God lytting!
Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. With the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in full effect, I sat down again with Eric Hynes, critic and director of film curation and programming at the Jacob Burns Film Center. First we discussed two very different Competition titles about parent-child entanglements: Club Kid (directed, written by, and starring Jordan Firstman) and The Beloved (aka El Ser Querido, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, starring Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo). Then we exchanged films that only one of us had seen: Clarissa, from Directors' Fortnight, a Mrs. Dalloway adaptation directed by Arie & Chuko Esiri; and then John Travolta's directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach. In this episode, we dive into the glitter-soaked rise and catastrophic fall of New York City's infamous Club Kid scene, as portrayed in the film Party Monster. But beyond the tabloid-fueled fame lies a far darker true story — the murder of Andre "Angel" Melendez. We explore how Michael Alig, once a self-proclaimed king of nightlife, built a celebrity persona in the early '90s underground party world alongside figures like James St. James. Fueled by fame, excess, and escalating drug use, the scene spiraled into chaos culminating in Andre "Angel" Melendez's brutal killing in 1996.Sources:Party Monster by James St. JamesGlory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/michael-alig-dead-club-kid-party-monster-1107737/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Melendez
Strangers, we are dark again this week, but please enjoy this episode from the vault, with a special added bonus. In the mid-1990s Michael Alig was king of New York City nightlife, ruling over a group of misfits known as the Club Kids. His parties made him the vanguard of shock-factor cool, inflating his ego and his drug problem, until it all went spiraling out of control. How do you know when the party's over? When someone ends up dead.

An androgenous figurehead of a found family that refuses to grow up -- if you've never thought of Peter Pan in those terms, director Tina Romero is here to set you straight (er, in a manner of speaking). Tina also shares the ins, outs, and inspirations behind her feature debut, Queens of the Dead, which continues and reinvents a family legacy of zombie cinema (Tina is the daughter of the legendary George A. Romero). And as always, Jordan digs up all the connective tissue between all of the above. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about Nia DaCosta's new film, Hedda, starring Tessa Thompson. I first shared this episode in 2024, and here's what I had to say: So, if you were to ask me to overly generalise and boil down the types of experiences that guests on this show have had when first accessing a queer space I'd say they neatly fit in to two categories:1) there are those who feel instantly at home and like they've arrived. 2) there are those who feel like an outsider, or a 'tourist' in the space. Sometimes that feeling of being an outsider goes away after a few visits when they get the chance to ease in to the space and better understand the culture. But sometimes they remain a tourist... which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Which brings us to this week's guest - author, screenwriter, and producer Abdi Nazemian - who never stopped feeling like a tourist, but still credits his lost space, Disco 2000 at The Limelight in New York City, with inspiring him to be passionate and brave and fun. We talk about the club kid scene in this episode, which was happening in NYC in the early 90s. I don't think you need to know much about the history of the scene to follow the conversation, but you might enjoy this article for some background

Escuchar audio

The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
In this episode of The Compendium, we unravel the twisted tale of Michael Alig: The Club Kid King Who Killed for Fame. At the height of New York nightlife, Alig built an empire of excess, flamboyance, and infamy, transforming the Limelight nightclub into a hedonistic playground where anything—and everything—was possible. But behind the glitter and glamour lurked a dark undercurrent of drug-fueled chaos, manipulation, and ultimately, murder. We dive deep into the rise and fall of Michael Alig and the Club Kids, the role of Peter Gatien, the shocking Angel Melendez murder, and how a scene built on rebellion spiraled into true crime history. From the neon-drenched dance floors of the 1990s to the gritty reality of New York crime stories, this is the cautionary tale of a subculture that burned too bright—and paid the ultimate price. Michael Alig, or you may know him better as Party Monster, was crowned king of the Club Kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. You may have heard of the club kids, some famous examples today are Bjork, Amanda Lepore, and Ru Paul. They ruled the streets of Manhattan when the streetlights came on and partied the night away. Michael would throw these elaborate parties with crazy performers, wild themes and loads of drugs but it wouldn't take long for the Club Kid scene to come crashing down to the ground. By the end two club kids would become murderers and one of their own, Angel Melendez would be the one killed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
