Beastie Boys' Anthology: Sounds of Science, Michael Diamond (Mike D) says: “We had all been influenced by Lee Perry's productions. We were into how on reggae recordings there would often be a ‘dub version' on the b-side of a single, a practice that got co-opted by a few punk and early hip-hop singles as well.” Who knew? When their debut “License To Ill” was released in 1986, almost 40 years ago - it was fresh and had a great sense of humour, playfullness that on the surface could be disregarded as white-boy rap, but if you took a close listen you'll notice the attention to detail in the music - the use of sampling, 808 Drum Machine, experimentation, mixing and overall production - this was groundbreaking. The lads and Rick Ruben had crafted something unique that had not been done before. In 1985, it was Run-DMC, Schoolly D, and LL Cool J, but by 1986, hip-hop had begun to transform, and part of that was due to this release. They'd pulled together all the elements of their musical inspirations, Run-DMC, WWF Wrestling (Rick Ruben is a known superfan of the sport), The Clash, Dub, Punk, along with a frat-boy, teenage FU attitude. They'd taken hip-hop to a level while still paying homage to those they'd learned from, borrowed from, sampled from and absorbed. Within the following year, you'd have more groundbreaking releases from Boogie Down Productions, Marley Marl & The Mighty Public Enemy. On their 1998 album Hello Nasty, Lee Perry is on “Dr Lee, PhD. Perry's fingerprints are evident: spring reverb, echo throws, and that cosmic feel only he could bring. They also collaborated with Mad Professor (the recording in question is the unreleased dub instrumental album that Mad Professor and the Beastie Boys made, presumably at some point between the releases of Ill Communication and Hello Nasty) from Beastiemania.com. Dub has woven its magic thread throughout so many styles of music, not to mention launching entirely new genres via direct inspiration and use of dub techniques and sampling, that we shouldn't be surprised to see that same link with the Beastie Boys. Según la ONU, en 2024, cada 10 minutos una mujer en algún lugar del mundo fue asesinada por alguien cercano a ella. En Honduras, que se encuentra en la recta final de su campaña electoral para las presidenciales, la situación es alarmante. Por Carlos Herranz, nuestro enviado especial en San Pedro Sula Honduras enfrenta una grave crisis de violencia contra las mujeres, con 7.746 feminicidios desde 2005 hasta 2024. Es el país con la tasa más alta de Centroamérica, y el quinto en el mundo, según el Observatorio de la Violencia de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras. Noemí Dubón es integrante del Foro de Mujeres por la Vida, que abarca 16 organizaciones feministas del norte del país. Explica a RFI que “no hay investigación, entonces no podemos detallar específicamente qué es lo que realmente pasa, pero la mayor parte de los casos es con armas de fuego que imperan en este país, cualquiera puede andar un arma ya sea de manera legal o ilegal. Las mujeres denuncian la violencia doméstica, por ejemplo, y no es atendida como debería de ser. Las mujeres en este país no tienen seguridad.” “Le ponen mil excusas” ¿Pero qué falla en el proceso, cuando una mujer acude a una estación de policía para denunciar la violencia? “La mujer puede presentarse a una estación de policía, eso dice la ley, y la policía debe actuar de inmediato cuando está dentro de las 24 horas. Está en flagrancia, como decimos, pero no es eso lo que está ocurriendo, le ponen mil excusas a una mujer. Le dicen que no tienen patrulla, que no hay quien la acompañe y así se pasan las 24 horas y después de ese plazo les dicen que ya no pueden hacer nada porque ya pasaron las 24 horas y tiene que dirigirse a la Fiscalía, al Ministerio Público, a los juzgados”, lamenta Dubón. “Entonces, ellas van a los juzgados y les dejan cita en el juzgado, citas demoradas hasta uno, dos y tres meses para que puedan tener una audiencia con el agresor. Mientras tanto, hay amenazas que no son atendidas como se debería de atender y muchas mujeres terminan en ese proceso perdiendo la vida, siendo asesinadas por el agresor”, agrega. Las organizaciones feministas critican que la lacra de los feminicidios no forme parte de las prioridades de ninguno de los partidos en esta campaña electoral, de cara a las presidenciales del 30 de noviembre.
