Why Faculty Should Build a "Preferment Portfolio" with Darrell G. Kirch, MD

Faculty Factory

Transitioning to a life after full-time faculty work without losing your identity is what we're discussing with our guest Darrell G. Kirch, MD, on the Faculty Factory Podcast this week. Dr. Kirch has an formidable ability to lead and build teams having served as the President and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) from 2006 to 2019. He is an educator, biomedical scientist, clinical neuroscientist, clinician, and psychiatrist. He has held several major leadership positions at academic medicine institutions throughout North America and beyond. We are honored to call Dr. Kirch “a friend of our show” and he previously joined us for an episode recorded in 2019.  You can revisit the first episode with Dr. Kirch from a few years back here: https://facultyfactory.org/best-of-the-faculty-factory-podcast-an-interview-with-darrell-g-kirch-md/   As the end of a full-time faculty career approaches, many of us instinctively think about retirement. However, there's an alternative mindset that can pave the way for a fulfilling future: preferment. Rather than solely focusing on retirement as an endgame, let's consider how to curate a "Preferment Portfolio"—a balanced mix of passions, pursuits, and projects that ignite our enthusiasm and secure our identities. It's not uncommon for someone to struggle with finding an identity beyond their CV. After all, the demands of working as faculty in academic medicine can be so powerful that they overshadow many other aspects of our life. The good news for those struggling with this phenomenon, which often coexists with burnout, is that Dr. Kirch has excellent wisdom to impart in today's interview for building this portfolio. This approach could help you future-proof your priorities and create a life safeguarded from burnout. You can start today by reflecting on the aspects of your academic life that have brought you joy and fulfillment. How can you integrate these elements into your future beyond your traditional full-time role when the time comes?

Dr.  Steven Kirch is a successful entrepreneur, holds a Ph.D. in physics, and has over 20 years of experience in high tech. Today he shares his expertise with you. A trained facilitator of Steven Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven spends his days finding ways to dramatically grow your top and bottom lines. In this episode of the One Big Tip podcast, he shares actionable strategies that you can implement in your business to realize an increase in growth rate and profitability. Steven became a productivity coach by default. While working at Intel, he was offered the opportunity to take a course, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Steven Covey. This course dramatically changed his life, so much so that when Steven retired from intel, he hung out a shingle as a productivity coach. The first thing he noticed as a productivity facilitator was how entrepreneurs underestimate the value of their time. People are so busy building their business and wearing 17 different hats that they lose track of how to focus on moving the revenue needle forward. That's where Steven comes in. As a productivity coach, he teaches people how to run their businesses more effectively to focus on the things that matter. At the beginning of their journey, most entrepreneurs make the same mistakes. They don't realize the value of their time, and they try to do everything themselves. As far as efficiency goes, this is a giant misstep. It's more efficient to take the time to train someone once or twice and hand off the tasks and projects that are automated easily.  Using a systematic approach to productivity, Steven created a framework for his clients based on efficiency strategies that show them how their habits leave profits on the table. The first part of the productivity system is the knowing-doing gap. Most people know what they need to do to move that revenue needle, but they don't do it. Steven helps them put things into practice in their organization, whether it be assistance or different methods, to free up time so that they can focus on the important things. The second step in the system is finding three things that set your operation apart from the competition; what makes you unique? You may find a business that shares the first or second thing; that's why Steven asks clients to come up with three. The last part of his productivity framework connects the solution you offer to your target audience's problem using your uniqueness. Steven also teaches his clients the conversion equation, which educates people on attracting customers and how to convert leads. It's a four-part strategy: interrupt, engage, understand, and educate. You need to interrupt their thought process, engage with them, understand their pain points, and educate them on how your offer and uniqueness can make their lives better, easier, or more efficient. This is how you move that revenue needle in the right direction. As entrepreneurs, you need to be consistent about your offer. It needs to be something of value to your prospects.Being more efficient as an entrepreneur is the best way to increase your profit margin. By handing off projects and assignments to others, you get to focus on building your brand and your company. Don't leave money on the table in your business. Listen to this One Big Tip podcast episode and become more productive in your business. In this episode:[2:40] How one course changed Steven's lifeYou never know what will inspire youEfficiency is a skill that can be learned; put the time in and invest in yourself and your company[5:36] Avoid shiny objects syndromeMost people know what they need to do, they just can't implement it without outside supportMany entrepreneurs leave a large number of profits on the table because they don't want to relinquish coSupport the show

Upzoned

A quote from Batman, “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become a villain,” echoes through a great discussion on this week's Upzoned.  Host Abby Kinney brings “Twilight of the NIMBY,” a New York Times article by California-based housing and economics writer Connor Dougherty, to the table. Dougherty profiles retired teacher Susan Kirsch's two-decade battle to stop 20 condos from being developed in her neighborhood in the Bay Area community of Mill Valley. Kinney, a senior planner with Multistudio in Kansas City, was fascinated by this profile of Kirsch as a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) American archetype, a suburban homeowner who runs a nonprofit that “pushes back against statewide housing policy measures intended to subvert local anti-development activism.” In the profile, Kirsch is cast as a crusader for local control of development, working to protect her single-family home neighborhood from a condo development on an empty lot at the end of her street.  “She believes in slow growth as a perspective and it's partly reinforced by a distrust in large institutions…(a) ‘small C' conservatism that local government is better and more responsive to citizens than a bigger one that is further away,” Kinney says in her introduction. “So she represents one person in this longer movement, fighting development and campaigning for the right for local cities and suburban cities to have control over the built environment.” Kinney's guest, Strong Towns Senior Editor Daniel Herriges, recognizes the archetype Kirsch represents. Herriges is sympathetic to the idea that “neighbors who know the place best, who care about the place most…get the ultimate say in what happens around them.”  The problem, however, is that Kirsch and many in her generation who seek local control of housing policy are eating from two plates.  They are sitting atop a mountain of equity in their homes buoyed by a system of market supports in the form of government-backed mortgages and other state and federal development policies. Kirsch's home, a modest, single-family residence she bought for $100,000 in 1979, is now valued at almost $2 million. A state law intended to give homeowners protection from property taxes rising alongside astronomical home values, Proposition 13, keeps the taxable value of Kirch's home at $250,000.  Herriges says, “The reality is that this whole cohort of people have been incredible beneficiaries of large institutional forces…massive subsidies for suburban homebuilding in the post-WWII era of billions and billions of dollars of investment in the interstate highway system, in freeways that opened up huge swaths of suburban land to development.”  “We see it is unable to be replicated generation after generation, and so there's a whole bunch of younger people who would love to live Susan Kirsch's American dream, who can't dream of it. Middle-class, white-collar people in California who have given up on ever owning a home. That's the dissonance you have to reckon with.”  Kinney agrees, but points out it's too easy to turn homeowners like Kirsch into villains, reducing people who are, in the end, our neighbors, into cartoon characters. Should we see NIMBYs as heroes or villains? Dig into this episode of Upzoned to hear how name-calling won't win any arguments, and the nuances of housing policy don't lend themselves to broad stereotypes.
