In this interview Jed is going to talk about different ways we can publish students work, student podcasting, the power of learning from others, and so much more.Topics:The new 4 C's : Connect, compassion, culture, and climateInnovation sometimes is nothing more than giving a kid what they need at the right time.Find activities that are meaningful, memorable, and also measurable - if those connect you find lessons that are innovativeThink beyond the bulletin board - what are different ways that students can demonstrate their learningWhen you can capture a students voice on a podcast and parents can listen with a click of a button that is pretty transformational.Student podcasting allows transfer of learning. Justification of ideas, persuasive thinking, debate skills, etc. Through student podcasting you give a window into your classroom. Share thinking to others outside of your classroom. It makes students engage with learning differently.Teachers should give them more credit then they do about how flexible they truly were.Coaching T Cycle - time, talk, teach, try, think, and tweakSet goals that are meaningful and achievableThere's something that we can always learn from a lesson whether it be a great lesson or one that strugglesMake connections and learn from othersFind people in your building. Our buildings are filled with expert teachers that need opportunities to share the amazing things that they are doing. We don't need to be printing to be publishing. Check out his blog at stefanowiczclass@blogspot.com Key Takeaways: We need to recreate the structures to teach rather than just expecting it to happen. Leaders are facing a blank slate as they work to stretch people past their comfort zone because people have been out of their comfort zone for the last two years. Learning something on YouTube is going to teach you how to do it, but not understand how to apply it. We need to find ways to create and support teacher agency. It's essential to be aware of circumstances, surroundings, and how to apply the requisite skills to excel in a situation. Moving people from motivation to commitment is the only way to make progress forward. Education at any level has to go beyond a transactional experience by starting with what people are passionate about. You can't be a coach and equipment manager at the same time. You have to respect where people are to engage them in growth. Leadership isn't about implementing an agenda, but instead finding what the goals of those you serve are and then helping them achieve them. Stick to the A,B,Cs = Always Build Capacity It's about process/project not product. In this episode, I chat with Jed Stefanowicz, a Digital Learning Coach in Walpole, Massachusetts who provides job-embedded professional development and instructional coaching for academic technology. Through conferences, workshops, and coaching, Jed aims to engage and build staff/student digital learning capacity, keeping the focus on practice over product. As a 25 year elementary educator, speaker, blogger, and current Massachusetts Teach Plus Policy Fellow, Jed shares his passion for effective tech integration to transform teaching and learning, creating engaging and equitable digital learning environments and experiences that activate, innovate, and motivate digital learning. He is the Author of Take AIM at Digital Learning: Activate, Innovate, Motivate. Be sure to check out this MassCUE level 4 educator's blog and his band, Little Jed and the Phat Daddies. During our conversation, we addressed some of the myths that have surfaced in education during the pandemic. Will tech replace teaching? How much learning loss have students experienced? We acknowledge that educators are in the process of rediscovering a job that they once loved and the challenges surrounding that journey. To assist with that, Jed points out the need for building a culture that encourages the development of combustible classrooms … yes combustible. We even talk about not only thinking inside and outside of the proverbial box but how we can also rebuild and recycle it. Ready to learn more from this tech guru who can solve a Rubik's cube? He is the Author of Take AIM at Digital Learning: Activate, Innovate, Motivate. Key Takeaways: It's important to take an empathic approach if you are to support all teachers. Building diverse teams is essential to successfully innovating in your school. Learning is the intersection of 3 things and that is what creates activation: meaningful, measurable, and memorable. It's important to prioritize experiences, showcase moments, and highlight events to memorialize student learning. The new four Cs are compassion, connection, culture, and climate. These build motivation and student agency. Drop the D when talking about shared and distributed leadership. Those should not be destinations but instead processes. For example share the leadership, distribute the leadership If kids don't care that's not their problem, it's the teacher's problem. If teachers don't care, that's not the teacher's problem that's the leader's problem. Welcome to Episode 46 of the Canvascasters Podcast today we are "discussing discussions" which is one of the most powerful tools for learning within Canvas LMS! In this episode, we dig into the power of Discussions in K12 and Higher Education, fun ideas to innovate with discussions, and best practices from the experts as we are joined by Melissa Greer & Linda Lee. Melissa Greer began her career as a high school Latin teacher for the Newton College and Career Academy and STEM Institute in Covington, GA., where she, herself, attended growing up. This year she moved into a Digital Learning Coach role where she supports teachers at 3 middle schools. Currently, she is working on getting her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Instructional Technology from Valdosta State University. In her infinite free time (*jokes*) she likes to hang out with her boyfriend and dog, travel, cross stitch, decorate custom cookies, and just be a nerd (listen to podcasts about and play D&D, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, books by Brandon Sanderson, etc.) Linda Lee is a folklorist, educator, and instructional designer. She's the Director of Instructional Design at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where she leads instructional design and training efforts for the IDEA Courseware Team. She came to instructional design by way of adjunct teaching. Welcome to Episode 45 of the Canvascasters Podcast today we are "discussing discussions" which is one of the most powerful tools for learning within Canvas LMS! She's used Canvas as an instructor since 2014 and as an admin since 2015, when she joined Wharton as the school's first instructional designer. Build relationships by listening to needs. Good instructional strategies work for teachers as much as they do for students. Building trust takes authenticity. In this episode, we discuss:STEM/STEAM Coaching How does it differ from other areas? “Where all of the content areas come to play!” Collaborative, don't make it a “drop off and leave” area. Teachers join in, coach/facilitator leads but all participate. This creates buy-in and leaves the teachers wanting more. Bringing items in from all of the content areas and showing teachers and students how it can all come together. Celebrate baby steps with various successes as you go. Look for willing participants. Look for ideas in everyday conversations with teachers and/or staff meetings. Let the ideas develop as colleagues talk with one another and realize ways that they can collaborate. Building A Culture of STEM Integrating STEM and Project-Based Learning that may already be happening in the classroom. Start small and bring the community together, partner with local businesses. Find opportunities to chat with teachers in whatever form that may look like and work for you building. Develop the relationship to find out what is going on in their classroom and what types of project ideas may work well for them. Budgeting For STEM Budget line for each planned project or area Think about consumables that would need to be replaced each year Building Capacity Start a video channel for step by step instructions for teachers to better understand tools and STEM concepts. Share with both teachers and have the availability of appropriate ones for the community. Create a website to feature projects and student work and teacher lesson plan sharing. Crystal Kirch taught high school math in Southern California for seven years before transitioning to a role as a Digital Learning Coach, working with teachers on integrating technology into their classrooms to support student learning. I stumbled across her work all the way back in around 2011 / 2012 as I begun exploring a flipped approach with my classes. At this point in time, Crystal had an amazing blog detailing her flipped learning journey which included a number of great resources that really supported teachers getting started with the approach. Her creation of the WSQ (Watch, summarise, question) sheet provided a framework for teachers allowing them to ensure students were not only watching the videos, but digesting the content as well. More recently, Crystal has released a book titled Flipping with Kirch and can be purchased through Amazon at a very reasonable price! I would definitely recommend picking this book up if the things Crystal talks about during this episode are of interest to you. Please follow Crystal on Twitter (she is a wealth of knowledge) and don't hesitate to jump into our free Introduction to Flipped Learning course over at Augmented Learning.

Today's guest is Robbi Makely. Robbi is a Digital Learning Coach in Colorado's 27J district north of Denver where she supports teachers in two schools to enhance effective technology instruction in classrooms. With today's increased remote learning situation, the sense of urgency among educators to really find and utilize the right tools in order to build strong relationships and support our learners has grown exponentially. Robbi offers advice about how educators can break down the "screen" and keep the emphasis on the right things - strong engagement and effective teaching. She discusses her approach to coaching all educators regardless of their tech-savviness and why she believes it's crucial to build strong connections among adults in a school setting and recognize expertise that educators hold. It was great to talk to Robbi about her human-centered approach and to remember that often the best answer to tackling problems is the simplest one.
In this episode, I'm joined by Tisha Poncio to discuss the differences between Digital Citizenship and Digital Literacy. She's a passionate Digital Learning Coach from Celina ISD and has done some great things with students at that district. In addition to these topics, we also discuss where she goes for donuts while in Austin, Texas. This episode was recorded entirely with a Rode SC6-L and my iPhone. We are in an extremely loud environment but I wanted to put this mic to the test. So tune in and check out what Tisha has to say about Digital Citizenship and Digital Literacy.

Google has been trying to combine the ChromeOS and Android ecosystems since 2016. Is this the future of Chromebooks or a bad idea? While I am a HUGE proponent of Chromebooks, I have been very sluggish to recommend running Android apps on a Chromebook. Here to change my mind about Android apps on Chromebooks is Tom Mullaney, Digital Learning Coach at Carroll Middle School in Raleigh, NC. I have been following Tom on Twitter for some time and have seen him putting out a lot of content on his blog and Twitter on how he is using Android apps on his Chromebook. This should be a solid conversation! Show notes and links: chrmbook.com/podcast

In this session, we will be sharing how to intentionally plan and organize stations that engage students, minimize distractions, and enable the teacher to facilitate and meet individual student needs. Brittany's philosophy is that if we want student-centered, personalized learning in our classrooms, we must first engage teachers in the types of experiences and environments that show them how. This mindset drives her work at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation which is the research arm of the College of Education at NC State University. She has spent the past 6 years learning with and engaging educators in schools and districts across North Carolina who are integrating digital learning into their schools and classrooms. Prior to joining the team at FI, Brittany taught 9th, 11th and 12th grade English and a Young Adult Literature elective in a digitally-enabled classroom at a high school in Wake County, North Carolina. https://twitter.com/amoderneducator (Follow Brittany Miller on Twitter) http://moderneducatormiller.weebly.com/ (Brittany’s website: Digital Learning Coach) http://pllc.fi.ncsu.edu/lbl/ (Leadership in Blended Learning: Leadership in Blended Learning program, a capacity-building program designed to meet the professional learning needs of principals as they transition to digital and blended learning)
