Last week, Meta announced changes to its content moderation policy, including the removal of third-party fact-checking across its apps in favor of a crowdsourced community notes feature, similar to X. Today on Equity, Rebecca Bellan caught up with Eugen Rochko, CEO of Mastodon, to explore what these changes mean for users and how decentralized social media platforms like Mastodon could offer a viable alternative to mainstream giants like Meta. Listen to the full episode to hear more about: Mastodon's decision to transition to a non-profit in Europe The challenges of implementing interoperability with platforms like TikTok -- which is set to “go dark” in the US over the weekend -- and the importance of user choice. Which other decentralized platforms we should keep an eye on. (Hint: Pixelfed is in the mix.) Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. In a compelling move, Mastodon, the decentralized social media network, recently announced its latest update: streamlining the user onboarding process. This move comes at a time when the tussle for dominance in the decentralized social media universe is escalating, with platforms like Bluesky, backed by Jack Dorsey, and Meta also joining the fray. Historically, Mastodon's onboarding process required new users to choose from thousands of servers, or communities, where they'd like to establish their account. However, this decentralized network revealed on Monday that it plans to direct new users to create an account on mastodon.social, the platform's flagship and largest server. This does not imply that the platform is confiscating the power of new users to sign up for a particular community. Instead, the signup page will now offer two distinct choices: “Join mastodon.social” or “Pick my own server.” The network emphasizes that users have the flexibility to switch servers anytime they wish. Eugen Rochko, the CEO of Mastodon, justifies the change as an essential step to help new users overcome the sign-up process's complexities and start engaging with others quickly. He writes, "If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder." The platform now boasts over 12,000 instances users can join, making it a daunting task for newbies to select one. Will it be mastodon.world or mastodon.online? Or perhaps a niche-focused server like birdon.social? The new approach aims to eliminate this confusion and create a more seamless user experience. Will Mastodon replace Twitter as the new oasis of social? After Musk took over Twitter and initiated a series of controversial platform changes, more than 140,000 Twitter users announced that they were moving their social presence to Mastodon. Within a month, the Mastodon platform grew from 300,000 to 2.6 million active users, and its popularity shocked even founder Eugen Rochko. Many advertisers followed the migrating Twitter users, looking for opportunities to promote themselves on Mastodon, only to be disappointed that Mastodon does not support any form of marketing at this time. This seems to echo the original purpose for which Mastodon was created: social networks should not be sold. In 2016, Eugen, a German engineer built the prototype of Mastodon in the framework of W3C, and in the process of continuous crowdfunding, Mastodon managed to stand out from the niche applications and became a popular product in Web3 social products. There have been many user exoduses in Twitter's history, and Mastodon has been one of the most important recipients of these exodus stories. After Mastodon's recent phenomenal growth, Eugen, who was born in 1993, made a bold statement in a Fortune interview that one day, Mastodon will replace Twitter. In this episode, we invite Suji, a long-time patron of Mastodon, and Hana, a new-comer on Mastodon, to take a deeper look at why this decentralized social product could become Twitter's biggest competitor. As we discussed recently on Do You Really Know, Elon Musk's Twitter buyout has been causing concern not just among company employees, but also” the platform's users. Around a month has passed since the Tesla and Space X boss expanded his portfolio with the acquisition of Twitter. But he's already fired over half of all employees and made a host of other unpopular changes. Some users have already decided it's time to look elsewhere, and that's where Mastodon comes into the equation. The small social network was created back in 2016 by then 23-year-old German IT engineer Eugen Rochko. Now might just be its time to shine. What kind of social network is Mastdodon then? Mastodon: The Platform Taking Twitter's Worn and Weary

In the wake of the five alarm fire at Twitter, a small, quiet social media alternative has been quietly attracting the tweeting weary. Mastodon, named for the prehistoric elephant relatives, was originally created by a German programmer named Eugen Rochko in 2016. And even though it shares similarities to its blue bird peer, the two platforms possess many differences. For one, Mastodon is organized by groups called "servers" or "instances," there's no universal experience like on Twitter. It's also completely decentralized — each server is run by individuals or small groups — with no overseeing company. But is it here to stay? This week, Brooke sits down with Clive Thompson, a tech journalist and author of the book Coders: The Making of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World, to talk about why people like Mastodon, who it's for, and why we should watch its latest evolution. You can find Clive Thompson on Mastodon at @clive@saturation.social and OTM by searching @onthemedia@journa.host.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since the early 2000s, social media and social networking has played a key role in how internet users across the world interact with one another. But in more recent years, major privacy concerns and the approaches to moderating content on these platforms has become an on-going debate. Some argue for so-called “free speech absolutism”, regardless of the consequences, while many others see the inherent dangers of letting these systems run unchecked… meanwhile, behind the scenes, big money and influence can create interesting dynamics when it comes to who is running these platforms. We also discuss how funding the things we love and keeping them going is a difficult thing when their competing with “free” centralized services. Sean is using Pleroma, a social network that federates with Mastodon and others using the Activity Pub protocol. Our guest is experimenting with FunkWhale, a social network with sharing music at its core (Also using Activity Pub). Peertube is a YouTube replacement from the world of open source. Sean explains how it works. A really great human in the fediverse, Wakest, gave Sean this list of 40+ fediverse projects in the works. During the recording, Jacky was in the chatroom asking questions and contributing to the conversation. Sean used to work at BackerKit. What’s Paul using right now? He’s been playing with Micro.blog. Sean brings up a topic we will cover with another guest this season, the IndieWeb. One of the cores of IndieWeb is Publish on your own Site, Syndicate Everywhere (POSSE). Manton Reece is the developer of Micro.blog. Paul and Jacky (in the chatroom) talk about funding issues and Sean shares how Eugen Rochko, the developer of Mastodon is paid. The Patreon alternative discussed is called LibrePay. Apple nerd Paul likes & subscribes to sixcolors.com, Maximum Fun, and RelayFM. Chris is using Masto.host to have his own instance on Mastodon (You should message him and join it.) The service is maintained by the amazing Hugo. One of Chris’ favorite projects is PixelFed from the amazing Dansup. Discovery is a big discussion in the episode, and Paul mentions directory services. Mastodon has Trunk which associates people with subjects. Sean recommends Halt and Catch Fire despite not really liking television. He also likes Mad Men. IRL - Online Life Is Real Life

Some people believe that decentralization is the inevitable future of the web. They believe that internet users will start to demand more privacy and authenticity of information online and that they’ll look to decentralized platforms to get those things. But would decentralization be as utopian as advocates say it could be? Host Manoush Zomorodi speaks to Eugen Rochko of Mastodon, an ad-free alternative to Twitter; Justin Hunter of Graphite docs, a decentralized alternative to GoogleDocs; Maria Bustillos who hopes to help eliminate fake news online through the Blockchain; David Irvine, the co-founder of MaidSafe who plans to make the centralized internet as we know it redundant; and Tom Simonite of WIRED, who comments on both the promise and also the pitfalls of decentralization. IRL is an original podcast from Mozilla, maker of Firefox and always fighting for you. For more on the series go to irlpodcast.org Help us dream up the next season of IRL. What topics should we cover? Who should we talk to? Let us know by filling out this survey. Try out the decentralized endeavors covered in this episode of IRL: Mastodon Graphite Docs MaidSafe Popula Decentralization efforts are proof that the age of internet innovation is far from over. In fact, Mozilla staff work tirelessly on decentralized web standards, which have been — and continue to be — widely adopted. Mozilla co-chaired the W3C Social Web Working Group 2014 through 2018, which produced several key decentralized social web standards. Some have dozens of implementations like Webmention (a standard for federating conversations across the decentralized web); and MicroPub (a standard API for client applications to post to decentralized web services). Check out IndieWeb.org for more on key decentralized web standards, and ‘become a citizen’ of the Indie Web. As a part of Mozilla’s dedication to decentralized innovation, Mozilla participated in the 2018 Decentralized Web Summit. See our Founder and Executive Chairwoman Mitchell Baker’s talk on revitalizing the web. Hear Tantek Çelik, Web Standards Lead, speak on taking back your content with practical decentralization steps; and watch Chris Riley, Head of Policy, lead a web panel on decentralization. So, are you inspired? Want to work on the decentralized web? Join Mozilla at one of these events: Feb 23-24, 2019: IndieWebCamp Austin; Mar 30-31, 2019: IndieWebCamp New Haven; May 4-5, 2019: IndieWebCamp Berlin; June 29-30, 2019: IndieWeb Summit in Portland. Questions about participating? Ask here. For more, we've teamed up with 826 Valencia to bring you articles written by students on IRL topics this season. Accompanying this IRL episode, Huy An N. from De Marillac Academy wrote about centralized social media platforms and privacy. JDR interviews Eugen about Mastodon's culture, tech, his personal frustrations, and what it's like to be the subject of other people's frustrations. you may not be surprised to hear, but things also get silly.

We talked with Eugen Rochko, the creator of Mastodon, about where Mastodon came from the problem it aimed to solve. How it’s not exactly Twitter alternative, although that’s its known claim to fame. Why it’s probably not going anywhere. The ins-and-outs of federation, getting started, running an instance, why you would want to — cool stuff you’ve never considered could be built on top of Mastodon. And finally, the story behind naming posted content a “toot”.
