(Este episodio especial está enteramente en inglés) (This episode is entirely in English with a brief intro in Spanish) Sohail Ahmed was born in London in the early 90s, his parents were from Pakistan and until he was 6 years old his family professed a pacific version of Islam. Then his parents were influenced by other families that began to connect to mosques lead by imams with more extremist interpretations of the Quran. That's how at a very young age he was taught to hate the infidels (kuffar) and he wished to become a martyr (a shahid). But by the age of 8 he also discovered he was attracted by kids of his same sex. He knew that homosexuality was punished by death but he couldn't leave his family and his faith and he didn't know how to deal with what he felt. Thus began the road to radicalization, which ultimately lead him to plan a terrorist act in his hometown that hopefully he did not execute. That incident together with his approachment to evolutionary theories and the acceptance of his sexual orientation turned his life upside down. We are so thankful for the opportunity to have a conversation with him and for all the mind blowing (and painful) experiences he shared. This was recorded on April 19th, 2024.

Speaking with The Younger YouHave you ever imagined engaging in a conversation with your younger, more naive, and possibly even a more hateful self? Imagine finding yourself grappling with the echoes of your past ignorance. The earlier version of you, fueled by limited experiences and misguided perspectives, expressing opinions that now seem cringe-worthy and uninformed. In an attempt to bridge the gap between your present self and that version, you realize the importance of growth and understanding. It becomes evident that the journey towards empathy and open-mindedness has transformed you, enabling you to challenge your past beliefs and recognize the flaws in your earlier thinking. Imagine such a conversation serving as a reminder of the transformative power of time and experience, highlighting the significance of evolving perspectives to foster a more compassionate and enlightened you. Imagine what it would be like speaking with the younger you.Be sure to tune in for this incredible conversation guest hosted by my friend Jeff Schoep of BeyondBarriersUSA.org, as he speaks with another former NSM member, Henry Paniccia, who is now challenging white supremacy ideology in a new and unique way.Who is Henry Paniccia? Henry Paniccia was involved in the world of white supremacy from 14 years old until he turned his back on that lifestyle and those beliefs at 21. Over the years, he was able to re-educate himself, deradicalize, and integrate into society as productive member. Two years ago he came up with the idea 'Conversations', his five-part video series where he goes through his former beliefs in explicit detail. While the content is undeniably alarming and comes with a heavy trigger warning, it is not without purpose and allows the viewer to take a deep look inside the life of a neo-Nazi. He sits on one end of the table as he is today (2023) and interviews his younger, 19-year-old self (2010). At times they speak a conversation of ideals. At times, a nostalgic trip down memory lane. And sometimes, an interrogation. ‘Conversations' is not for the faint of heart but if you can stomach it, you'll come out the other end with an incomparably better understanding of the issue at hand. Upon this, you'll understand the allure of the white supremacy world in our modern era.Learn more about and connect with Henry Paniccia online by checking out the full show notes at www.DerateTheHate.com.What have you done today to make your life a better life? We've heard the polarizing narrative, “Either you're with me or you're my enemy.” Using this polarizing statement can allow people to fall prey to being manipulated. Today's guest is Sander van der Linden. Dr. van der Linden is a professor of Social Psychology and Society and the Director of Cambridge Social Decision Making Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge. He is ranked among the top 1% of highly cited social scientists worldwide and has published over 150 research papers. He's the author of Foolproof: Why Misinformation Infects Our Minds and How to Build Immunity. Show Notes: [1:01] - Sander describes what he does at Cambridge and why we began his work on this topic beginning ten years ago. [3:22] - The early days of the internet created an interest for Sander as he saw that anyone could pretend to be someone else. [5:01] - What exactly is misinformation? [6:29] - Disinformation is the spread of misinformation with harmful or deceitful intent. [8:37] - One form of disinformation is click-baited sensational headlines that seem harmless. [10:32] - Sander describes some of the key phrases within content that usually indicate mis- or disinformation. [13:11] - Even if information is accurate, content can be written manipulatively to evoke emotion, particularly rage. This is misleading. [15:01] - Most people don't want to be a part of a flame war or in an echo chamber but the behavior is common. [16:45] - Social media algorithms seem to reward toxic behavior and amplify polarization that already exists. [20:31] - People are constantly being bombarded with information. [21:47] - Everyone is scattered in their own echo chambers because of fragmented social media. [23:49] - What should platforms be doing to help limit the spread of misinformation? What should individual people do to keep themselves safe? [26:01] - The brain needs a few experiences before developing a habit. [27:50] - Sander explains why most people don't have the facts to actually defend what they believe to be accurate information. [29:56] - Sander has developed games that help users understand misinformation. [32:02] - Using the example of climate change and global warming, Sander demonstrates how people can be misled. [35:01] - False dichotomies are a real problem and politicians in particular use this strategy. [38:50] - The goal is to help others recognize manipulation online, not necessarily to change their mind. [41:41] - There are different types of scams and most are disinformation. [43:45] - Romance scams use these tactics. How can we inoculate people against this type of information? [47:37] - Deradicalization is extremely difficult. [49:20] - There's a benefit to being somewhat skeptical. But how skeptical should you be? [52:03] - We want to be able to live our normal lives without fear, but there needs to be a healthy amount of skepticism. [55:18] - There are some crossovers between persuasion and manipulation. [60:42] - You can play the games Sander described at Inoculation Science. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Be sure to subscribe to our podcast on iTunes and leave a nice review. Mubin Shaikh is a former extremist turned counterterrorism operative and expert, who, at the age of 18 encountered the Taliban in Pakistan after a life in Canada up until then. He spent years as an extremist became an undercover agent for the Canadian govt. after the events of 9/11 changed his perspective.Mubin and I discussed his twists and turns in his life path and how he turned from someone campaigning against the west to working for the Canadian to help prevent a terror attack. He told me about the roots of the "Arab-terorrist" stereotype seen on countless movie screens, what exactly "jihad" is and what it isn't as well as how he goes about deradicalizing the young men who are in the position that he once was. Please subscribe and leave a rating if you enjoy the show.. thank you very much.00:00 Intro06:50 Parent's attitude towards western culture11:00 Comment on grooming gangs in UK11:50 The “Arab/Muslim Terrorist” stereotype 14:00 First contact with jihadists 20:50 What is “jihadism” ? 26:35 Common traits among extremist recruits 30:00 Becoming a spy for Canadian Govt. 38:50 De-radicailizing young men Mubin's book https://amzn.to/44fmYbt
Dr. Baiju Gandhi, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist and IWP student, discussed "Developing Deradicalization Programs for US Domestic Extremism" on March 30, 2023 at The Institute of World Politics. This lecture is part of IWP's Student Speaker Lecture Series. About the Lecture: In recent years, the United States homeland has seen an increased threat from domestic terrorism and extremism. Addressing this unique threat requires utilizing new tools to supplement law enforcement. Deradicalization programs may be one of these tools. Such programs' goals are to disengage radicalized or radicalizing individuals from acting violently and slowly pull that individual's mindset toward a less extreme state. While these programs have been in place in Europe for many years, development in the United States is in its infancy. In this lecture, we will review psychological theories of radicalization and deradicalization, describe existing deradicalization programs in Europe, and address suggestions for development of deradicalization programs in the United States. About the Speaker: Dr. Baiju Gandhi is a physician with a specialization in general psychiatry and sub-specialization in the psychiatric care of the medically ill. He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and Harris School of Public Policy in 2009 with a joint M.D.-M.A. in public policy. His interests include the intersection of behavioral science and national security. He is currently a student at IWP (Institute of World Politics), pursuing a graduate certificate in non-violent conflict. ***Learn more about IWP graduate programs: https://www.iwp.edu/academic-programs/ ***Make a gift to IWP: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E231090&id=18
Led by a prince, a judge and a retired paratrooper, the plot was as bizarre as it was chilling – Kill Chancellor Olaf Scholz and overthrow Germany's government. So was the plot foiled during a counter-terrorism sweep last December a fringe one? Or is it the tip of an extremist iceberg that threatens Germany? Host Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson talks with Der Spiegel National Security Reporter Fidelius Schmid; Maximilian Ruf of the Violence Prevention Network, who is a research fellow at the Center for Applied Research on Deradicalization;Political scientist Hajo Funke of the Free University of Berlin.Produced by Dina Elsayed
On Jan. 6, 2021, thousands of Trump supporters and right-wing protestors stormed the U.S. Capitol. In a matter of hours, disinformation spread blaming the attack on antifa and the Black Lives Matter Movement, despite no evidence proving that connection. Antifa itself is not an organized group with structure or a leader, so why was it blamed and what exactly is it? To share more on the history of antifascism and explore the work being done today to combat the far-right, we're joined by Shane Burley. He is a Portland-based writer and filmmaker and the editor of a new book, “¡No Pasarán!: Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis.”

This is a special 5-part series discussing the evolution of Critical Race Theory from its conception by Derrick Bell to its current, arguably diluted forms as seen by Kimberle Crenshaw and her work on intersectionality or the anti-racist publishing industry spearheaded by thinkers such as Ibram X Kendi. Trevor talks to our guest Dr. Patrick D. Anderson about the three-part article series he wrote for the website Black Agenda Report about Critical Race Theory, and how it gets weaponized and misrepresented by people on all sides of the political spectrum, including those left of center, and why. We discuss what CRT is, what it isn't, why the CRT as originally conceived by Derrick Bell is still too dangerous decades later to be promoted in earnest, and why neoliberal dilutions of CRT like Intersectionality as conceived by Kimberle Crenshaw are promoted by the powers-that-be instead. In the Pulitzer Prize finalist book Home, Land, Security: Deradicalisation and the Journey Back from Extremism (One World, 2021), Carla Power explores: what are the roots of radicalism? Journalist Carla Power came to this question well before the January 6, 2021, attack in Washington, D.C., that turned the US' attention to the problem of domestic radicalization. Her entry point was a different wave of radical panic—the way populists and pundits encouraged us to see the young people who joined ISIS or other terrorist organizations as simple monsters. Power wanted to chip away at the stereotypes by focusing not on what these young people had done but why: What drew them into militancy? What visions of the world—of home, of land, of security for themselves and the people they loved—shifted their thinking toward radical beliefs? And what visions of the world might bring them back to society? Power begins her journey by talking to the mothers of young men who'd joined ISIS in the UK and Canada; from there, she travels around the world in search of societies that are finding new and innovative ways to rehabilitate former extremists. We meet an American judge who has staked his career on finding new ways to handle terrorist suspects, a Pakistani woman running a game-changing school for former child soldiers, a radicalized Somali American who learns through literature to see beyond his Manichean beliefs, and a former neo-Nazi who now helps disarm white supremacists. Along the way Power gleans lessons that get her closer to answering the true question at the heart of her pursuit: Can we find a way to live together? An eye-opening, page-turning investigation, Home, Land, Security speaks to the rise of division and radicalization in all forms, both at home and abroad. In this richly reported and deeply human account, Carla Power offers new ways to overcome the rising tides of extremism, one human at a time. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. On the latest DOOMED livestream, Matt Binder dedicated the full show to taking listener phone calls. One listener, Brian from Alabama, shared his experience going from a fairly apolitical person to a right wing conspiracy theorist. During the earliest days of the COVID pandemic lockdowns, Brian discovered conspiracy theorists like David Icke on YouTube. He soon after was recommended Jimmy Dore by the algorithms. Then one day he discovered the Sam Seder vs. Jimmy Dore debate from 2016, which fully helped pull him out of the right wing conspiracy rabbit hole. Listen to his story about how conspiratorial content and Dore just made him angry at scapegoats instead of actually focusing proactively on what is actually going on. Caleb AKA FaradaySpeaks got his moment of fame when the New York Times used his "alt right pipeline" testimonial to talk about the dangers of misinformation and alternative media. Caleb got involved in various kinds of activism that focuses on de-radicalization, but he got completely burnt out on that when he realized none of the solutions come close to addressing the deeper issues we are faced with today. The Right keeps getting strategically better while the Left gets worse. Dissatisfied with all the laid out paths, Caleb struck out on his own... somewhere along the way he found this weird thing called Theory and then realized it has some kind of relationship with philosophy, which it turns out is not just boring historical puzzles. So why are reactionaries appropriating Theory while the would-be positive world changers lose relevancy? Is there any hope for a future that is not only increasingly worse? We talk about all this and more, including personal liberation, the PMC, ADHD-learning styles, and why base-literacy helps us find healthy outlets for death drive. All of Pleeb's work has been de-monetized and self-funded for over a year. Our obsession with metrics is causing damage across the board, from education and medicine, to the police, military, and foreign aid. But our guest says we can at least begin to fix the problem.Jerry Muller is professor of history at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he is a professor of history. He is the author of five books, including “Capitalism and the Jews”, “The Tyranny of Metrics,” and “The Mind and the Market: Capitalism in European Thought.” His current work focuses on the border between history, social science, philosophy, and public policy. He chats with Greg in this episode about measurability bias, metric fixation, how metrics have made baseball more boring, and surgical report cards.Episode Quotes:On metric fixationSo one of the problems with what I call metric fixation is the belief that since you are measuring in a standardized way, you are engaged in an objective scientific activity. And therefore it tends to militate against humility. That is to say, it gives you too much confidence in the metrics. Because after all you're doing science, and the other guy or gal, she's just working on her, gut or on her intuition around her so-called judgment. But I've got hard numbers and hard numbers are, that's what sent people into space. So they're going to help me figure out if this product that I have is going to work in the marketplace.Standardized metrics: Again, I can't say it often enough, standardized metrics do have a positive role. They mitigate against various kinds of prejudice and against some kinds of biases. But when you put those metrics together with reward and punishment and transparency, you often get all kinds of dysfunctions.Multifactor metrics & judgment:The more metrics you have, the more employee and management time is being put into measuring as opposed to doing. And especially since good metrics require input from the practitioners themselves, because they're actually more likely to know what's important and what's not. So it's good to have their input, but again that takes some of their time. So there's a real tension between doing and measuring and coming up with the metrics and then producing the metrics and then analyzing the metrics. Joshua Citarella is an artist and researcher whose work focuses on the fringe political groups developing in cyberspace. I love his work, partially because it's a reminder to me that there's more to Internet politics than the Dissident Right. In fact, talking to Joshua was good reminder in general of the vastness of cyberspace. For me, I always think of it through the lenses of Twitter, Tumblr, and TikTok. Certain podcasts. Journalists. But there's a whole other ecosystem on YouTube, Twitch, and Instagram. It got me thinking about two things: Fans don't always mean influence, and influence doesn't always mean fans. Influence and fans don't always mean you'll be familiar with either group. We talked about a lot, more than just the terrain of online life. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much I did.Theme: The Robots by KraftworkProduced by Will Kraus
WACA's Cover to Cover webinar on Thursday, October 28, at 2:00-3:00 PM ET, features Carla Power, journalist and author. In Home, Land, Security: Deradicalization and the Journey Back from Extremism, Carla Power wanted to chip away at the stereotypes by focusing not on what radicalized young people had done but why: What drew them into militancy? Summary from Penguin Randomhouse. The discuss will be moderated by Patrick Ryan, President of the Tennessee World Affairs Council.

Does the left coalition build and work to deradicalize white supremacist and neo-nazis? Or should nazis be run out of town, with force if necessary? Also: Matt discusses how he has recently been unfairly demonetized by YouTube but how this mistake by the company does not mean censorship. On the patron half of the show: It's BONUS episode #100! Saul was a violent radical. On the road to Damascus, Saul encountered Christ and was transformed. He became the Apostle Paul, and played an integral role in the formation of the early church. Not far from Damascus today, this narrative is playing out again and again. To learn about modern-day Pauline conversions, we interviewed Scott Gustafson. Scott is researching the world-view change phenomenon among former Muslim refugees in Lebanon and the Levant and the deradicalization of some violent extremists among them. Scott has extensive experience in the Middle East as a practitioner and consultant with faith-based charities and churches in humanitarian relief and mission work. He has lived and worked in the region for nearly 20 years. To explore further our episode topic, we invite you to read Scott's articles: Preventing That Which We Fear: The Church's Role in Countering Radicalization, in Evangelical Missions Quarterly; A Case for Missiological Engagement in Counter/Deradicalization, in the Journal for Deradicalization in the Winter 2020/2021; Short articles by Scott on Acts211.org.
