As today's guest Dr. Margie Warrell often says, “ Our biggest problems don't stem from what we cannot do. They stem from not doing all that we can do.” On this episode we discuss the principles in her latest book, “The Courage Gap: 5 Steps to Braver Action.” Challenges confront all of us. Dr. Warrell offers insight into how courage can be summoned leading to lessened fear and insecurity and a brighter, more happy life.
#578: Fear blocks smart money moves. Ask Harvard Business Review advisor Dr. Margie Warrell, who guides Fortune 500 companies through strategic risk-taking. Her client roster includes NASA, Morgan Stanley, and Google. Her understanding of courage started at home. Her 13-year-old daughter landed an Australian TV role. She flew to LA for acting classes. There, she learned the hard truth: Success meant waiting tables for 20 years. The daughter's verdict was clear: "Mum, I don't want it enough." This reveals what Dr. Warrell calls the courage gap. It's the space between your current life and the life you could create through brave action. For investors, this gap appears daily. It's the distance between dreaming of financial independence and taking concrete steps toward building wealth. Drawing on her doctoral research and Fortune 500 consulting experience, Dr. Warrell outlines five critical steps to bridge this gap: 1. Focus on what you want, not what you fear. Our brains have a negativity bias — we're twice as sensitive to potential losses as potential gains. This explains why market downturns feel more intense than upswings. 2. Rewrite your story. The narratives we tell ourselves shape our actions. Perhaps you see yourself as "too risk-averse" to start a business or "not smart enough" to understand investing. Reframe these stories so you can take smart financial risks. 3. Embody courage physically. Fear lives in our bodies — whether it's anxiety about making your first investment or launching a side business. Try simple practices like deep breathing when facing big financial decisions. 4. Step into discomfort. Growth and comfort can't coexist. Every successful investor and entrepreneur started as a beginner. Financial literacy and business acumen develops through consistent practice. 5. Find the treasure when you trip. Market corrections, failed business ventures, and investment mistakes are learning opportunities. Dr. Warrell emphasizes that courage isn't about waiting until you feel confident — it's about acting despite your fears. This applies whether you're making your first stock purchase, buying your first rental property, or quitting your job to start a business. The takeaway: While you can't control market conditions or business outcomes, you can control your response to financial fears. In this week's show we have a short testimonial from my man Warrell. Warrell recently graduated from The Detox Blueprint Program and couldn't be happier. Warrell was on a mission to level up personally and professionally. Despite all his research into detoxing, he was stuck in information overload, exhausted mentally and physically. Sleepless nights, acne, and antibiotics had become his norm. We focused on gut health, water, food quality, and detox pathways. This helped him cut back on meds, and his energy and focus transformed. His story shows the power of removing toxins and letting the body heal itself. Transformations like this are available to anyone ready to take control and do the work. ⏯️ Check out my latest Masterclass: How To Go From Sick To Superman (Masterclass)

Focus on the essentials only, clearly communicate and document everything, streamline the work, and keep the team focused on a common goal. And remember to KISS all the “stuff” that rolls down the hill to stop the avalanche of stuff from overtaking your team. Leading across is to rally your leadership peers by going first in inviting your leader peers to join a conversation in which you share a problem without badmouthing a person, and ask for ideas on a solution. Then as your leader peers begin to feel collaborative or competitive…the conversations can shift to supporting the first team…or the team that has the most pain points. All the sharing of department pain points will reveal even more insights into the true root causes of the chaos throughout the organization. And in Leading up the organization you need to be humble by checking your ego and to have integrity doing the right thing even when it's hard. Before engaging with leaders above you, you need to craft a message that is 1)relevant, 2)concise, and 3) directly tied to the big picture goal of your organizational leaders. Identify your approach for delivering the message to make it relative so you can go for a win-win. An approach that helps your boss win and helps you win So your approach needs to be relevant by being closely connected to what is already being worked on or considered by upper level leaders….in other words, your message needs to be of assistance to a problem they are already working on. And this process starts early with research into finding out how your boss is feeling, what problems they're working on, and what their priorities are. Identify the proposed talking points to make sure your message about the solution to the one problem is concise. Choose one problem to discuss and run it and your proposed solution or strategy through a SWOT analysis or strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Take action to schedule a time to converse with leaders above you and then present one problem, one goal, and one strategy through a 3rd party concept by naming a common enemy that everyone wants to defeat together. It's about Circus Palmer, a struggling 40-something jazz trumpeter in Boston and the women he admires and disappoints. Laura Warrell joins us for a spoiler-free conversation about her jazz-filled, debut novel and the joys of becoming a published author later in life. Read along with us and tell us what you think! Nicole Lewis performs a chorus of voices in this multiperspective story that centers around Circus, a middle-aged jazz musician who has just left his pregnant girlfriend. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss Lewis's skill at creating emotional intimacy for each of the characters. The novel jumps between perspectives, from Circus himself to the many women in his life, including his ex-wife, his daughter, and a seemingly endless string of hookups. With her heartfelt narration, Lewis ensures that listeners will remember these characters long after their story ends. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Laura Warrell's work has appeared in HuffPost, The Rumpus, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications. SWEET, SOFT, PLENTY RHYTHM is her provocative debut novel about the perennial temptations of dangerous love, told by the women who love Circus Palmer—trumpet player and old-school ladies' man—as they ultimately discover the power of their own voices. Now let's join editor Deb Garrison in conversation with author Laura Warrell.
“I feel like very often when we have stories about womanizing characters, whether we piece those stories out, so we see each woman—individually or not, they don't really have stories. They don't really have lives except as they relate to that main character. So, it was always going to be each woman steps forward, each woman gets a chapter.” Laura Warrell takes us behind the scenes of her smart, sharp and deeply resonant debut novel Sweet, Soft, Plenty Rhythm. She joins us on the show to talk about flipping the script, the women she writes about (and letting her characters be who they are), love and loneliness, her writing process and much more with Poured Over's host, Miwa Messer. And we end this episode with TBR Topoff book recommendations from Marc and Becky. Featured Books (Episode): Sweet, Soft, Plenty Rhythm by Laura Warrell Gorilla, My Love by Toni Cade Bambara Featured Books (TBR Topoff): Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell Poured Over is produced and hosted by Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang. Today we recap our interview with the world-renowned advisor on leadership and human potential, Dr. Margie Warrell. Our first big takeaway comes from Dr. Warrell's words, “we tend to fail more from fear and timidity than we do from overdaring.” It is important to treat life as an experiment and not let perfectionism stop us from taking the risks that lead to success! Much of Dr. Warrell's success has come from her willingness to demonstrate her skills for free as a way of convincing people that she is worth paying for, and we explore the value of this approach as our second takeaway. Finally, we speak about the importance of rising above the inner voice inside us all that tells us we are not good enough. It is only by winning against this voice that we can step up to the plate and do the impossible!

Today, I'm talking to Hilary Warrell, who qualified as a Nordic Walking instructor in 2007. Hilary loves being outdoors in nature, and is passionate about sharing all the wellbeing benefits this can bring, particularly in terms of our mental health. Slowing down, pausing, tuning in to our senses helps us connect to life as it is happening in the moment, not just in the environment around us, but in our bodies too. We can start to notice where we habitually hold tension, if we mainly breath through our mouth or nose, how loud we are in conversation, how our feet make contact with the ground....and it is this part of the body that is the subject of this episode. If you want to learn more, Hilary holds zoom workshops on the subject of feet, where she goes into more depth. These workshops are educational and contain many practical tips for mobilizing and strengthening the feet. If you want to sign up, you can email Hilary at hgwarrell@hotmail.co.uk; or you can find her on Facebook at Nordic Walking In The Chilterns, or check out her website, http://nordicwalkingandpilates.comThe course run by Gary Ward that Hilary talked about can be found by visiting his website, Finding Centre, which also has links to other great resources relating to the feet.If you have enjoyed this podcast, I would be very grateful if you could show your support by buying me a coffee! This enables me to continue producing these podcasts, as it will go towards covering the server and podcast platform licenses. Bucks County Sheriff Milt Warrell returns to the Dom Giordano Program to discuss gun licensing, as Bucks County eclipsed other surrounding counties in allocating gun licenses for citizens hoping to practice their 2nd amendment rights. Warrell explains first why it was important to him, even as a Democrat, to supply the public what's needed per their rights. Giordano and Warrell discuss the heightened demand for gun licenses and surrounding crime, and try to determine the reasoning for the higher need for licenses. Then, Warrell and Giordano discuss the recent election, and the pushback that Warrell faced for his moderate policies, with the Democratic party offering a primary candidate against him and essentially running him out of office after refusing to endorse him as their candidate. She battled bulimia all through her teens and later survived an armed robbery and a miscarriage. But Margie Warrell refused to let these crucible experiences define her. She fought her way to a life of significance helping women in particular live authentic lives of unshakable bravery, not battling against external forces but against internal ones. In this interview with Crucible Leadership founder and BEYOND THE CRUCIBLE host (and fellow Aussie) Warwick Fairfax, Warrell describes how she has learned to silence the nagging voice of self-doubt in her head, responding to its taunts of "Who are you to try something like that?" by answering boldly back: "Who am I NOT to try something like that?" Challenging herself, and her self-doubts, so bravely have led her to become a member of the Advisory Board of Forbes School of Business & Technology, an honoree of the Women’s Economic Forum and a sought-after leadership consultant to such organizations as NASA, Johnson & Johnson and Google. Her empowering insights to women, and indeed all people, continue with her latest book, You’ve Got This! The Life-Changing Power of Trusting Yourself, coming from Wiley in March. The historian Conrad Keating continues his history of Oxford's groundbreaking contribution to health in the tropics by asking David Warrell what motivated him to work in Africa... The modern history of Oxford's medical contribution to the great neglected diseases of mankind begins with David Warrell's appointment as Director of the Mahidol-Oxford-Wellcome Unit in Bangkok, Thailand in May, 1979. Tropical research had fascinated Warrell since his time working in Nigeria and Addis Ababa in 1968. Together with his wife Mary, a medical virologist, he was chosen by David Weatherall, the Nuffield Professor of Medicine, to be Oxford's first practitioner of "medicine in the tropics" and he set himself the task of researching the patho-physiology of diseases. Jettisoning a safe, if uninspiring career as a consultant physician at the Radcliffe Infirmary, and supported by a Wellcome grant, he began research on cerebral malaria and the intradermal application of rabies vaccines. Although David Weatherall was unsure as to the Unit's longevity, his initial scepticism was soon dispelled: "David Warrell did an extremely fine job in setting up the unit and I was extremely proud of them all when I saw one of the first papers, the New England Journal of Medicine piece on the positive harm that can be done by treating cerebral malaria with steroids and the advice for its better management; what a wonderful start!" As well as becoming a world authority on snake bites, David Warrell laid the foundations for scientific excellence that Nick White and Nick Day have built upon so successfully in recent years. It was undoubtedly the enormous success of the Bangkok unit that has given rise to the other outstanding units based in Oxford, Vietnam, Laos and Kenya.
