point attempt by Bennedict Mathurin and converted the first two free throw tries. After Haliburton's 3-pointer, a game-tying shot attempt by Nikola Vucevic bounced off the rim. Mathurin added 17 points for the Pacers (29-36), while DeMar DeRozan scored 23 for the Bulls. In a statement, the commissioner's office says its investigation included interviews of more than 15 people, including Clevinger and a woman who said she is the mother of Clevinger's child, as well as thousands of electronic communications and other documents. Clevinger has voluntarily agreed to submit to evaluations by the joint treatment boards under the CBA and to follow any recommendations. Tennis – Djokovic withdraws after failed bid to play Indian Wells Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the upcoming BNP Paribas Open after losing his bid to enter the United States unvaccinated to play in the Southern California event. Play in the combined ATP-WTA event begins Wednesday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden and runs through March 19. Djokovic had requested a vaccine waiver to enter the U.S., but Homeland Security denied it. The U.S. is ending its COVID-19 emergency declaration on May 11, which is too late for Djokovic to play at Indian Wells and Miami. EPL – Biggest loss in 90 years for Man U in 7-0 rout at Liverpool Liverpool has brought Manchester United crashing down to earth with a stunning 7-0 rout in the Premier League at Anfield. It was United’s worst competitive defeat in more than 90 years. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah struck twice and Roberto Firmino scored the other with six of the goals coming in an explosive second-half performance. The score also eclipsed Liverpool's previous best victory against United, which was a 7-1 win in 1895. Liverpool took advantage of losses for top four rivals Newcastle and Tottenham on Saturday to strengthen its own bid to qualify for the Champions League. Golf – PGA – Kurt Kitayama breaks through in wild finish at Bay Hill Kurt Kitayama kept finishing one shot behind the game’s best players. He beat them all at Bay Hill on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory. Kitayama made a triple bogey on the ninth hole to let everyone back into the Arnold Palmer Invitational. And then he beat them with a clutch birdie putt on the 17th hole, and a 50-foot lag putt to an inch for par on the 18th. He finished with a 72 and a one-shot win over Rory McIlroy and Harris English. Jordan Spieth, defending champion Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Tyrrell Hatton were two behind. NASCAR – William Byron wins at Las Vegas as Hendrick dominates William Byron took the lead on the second-to-last lap of overtime to win the NASCAR Cup Series race at Las Vegas and put an exclamation mark on a dominant day for Hendrick Motorsports. The top three drivers were from Hendrick, with Byron beating teammates Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman. Bowman won last year's March race at Las Vegas. This is Byron's fifth career victory in his six seasons. He led 176 laps and won both stages. IndyCar – Marcus Ericsson wins rough IndyCar season-opening race Marcus Ericsson outlasted the carnage on the downtown streets of St. Petersburg for a surprise victory for Chip Ganassi Racing. It was the fourth career IndyCar victory for the Swedish former Formula One driver. But it was a messy opener in which Jack Harvey was taken to a hospital for observation. Helio Castroneves needed an ice pack and X-rays. A pair of cars went airborne, the leaders crashed each other and the entire Andretti Autosport fleet was eliminated. MNN Heath Report for 12/10/21:  This week on the Minnesota Native News Health Report…Governor Walz is urging Minnesotans to get booster shots… ahead of the holidays.  And… The FDA has now approved booster shots for 16- and 17-year-olds. But first, researchers are racing to understand the threat of the Omicron variant.  I'm Marie Rock.   Story A The Omicron variant is FOUR times more transmissible that's according to an early study of latest COVID variant.  Still… the C-D-C says cases of omicron that have shown up in the United States have only caused mild disease in the 40 patients identified so far.  Researchers are racing to understand the threat of the Omicron variant… and how it will impact people who have already been vaccinated.  Just for some perspective… The first COVID case was diagnosed TWO years ago in December of 2019 in Wuhan China. Since then, the disease has claimed the lives of more than 5-point-2 million people world-wide. Story BHere in Minnesota…. Health officials are expressing concern about the number of people filling up I-C-U beds in our state.  This prompted Governor Walz to urge people to get booster shots and vaccinations…  Walz said: Don't take up a hospital bed because you are unvaccinated.  Governor Walz made that remark at a vaccination event at Century College, where more than 500 first doses and booster shots were given.   Health officials say that many hospitals around the state have more critically ill patients… than they have intensive care beds available at this time.  That's a problem when patients need hospitalization for problems other than COVID. Unvaccinated Minnesotans make up the majority of COVID-related hospitalizations. That's why Governor Walz is saying: get your shots. Some people have reportedly had trouble getting an appointment for their booster shot, but Walz encourages people to keep trying… at their healthcare clinic or through your local pharmacy.   Story C  Federal regulators approved booster shots for 16- and 17-year-olds… the emergency approval of the Pfizer COVID booster vaccination comes less than a month after health officials declared that everyone 18 and up is eligible to receive a booster shot six months after receiving the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines…. Or two months after getting the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine. For more information about when and where to get your booster shot go online to Vaccine connector DOT MN DOT gov  For the Minnesota Native News Health Report - I'm Marie Rock.

In this session we examine some of the ways in which we have seen paramedics diversify through a multitude of roles within the healthcare economy. We chat with Gary Strong; Paramedic and CPD lead from the College of Paramedics and Caroline Phillips; my co-host, Paramedic and Palliative care Paramedic. The session is intended to unpack, examine our roles and journey through pre-hospital care and finally give insight into some of the positive and challenging aspects of diversification we have seen within paramedic practice in the contemporary climate. In the episode we discuss: The variety of roles that are open to Paramedics & ways in which Paramedicine is changing. We examine Gary’s path through Paramedicine, how he has got to where he is now and what got him there (education, roles and reflections). Caroline’s path through Paramedicine, from education, roles and reflections on current and past job titles within paramedic practice. My own (Eoin’s) path through Paramedicine, how I have got to where I am now and what got me there (education, roles, reflections) Final thoughts on pathways, education and the future of diversity and the role of a paramedic itself. As we see the diversity of roles within our expansive field of practice we reflect on where the profession has come from and how quickly it has adapted to new eco-systems of healthcare. We also reflect on some of the fundamental traits of paramedics around adaptability and flexibility as the DNA of what makes a paramedic so integrated and embedded within various domains of practice. I hope you enjoy this wider ranging conversation on the evolution of the 'paramedic'.

The museum’s current photography exhibition, entitled Tony Duran: California, departs from the museum’s water-inspired artwork, but there’s another connection. Tony Duran is a Winona native who has forged a career photographing celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone and Beyoncé. The exhibit includes those portraits and dozens of others. “I started thinking of Tony as an old-time mariner,” Schell said, reflecting on the exhibit’s landing at the Marine Art Museum. “They would go out into the world, see all these amazing, unbelievable things, then come home and probably have a hard time actually explaining them to folks.” Duran dedicated the exhibit, which runs through April 25, to his mother, who lives in town. Photographer Sarah Sampedro appreciates both the backstory and the artistic goals of Melissa Borman’s photography exhibit “A Piece of Dust in the Great Sea of Matter.” Sampedro said that several years ago, Borman suffered an injury that limited her mobility for a year. Stuck inside, the photographer perused images of outdoor spaces, only to note how often female bodies were treated as objects or passive scenery in landscape photography. Courtesy of Melissa Borman Installation detail from "A Piece of Dust in the Great Sea of Matter" at the Niche Gallery at Century College in White Bear Lake, Minn. After recovering, Borman invited friends to join her for outside photography sessions. Each person chose what they would wear, where they would be, and how they would interact with the natural world around them. In some photos, the person’s face is hidden, allowing Sampedro and other viewers to imagine themselves into the photo. In others, the person’s expression is an important part of the viewing experience. Borman’s show is viewable at the Niche Gallery at Century College in White Bear Lake through March 9. Minneapolis artist Jodi Reeb appreciates the photography exhibit of Steve Ozone’s work, “No Claim: Assimilation, Adaptation, and Integration,” at TractorWorks in Minneapolis. The photographs are of flowers and vegetables against a black background. Ozone is of Chinese and Japanese descent, and grew up in a predominantly white suburban town. His photographs of the Chinese vegetables, familiar in his boyhood home, explore the sense of difference he felt growing up. Courtesy of Steve Ozone "Dahlia #431" by Steve Ozone, displayed at "No Claim: Assimilation, Adaptation, and Integration" at TractorWorks. Courtesy of Steve Ozone "Orchid #35" by Steve Ozone, displayed at "No Claim: Assimilation, Adaptation, and Integration" at TractorWorks. Reeb calls the still life photographs “very simple and beautiful,” adding “against this black background, so you almost have a sense of reverence and special-ness coming through.” The exhibit runs through April 21.

“We have to be able to have these uncomfortable conversations and put in some uncomfortable strategies for people to move forward.” ~Brandon Jones What, exactly, is intergenerational trauma? How does structural racism even work? For Brandon Jones, the answers are balled up in the same knot of his origins story. As a psychotherapist, a professor with dual Masters degrees, and a 2013 Bush Foundation Leadership Fellow, Brandon’s committed to educating people about the intentional cycles of trauma and drama that supremacist culture has fostered within families of color.  For white folks, confronting these life-long, centuries-old systems requires acknowledgement of advantages that most of us have come to rely on, consciously and unconsciously. Our conversation begins with Brandon’s winding journey of self-discovery and travels through instances of early bias conditioning and “bootstrapping” - the racist myth that hard work is enough to level the playing field for all - in his own life. He sheds light on aspects of everyday, institutional racism, easy to overlook if you’re not intimately acquainted with them. What I call out as ignorance or “blindness” on the part of white folks, Brandon defines as denial, the privilege to avoid confronting what is known - another underhanded tactic from the supremacy playbook.  Listeners, you know how much I love a good chat! Well, Brandon humored yours truly so much that we almost ran out of time for the healer questions. Almost. GUEST BIO:  Brandon Jones is a Psychotherapist, Professor and currently serves as the Integrated Services Manager at NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center. He specializes in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Historical and Intergenerational trauma, Social/Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Leadership, and Youth Justice. Born and raised in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Brandon has survived living in a home of domestic violence and various other forms of trauma. Brandon holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Minnesota, a Masters in Community Psychology from Metropolitan State University, and a Masters in Psychotherapy (MFT) from Adler Graduate School. Seth believes in specialization. Eurotech (the existing shop Seth now owns) specializes in BMW, Mercedes and Audi cars.  He is a firm believer in using factory tools to ensure proper repairs and coding. His team of highly trained and certified technicians are able to diagnose today’s complex vehicle systems! His second location, Green Garage, works on all makes and models. Training Company. Seth also owns and runs a BMW tech support company called LMV Bavarian that provides support and programming to a growing network of over 200 shops via remote diagnostics.  He also teaches national seminars on BMW diagnostics. Seth has also partnered with SSF auto parts in their unique ‘hands-on’ training program. Involved. He believes idea sharing and networking with other shop owners has helped grow his business. When he is not working, you will often find him hunting with his dog or on a snowmobile race track. This episode covers Seth’s Scholarship Endowment for Century College. Talking points: Seth has provided a $25,000 endowment scholarship for Century College- Thorson Automotive Scholarship sponsored by Eurotech. It all started with family gifting donations to college in Seth’s name for birthday’s and holiday’s. Outreach department contacted Seth, realized there weren’t scholarship opportunities for the automotive department at school. Based on principle and interest that’s available to pay out- $1,000-$1,200 per year for scholarships, lasts virtually forever. Creator of endowment scholarship is able to dictate the criteria and terms for the scholarship. Battling tech shortage starts at middles school and high school level. Many schools are under-equipped with tools for teaching. Community college challenges. Attracting the right people, need to reach out and educate guidance counselors about an automotive career path. Attend school boards, meet with school superintendents. Parents and students need to view an automotive career as a valuable opportunity. It starts with industry pay. College is an important foundation for techs. The automotive shop can fine tune and take techs to next level with proper training. We need participation from shop owners to join the advisory board as well to steer curriculum development. Hiring techs out of college. Don’t expect new techs to automatically know everything post-college. Assign mentors to help guide and train them. Let new techs do various challenging tasks besides changing oil and brakes to keep engaged.
