The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 227: Is Pain During Yoga Okay? with Neil Pearson Description: As yoga teachers, we may have guided students to avoid all movements that cause any amount of pain, particularly for students who may be dealing with injuries or issues in their bodies. However, is this necessary and is pain always a bad thing? Neil Pearson sheds light on what pain science has to say about pain, and how to approach pain in yoga. Neil Pearson is a physiotherapist, yoga therapist, educator and author. He is also the Founder of Pain Care Aware, a yoga mentorship program that focuses on a pain-informed approach to teaching yoga, and Pain Care U, which offers practical, effective, non-pharmacological pain care for people living in pain. Additionally, Niel provides education to PTs, MDs, and yoga therapists, as well as serves as a consultant to Canada's largest rehab clinic group and pain advocacy groups. He focuses on teaching about pain science, the lived experience of pain, and the intersection of pain science and yoga, with the goal of helping people living in pain and assisting others with the same desire to serve. Neil answers some common questions around pain during yoga, including whether sharp pain is okay, how and when we can know that it is safe to explore the edges of pain, and if pain is really just all in our heads. If you are experiencing pain, or have students with pain, this is a powerful interview to listen to. Key Takeaways: [7:54] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Neil Pearson. [9:19] Neil talks about the idea that pain is a taboo topic. [10:59] What is the work that Neil does and who does he do it for? [12:24] How did Neil start integrating pain science into his work? [17:19] What should yoga teachers do for people who are feeling pain? [22:56] Many times in yoga classes, we encourage students not to do things that cause pain. What are Neil's thoughts on that? [32:05] Neil talks more about the common belief that discomfort is okay, but sharp pain is not okay. [34:24] Shannon and Neil discuss how determining causes of pain can be frustrating because it is influenced by many factors and is very changeable. [38:38] Neil and Shannon discuss her experience recovering from a herniated disc recently, and how each person is an expert in their pain. [44:18] As yoga teachers, how can we know if pain is caused by tissue damage? Neil explains the buffer between pain and damage, and how we can tap into that. [46:23] Neil shares a bit more about movement guidelines, and how we can pay attention to four alarm systems in our bodies to know if a movement is safe. [50:50] Neil talks about his work teaching people about pain science and the new training for yoga teachers around pain. [53:48] Neil shares his hope that this training will help yoga teachers give people a different lived experience around pain. Description: As the Cold War kicked off in the late 1940s, America was rocked by revelations that hundreds of Soviet spies had somehow entrenched themselves in the highest levels of the government. When Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy took the lead in exposing them, he kicked a hornet's nest that soon swarmed and overwhelmed him. The period known as the "Red Scare" is a complex time in American history, and Senator McCarthy was a complex man with ambivalent personal motivations. Unfortunately, the hornets he agitated included the political press and academic establishment, who for decades worked to wash away the complexities of the man and the era. The popular political cartoonist Jules Feiffer once wrote that "the secret to good cartooning is hate." Not personal hate, he clarified, but professional hate: "the intensity of conviction that comes to a craftsman's work when he has made the decision to kill, the decision to shun all political and behavioral complexities, so that the subject becomes, purely and simply, a demon."

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 199: Creating Inclusive Yoga Spaces with Erin Ajayi Description: As yoga teachers, many of us have the intention of creating inclusive yoga spaces. However, we may not know what that looks like or feels like from the perspective of a BIPOC yoga student. Erin Ajayi joins Shannon in this episode to experience her own experience of being a yoga student of color (from the perspective of a Black woman). Erin Ajayi is the Senior Director of Development at I Live Here I Give Here, a nonprofit organization with the mission to make Central Texas the most generous community in the nation. Erin is also a part-time yoga teacher who has taught in studio spaces, and college and university spaces. Erin came to yoga as a result of a running injury but since then, her relationship with yoga has evolved. Today, Erin teaches restorative yoga "to help her students show up to the moments in their lives." Erin also opens up about some of the adverse personal experiences she has had within the yoga world and shares some deep insights about how mainstream yoga perpetuates exclusion, or even racism. She also has some suggestions on what inclusive practices studios and practitioners can adopt as alternatives, and how yoga teachers and studios can hold space and give voice to this marginalized group within our community. Key Takeaways: [6:02] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Erin Ajayi. [7:37] What was Erin's yoga journey and how did she get into teaching yoga? [10:20] How did Erin and her mom do yoga together? [11:10] What is the work that Erin does now, and who does she do it for? [12:51] How does Erin feel about the fact that the world is finally waking up to the idea of creating inclusive spaces for BIPOC? [15:15] What are some of the things Erin wishes yoga teachers were more aware of? [18:31] How can we be more inclusive in our greetings to our students to make everyone, across the board, feel welcome. [20:28] Shannon and Erin discuss the defensiveness that yoga teachers may feel when confronted with anecdotes of BIPOC being othered. [23:36] How can we invite more Black people and other vulnerable populations into our yoga classes? [26:59] People are becoming more conscious of representation and the current global situation has opened up possibilities to connect with people of all different backgrounds, modalities, etc. [29:15] How can we connect with people from marginalized groups in an authentic way? [33:28] What are some other instances in which Erin felt uncomfortable as a Black yoga student? [36:46] Shannon wonders if giving a discount to BIPOC would help draw them in to events or festivals or studios. [40:21] There is no quick fix to this situation. Erin shares some strategies for yoga teachers to create more inclusive spaces. [43:19] Erin has some other suggestions of things that yoga teachers and studios can consider. DESCRIPTION: As the U.S.federal election approaches, many are worried that we’re losing the battle for the heart of America. However, what’s being commonly heard from the Left and in the media isn’t necessarily true. In this episode, Dan Sullivan and Mark Young predict how the election is really going to go and how the long-standing structures of the Democratic Party might be set to collapse. SHOW NOTES: Two sides: The outcome of the upcoming election will be an exhilarating win on one side and a demoralizing loss on the other. Haven’t responded: The people who haven’t responded in polls are probably voting for Trump, but it can be dangerous to say you’re doing that. Structures collapsing: We could see a collapse in the structures of the Democratic Party akin to the fall of the wall in the Soviet Union. Angered out: If Trump wins, it might be that the Left and the mainstream media will be out of anger and fall into a severe depression. Broke tradition: President Obama broke the tradition of peacefully handing over power. Projecting fear: Everything the Democrats say we should worry about regarding Trump are actually things we should worry about regarding the Democrats. Psychological warfare: The media in America today is propaganda, engaging in psychological warfare on Americans. More leaders: The Republicans are probably always developing about three times more political leaders than the Democrats. Mass movement: Current events are going to result in many people moving out of their cities, or even out of their states. Conservative analyzing: Conservative people analyze while left-wing people feel. Democratic leadership: The cities that are having problems with police right now are all ones with Democratic leadership

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Ep 146: How to Empower Your Yoga Students with Yonnie Fung Description: As yoga teachers, we want our classrooms to be safe spaces that empower our students and maximise their choice, but this may not always be the case. People may come to our classes wanting us to tell them what to do and trust that it's our job to know better, and also, some practices in yoga may erode empowerment, take away student agency, and undermine safety. Yonnie Fung recently wrote an article on this topic, and what it means to teach inclusive, safe and ethical yoga. She is the founder of Yoga with Yonnie, an award winning yoga and movement space in Beijing that focuses on small classes, non-commercialism, integrity and cultivating real human connections. Yonnie values a collaborative learning environment over an authoritative styles, and seeks to help students and clients in discovering what they need to feel well and whole. Some common practices in modern yoga fall short of what we want to achieve. Yonnie and Shannon dive into why replicating inherited behaviours and practices from past generations may not necessarily be appropriate, and how yoga teachers can move away from dis-empowering their students. This episode is in no way about shame and blame. We often look back at the things we could have done differently as newer yoga teachers, and that work is sometimes uncomfortable. Listen in if you would like to learn more about how we can move forward as yoga teachers to empower our students and increase their agency in our classrooms. Key Takeaways: [4:59] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Yonnie Fung. [6:15] Where did Yonnie's journey with yoga begin? [9:44] What made Yonnie decide to become a yoga teacher? [12:05] What is the work that Yonnie does now? [18:53] What prompted Yonnie to write her list of how we might be unintentionally harming our yoga students? [23:16] Did Yonnie expect her article to go viral? She shares her experience with publishing her article. [25:36] How did Yonnie develop her list? [26:21] Shannon highlights some of the things that stood out to her from Yonnie's list. [26:43] One of the items on Yonnie's list is participating in power structures. Shannon and Yonnie discuss the power dynamic that exists in a yoga class. [34:06] Yonnie shares a powerful experience she had during her yoga teacher training that has influenced her way of teaching yoga. [37:37] It is a common thread in many settings where the teacher is expected to know the student better than the student knows themselves! [38:26] This week's hot top from Schedulicity! [39:15] Yonnie highlights how teachers making adjustments to students' postures is not empowering. [41:28] What are some of the ways that yoga teachers can move away from dis-empowering their students? Yonnie highlights how the language that we use can be the simplest place to start changing. [48:37] What is Yonnie's response to yoga teachers who want to say as few words as possible in their classes? [50:10] It can be challenging for students to learn how to listen to their body. Yonnie explains more about interoception and how this ties in with trauma and yoga. [53:45] Yonnie and Shannon talk through an example of how this might play out in a class. [57:19] It takes a lot of pressure off the teacher if we understand and accept that the students are the experts of their own bodies. [1:02:01] Yonnie has subsequent follow-up articles that she has written on this topic. [1:05:26] Get in touch with Yonnie via her website or on Facebook. The message was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION As agnostics, atheists and humanists, it feels so good to let go of inherited or culturally imposed beliefs about a punishing God, and to embrace our inherent worth and dignity. The next step – which sometimes lasts a lifetime - is a struggle to accept our human responsibility for evil in the world. This Sunday we will explore the principle and practice of non-harm as a response to modern day evils. Primum non nocere, first do no harm, is central in the Hippocratic oath taken by physicians, in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, and in the yoga sutras. If you were to practice non-harm for a month, a week, or a day …. how would your choices change? Let’s move from a place of ordinary to that of extraordinary, as we move toward intentional sacredness in our lives. With these summer months comes a sense of transition. With sabbaticals and vacations, we return refreshed. How quickly that feeling diminishes, as we return to our daily schedules and practices; the daily grind! WhiteSpace provides us with the opportunity to return refreshed, and continue to feel refreshed, with the new year before us. ABOUT Rabbi Michael Weinstein assumed the role of Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel in July of 2018, when he moved to Tulsa with his family. Michael was ordained as Rabbi in 2010. Rabbi Weinstein has served congregations in the greater Boston, Atlanta, and Washington DC communities, in addition to spending time working in the Jewish Day School and Jewish Federation environments. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 30, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION As a boy I used to wish I had the power to become invisible. Some people in our society feel invisible and when they are seen, other people often wish they were not. Walking in another’s shoes is not really possible in every situation. I decided to spend a night in a homeless shelter and some time on the streets with people who do not have homes in our community. I certainly cannot say I experienced what it is like to be homeless. Yet, I’ll share what I did experience and what it taught me about life, belonging, community and home. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION As we celebrate graduates this Sunday, there is something to be said about living our truth, post-graduation. High school grads will step into the world as their true selves, finding their way. Older grads will embark on their genuine paths. I charge our grads and community to stay fluid and flexible us room to grow and learn. Staying fluid and flexible enables us to influence and even change truth as we know it, experience it and perceive it. That’s what fascinates me most about the concept to truth. It’s malleable to our own understanding and relationship with it. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 30, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald L. Davis, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION As we end this year seeking peace and expecting grace, may we understand we have a role to play in this equation. Peace comes from Justice and Grace is assured. But, if you consider that the odds against achieving a peaceful and graceful world are greater than any useful fiction you may hold, then you're missing the whole point. The message was delivered on Sunday, December 2, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION As we begin the December theme of “Peace," I ask myself if peace is an inner state or an outer reality. In Thich Nhat Hanh's book Being Peace, the Vietnamese Buddhist monk shares about watching monks burn themselves in the middle of the street to protest war. Had those monks found inner peace? If so, does such peace seem achievable or even worthwhile? What is true peace? I want to discuss how we might find our own peace in these turbulent times. Music: Sheri Scales-Neubauer, violin; Rick Fortner, piano. Yet despite this gift, Renee¹s heart felt unfulfilled. Struggling to find contentment, she began listening more closely as God spoke to her in new ways. Guest: Jason White, Global Account Director, Nike at Wieden + Kennedy (WK) Topic: Globalization and How agencies and clients need to prepare for this shift Description: As more and more clients push into foreign markets to achieve growth, agencies and clients alike have to consider the best strategy for expansion. The pros and cons to each decision can seem endless. Topics of debate include localization vs. centralization, local knowledge vs. global savvy, and the increasingly difficult matter of evaluating talent across foreign languages and varying cultural paradigms. Our discussion will focus on his experiences in China and with WK's international brands, but I hope the lessons I've learned can be helpful to anyone trying to manage a business in today's global environment.
