Anyway and as always, thank you for watching or listening, I hope you enjoy this here episode, and I hope you have a wonderful wonderful rest of your day. PARTY PLEASER: Melanie & Melvin summarize Beckman, that weird Christian-marketed movie produced by David A.R. White where he plays a John Wick/Taken-esque assassin. The catch? He's a recent Christian convert. Does that stop him from killing dozens of people? Tune in to find out! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 27-minutes discussing the content of Christian movies, interpreting what they're communicating, their advertising, and so much more. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Beckman feels like a YouTube movie made by YouTubers back in, like, 2011. You could almost see Freddie Wong making something like it with Corridor Digital, except probably more fun. Melvin never watched Beckman even though he's owned it since mid-2020. Then, he watched it twice in a row for... reasons. David A.R. White routinely plays pastors in the movies he produces. Melvin finds this to be an odd reoccurrence.Gabriel Sabloff shared in the commentary track that he does a hard cut to action in the middle of the first act because he felt audiences would lose interest in the setup. Melvin comments that this is a recurrent problem in which certain director's lack trust in their audience to patiently engage a movie.Beckman keeps calling Tabitha his daughter. One big problem: she's not his daughter. They're not even blood related.Beckman is too self-serious as a movie to be particularly enjoyable, especially when compared to something like John Wick where the whole franchise is simultaneously "serious" but very aware of its exciting-thrill-ride nature.Exploring the wisdom behind applyied violence.Recommendations:Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) (Movie) & Vol. 2 (2004) (Movie)Missing (2023) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Paris Marx is joined by Molly Crabapple to discuss why AI image generation tools are a threat to illustrators and why we need to refuse the idea that Silicon Valley's visions of technology are inevitable. Molly Crabapple is an artist and writer based in New York. She is the author of two books, Drawing Blood and Brothers of the Gun with Marwan Hisham. Follow Molly on Twitter at @mollycrabapple.Tech Won't Save Us offers a critical perspective on tech, its worldview, and wider society with the goal of inspiring people to demand better tech and a better world. Is AI a helping hand to struggling artists or a quick way to steal another artist's hard work? That's at the center of a controversy brewing with the artists over at Corridor Digital. Speaking of digital art, one detail that seems to be tough for some game developers is Black hair. After years of games only offering afros and cornrows (if you were lucky), things have begun changing for the better --- but still have room to improve. No word on if a new game is coming, but the new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Mutant Mayhem, looks like a breath of fresh air for the long-running franchise. Finally, we catch up with HBO's The Last of Us and are oh-so-close to the finale. Will they stick the landing? Today on the podcast, I'm joined by Jordan Criss, a longtime friend, and guest. In many ways, this conversation was really us catching up after not talking for a couple of weeks. As always, it's a lot of fun for us to dive into all the things that we're thinking about or interested in, or just the going on in life. We start this conversation by talking about video games and the difference between video game storytelling and storytelling in film. Then, we cover the bases of some of our favorite story-driven games, like Mass Effect. I also bring up that I am currently working on a playthrough of the last of us, part two, which I'm actually streaming on YouTube. So if you go to the Feeding Curiosity page, I think there are four episodes at the time of this recording. We get into other ideas about telling storytelling and technology. For instance, we talk about corridor digital, a VFX YouTube channel. I've been exploring all of their content and understanding how we use software and technology to create lifelike effects that aren't really there. I also talk of another computer-driven software. A channel called Two-Minute papers, which used the video game, GTA, and AI image processing to create a lifelike version of the game in all, so many cool things happening within the creative realms of creating more and more lifelike simulations. In another area of this, we also talk about electronic vehicles a little bit and the future. So with that summarization, I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jordan, Chris, and as always, there will be show notes for you to find links to all of the things that I just mentioned here and timestamps for you to find those sections and what we thought about them. So you can explore them yourself. On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are pissing off L.A. tough guys, disposing of bodies, and maybe starring in a big-time Hollywood movie with the 2005 Shane Black film, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. We all want to be in the pictures, right? I mean, who out there doesn’t? Imagine seeing your name up in lights and having crowds of adoring fans around you, asking for your autograph. You could find yourself in front of a camera lens and acting opposite a legend of the biz. You could be up there with Bogart, Garland, and all the rest. Show me someone that isn’t attracted to that sort of life and I’ll show you someone who’s lying. I mean, The Kinks even made a song about it, yeah? Celluloid Heroes. Even rock stars are singing about it. Erm, wait… That one had a pretty sad message, I think. How did it go? “You can see all the stars as you walk along Hollywood Boulevard. Some that you recognize. Some that you’ve hardly even heard of. People who worked and suffered and struggled for fame. Some who succeeded and some who suffered in vain.” Okay, maybe we shouldn’t aspire to put ourselves through that sort of near-definite torment. Sure, it would be cool to be flown out to L.A., hobnob with all the good-looking, Southern California people, and be put up in a fancy hotel for a while. Maybe you’ll even be shown around by a private investigator named “Gay Perry.” He might even look vaguely like Val Kilmer. Wouldn’t that be swell? It happened to Robert Downey, Jr.’s character in this film. Harry had a pretty good thing going on. Pretty good, that is, until he lost a finger and had his balls zapped with what amounted to a car battery. Look, you win some and you lose some. At least he got to reconnect with an impetuous and knockout dame. Things ended up going pretty well for him, all things considered. Still, though, he also got shot in the chest. That’s not too great. Nobody wants to end up in the hospital because they need to have a bullet removed from their body. Look, all we’re saying is this movie is really well-done. The writing is the sort of Shane Black perfection you’ve come to expect from him, there’s masterful acting happening, and the story is just so damn fun. It’s a modern telling of the hard-boiled detective novels everyone should indulge in at least once in their lives. They’re fun as hell. They make life more enjoyable, like this movie does. Makes you wonder, Maybe dreaming of being a Hollywood movie star isn’t so bad? I mean, The Kinks also sang, “I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show, A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes. Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain, And celluloid heroes never really die.” That ain’t too bad.
