In this episode of The Compendium, we unravel the twisted tale of Michael Alig: The Club Kid King Who Killed for Fame. At the height of New York nightlife, Alig built an empire of excess, flamboyance, and infamy, transforming the Limelight nightclub into a hedonistic playground where anything—and everything—was possible. But behind the glitter and glamour lurked a dark undercurrent of drug-fueled chaos, manipulation, and ultimately, murder. We dive deep into the rise and fall of Michael Alig and the Club Kids, the role of Peter Gatien, the shocking Angel Melendez murder, and how a scene built on rebellion spiraled into true crime history. From the neon-drenched dance floors of the 1990s to the gritty reality of New York crime stories, this is the cautionary tale of a subculture that burned too bright—and paid the ultimate price. We give you just the Compendium, but if you want more, here are our resources: Disco Bloodbath - by James St. James Party Monster (2003) - by Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato Michael Alig - Wipipedia Party Monsters The Shockumentry - by Fenton Bailey Michael Alig and the Limelight Murder - by The Village Voice Host & Show Info Hosts: Kyle Risi & Adam Cox About: Kyle and Adam are more than just your hosts, they're your close friends sharing intriguing stories from tales from the darker corners of true crime, the annals of your forgotten history books, and the who's who of incredible people. Lost Spaces

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2024 65:46

So, if you were to ask me to overly generalise and boil down the types of experiences that guests on this show have had when first accessing a queer space I'd say they neatly fit in to two categories: 1) there are those who feel instantly at home and like they've arrived. 2) there are those who feel like an outsider, or a 'tourist' in the space. Sometimes that feeling of being an outsider goes away after a few visits when they get the chance to ease in to the space and better understand the culture. But sometimes they remain a tourist... which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Which brings us to this week's guest - author, screenwriter, and producer Abdi Nazemian - who never stopped feeling like a tourist, but still credits his lost space, Disco 2000 at The Limelight in New York City, with inspiring him to be passionate and brave and fun. We talk about the club kid scene in this episode, which was happening in NYC in the early 90s. I don't think you need to know much about the history of the scene to follow the conversation, but if you're so inclined I'd recommend reading this article to find out more (they even have their own Wikipedia page!) Follow me Instagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespod Facebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespod Support me Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespod Follow my guest Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abdaddy/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Abdaddy Website: https://www.abdinazemian.com/ Takeaways Arriving in New York City for college was a transformative experience for Abdi Nazemian, who felt a sense of freedom and self-expression in the city. Abdi's countercultural fashion sense and artistic interests set him apart in his boarding school, where he felt isolated and craved the vibrancy of a city like New York. The Club Kid scene in New York City in the 1990s provided a sense of community and liberation for Abdi, who found acceptance and a space to explore his identity. Abdi's journey of self-discovery and coming to terms with his sexuality was influenced by his experiences in the club scene and the challenges he faced in a conservative boarding school environment. The Club Kid scene had a profound impact on Abdi, inspiring him to create a new identity and embrace a sense of freedom and self-expression. The club kid scene provided a sense of liberation, creativity, and boldness for Abdi Nazemian. Creating a persona can be a survival necessity for queer individuals The process of self-creation in the Club Kid scene allowed Abdi to become the person he wanted to be. Being an outsider in different communities taught Abdi the importance of forgiveness and acceptance. Forgiveness requires acknowledging that blame may have been misplaced and finding peace. Blame, acceptance, and forgiveness are important aspects of personal growth and finding peace. Fear and shame associated with sexuality during the AIDS epidemic had a profound impact on queer individuals. Counterculture plays a significant role in shaping mainstream culture, and fresh ideas are essential in art and entertainment. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/k-anderson/message

Butch and the Rolling Outlaws followed Billy to the Old Stone Church and used a spell given to him by Boss Hawg to bind Dragon in a golden meshwork net. Magda and Ariella tried to fight Butch and his men, but Magda's flashback from her fight with Vestinian left her helpless in the fetal position. Ariella rescued Magda. The two women are likely somewhere in the church, being hunted by Butch's men.         Butch then told Billy it was time for Billy to pay for Big Hack's death. Dante and his bounty hunters are coming for Callista. Outside her building, Lincoln and Mercutio attacked the Flechette Sisters and their giant panthers. Lincoln landed a near-killing shot on Betty Flechette, then fled for the secret passage that led into the building where he and Mercutio could connect with Callista, her Club Kid troops, and her bodyguard Bobby the Minotaur. Mercutio used the passage's door to cut a pursuing panther in half, but Veronica Flechette blew up that door, filling the passage with smoke and broken brick. Black Hoodie Alchemy
44: Club Kids & Party Monsters - The Murderous Michael Alig

Black Hoodie Alchemy

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2023 70:05

This week on the show, we discuss the infamous case of Michael Alig, the 90's NYC club promoter known for his flamboyant pageantry and prankish antics that eventually murdered one of his friends, chopped them up in a bathtub and dumbed them in the Hudson River. Not only that, but it all quickly escalated into a full-on media circus as police failed to investigate, rumors ran rampant in the clubs and newspapers, and Alig himself joked about murdering Angel Melendez in public and in interviews. And this was all while Alig was hanging out with legendary icons like Ru Paul, and other zany characters like "James St. James", "Jenny Talia", and "Waltpaper". As grisly and flashy as this case simultaneously was, it's little wonder it was turned into a movie released in 2003 entitled "Party Monster", starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green (and receiving pretty bad reviews overall.) Dressing up in a punkish, sometimes-androgynous aesthetic in the vein of David Bowie, Boy George, Lady Gaga, or the aforementioned Ru Paul, this brash and artistic youth movement of the "Club Kids" began as a jabby satire of the club scene that artist Andy Warhol had produced, but quickly became its own cliche. What began as a vibrant and mostly-positive NYC club scene of alt-kids -- self-proclaimed "Freaks" that were minorities of all kinds (particularly of the LGBTQ+ variety) -- that weren't even doing drugs, eventually descended into an absolute drug-fueled rampage-of-sorts through the NY club scene that led to murder, hubris, blood-soaked club parties, lots of drugs, and a whole lot of regret for a lot of people. This story is absolutely bonkers on every level: to the incubation of a unique sub-culture, to the mind of a deeply flawed and troubled misfit murderer, the circus-like club antics, the proto-LGBTQ+ history, and the absolute abject failure of the NYPD to bring proper justice to the situation in due time. Hopefully you dig it! This week's featured music: don't forget to support that black hoodie rap and all your favorite independent artists! Red Tops - Rothstein Another Saturday Night - M.U.T.T. Tales From The Gutter, Author's Tales Of Wild Adventures With Wild Bands#author #newbook #heavymetal #rockband #70s #80s #goodfellas Mike Corcione is a rabid music fan who lived his dream of making it in the music industry through a whirlwind rock and roll career beginning in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Starting his professional life in music as a nightclub DJ in 1978 working for wiseguys in clubs on Long Island, Tales From the Gutter follows Mike as he ascends the ladder of working in music at thrash metal record labels and import record distributors, leading an underground cult-favorite New York City sleaze metal band, Sweet Pain, tour managing for the platinum selling heavy metal band, L.A. Guns, promoting rock and roll nightclubs, and DJing at Peter Gatien's infamous Club Kid hangout, the Limelight, in an era of legally drinking at 18, no-photo driver's licenses, and the pre-crack and pre-AIDS New York City.Raised in an environment of old world Italian values with the infamous Lucchese wiseguys featured in Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas, it was ultimately music that gave Mike his purpose. This is a story of passion, hard work, and making your dreams come true, with lots of rock and roll debauchery on the side. Follow Mike and his friends in TALES FROM THE GUTTER on their wild adventures with Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Danger Danger, Iron Maiden, L.A. Guns, and more, while gaining fascinating insight into a bygone era when the music industry was at the height of its powers. To purchase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZQKKZCK?ref_=pe_3052080_276849420Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/1985roaddog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/talesfromthegutter/Linktree: https://linktr.ee/talesfromthegutterYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@beforeiforget1985Thanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteAnd Now!!! In March 1996, “King of the Club Kids," promoter Michael Alig, after appearing on TV's Geraldo and on the cover of New York magazine, bashed his friend and DJ Angel Melendez in the head with a hammer. The body was then dismembered and stuffed into a duct-taped cardboard box. Alig proceeded to tell anyone who would listen—including his friends from the raging '90s NYC club scene—what he had done. The problem was, Alig's well-known, over the top, and depraved behavior was such that no one believed him. “Has anyone seen Angel?” “He's dead. Michael Alig, or you may know him better as Party Monster, was crowned king of the Club Kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. You may have heard of the club kids, some famous examples today are Bjork, Amanda Lepore, and Ru Paul. They ruled the streets of Manhattan when the streetlights came on and partied the night away. Michael would throw these elaborate parties with crazy performers, wild themes and loads of drugs but it wouldn't take long for the Club Kid scene to come crashing down to the ground. By the end two club kids would become murderers and one of their own, Angel Melendez would be the one killed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
