This episode is sponosored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah and Paul discuss Sara's PTSD depiction and the added flashbacks of Gretchen torturing Sara, noting how killing a woman in front of Sara motivates her confrontation with Gretchen. They critique the season's heavy use of torture as a narrative tool that often goes unquestioned, contrasting it with the show's earlier nuance about the justice system. They highlight the emotional ending with Michael holding Roland's hand as he dies as unusually human for the series, discuss Sara returning to doctor mode (including fake surgery props), and analyze Michael's relationship “redirect” from a brain tumor discussion to revealing Gretchen is alive. Fan questions cover playing PTSD (dissociation, fear, professional remove), limited improvisation in intense scenes, and whether Sara's story was sidelined to serve Michael, with Callies noting TV norms of the era while arguing Sara still had a substantial arc. Can creative writing become a form of biblical interpretation? That is the provocative question at the heart of my conversation with Sarah Rosenson about her new book, Fan Fiction on the Book of Genesis: A Guide to Close Reading of and Creative Writing on the Bible (Cherry Orchard Books, 2026). The modern phenomenon of fan fiction involves readers writing creative pieces that answer questions left open in favorite works of literature. This also describes the ancient tradition of midrash, where readers write stories filling in gaps in the Bible. In Fan Fiction on the Book of Genesis Sarah Rosenson discusses the questions left open in the first book of the Bible, and every chapter includes questions for the characters in the stories, which can serve as prompts for conversations or creative writing. Rosenson argues that careful reading reveals narrative gaps: characters whose motivations remain unexplained, conversations that never occur, ethical dilemmas left unresolved, and emotions that are only implied. Drawing on the long tradition of Jewish midrash, she proposes that readers can engage these silences through disciplined creative writing, using imagination not as a substitute for close reading but as an extension of it. In our conversation, we discussed some of Genesis's most familiar stories from unexpected angles. What if Eve's pursuit of knowledge is more complex than simple disobedience? Why does Noah never challenge God's decision to destroy the world? What happens when Hagar's perspective becomes central rather than peripheral? Why does Abraham argue for the people of Sodom but remain silent when Isaac is placed on the altar? And how does the Joseph narrative negotiate the relationship between divine providence and human responsibility? We also explore the broader methodological questions raised by the book. Does describing midrash as "fan fiction" make an ancient interpretive tradition more accessible, or does it risk misunderstanding it? How far can readers imaginatively expand biblical narratives while remaining faithful to the text? And what safeguards distinguish responsible interpretation from speculation? Whether you are interested in biblical studies, literary criticism, Jewish interpretation, or creative writing, our conversation offers a thoughtful discussion of how ancient texts continue to invite new readings. More than providing answers, Rosenson's book encourages readers to ask better questions and, in doing so, to discover that Genesis remains as intellectually and ethically challenging today as it has been for centuries. You can find more about Sarah and her work here. Amisah Bakuri (PhD) is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This episode is sponosored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss Prison Break episode 407, “Five the Hard Way,” opening with an explanation of the craps term “hard way” before reflecting on the production's Las Vegas shoot at the newly opened Planet Hollywood, including staying and filming on-site, the surreal “bubble” of casino life, and practical details like overheated door handles and early-morning casino atmosphere. They highlight comedic beats (including the Carrot Top gag), wardrobe and continuity decisions around Sara's outfits and scars, and debate story choices such as Sara's repeated honeypot attempts and the episode's “gay panic” pivot to Sucre, criticizing its logic and gender imbalance while noting how such writing would differ today. Callies shares a vivid on-set memory tied to postpartum depression, describing how it affected her behavior, went unrecognized for years, and later improved after seeking acupuncture and herbal support. They also touch on T-Bag and Gretchen's dynamic and briefly discuss TV scoring trends and how music guides audience engagement. What if Sirius decided to stay in England and deliver on his promise to raise Harry instead of hiding somewhere sunny? Changes abound with that one decision...Alternate Universe based on prompt 'What if Sirius hadn't run away to somewhere sunny after escaping Hogwarts but stayed and tried to make Harry's wish of a home come true?' Covers alternative 4th Year/Goblet of Fire and therefore does not follow canon religiously.Pairings: Harry/Hermione is the main pairing. All others are surprises so read at your own risk - although I will say there are a number which follow canon.

This episode is sponosored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss Prison Break S4E6 “Blow Out,” focusing on how the episode unexpectedly humanizes Gretchen through a reunion with her sister and the reveal that her “niece” is actually her daughter, creating new emotional stakes and questions about the child's safety and paternity. They analyze the episode's dense structure—dropping viewers into a heist in progress at a racetrack, then pivoting into a one-episode “prison break” to free Mahone without showing much planning—arguing it deepens the show's core theme of loyalty over strategy. They also examine Sara's racetrack “honeypot” disguise, the limitations and humor potential of the trope, and how wardrobe and performance choices played into “male gaze” framing, plus behind-the-scenes memories including an on-set earthquake. The conversation connects the show's conspiratorial themes to the 2008 financial crisis and post-9/11 paranoia, and addresses fan questions about scripted lines, Mahone's uneasy ally status, and the ensemble/Ocean's-style shift. Throughout the Draculae miniseries, about the Swedish and Icelandic translations of Dracula that played fast and loose with the original text, I've been wondering a couple of questions: why are cover versions of songs and remakes of films so normal and acceptable, whereas cover versions in book form cause such a stir? And do these Scandinavian Draculae count as fan fiction? And if not, why not? Fansplaining.com's Elizabeth Minkel explains what fan fiction can mean.Visit theallusionist.org/transformation for more information plus a transcript of the episode. And though this is the fourth and last part of the Draculae miniseries, it is more inspired by than directly connected to the other episodes, so you don't have to listen to them beforehand. But do listen to them, they're very fun and intriguing!Content note: this episode contains some references to (but not descriptions of) sexual content and sex slavery. There is also mention of J.K. This episode is sponosored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss Prison Break S4E5 “Safe and Sound,” focusing on what they call the series' best scene so far: Pam Mahone identifying Wyatt and pushing Mahone toward revenge, praising the grounded performances and how the writing redirects Mahone's obsessive “monster-hunting” into something noble. They talk stunts and production, including Sara wanting to do the highway run but being stopped for insurance, the use of a stunt double wig, and “free boat” harbor background production value. They dig into Gretchen's off-camera “smell torture,” speculate what was in the bucket, and note her escape and new wild-card status, alongside Michael's nosebleeds suggesting a long-standing medical issue and his impulse to hide it from Sara. They compare Season 4's Scylla “horcrux” heist structure to The Sting's audience-information misdirection, discuss T-Bag's office con and Trishanne's leverage, answer fan questions contrasting Wyatt with Kellerman, and debate whether Michael could truly walk away from the fight against the Company. Hi. For our third and final Background Information Episode, Ty and Aidan, the hosts of Fun Factor, join us for an hour to flip through magazine reviews of Skies of Arcadia! All four of us are capping out RPG visuals at 8/10, receiving Golden Man location information, misunderstanding Duke Nukem's wants and needs, running the triple negative olympics, borrowing ideas from Final Fantasy, gibbering like mad fools, doing british accents, lamenting 128 bits, harkening back to early days, forecasting typos signaling prestige, disenchanting sourpusses, teetering on magnificence, creating Scott Steiner, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. The remainder of the episode features your normal hosts hacking out random battles, cameoing in other games, teasing a modern release, learning some optimization tricks, sharing memories, laying out expectations, counting stuff, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. Skies of Arcadia was easily the best RPG in the year 2000 for Dreamcast. Please check out Ty and Aidan's podcast Fun Factor, either here (https://funfactorpod.com) or wherever fine podcasts can be downloaded to the telephone. 00:00:00 Meeting New People 00:02:52 Intro 00:04:30 Contemporary Reviews (Featuring Fun Factor) 01:04:48 Modern Takes 01:07:11 Fan Fiction 01:08:23 MODS 01:12:17 Sequels & Cameos 01:21:44 Memories 01:23:53 Expectations 01:26:32 How Are We Playing This In 2026? 01:30:32 What Are We Counting? 01:34:09 Acknowledgements 01:34:38 Real Net 01:43:38 Outro Patreon: patreon.com/retroam Bluesky: @retrogradeamnesia.bsky.social YouTube: www.youtube.com/@RetrogradeAmnesia E-Mail: podcast@retrogradeamnesia.com Website: www.retrogradeamnesia.com

In addition to her career as an author, she also spent over 15 years as a beauty editor at magazines including Glamour, Lucky, and Essence. On this episode, Williams discusses what it was like working in print magazines during the Devil Wears Prada era, the financial decision to continue working her corporate job while writing novels, and why penning fanfic about her own life trained her to become a career author. In this episode, Sam is joined by friend of the pod Anika Jade Levy, author of Flat Earth and founding editor of Forever Magazine, for a sprawling investigation into the paranoid spirit of the United States of America. Beginning with the America's founding fantasy of paradise, Anika and Sam trace how the country's utopian dream soured into a national aesthetic of suspicion: from Puritan invisible enemies and the feminized conspiracy of the Salem Witch Trials, to the pastoral terror of data centers humming in the American wilderness, to cyberpunk stealthwear, urban camouflage, hollow earths, Atlantis, visions of a lost world, and much, much more. Drawing from Leo Marx, Richard Hofstadter, Adam Curtis, Cotton Mather, Anette Kolodny, Silvia Federici, and Anika's own novel, the girls move through history, politics, media, and fashion to uncover what conspiracy reveals about American self-invention. This episode is sponosored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah and Paul analyze Sara's storyline after learning Bruce Bennett was murdered, focusing on her relapse temptation, the specificity of the bar and bathroom scenes, and how performance choices are shaped by coverage, shot order, inner monologue, and avoiding “indicating.” Sara describes not planning emotional beats, sometimes playing against expectation, and how director Michael Switzer supported the work; they note a missed opportunity for Sara and Bellick to connect through recovery. Fan questions prompt Sara to reflect on returning to the show after maternity leave, balancing work with being a new mom, and using real-life strain in performance. They also discuss self-help/MLM parallels (Est, The Forum) and speculate about the show's GATE storyline and T-Bag's “Cole Pfeiffer” persona. Happy Anniversary to The Eastern Border! We are celebrating the madness of the post-Soviet space by watching the Russian Federation actively cannibalize its own economy in real-timeIn this masterclass of imperial decay, we track the massive Ukrainian drone strikes turning Russian oil refineries into atmospheric fireballs, forcing the Kremlin to burn billions of rubles just to subsidize domestic gasoline. Meanwhile, the Central Bank is choking the civilian sector with 21.5% interest rates, military commissars are flying out of windows in Rostov, and the real estate market is being propped up by "coffin money" from the frontlines. And if the physical collapse wasn't enough, there is the ideological rot: the state is prosecuting teenagers for insulting the Taliban, and we suffer through Vladimir Solovyov's self-published, megalomaniacal fiction novel where he gives himself superpowers and teleportation. The simulation is crashing.Donate to Ukraine, folks:https://car4ukraine.com/campaigns/summer-sunshine-trucks-2026-eastern-borderBecome our patron:https://www.patreon.com/theeasternborderMerch store + another option for memberships:https://theeasternborder-shop.fourthwall.com/Follow what's going on here in the very border of Eastern Europe:https://bsky.app/profile/theeasternborder.lvDownload all episodes for free on our website; pictures accompanying certain episodes can be found there as well!http://theeasternborder.lv/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/theeasternborder. This episode of PRISON BREAKING WITH SARAH & PAUL is sponsored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu (U.S.) and Disney+ (Internationally) Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss “Prison Break” Season 4 Episode 3 “Shut Down,” focusing on Milan Cheylov's directing, including the claustrophobic chase location, car-chase camerawork, sound design on Wyatt's torture scenes, and an overall rise in intensity and physicality (neck-grabs, head-slaps) across the episode. They note how period tech (PDA references and flip-phone texting) dates the story, debate how much exposition viewers need versus simply believing the characters, and riff on a proposed “Lincoln Bingo” game tracking Lincoln's recurring traits. They also talk about Mahone's darkness, commitment to finding his son's killer, and his value as the team's most dangerous asset, plus a running joke about hair length correlating with power. Guest Wilbur Fitzgerald (Bruce Bennett) reflects on playing a lawyerly, loyal confidant to Governor Raitt and Sarah, balancing acting with a long legal career (including helping create Georgia's film tax incentives), returning for season four, and crafting a restrained, non-corny “drugged” performance opposite Cress Williams; he shares that he wasn't warned his character would die and answers fan questions and a “Scylla Squad” prompt.
This episode of PRISON BREAKING WITH SARAH & PAUL is sponsored by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu (U.S.) and Disney+ (Internationally) Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss Prison Break episode S4E2 “Breaking and Entering,” sharing behind-the-scenes context about filming in LA (including San Pedro docks and a warehouse set built on the Fox lot), a more relaxed cast dynamic from being home, and their strong reaction to the episode's implied cannibalism involving T-Bag. They introduce and interview James Hiroyuki Liao (Roland Glenn), praising the “new energy” his character brings to the team, and he describes joining an established cast during his first recurring role, his intense preparation habits, and how welcoming the set was. Liao recounts an audition process shaped by era-specific casting biases, a same-day casting-to-producer session, and how producers and writer Zach Estrin helped shape Roland's Brooklyn specificity and informed him of his character's exit. He names his favorite scene as his death sequence and answers a “Scylla team” question by choosing his sister, best friend Matt, teacher Marjorie Ballantine, and the spirit of his mother. This episode is brought to you by Hulu. Stream PRISON BREAK on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Internationally. Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein kick off season four, explain the Patreon rewatch format and fan Q&A, and discuss “Scylla,” including the term's Greek-myth origins and related pop-culture references. They talk about how the show's compressed in-story timeline contrasts with its multi-year production, and go meta on the post–writers'strike pivot into season four, moving production to Los Angeles, and the challenge of keeping stakes believable when “the Company” feels all-powerful. Callies recounts returning after time away, renegotiating a new contract and raising pay-equity issues, feeling pressure around fan expectations and press attention, and reshooting a scene that played incorrectly with test audiences. They also discuss Michael and Sarah's reunion, Michael Rappaport joining the cast, and answer fan questions about Michael's willingness to kill, trauma-driven obsession, and who belongs on a real-life “Scylla squad.” For the full experience of enjoying Prison Breaking With Sarah & Paul, subscribe to our Patreon channel where you can watch Sarah & Paul's running commentary on Ep 306 while re-watching the episode on Hulu or your home DVD collection. Rob Long has a favorite story about network upfronts: a television network, unable to decide which of three pilots to schedule, flew all three casts to New York on the same plane, collected focus group results mid-flight, and met them at the gate — whisking some into Manhattan and stardom, and sending the others home. It contains everything you need to know about Hollywood: extravagant spending, procrastination and cruelty masquerading as efficiency. But here's the thing — the focus group never actually went away. It just moved to TikTok. And it's been telling Hollywood exactly what audiences want since approximately 1994. They just won't look. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
