It always lovely to welcome Montreal's Genevieve Racette back to the KKFI studios whenever she can make it to Kansas City; this visit was facilitated by Genevieve's attendance at the 2024 Folk Alliance International Conference.  Please excuse some background construction noise that may be discernible while she and I are having our conversation…Both the street in front of the station and our building itself is under some serious reconstruction to accommodate a street car line extension and new tenants. As a woman in the music industry, Genevieve prioritizes surrounding herself with like-minded women-identifying individuals, taking pride in the fact over 80% of her team consists of woman-identifying musicians and industry members.  She has showcased at prestigious music events such as Folk Alliance, Folk Music Ontario. Americanafest, Canadian Music Week and more.   Her fourth record, “Golden” is set to be released this Fall. Next up in the Folk Alliance 2024 Takeover… Arizona's Remi Goode is a trained classical guitarist and choral singer turned alternative folk/pop singer-songwriter. When she first decided to put her voice and guitar together and write original music, she quickly developed a style that highlights her careful classical sensibilities, pure vocal quality, and the distinctive sound of a nylon-string guitar. With an affinity for small arrangements and modest production, Remi's highest priority is lyricism. She writes with blunt honesty and introspection, searching for the root of the dynamics within a relationship or a deeper understanding of her own self-conception. Although Remi's analysis of herself and others is often unforgiving, her songs always contain a qualifying aspect of emotional ambiguity—an expression of both grief and acceptance at having to navigate a world that isn't black or white.    Enjoy  these conversations and performances in Episode 1 of the Folk Alliance 2024 Take Over of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast.

KEXP's Sound & Vision

The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers has published an open letter calling for higher pay for artists performing at SXSW. The letter says that over the past 10 years, showcasing artists have been paid either $250 dollars for a band, $100 dollars for solo artists, or get a free wristband for the festival. Letter organizer René Kladzyk (artist name: Ziemba) talks about the list of demands. Alaia D'Alessandro of the Seattle band Tres Leches talks about the prevalence of getting paid $250 at festivals, so much so, her band wrote a song about it called, “Two-Fifty.”   Meanwhile, two types of Visas that international artists use to perform in the US could cost around 250% more under a proposal from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Rosalyn Dennett, Executive Director of Folk Music Ontario, and Liana White, Executive Director of the Canadian Federation of Musicians talk about how these proposed changes could impact foreign musicians and U.S.-based venues.   A link for public comment: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/01/04/2022-27066/us-citizenship-and-immigration-services-fee-schedule-and-changes-to-certain-other-immigration#open-comment   Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He is the first to say that you do a lot of things you can do to figure out where you do best and gravitate there when you are starting.  He points to paying attention to the language you use yourself as it has the power to let you carry those behaviors. He talks about what music brings to him that Hockey did not and why he is so into it now. He also talks about Music Fit Collective and the revolutionary idea of how it came about.   What a good coach should be is what he lets everyone know about. Why there is value in getting a mentor shows how he regards having continuous education of oneself. He believes in rewriting rules and being successful; of living on the fringe and making things happen, and asking the right questions, not just someone who has all the answers. That's exactly how he lives his life, asking questions and getting the answers within to transform others' lives.  "That's where the language comes in: focusing on what you want, get more of what you want, because your words can work for you, or they can work against you."  - Mike Schwartz What you will learn from this episode: 03:23 - Mike's skate out song that completely elevates him 05:50 - A backstory of his hockey life 11:08 - A trait he learned in sports that spilled over to his business 13:51 - How saying yes to everything at the start makes you figure out what you want fast 15:38 - Language as an influence in the way that you carry out those behaviors  19:06 - Taking things as feedback and not being emotional about it 21:17 - Music in comparison to Hockey and how significant it is to him 26:33 - What is the epitome of a good coach 29:58 - Living with no rules and getting successful 32:15 - What is Music Fit Collective 39:16 - Taming unicorns 41;28 - Rewriting rules 43:10 - Writing your what-if story for more clarity 45:39 - Being the educator of musician wellness 50:20 - Greatest lessons mentorship teaches him 53:07 - Learning from real-world experience Connect with Mike Schwartz: musicfitcollective Instagram  Connect with Gavin McHale maverickcoachingacademy.ca LinkedIn Instagram

We spend a lot of time being told it's all about affirmations. You'll get everything you want if you just affirm it. I'm going to challenge that. I wanna introduce a concept called Interrogative Self-Talk - getting a conversation with ourselves going. It's super cool. Here's why: Our brain is wired to believe. So, how do we get to the place where we can believe in order to achieve? We gotta actually challenge ourselves. Rationally we then put into order and make sense of things and then work out a way to believe and therefore achieve. Try it out. Boom. Ottawa based singer-songwriter Jack Pine describes himself as an anything goes singer-songwriter with a heavy-handed string band. His 2017 album band with his band The Fire “Left To Our Own Devices” picked up a 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for New/Emerging Artist of the Year and a 2019 Juno nomination for best art work. An incredible live performer with a wonderful energy, and a very engaging style, Jack Pine sat down with Jan Hall from Folk Roots Radio at the 2017 Folk Music Ontario conference to chat about his music. In 2019, we had a follow up conversation at FMO, and this time around he played some songs live for us. For more information about the music of Jack Pine visit https://jackpinefire.com. Our interview with folk-pop cosmic balladeer Mister K went much further than we were able to share with you on Episode 491 of Folk Roots Radio. Check out the full interview below. Kevin Roy Kratsch spent five years on the road as country folk singer-songwriter Kevin Roy before re-inventing himself as cosmic balladeer Mister K, and starting work on “In Event Of Moon Disaster”, a folk-pop journey through the highs and lows of a mental health struggle, what Kevin describes as those 'Darker Days'. In Event Of Moon Disaster was created with producer and collaborator Rusty Matyas (The Sheepdogs, The Weakerthans, Imaginary Cities) who opened up about his own struggles with alcoholism prior starting work on the project. The two found support, inspiration, and empowerment while breathing life into these songs; a testament to the strength of healing through music and art. There have been three singles released from the album, so far: “Hundreds Of Dollars”, “Lonely One” and the latest, “Darker Days” – Kevin’s personal story and a song he hopes will be a conversation starter with respect to the importance of discussing mental health. The new single is being released on January 29 to coincide with Bell Let’s Talk Day. The full album will arrive later in 2020. Mister K sat down with Folk Roots Radio at the 2019 Folk Music Ontario conference to chat about the new project. For more information about the music of Mister K, visit heyheymisterk.com. Music: Mister K “Hundreds of Dollars” and “Lonely One” from “In Event of Moon Disaster” (2020, Self) and “Darker Days” (Live).

Our interview with Keri Latimer from Leaf Rapids went so much further than what we were able to include in Episode 489 of Folk Roots Radio. Check out our full in-depth conversation here. Keri and her partner Devin Latimer, formerly of Juno Award-winning alt-country quartet Nathan, released "Citizen Alien", their second album as Leaf Rapids in May 2019. Citizen Alien is a wonderful recording, that uses Keri and Devin's own family history to tell stories about the nature of identity and reflect on what it means to belong, in a world where more and more politicians are using populist nationalistic rhetoric to separate the ‘us’ from the ‘them’. According to Keri Latimer, "Every family has stories of people who crossed oceans, who survived, who struggled and tried. People who knew injustice. And though some of those stories now fade into the haze of time, the truth of them remains vivid. On Citizen Alien, the album’s title track, love declared by ancestors leads to separation through the travesty of Canada’s Second World War-era Japanese internment camps; if the same thing happened today, Devin and I would be split up, our children taken away." Keri Latimer sat down with Folk Roots Radio at the 2019 Folk Music Ontario conference for an in-depth conversation about her music and the new album. For more information about the music of Leaf Rapids, visit https://leafrapids.org. Music: Leaf Rapids "Dear Sister", "Citizen Alien", Barbershop Shears" and "There They Go" from "Citizen Alien" (2019, Coax Records) CDN.
