If you missed last week's Zero Trust Summit at the Spy Museum in downtown D.C., you're in luck. We have a replay of what was one of the best panels of the day focused on U.S. military cybersecurity and the adoption of zero trust across the services. FedScoop's Billy Mitchell was joined by Wanda Jones-Heath of the Air Force and Ann Marie Schummann of the Navy, principal cyber advisors for their respectives services, as well as Imran Umar, Booz Allen's vice president of zero trust, for a panel that explored the progress made in zero-trust adoption and what comes next as the Pentagon targets zero-trust readiness by the end of 2027, including embracing the framework for operational technology systems and weapons platforms. In the news: Government agencies responded with caution to the Office of Personnel Management's request that federal workers provide five bullet points about what they accomplished last week by the end of the day Monday. The Securities and Exchange Commission gave workers a template to follow; the General Services Administration and Department of Commerce told employees not to send classified information, links or attachments; and the Department of Defense told employees to pause responses for the time being, according to emails obtained by FedScoop and agency statements. At least some agencies ultimately told employees participation wasn't required. Technical systems housed within USAID may be transferred to the State Department, including those related to global health, a source familiar with the matter told FedScoop, with about 40 systems potentially impacted by the transition. The USAID.gov website has now been updated to note the long-anticipated reduction in force at the agency, noting that approximately 1,600 personnel are now on administrative leave. A small group within the agency seems to be involved in discussions related to transferring technical assets to the State Department, the source said. Some of those systems might end up on OpenNet, a global network State uses for data applications. The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

John Gilroy on LinkedIn   https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com History books will document the origin of the relational database at around 1970. About a decade later graph technology was introduced but it has taken decades for the cost of storage to go down and the ability to compute to go up. Finally, we can take advantage of a new way to unlock answers from a database. A typical relational database looks at information in tables. This can be fantastic for many actions, which is why it became popular. However, drilling down into information can involve re-indexing and hopping around tables. Graphing technology looks at the data and tries to find relationships. As consumers, we know if we purchase an expensive couch with a credit card, the credit card company may email and question if that is a valid purchase. Well, multiply that by hundreds of thousands of users and millions of data points. It is not just a couch; it may be automated financial transactions that involve fraud. Attend the Neo4j Graph Summit Government event on October 9th at the Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. For a human to sit down with some tables of data would make the process so time-consuming, that millions could be stolen before the culprit was discovered. During the interview, John Bender from Neo4J explains how they respect the existing data structures but can layer on a deeper understanding of the relationship between a specific transaction and an outcome. In other words, you will not have to say goodbye to your data silos. Another application is understanding the supply chain. Because so much hardware and software are outsourced, it is hard to connect the dots. John Bender refers to an Army project where they have eight million nodes and twenty-one million relationships. Listen to put into perspective new ways to improve analytical speed and reduce risk from fraud to the supply chain.

My friends decided they wanted to go through all of Ian Fleming's James Bond films, so we are starting with Dr. No starring the one and only Sir Sean Connery. He was the first to portray the iconic character and played him in 6 films. I love these films! I even have a James Bond keychain that I got in Washington, D.C. at The Spy Museum that has 3 of his license plates. Dr. No Drinks (https://summerfruitcup.wordpress.com & https://www.bjtonline.com): Vodka Martini “One Medium-Dry Vodka Martini and mixed how you said Sir, and not stirred” Ingredients 3 oz Vodka 1/4 oz Vermouth Lemon Twist for garnish Ice Directions Fill a cocktail glass with ice. Set it aside. Fill your cocktail shaker (or a pint glass) about ¾ with ice. Add three ounces of vodka or simply add vodka to the top of the ice. (Bartenders' trick: fill the glass with water, then pour the water into your ice-filled shaker. This will determine your ”fill line.”) Add vermouth. A quarter-ounce splash should give you a medium-dry martini. Place the top onto your shaker (or your Boston-style shaker over your pint glass) and shake vigorously until frost forms on the shaker. Empty the ice from the glass and strain the martini into it. Garnish with a lemon twist and enjoy. Red Stripe Beer Hailing from Jamaica, where the film is set, there is little wonder that this is what they drink in Pussfellas Bar. Red Stripe was created by Desnoes & Geddes in 1928. Like the Martini Red Stripe is quite light and very refreshing with a warm hoppiness at the end, a little touch of citrus. The James Bond Gin & Tonic Bond ordered a double gin and tonic and one whole green lime. When the drink came he cut the lime in half, dropped the two squeezed halves into the long glass, almost filled the glass with ice cubes and then poured in the tonic. He took the drink out on to the balcony, and sat and looked out across the spectacular view. As ever a delicious drink that is tart but not overly so. I used Bombay Dry Gin (a very classic style of gin) and it works well although some may prefer to use a gin with a higher ABV. Even so few will be disappointed by this Bond Beverage. Drinking Rules (https://thechuggernauts.com): Take a sip whenever... Someone says “James” or “Bond” (Yes this would mean 3 drinks for the phrase “Name's Bond, James Bond”) Any agent's number (or letter) is mentioned. Such as 007, 006, M, Q, etc… Bond uses one of his gadgets given to him by Q (or anyone else at the agency) Someone gets shot Someone falls crashes Bond gets into his over-the-top car Anyone on screen sips alcoholDrink twice if it's a shaken Martini Take a huge chug whenever... There's a sex scene A chase scene starts Finish your drink whenever... Bond is successfully captured. There's a bit of a grey area in some films on if he was successfully captured, so let's just say any time he is taken somewhere at gunpoint, put in handcuffs, or ends up in a cell. As always, drink responsibly. Follow me on Instagram and Twitter @Line_Drunk, subscribe/follow on your favorite streaming service, tell your friends about the podcast and listen together. Summary Peter Earnest spent 35 years in the CIA as a case officer and retired as its chief spokesman. He was the founding Executive Director of the International Spy Museum. What You'll Learn Intelligence Losing a friend in the line of duty vs. betrayal by a colleague  Using affability to your advantage Thoughts on the shift from classic espionage to counterterrorism for the CIA  The relationship between the CIA, the press and the public Reflections The origins of the International Spy Museum The role museums can play in fostering a sense of collective identity & esprit de corps  And much, much more… Episode Notes May 21st, 2022. The date of the Memorial Service at the International Spy Museum for Peter Earnest, the founding Executive Director of the museum and a 35-year veteran of the CIA and. In honor of him, his week's episode is an exit-interview he recorded with my predecessor, Vince Houghton, not long after Peter announced his retirement from the museum. Peter was a case officer at CIA for 25 years, largely in Europe and the Middle East, recruiting and running agents, and getting involved in covert actions, counterespionage, and double agent operations. He later went on to work in the Inspector General's office and as the CIA's Senate liaison, concluding his career as the CIA's chief spokesman.  What is it like being a nice guy in the murky world of intelligence? How does a tight-lipped case officer make the transition to chief spokesman? How did a museum on espionage and intelligence end up in Washington D.C.? Peter Earnest died on February 13, 2022. He will be sorely missed. And… Peter wrote the foreword for a 2011 edition of Boy Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell's classic book, My Adventures as a Spy, featuring chapters such as “Commercial Spying,” “Traitorous Spying,” and “How Spies Disguise Themselves.” The only CIA officer who came through the ranks to become Director, Robert Gates, was an Eagle Scout, as was the only Director of both the CIA and the FBI, Judge William Webster. Quote of the Week "There's a broad respect from museums by the American public they're distrustful of almost everything else, but the trust in museums is high, and so I think it's a place that some of those senior professionals refer to. If they've come down, they feel, it's, doing good work." – Peter Earnest Resources Headline Resource TRIBUTE: CIA Veteran Who Helped Launch the Spy Museum, Dies at 88, International Spy Museum, YouTube (2022) *SpyCasts Peter Earnest: My Life in the CIA (2012) Articles In Memoriam, Peter Earnest, 1934-2022, SPY (2022) CIA Veteran who Ran a Spy Museum, Dies at 88, NYT (2022) CIA Veteran Who Helped Launch Spy Museum, Dies at 88, H. Spies have captured global audience attention for centuries, be they real-world spies like the Rosenbergs, or famous fictional characters like James Bond. It’s no wonder the International Spy Museum is “the most successful paid admission museum in D.C.,” said Chris Cooper, the Spy Museum's Project Manager for Electrosonic. On this episode of Fusion, we take a peek inside the Spy Museum, getting to know the technology that brings the interactive exhibits to life. Be it souped-up Aston Martins or covert gadgets, visitors to the Spy Museum want an immersive experience. Electrosonic integrates the technology to make this happen and, much like a real spy, must make the tech invisible. “We try to make sure that the technology serves the purpose of telling the story, which in a lot of cases means that we need to make sure that the tech is hidden," Cooper said. As an Electrosonic Project Manager, Cooper has been a part of a lot of different projects, but none have been as thrilling or fascinating to work on as the Spy Museum. He thinks the public intrigue with spies stems from a fascination with “imagining what it would be like to be someone else.” The Spy Museum captivates audience attention with real spy artifacts and stories, culled from actual CIA, FBI, and NSA operatives. Electrosonic illuminates these stories with tech like RFID, interactives, and a game-like experience. Thanks to a recent facelift and overhaul from Electrosonic, new buzz about the museum has sparked intrigue and excitement in the community among new and returning visitors.

Support the show (https://nein2five.de/ressourcen/)

About the book: Guy Burgess was the most important, complex and fascinating of 'The Cambridge Spies' - Maclean, Philby, Blunt - all brilliant young men recruited in the 1930s to betray their country to the Soviet Union. An engaging and charming companion to many, an unappealing, utterly ruthless manipulator to others, Burgess rose through academia, the BBC, the Foreign Office, MI5 and MI6, gaining access to thousands of highly sensitive secret documents which he passed to his Russian handlers. About the author: Andrew Lownie was born in Kenya, brought up in Bermuda and educated in Asheville, North Carolina before attending the universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. A former journalist for The London Times and the British representative for the Washington-based National Intelligence Centre, he helped set up the Spy Museum in Washington. Now a successful literary agent and the President of The Biographers Club , his books include an acclaimed life of the writer and former Governor General of Canada John Buchan. This book lecture took place at The Institute of World Politics on October 11, 2016.

Also, we reminisce about the crazy crap we learned in elementary school . . . Well, mostly Kate reminisces while Andy is amazed that any of this took place in a public school.
