TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of November 13 and November 20, 2023. MUSIC – ~28 sec – Lyrics: “What you gonna do when the river runs dry, when there's no more water in your well?  You won't know when to give it that one last try, you won't be warned before the final bell.” That's part of “River Runs Dry,” by Blacksburg, Va., musician Kat Mills.  The song, in which water sources are metaphors for the songwriter's inspiration, opens a Thanksgiving-season episode featuring expressions of gratitude for literal water sources not running dry.  Here are three such expressions, by people from North America, Vietnam, and Kenya. 1. The Haudenosaunee people, an alliance of six Native American tribes that was formerly known as the Iroquois Confederacy, has a traditional “Thanksgiving Address of Greetings to the Natural World.”  The address includes greetings to 17 aspects of the world, such as people, plants and animals, the moon and stars, winds and thunder, and the creator.  Here's the greeting to The Waters: “We give thanks to all the waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength.  Water is life.  We know its power in many forms- waterfalls and rain, mists and streams, rivers and oceans.  With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the spirit of Water.  Now our minds are one.” 2. Vietnamese spritutal leader Thich Nhat Hanh has written many “gathas,” that is, short reflections or meditations, on daily activities. Here is his gatha for “Turning on the Water.” “Water comes from high mountain sources. Water runs deep in the Earth. Miraculously, water comes to us and sustains all life. My gratitude is filled to the brim.” And 3.  About 10 years ago, a group of Kenyan schoolgirls wrote a poem in gratitude for a newly drilled well in their community.  Here's that poem. Dear water, It was hard to get to you. Waking up at dawn Buckets on our heads Donkeys loaded with jerrycans. Miles we walked In the scorching heat To look for you. Dear water, At last you came. Sweet water Our backs are rested The miles are no more Diseases are gone. For you are closer to us. Dear water, You are such a blessing. One can find countless other expressions of awareness of and gratitude for water's many vital purposes in writings by poets, politicians, professors, prophets, pundits, and plenty of others. For one last, short reading, we return to one of the water metaphors in our opening music, and quote a Benjamin Franklin comment that applies not only to water but also to anything one has and can lose: “When the well's dry, we know the worth of water.” Thanks to people everywhere who know and speak about the worth of water.  Thanks also to Kat Mills for permission to use this episode's music, and—with hope that this won't be the case for you or anyone—we close with about 30 more seconds of “River Runs Dry.”  Happy Thanksgiving!MUSIC - ~30 sec – Lyrics: “What you gonna do when the river runs dry?  Guess I'll have to pack up and leave my home.” SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of “Cripple Creek” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. In this new BONUS episode, we learn from Michael and Sam's failure in expecting staff and students to be able to use technology well beyond their current ability. I also share 3 strategies on Building Capacity vs Enabling Staff.  About Michael Vick: I have been an educator for 12 years. I've been a Digital Learning Coach, Instructional Technology Facilitator, Online Algebra Teacher, 8th Grade Math Teacher, and Special Education Resource Teacher. For the last 7 years, I've been involved with digital learning.  I pride myself on always helping teachers get to the next step in their digital learning journey. Whether that means becoming proficient in a specific digital tool, an idea for making a lesson more meaningful for students, or ways to integrate more technology into the day to day classroom activities - I'm always willing to help however I can.  When I'm not immersed in the digital learning world, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, listening to podcasts, and playing a variety of sports.  Follow Michael Vick: Twitter: @DigitalVick About Sam Shropshire: I have been in education for the past 17 years and have taught in a variety of situations. My first 11 years I spent teaching high school social studies and the last six years I have been involved in digital learning. During my first five years teaching, I also coached boys athletics for the high schools I worked for. I have been in small schools with a population of about 150 to huge schools with a population of about 3,500 and have taught a variety of subjects from World Geography to AP World and US History.  As I integrated more and more technology into my class, I became fascinated with the endless possibilities technology provided my students. Most transformative to me was how technology allowed my students to become the center of the learning process. My desire to encourage that kind of learning environment is what led me into my role in digital learning.  Personally, I have been married to the most amazing wife ever, Katie, since 2009 and we have the two best kids ever, Eva and Cyrus. I live for my family and we do so much for each other. From youth sports to hiking adventures, we have a great life together! Tight, exciting, and on budget. Her first trip to Europe was in 1995. She thought it was going to be one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” adventures. Little did she know, they were just re-orienting their compass and charting a whole new course. Now, after a number of trips to Europe, she lives in Scotland with her favorite travel buddy and 2 travel apprentices.   Shannan loves dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee, red wine, thoughtful conversation, captivating itineraries, and of course, stamps in her passport. When she's not organizing a daytrip or her next week's science or art lesson, you can find her walking a quiet, local path foraging for berries, herbs, and mushrooms while the kids meander, explore, and ask inquisitive questions (these often lead to her next week's science and art lessons!).   Thank you for listening to the A+ Parents podcast. English Speaking - Everyday Geography Terms And Phrases ✔️Get The Full Article: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-geography/ The more you listen to the news, the more you hear about climate change and people speaking in English about geography. Mostly at a high level about the planet Earth and its oceans. So today we practice English speaking with geography phrases and vocabulary. Geography is a huge topic and we are only going to scratch the surface of the English terms and phrases commonly used, but we have to start somewhere, right? So the next time you hear someone talk about the equator or the pacific ocean in English, you can follow the conversation. With Adept English speaking podcast lessons, we want you to do a little more than just listen. Start by listening to the lesson several times. Then when it's a good time for you, try mimicking what I say, listen to a sentence, then try to say it yourself out aloud. If you find it difficult to listen to yourself while you listen to me, try to record what you say on your mobile phone. You can then listen to your recordings and mine. About a year ago, Stratfor connected with a group of world geography teachers at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, also known as LASA High School, in Austin, Texas. We were interested to see what would happen if we provided all of their freshman students full access to the geopolitical analysis and forecasting available through Stratfor Worldview. The results exceeded even our expectations. In this episode of the Stratfor Podcast, we sit down with LASA High School World Geography teachers Cody Moody and Neil Loewenstern, as well as freshmen Abigail Goff, Jacob Hammonds, Dylan Woolard and Tess Frazer. They tell us how LASA integrated Stratfor’s analysis into their projects and coursework this past year and what it’s meant to these students, both in and outside of the classroom.Read our latest analysis on this topic and more at Stratfor Worldview. After serious debate on whether or not to continue with a missing member, after an outpouring of accolades from rabid fans, and after the heartfelt on-line plea of one our guests, the three original members are back in the saddle again.  The Rooster ("Red" if you're nasty) fills the vacant seat, where she divulges the secrets of her unfamiliarity with World Geography and fondness for rolling pins.  Joining Red is her friend Tess, who, inspired by "John Snow Comes to Dinner" tries her hardest to remove Red from the Estrogen Throne, GoT style - except no dragons...no Diana Rigg...and no Little Finger.  Amidst the mayhem, Gil, Al, and Ron are educated about cuckholding, the correct pronunciation of ".gif", and how bad "The Emoji Movie" really is (THERE's a topic that begs discussion) among other things.  And through it all, the ghost of the absent fourth lingers on...

Celeste Julian currently a Special Education teacher,co- teaching in the areas of Biology and World Geography. I have worked with children on the high school level for over ten years, and I've encountered the numbers of girls becoming pregnant with out any outside support. The response from girls that have attended the program has been phenomenal. They listened, interacted and each were thankful that someone cared about them and their babies and, they were not judged. My Little Commitment is a non-profit 501c3 organization that works with girls in high school that are pregnant - giving them tools to use to be great parents to their newborn babies through the use of our program titled, The ABC's of Parenting - A Common Sense Approach. It is a multi-sensory presentation that involves their senses, yet not heavy allowing entertaining, pertinent information that will assist them during the pregnancy and after their babies are born
