There's hardly a better example of how Chicago's old buildings keep finding new life than a three-story place on Champlain Avenue in Woodlawn, just half a block south of Washington Park. Built back in 1923, the building has been a synagogue, then home to several Christian congregations. Today, it's something entirely different. Part single-family home, part creative workspace, part artists club — and still a work in progress. Even some of the original materials are being reused. In the Loop gets a tour of the space from Dennis Rodkin, Crain's Chicago Business senior real estate reporter, and Amber Ginsburg, artist, teacher and civic director of the Narrow Bridge Arts Club. Alejandra Y. Castillo, former Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development and now Chancellor Senior Fellow for Economic Development at Purdue University Northwest, joins your host, Sebastian Hassinger, to discuss how quantum technologies can drive inclusive regional economic growth and workforce development. She shares lessons from federal policy, Midwest tech hubs, and cross-state coalitions working to turn quantum from lab research into broad-based opportunity.Themes and key insightsQuantum as near-term and multi-faceted: Castillo pushes back on the idea that quantum is distant, emphasizing that computing, sensing, and communications are already maturing and attracting serious investment from traditional industries like biopharma. From federal de-risking to regional ecosystems: She describes the federal role as de-risking early innovation through programs under the CHIPS and Science Act while stressing that long-term success depends on regional coalitions across states, universities, industry, philanthropy, and local government.Inclusive workforce and supply-chain planning: Castillo argues that “quantum workforce” must go beyond PhDs to include a mapped ecosystem of jobs, skills, suppliers, housing, and infrastructure so that local communities see quantum as opportunity, not displacement.National security, urgency, and inclusion: She frames sustained quantum investment as both an economic and national security imperative, warning that inconsistent U.S. funding risks falling behind foreign competitors while also noting that private capital alone may ignore inclusion and regional equity.Notable quotes“We either focus on the urgency or we're going to have to focus on the emergency.”“No one state is going to do this… This is a regional play that we will be called to answer for the sake of a national security play as well.”“We want to make sure that entire regions can actually reposition themselves from an economic perspective, so that people can stay in the places they call home—now we're talking about quantum.”“Are we going to make that same mistake again, or should we start to think about and plan how quantum is going to also impact us?”Articles, papers, and initiatives mentionedAmerica's quantum future depends on regional ecosystems like Chicago's — Alejandra's editorial in Crain's Chicago Business calling for sustained, coordinated investment in quantum as a national security and economic priority, highlighting the role of the Midwest and tech hubs.CHIPS and Science Act (formerly “Endless Frontier”) — U.S. legislation that authorized large-scale funding for semiconductors and science, enabling EDA's Tech Hubs and NSF's Engines programs to back regional coalitions in emerging technologies like quantum.EDA Tech Hubs and NSF Engines programs — Federal initiatives that fund multi-state consortiums combining universities, companies, and civic organizations to build durable regional innovation ecosystems, including quantum-focused hubs in the Midwest.National Quantum Algorithms Center — This center explores quantum algorithms for real-world problems such as natural disasters and biopharma discovery, aiming to connect quantum advances directly to societal challenges.Roberts Impact Lab at Purdue Northwest (with Quantum Corridor) – A testbed and workforce development center focused on quantum, AI, and post-quantum cryptography, designed to prepare local talent and companies for quantum-era applications.Chicago Quantum Exchange and regional partners (Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin) – A multi-university and multi-state collaboration that pioneered a model for regional quantum ecosystems.

Cheap real estate appears to be an easy win. Lower prices, lower risk, faster cash flow. That assumption gets a lot of investors into trouble. In this episode of Test. Optimize. Scale, Stewart Beal breaks down why low-priced properties often create the biggest headaches and how early mistakes with tenants, credit quality, and location can quietly destroy returns. Stewart shares the real story behind his first five unit property, the lesson a single tenant taught him about risk, and how that experience reshaped the way he evaluates deals today. We also dive into how Stewart scaled from a teenage entrepreneur to managing thousands of residential and commercial units across Michigan, what he looks for in value add opportunities, and why who manages the property matters more than the purchase price. If you are thinking about investing in real estate, partnering with operators, or scaling a portfolio, this conversation will challenge some popular assumptions. About the guest: Stewart Beal has been active in real estate and construction for over 15 years. He founded Beal Properties in 2001 after purchasing his first five-unit apartment building at age 19. Today, he manages more than 3,100 apartments, single-family homes, and office spaces across 27 cities. He holds a degree in Business Management from Eastern Michigan University and was recognized by Crain's Detroit Business in their 20 in Their 20s feature. Topics covered: - Real estate investing mistakes beginners make - Why cheap properties often cost more long-term - Tenant quality and credit score realities - Value-add investing and forced appreciation - Scaling property management and teams - Hands-on versus hands-off investing Website and Social: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stewartbeal/ http://beal-capital.com

First Amendment rights of children could impact proposed social media access laws | Law of The Land

Social media restrictions could infringe on First Amendment rights for children Note: This conversation originally aired on the "Sound of Ideas" on Nov. 3, 2025. How to manage young people's social media use is a big question, with many factors at play, including the well-being of minors, the logistics of monitoring online activity and their constitutional rights. In Ohio, lawmakers are trying to take this matter into their own hands. One law limiting social media access is currently on hold, after a federal court blocked it as an unconstitutional restriction on First Amendment rights. That decision is now being appealed by Attorney General Dave Yost. This year, two new bills have been introduced that would limit children's access to social media in different ways and bring app stores into the equation: Senate Bill 167 (backed by Meta) and Senate Bill 175 (backed by Google). The topic was the first in our newly created series “Law of the Land” which explores how the law impacts your life. Guests: Jonathan Entin, Professor of Constitutional Law, Case Western Reserve University School of Law Morgan Reed, President, The App Association Tony Coder, Executive Director, Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation Kareem Moncree-Moffett, Ph.D., Founder, Youth Lead Alliance MLB, Ohio's Casino Control Commission and sports betting companies agree to regulation changes Note: This conversation originally aired on the "Sound of Ideas" on Nov. 17, 2025. Federal indictments against two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, have rocked Major League Baseball and the sports betting world. In response to these charges of rigging bets on specific pitches, MLB worked together with the Ohio Casino Control Commission and sports betting companies to come up with mutually-agreed upon new regulations governing what's known as microprop bets, limiting them considerably compared to what was allowed before. In this installment of our "Law of the Land" series on "Sound of Ideas," we'll explain the sports betting regulation changes, and look at the other legal problems that have come up surrounding betting in Ohio in both the NFL, involving famed Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, and NBA, related to allegations of faking an injury to help gamblers win against Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who is a former Shaker Heights High School basketball star, along with how and why the rules differ for college sports. Guests: Joe Maloney, Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications for the American Gaming Association Eric Chaffee, John C. Hutchins Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law Joe Scalzo, Sports Business Journalist for Crain's Cleveland Business

After two ineffectual exchanges of shots, Wells and Maddox shook hands, but Cuney stepped forward and said to Colonel Crain, “This is a good time to settle our difficulty;” Bowie and Wright also drew, and the firing became general. Crain killed Cuney and shot Bowie through the hip. Bowie drew his knife and rushed upon Colonel Crain. The latter, clubbing his empty pistol, dealt such a terrific blow upon Bowie's head as to bring him to his knees and break the weapon. Before the latter could recover he was seized by Dr. Maddox, who held him down for some moments, but, collecting his strength, he hurled Maddox off just as Major Wright approached and fired at the wounded Bowie, who, steadying himself against a log, half buried in the sand, fired at Wright, the ball passing through the latter's body. Wright then drew a sword-cane, and, rushing upon Bowie, exclaimed, “damn you, you have killed me.” Bowie met the attack, and, seizing his assailant, plunged his “bowie-knife” into his body, killing him instantly.
