SEASON 2 - EPISODE 203 John Schwartzman - Cinematographer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer John Schwartzman (THE HOUSEMAID, THE HIGHWAYMEN, THE ROCK). John has worked on numerous high-budget, highly commercial films throughout his career, and we spend much of the episode discussing his approach to his work on those movies and his process overall. John's father, an entertainment lawyer for the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Hal Ashby, married into the Coppola filmmaking family while John was just a teenager, and we learn how John leveraged this connection and his skills at board games to win letters of recommendation from his uncle Francis Ford Coppola and friend-of-the-family George Lucas. We also discuss how John draws on his upbringing to help actors feel comfortable during a shoot, and he reflects on how he satisfies his creative needs in modern Hollywood. John also shares the pivotal pieces of advice he received from cinematographers such as Conrad Hall and Caleb Deschanel (Season 1, Episode 86) that instilled confidence in him, and we learn how and why he failed out of USC.

In 1977, George Lucas released the original Star Wars without any of the standard opening production credits. No studio card, no director credit, no scroll of names. Just the words "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." and straight into the story. Did you realize the Directors Guild actually fined him $250,000 for it? Lucas paid the fine. He cared more about the audience's experience than about who got named in front of it. We explore what it actually looks like to put the customer first in a real estate business, and why most agents say they do it but really don't. This conversations unpacks alot! We're re-releasing one of our favorite episodes from our archive: Caitlin and Charlotte discuss Leigh Brackett, the first writer of the sequel to 1977's Star Wars. Known as “The Queen of Space Opera,” Leigh Brackett worked with George Lucas to write a Star Wars sequel before it was called The Empire Strikes Back. Sadly, Brackett tragically died of cancer before completing the project and Lawrence Kasden was brought on — but several of her ideas and concepts made it to the screen. This was also the all-time best opening for the 30-year-old franchise. Disclosure Day took second place this weekend, though Toy Story practically beat its global take in the states alone, and Obsession and Backrooms continue their strong streaks coming in at third and fourth respectively.Universal and Blumhouse's Atomic Monster are jumping on the Curry Barker bandwagon having acquired the young director's third film in a reported eight figure deal. While Universal has been backing Barker, both Obsession and his upcoming film Anything But Ghosts are coming from Focus Features. Blumhouse has produced those same films, but this new move puts the horror powerhouse in a stronger position for film development. To tag onto the box office talk and remind you, Obsession was made for $750,000 and has now made more than $300 million worldwide - making it a tantalizing prospect for Blumhouse.Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Boroughs, a sci-fi TV series executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers. Harrow's best selling novel The Everlasting and will enter production on a series adaptation immediately according to Variety. The Everlasting is a time loop fantasy novel and was one of the best selling books of last year.Universal Pictures has announced that the next Illumination animated film will be Not Alone, an alien movie starring Timothée Chalamet & Selena Gomez which will release in April of next year. Dylan Clark's reboot of The Blair Witch Project for Lionsgate has landed a release date of September 24, 2027.Legendary has announced that a live action Magic School Bus movie is officially in the works with Elizabeth Banks set to play Ms. Frizzle.
