What Canadians pay for wireless service for the foreseeable future will be decided in the next few months and we discuss all of the possible futures at this hinge point.

It's Friday May 27th, 2022, and this is a look at the information security news from overnight. From BleepingComputer.com:Microsoft security researchers have found high severity vulnerabilities in a framework owned by MCE Systems that is used by Android apps. The vulnerabilities expose users to command injection and privilege escalation attacks. The apps have millions of downloads on Google's Play Store and come pre-installed as system applications on devices bought from operators including AT&T, TELUS, Rogers Communications, Bell Canada, and Freedom Mobile. Patches have been issued. From PortSwigger.net:Guzzle, the popular HTTP client for PHP applications, has addressed a high severity vulnerability leading to cross-domain cookie leakage. The flaw resides in Guzzle's cookie middleware, which is fortunately disabled by default, so most library consumers will not be affected. Drupel is one of the applications that use the third-party library and has released updates to address the issue. From CNN.com:A ransomware attack has forced officials in Somerset County New Jersey to switch off their computers and set up temporary Gmail accounts so the public can communicate with key agencies like health, emergency and sheriff's departments. The county says the attack has only affected email and IT systems and that phone lines and emergency service systems are all working properly. No word on the threat actor or specific malware involved. From BleepingComputer.com:The Austrian state of Carinthia has been hit by the BlackCat ransomware gang, who demanded $5 million to unlock their encrypted computer systems. Evidently thousands of workstations have been locked by the attack. The government says there is no evidence that BlackCat actually managed to exfiltrate any data, and that the plan is to restore the machines from backups. From ThreatPost.com:Multiple flaws have been found in Open Automation Software, a popular platform used by industrial control systems. The two critical and five high severity vulnerabilities could allow unauthorized device access, remote code execution, or denial of service that could ultimately threaten the stability of critical infrastructure. The flaws affect OAS Platform version 16.00.0112. See the full Cisco Talos report in the article. And last today, from BleepingComputer.comWindows previewed its upcoming cumulative update, which unfortunately has some compatibility issues with some of Trend Micro's security products, including the ransomware protection feature. The issue affects the User Mode Hooking component used by several Trend Micro endpoint solutions. The company is working on a fix to address this issue before the updates are pushed to all Windows customers as part of their June Patch Tuesday. That's all for me this week . Have a great holiday weekend. Take a moment to remember those that gave their last full measure to secure the freedoms of the rest of us. And until next time, be safe out there.

This week on the SyrupCast, Rose Behar and Igor Bonifacic are joined by Christine Dobby, telecom reporter at the Globe and Mail, and Daniel Bader, managing editor at Android Central, to take a look back the major Canadian telecom developments of 2017, with a focus on Freedom Mobile. A lot has changed over the course of 2017 in terms of Canada's telecom ecosystem. One of the most significant shifts in the space involves Canadian carrier unlocking fees being stopped by the CRTC. Freedom Mobile also underwent significant changes this year, with the carrier rebranding from Wind Mobile to Freedom Mobile, following Shaw's acquisition of the company back in 2015. With the CRTC unlocking fee ban recently going into effect, Freedom jumped at the opportunity to acquire new customers from the larger competitors in the Canadian telecom space. Freedom introduced a new, highly competitive plan that offered 10GB of data for $50, and in an unprecedented move, other major carriers and flanker brands responded with similar offers. The ensuing deal madness saw Canadians trying to take advantage of the offers being stuck in long lineups and customer service reps being overwhelmed with calls. Finally, and this may be the most important news of all, the Freedom Bear has officially retired. Tune in to hear the SyrupCast team's thoughts. The company has undergone drastic changes over the course of the past year, from handing off hardware production to TCL, to focusing its future on autonomous cars and software security, leaving the team to predict that 2017 will see a very different BlackBerry emerging from the embers. Staff writer Rose Behar selects the Samsung Note 7 to reminisce in her segment. Although Samsung had battery combustion problems with the Note 7, rumours regarding the impending release of the S8 are already circulating. MobileSyrup staff writer Jessica Vomiero does a deep dive into Canadian cybersecurity. Between rulings from the CRTC and the liberal government's approach to CSIS collecting data, the entire team agrees that 2017 will be a year where Canadians need to think carefully about their data privacy. Senior editor Patrick O'Rourke, in true Pokémaster fashion, brings Pokémon Go into the conversation as his favourite story of the year. Senior editor Igor Bonifacic directs the conversation to the successful year Microsoft has had. Apple has been at the forefront of the post-PC era, but 2016 saw releases from both Microsoft and Apple that hint at the end of Apple's reign.
