Hosted by editor and journalist Michael Schneider, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. In this episode, we bring together a diverse group of industry experts for a dynamic conversation about the ever-evolving world of TV series. We delve into what makes a series truly international—what allows a show to break through cultural and language barriers and resonate with audiences worldwide? Is it the warmth of relatable characters that audiences are seeking during challenging times, or is it the exploration of social-political issues and dystopian themes that capture our collective attention? Ultimately, the answer lies in universally compelling stories that speak to viewers beyond the confines of a single market. While it may be a tougher feat for comedy, there's a clear call for future series to transcend these boundaries and reach a global audience. In this discussion, Anna Rohde, Steve Matthews, Maria Cervera, and Paul Telegdy offer their unique perspectives on the international series market, providing predictions on where global audiences are headed next. They also explore the current trends shaping the industry, including the impact of financial shifts. Tune in to hear the experts tackle the future of series content and its journey across the globe. The Berlinale Series Market is the EFM's boutique market for serial content from all over the world. From February 16 to 19, industry experts, creatives, buyers and distributors will meet again at CinemaxX at Potsdamer Platz and Gropius Bau. Steve Matthews is the Head of Scripted, Creative, at Banijay Entertainment, where he plays a pivotal role in the group's production development process, leading on creative initiatives for original drama projects. Before joining Banijay Entertainment, Matthews was VP and Executive Producer, Scripted, at HBO Europe, having joined the business back in 2014. In that post, he partnered with local teams across Central Europe, Spain and Nordics, to spearhead the development of original series, miniseries, and international adaptations. His portfolio included Pustina, Umbre, Blinded By The Lights, Uspjeh, The Sleepers, Foodie Love, Gösta; and from Banijay Entertainment's footprint specifically, 30 Coins (Pokeepsie), Beforeigners (Rubicon), and Beartown (Filmlance). Additionally, Matthews is dedicated to mentoring talent, and set up Banijay Bootcamp, a specific programme for scripted creatives. Before joining Germany's distribution and production house Beta Film GmbH as International Creative Executive & Content Editor, Anna Rohde studied dramaturgy, philosophy, and literature at Munich's Theatre Academy and at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. Before her studies, she worked as assistant director in many national and international TV and feature films. She is member of Germany's VeDRA (Verband für Film- und Fernsehdramaturgie e.V.), jury member of e.g. the International Emmy's semi-finals, the Council of Europe Eurimages development award and – among others - mentor of SFF's (Sarajevo Film Festival) CineLink workshop, the post-graduate Serial Eyes writing program. As content editor, she has been working on many internationally successful shows from the CEE region, most recently on the multi-awarded THE SILENCE (2021-2023) and GOLDEN BOY (2021), Jasmila Zbanic's Venice premiered I KNOW YOUR SOUL (2023), and the Canneseries-awarded OPERATION SABRE (2024). Maria Cervera is Head of Content for Cattleya Producciones, part of ITV Studios in Spain. During her 20 year+ professional path she has focused on series development and production for local and international markets, with previous roles at Paramount's International TV Studio as Head of Content for EMEAA and within the Netflix International team. She also teaches at several writing programs including Berlin's Serial Eyes and Spain's screenwriters' guild-sponsored master. Paul Telegdy has worked across all genres of content, on brands as diverse as Top Gear, Teletubbies, Dr Who, The Voice and Planet Earth, to name a handful. Paul worked at NBCUniversal for 12 years, becoming Chairman of NBC in 2019, before that the BBC for ten years. In 2021, Paul co-founded The Whole Spiel, a media, entertainment, and gaming company based in Berlin and Los Angeles. With a degree in Korean and Japanese, and having lived in Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Japan, The US and the UK, Paul has a distinctly global view of content and opportunity. The host Michael Schneider has been covering the business of television for more than 25 years — most of that time at Variety, where he oversees television coverage as its TV Editor. Schneider has won several entertainment journalism awards and also regularly contributes to local outlets including Spectrum News 1 and KCRW. He was previously Executive Editor at IndieWire; the Chief Content Officer for TV Guide Magazine; and TV Editor at Daily Variety. Mike regularly moderates industry and TV show panels at events including Comic-Con, PaleyFest, HRTS, NATPE and others, and once won a staring contest with Jon Hamm on the Dolby Theatre stage. This podcast episode has been developed in collaboration with Variety. The Berlinale's European Film Market is the first international film market of the year, where the film industry starts its business. Industry Insights - The EFM Podcast puts a spotlight on highly topical and trendsetting industry issues, thereby creating a compass for the forthcoming film year. But, as an Editor or Assistant Editor, which one should you learn so you can be competitive in the marketplace? The answer, of course, is it depends on the type of content you want to work on. In this episode, I have a conversation with Film and TV Editor, and founder of Master the Workflow, Lawrence Jordan, all about which NLE we should pick to focus our learning on, how to become a pro at it, what workflows should need to know, what type of content each of the NLEs are better at and much more. If you are just starting out in video editing, or you want to transition from one content type (e.g. Corporate Video) to another (e.g. Feature Film), this is the episode for you! *************** For more podcast episodes, tutorials and to read my daily journal, where I post how my transition to filmmaking is going, check out: https://www.CreativeSpark.ai

Episode 068 Scott Pellet S.O.S. Friend, Skater, Hollywood Film/TV editor, TEXAN! Scott and I met over 10 years ago when he was trying to help put together a film on the history of Texas Skateboarding. We quickly became friends and have stayed in touch since then, sharing meals, skating, stories, hanging with family and mutual friends, etc... Scott found an interest in filmmaking at an early age.  Being a kid who grew up in the Dallas area and riding at the Jeff Phillips Skatepark, the first major media project he put together was on Jeff Phillips. Scott's love of skateboarding, filmmaking and music have filled his life and still do. He has been working in the Hollywood TV/Film world for quite awhile now.  I have been fortunate enough to get to visit him at some of the studios he was working at and see sets for successful TV shows such as The Goldbergs and Chuck. He has worked as an editor on the TV shows  "Chuck" (NBC), "The Goldbergs" (ABC), "Mad Dogs" (Amazon), "Sneaky Pete" (Amazon), "L.A.'s Finest" (Spectrum), "Painkiller" (Netflix) and the Lionsgate feature, "The Devil You Know".  You can check his IMDB credits by clicking on this IMDB link.  You will see all the cool stuff this skater has done. I am stoked I have gotten to see a lot of it up close and personal over the years. For several years, Scott and fellow Texans Heath Cherryhomes and Jake Kirby would make an annual pilgrimage to all the local skateparks while Heath and Jake stayed with me during the summer. We were all given nicknames and Scott's was S.O.S. "Sex on a Stick".  I had Texas-sized stickers of our nicknames printed for our helmets symbolizing our brotherhood.... Things we discuss in this podcast that I think some of you might find interesting are our skating adventures, his work on his first film about Jeff Phillips, his Hollywood gigs and the time he filmed interviews (including Jeff Grosso) at my house. Hope you enjoy meeting another interesting person who has passed through my life and is also a skater and very talented in other realms...

The second film in our Stranger Than Fiction cycle is Nicolas Winding Refn's left field take on bio pics, 2008's Bronson.Special Guest: Katey Stoetzel is co-founder and TV Editor for InBetweenDrafts. She hosts the “House of the Dragon After Show” podcast and can be read on various other places like Inverse and Screen Speck. Refn's conspicuous filmmaking style lends itself well to the crazy and violent life of Charles Bronson aka Britain's "most violent prisoner." Shot as a performance art piece rather than a narrative film, Bronson was certainly a calling card for both Refn and the magnificent lead performance of Tom Hardy. Looking back on the film some fifteen years later, the boldness feels oversaturated and worn, like an overly compressed mp3. It blasts loud, but the dynamic range is so blown out that little emotional timbre is left. Especially troubling is the tightrope Refn chooses to snap in two instead of traverse. Refn claims he is making a movie about man he knows nothing about. Charles Bronson is a real person who did very awful things to real people. Refn gives us a barometer with which to measure the level of exploitation that true life films can conjure. Here lies the bottom. For our chaser film, we lounge with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg in 2004's The Terminal, a comfy mid-aughts dramedy filled with max schmaltz and min edge.

I enjoyed every single mouthful and savoured the delicious broth (who do I think I am a bloody food critique?!) as the week before Scott had taken me through the whole process, including ‘agitating’ the broth and how the noodles are also all made on site. Scott worked as a full time TV editor on documentaries, lifestyle and reality series – which in itself would be a dream job to some. But Scott had other ideas…You will absolutely love hearing the couple’s incredible journey including Scott learning the art of ramen making from two ramen masters in Japan – a serendipitous story itself. It isn’t always plain sailing starting a new business and Scott shares the reality of restaurant business – and opening their third restaurant ‘Lonely Mouth’ literally as COVID struck. Scott and Katie (who’s day job is a media lawyer) play to their strengths as a husband and wife team and wouldn’t have it any other way and from what I can see they are nailing it. As Katie’s Instagram mentions you can find her 'worshipping at the altar of ramen' and after my first bowl of the good stuff I might just be joining her there too! Featuring: Chris Chibnall, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Erin Kelly and Alison Graham. Who killed 11-year-old Danny Latimer? It was the question on the lips of millions in 2013, as the award-winning television series Broadchurch (Kudos/Imaginary Friends) kept the country enthralled across eight superb episodes. While the detailed depiction of the police investigation was riveting, the series also explored the interlocking lives of a closeknit seaside community brimming with dark and tragic secrets – secrets we couldn’t wait to see spilled. We talk to creator, writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall, and stars Olivia Colman and Jodie Whittaker, about the phenomenal success of the programme, and novelist Erin Kelly, who has the enviable task of bringing this onscreen triumph to the page in Broadchurch: The Official Novel. The event will be chaired by Alison Graham, TV Editor at The Radio Times. TV Panel: Broadchurch was recorded live at HIF's Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in July 2014.
