Nat proudly represented Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games where she placed 5th (with a ruptured ACL). Nat now have my sights set on qualifying and competing on the 31st July, at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.Nat recently competed at the first event of the 2024 Olympic qualifier series held in Shanghai, China. The second Olympic qualifier event is in Budapest, Hungary 20-23 June. Qualification is earned by a combination of points over the two events or selection by a National Olympic Committee of a qualified country (Australia is a qualified nation) As well as qualifying for Paris 2024, Nat have also been invited to compete at X-Games in Ventura California this year, on the 27- 30 of June. This will be the first X-Games in which women have been invited to compete in their own BMX Freestyle event. This is a huge honour for Nat, as history is being made. Nat strongly believes that this will highlight to the younger generation of girls that they can do anything and prove that there is a pathway in this sport to both the Olympics and X Games! From leaving Vancouver, heading south to Ventura California, pivoting Tight Club from an incredible in person fitness studio to a dynamic online community, and ultimately saying goodbye to it as an official offering. Keighty is someone who embraces change, and walks boldly into the phases of her life with purpose, and passion and often brings others along for the ride. And fun is always had! We feel so grateful to have shared space with Keighty, and to have heard her story laid out in such distinct and unique chapters. Including a rather frightening turn of events where Keighty shares about having a stroke, and how that affected her and how she is now on her journey to health and restoring movement in her life. If you're someone who was touched by Tight Club in any or all of its iterations, if you know Keighty, or simply if you want to be inspired around building community, fitness, overcoming struggles and facing the unknown, you will love this conversation! The Tell-Tale heart by Edgar Allen Poe was written in 1843.  Born in 1809 to two actor parents, Poe was pretty much guaranteed a life of poverty and hardship.  His actor father abandoned the family when he was young and then his mother died soon after. He was fostered to the Allens, a wealthy family living in West Virginia.  Poe's foster father alternated between spoiling young Poe and disciplining him harshly. Allen never formally adopted Poe and when Poe became a young man, Allen disowned him entirely. Do these 'Daddy issues' make their way into the story of the Tell-Tale Heart? You be the judge. Note too that relationship between the story's narrator and the old man is never clarified. Support the showThank you for listening! Sorry Wrong Number is another superb audio drama written by Lucille Fletcher. It first aired on the Suspense Radio Program in  1943. Orson Welles called Sorry Wrong Number, "the single greatest radio script ever written." The story idea came to Fletcher while she was in a grocery story on Manhattan's lower east side. There, she noticed a well-dressed woman with an obnoxious manner in the line-up. This unpleasant woman was the inspiration for the character of Mrs Stevenson. What dark fantasies was Lucille Fletcher having in that grocery story line-up, while she waited to pay for her bread, milk and a dozen eggs?Co-hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn talk about the amazing voice performances by Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster, as well as the creepy music by Bernard Herrmann, and other audio drama trivia.  Listen now!Thank you for listening! Clint grew up in Montana in a rural area. His job as a child was to watch their cows and make sure that they were healthy and separate the ones that may be sick, but to also make sure the grass wasn't too short and the weeds too high. Throughout his whole life he has always looked at things in a way to figure out what caused it to happen. He left that job when he was young and went into the communications industry and helped develop the cable television industry in the hills of Montana. In that industry he learned about electrical stability to deliver a clean picture to the residents. Even in this industry he learned that everything had to be grounded in order to have electrical stability. He spent about 30 years in that industry. When he turned 50 he retired from that industry and was living in Evergreen Colorado on a mountain. He ended up having a major health issue about that time and as he recovered from it he didn't want to go back to conventional work. He wanted to do something with more value. After this health issue he decided that he did not want to own anything so he gave everything away and bought a small RV and spent 4 years traveling around the US. He ended up in Sedona Arizona and spent 2 years there. While there he ended up thinking, “ I wonder if there is a consequence to humans no longer being naturally grounded, connected to the earth?”  He took a big interest in that and started to do a study by grounding himself outside and then walking in the house and seeing what electrical charges happened. He eventually moved to Ventura California and started to do research with a couple students to do more research on earthing and how it affects the body.   In this episode Clint discusses: How earthing affects humans and animals How long should you be earthing per day How earthing can help indoor pets specifically Suggestions of how to help your pet earth Clint's Links: Products:  www.earthing.com https://www.amazon.com/Earthing-Most-Important-Health-Discovery-ebook/dp/B01BHBPR26?ref_=ast_author_dp Youtube:  https://youtu.be/44ddtR0XDVU Education: https://earthinginstitute.net/   Autumn's Links: Website: https://www.autumnacresminipetpigs.com/ Email: Autumn@autumnacresminipetpigs.com Educational Membership Group: https://www.autumnacresminipetpigs.com/support-group-subscription/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/autumnacresminipetpigs/ Facebook:  HTTP://Facebook.com/autumnacresminipetpigs Mighty Networks: https://autumn-acres-mini-pet-pigs.mn.co/share/EPW2Ie5isMX4T0Ve YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCGue5Kp5AwOXkReCGPUyImA Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hDNizT

The Old Dingy Jukebox

The Old Dingy Jukebox

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2020 108:04

Today’s show of the Old Dingy Jukebox is a special themed one. This episode is a collection of songs that tell stories of past events or people; stories that in one way or another were marginalized, censored, sanitized, or buried, often because they dealt with histories considered too traumatic, contentious, or even a threat to those in power. Overall, the songs in today’s episode all recount histories that survived—or that were preserved and retold—through music, when they might have otherwise disappeared. The idea for this episode came from my friend Cheryl Jimenez Frei, who is an assistant professor of history at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Dr. Frei used to live in Ventura California, while she was working on her PhD in history at the University of California Santa Barbara. I have talked on the show before about some of the origins of the Old Dingy Jukebox, with record listening parties my good friend Matt Sayles and I would have. As Matt’s wife, Cheryl would often get roped into our listening sessions too, and as a historian, she started up a conversation about songs as primary sources that can tell us a lot about the moment in which they were created. That conversation led to a lesson plan she put together for a public history course she was teaching at UCSB at the time, focusing on how folk music, in many senses, has served as an archive—a people’s archive—preserving events, subjects, and stories that have been absent or silenced in “official” histories or records. Cheryl invited both Matt and I to give a guest lecture and play a few tunes for that class, and now a few years later, this episode is an extension of those conversations about folk music, public history, and memory. Many people might think of folk music as only a US-American tradition, but the style and tradition exists in some form or another in countries all over the world. And in and in all of those places, music does the same: preserving the stories of the people. This episode reflects that diversity, with songs from Mexico, Chile, Ireland, and the US. Both Cheryl and Matt are guests on this episode so sit back and enjoy this history centered episode of the Old Dingy Jukebox: A People’s Archive: Buried Stories, Radical Histories, and Folk musicDonate to the podcast: https://paypal.me/christiangallo1?locale.x=en_USE-mail: olddingyjukebox@gmail.comWeb: https://olddingyjukebox.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/olddingyjukeboxpodcastInstagram: @olddingyjukeboxpodcastSupport the show (https://paypal.me/christiangallo1?locale.x=en_US)

Listen and learn about how the Thomas Fire in December of 2017, helped them refine their crisis communications plan and prepare for future crises such as the pandemic that we face today. "I think another key component through all of this is being willing to adapt and change. Even as a marketer, to focus so inward on residents is not something I'm used to, but it's the right thing to do. I think it's just being adaptable and knowing what can we do to help our community." -Cheryl Bagby "We really feel united and in order for our community to be united, we as leaders in the community have to be that way. I think that we're leading by example more so in this crisis than we did the last one, but both are very important." -Marlyss Auster

This week we hit the beach for a most excellent time with the band as they play the Sunday show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura California on July 22, 1984.  This is a fine recording of a very energetic set which I am sure you'll enjoy. We start appropriately enough, with 'Dancin' In the Streets' - a better than average version in my opinion. The boys keep rockin' with 'Bertha'. Weir brings out 'My Brother Esau' - which debuted back in '83 but wouldn't be released until 'In The Dark' in '87. A powerful 'Loser' follows, and its not an exaggeration to claim this is probably the best version of this tune this year, at least. Jerry keeps up the voltage in 'Ramble on Rose', another highlight. Bucket into the infamous 'Keep Your Day Job' follows to close the set.. I must say hearing 'Day Job' again brought a smile to my face.       Grateful Dead Ventura County Fairgrounds Ventura, CA 7/22/84 - Sunday     posters     One     Dancing In The Street [9:01] > Bertha [6:20] ; My Brother Esau [4:43] ; Loser [7:01] ; Cassidy [5:52] ; Ramble On Rose [7:27] ; Hell In A Bucket [6:20] > Keep Your Day Job [4:23]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod073120.mp3   My thanks for your kind support which keeps the Deadpod alive.    "Shadowboxing the apocalypse Wandering the land"

End Hype: Product Entrepreneurship For Impact

We hear little sayings like, “the riches are in the niches”.Why are niches good? How do you find profitable niches for products? And perhaps most importantly ...What the hell is a niche? When thought leaders say find your niche they usually mean a niche market. They mean find the place where your product fits. Niche means products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population. Here is a more human approach to understanding the power of niche markets. In the past, even the recent past, groups of people were lumped geographically and could be sectioned with demographics such as age or gender. Groups of people were more homogeneous. Groups of people were reasonably the same. People had limited access to outside information and products. A town might have had a couple of stores. People's interest and desires were very localized. Word of mouth was manual but generally how trends moved. Changes happened but more slowly.Mass media evolving from print to Radio to TV sped up the spread of information. Companies could push products en masse to the population. The Internet, especially in its current state, broke everything and gave us massive opportunity.Mass communication allows culture, interests, and associations to flow across geographic regions. Your musical interests may have more in common with a 15 year old in Ventura California than your neighbor. More importantly, due to the Internet, we now can connect with people of similar interests with ease. These interests form communities accessible through social media. People are connected in previously impossible ways. People identify themselves through these networks. We call the type of communities … tribes

031 The Case of Confusing Lupus Diagnosis w/ Dr. Tiffany Caplan

Health Mysteries Solved

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2019 36:33

The Case:  Miranda is 42 She was experiencing rashes on her face and chest, joint pain, and fatigue. A dermatologist prescribed antihistamines and a Physical therapist gave her exercises for the joint pain.  There was no explanation or treatment for the fatigue. Miranda’s doctor responded to her condition the way many do - by ruling out the obvious (in this case, arthritis) and then treating the symptoms. More blood tests revealed the presence of ANA or anti nuclear antibody. This indicated that it could be Lupus but it could also not be Lupus. After months of waiting to see her rheumatologist the Lupus diagnosis was confirmed. But, her health mystery still hadn’t been solved because the root cause was still unknown.   The Investigation An estimated 5 million people worldwide have Lupus, and about 1.5 million of them are in the United States. Dr. Tiffany Caplan is a chiropractic physician and a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner who specializes in treating Lupus patients. She, along with her husband Dr. Brent Caplan founded the Central Coast Center for Integrative Health in Ventura California and wrote the book “The Lupus Solution”. On this episode of Health Mysteries Solved, Dr. Tiffany shares her knowledge in relation to Miranda’s case.    What is Lupus? Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects an estimated 5 million people around the world, although Dr. Tiffany feels this is an underestimation because the disease is very difficult to diagnose.  Lupus is more likely to affect women (90 percent of all Lupus patients are female) and it is usually diagnosed during their childbearing years. Because Lupus is so hard to diagnose, it can be years of dealing with symptoms before a patient gets a diagnosis.   Common Symptoms of Lupus The most common (and telltale) symptom is a butterfly-shaped rash on the face. While not all patients present with this rash, when someone does have it, it is a good indication of Lupus. Other symptoms may include fatigue, pain (joint-pain, body-aches, general achiness), stomach pain and/or nausea, headaches, photo-sensitvity, mouth ulcers, and/or acne. Lupus can sometimes occur in conjunction with other autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s, Sjorgren’s, or Raynaud’s disease, which means that symptoms associated with these diseases can also be symptoms of Lupus.    The Difficulty of Diagnosing Lupus Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease so it can attack different parts of the body, in different ways, at different times which makes it hard to connect the dots. There are 11 different criteria that are considered in diagnosing Lupus but not all of these need to be satisfied for it to be Lupus. Other diagnoses (like Hashimoto’s or kidney disease) might come first and end the search for the real cause as symptoms are lumped into that single diagnosis. Typically, it takes about seven years for someone to be diagnosed with Lupus.    How Lupus is Diagnosed In addition to considering the clinical criteria (symptoms), there are a variety of lab tests that can help confirm a Lupus diagnosis. A DNA test could reveal an anti-double-stranded DNA marker which is present in about 80% of Lupus patients. A positive test for anti-Smith antibody and various antiphospholipid antibodies that are present in about 30% of lupus patients that can also be indicators. Doctors may also test the function of the immune system function by looking at complement c3 and complement c4 levels through blood tests.   Treating Lupus Traditionally Most conventional doctors will deal with Lupus by prescribing immunosuppressants (since the immune system is overactive). They may also prescribe medication to treat the other symptoms such as antidepressants, pain medication, and/or sleep medication. However, a functional medicine approach to treating lupus doesn’t focus on treating the symptoms but rather getting to the root cause.    The Root Cause of Lupus Each patient is going to be different, but the most common root causes of Lupus flare-ups involve gut issues (80% of your immune system lives in your gut), exposure to toxins or chemicals, and nutrient deficiencies (especially vitamin D, Omega 3s and Glutathione. Additionally, hormone imbalances, adrenal fatigue, and emotional or mental health issues can also be triggers for Lupus.   Holistic Approach to Treating Lupus The first move Dr. Tiffany makes when working with a Lupus patient is to put them on an elimination diet. This will help identify the role various foods might be playing in Lupus symptoms - especially inflammation. Some doctors also recommend cutting out alfalfa sprouts, bean sprouts and even garlic as these can cause issues for Lupus patients.  Repairing a leaky gut and/or resetting the gut microbiome can be essential in treating Lupus holistically. Test for parasites or enzyme deficiencies will also help fill in the picture of what’s going on. Further test on cortisol levels will help determine if stress is a potential factor.    Vitamin D Deficiency Dr. Tiffany says that most people are deficient in vitamin D and it’s really important to correct that. Even if tests show that you are in the ‘normal range’ (which is very wide). In the US, the range is usually about 30 to 100 which means that you could be at 31 and be considered in the norm. But,that is very low and ideally, especially for someone who has autoimmunity, those readings should be more towards 50, 60 even 70.    Hope for People with Lupus Dr. Tiffany is passionate about helping patients with Lupus who have been told that they should get used to living with symptoms and expect to take medications for the rest of their lives. She’s seen diet and lifestyle changes result in patients getting off those drugs and feeling much better. Lupus does not have to mean a lifetime of pain and chronically feeling unwell. And, remember to listen to your body - trust your gut. If you suspect there is something bigger going on beyond the symptoms, advocate for your own health and demand to have your health mystery solved.    Mystery Solved Miranda’s Lupus diagnosis left her feeling hopeless and helpless. But, we spent some time finding the root cause of the issues. We started by cleaning up her diet. Food sensitivity tests revealed that she had issues with corn and dairy. We also removed sugar and gluten from her diet. These dietary shifts made a huge difference - her rash got dramatically better and she was thinking clearer again. But, we weren’t done yet. Further testing showed that she was dealing with an active Epstein Barr Virus so we got her on an antiviral protocol which included Lysine, NAC, Selenium and Zinc along with Monolaurin Avail. After 5 weeks on the protocol she started to get her energy back. Test revealed that her immune system was functioning better so we put Miranda on a maintenance protocol including a good quality multivitamin (the DFH Complete Multi) and good quality Omega (omega avail ultra) as well as a supplement to balanced the immune system called Immune Mod A. Finally, we optimized her vitamin D with Vitamin D supreme and added glutathione as it is a wonderful immune balancer.    Happy Ending Miranda was thrilled that we were able to get her feeling better without steroids and other immune suppression drugs. Every person is different, so remember that what worked for Miranda might not work for other Lupus patients. Each patient will have to get to their own root cause and solve their own mystery. But, the answers are out there and there is hope!   Eliminating Health Mysteries Lupus is a scary and sometimes frustrating diagnosis. For Miranda, we found the various contributing factors and were able to put the whole puzzle together. Visit www.thestudioventura.com to learn more.  Day 4's Episode is all about exercise, which you KNOW is good for you and you KNOW is an important component of this challenge.  PLUS: There's a secret phrase in this episode so make sure you listen closely.  Helya's friend Uri helped make the Studio's logo. Here is his Instagram. Follow the Healthy Habits challenge and Fit n Busy on Instagram. Comment your phrase on @FitN_Busy and keep that energy high. Share pictures of your healthy meals, your view from a wilderness hike, your sweat after a class and don't forget to hashtag #fitnbusy and #healthyhabits whenever you want us to see your progress.    Here are the questions you'll ask yourself daily, earning a point with each one: 1. Did you take a class at the studio?  You don't get extra points for taking two. Save your body and the time. 2. Did you eat vegetables 3 times today? (3 Servings or 3 cups. Try one cup at every meal. Don't cheat. One stick of celery is not a serving!) 3. Did you get at least 7 hours of sleep? Not 6. Not naps, 7 full hours a night.  4. Did you avoid alcohol today? Self explanatory. 5. Did you give yourself 10 minutes of stretching today?  It doesn't have to be all at once. If you do 5 minutes in the morning 5 minutes after your class, you're killing it.

In my opinion this is a fine second set, highlighted by a very nice drums/space into the Wheel, then a rare Cryptical into a very jammy Other One. That is followed by a particularly touching 'Comes A Time', always a favorite. While there may be better versions, I think this set stands up to scrutiny as the boys put out some great energy in this second set. They close with the summertime favorite 'U.S. Blues'.     Ventura County Fairgrounds, Ventura, CA (7/13/85) Touch of Grey Man Smart/Woman Smarter Terrapin Station drums The Wheel Cryptical Envelopment The Other One Comes a Time Around and Around Sugar Magnolia U.S. Blues   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071814.mp3   Thank you for listening, and for your support - I really appreciate it!  If you could consider helping to support the Deadpod, please click on the 'Donate' button on the right hand side of this page.. thank you!
