An Irish local gift card provider has achieved prestigious Guaranteed Irish accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to powering local communities. Town & City Gift Cards was awarded the accreditation by Guaranteed Irish in recognition of its work supporting communities across Ireland through its growing network of 16 local gift card programs. The local gift cards are branded to specific Irish towns and cities, and designed to amplify the local offering, drive in-person sales and lock spend into local communities. Town & City Gift Cards can be spent with a wide range of local businesses including shops, restaurants, hotels, attractions, salons and services, including big brands and independent businesses. Delivered by fintech Miconex, over €17.4m in gift card sales was achieved across the Irish Town & City Gift Cards network in 2025, set to drive an estimated 335,000 visits to high streets this year. Town & City Gift Cards are popular for consumer gifts and corporate rewards with an estimated 65% of 2025 sales from organisations purchasing local gift cards for employees. Miconex introduced digital and a dedicated corporate site in 2024 to enable organisations to easily reward their staff with local gift cards. The Guaranteed Irish accreditation for Miconex follows the January 2026 announcement of the Town & City Gift Cards initiative as the recommended local gift card program for Chambers Ireland members. In addition to supporting Irish chambers, local authorities and business improvement districts to deliver local spend for their business communities, the Guaranteed Irish accreditation recognises Miconex's position as a 'shop local' champion in the country. Melissa Cowman, membership manager at Guaranteed Irish, commented: "We are delighted to welcome Miconex as one of the 2,500 businesses licensed as Guaranteed Irish members, recognising its commitment to jobs, community, provenance and sustainability." Colin Munro, CEO of Miconex, said: "It is a proud moment for Miconex to receive this stamp of approval as a Guaranteed Irish business, reflecting the commitment of the Irish Town & City Gift Cards network to make local shopping the first choice, keeping money locked into Irish communities that would otherwise be spent online or outside of the country. Increasingly, organisations across Ireland are looking for a local option to reward their people where their reward spend also benefits the local economy. A Town & City Gift Card is the ultimate 'shop local' gift card, blending unbeatable local choice with unrivalled support for local." Mark Cunningham, business development manager for Miconex Ireland, said: "Guaranteed Irish is the national symbol of trust that helps consumers and businesses choose products and services that are better for their community. Town & City Gift Cards is the leading local gift card provider in Ireland, and becoming a Guaranteed Irish member adds reassurance for our clients, customers and partners that they are choosing a gift card that powers Irish business communities." Gift cards have a branding problem and it's costing the payments world a big idea. Alex Preece, CEO and Co-Founder of Tillo, joins us to make the case that gift cards aren't really “gifts” at all. They're programmable stored value, a modern redemption rail that can sit inside bank apps, fintech wallets, cashback programs, employee rewards, refunds, and payouts. Once you see them as a payment instrument, the market looks a lot less like novelty and a lot more like infrastructure. We dig into how Tillo built a two-sided marketplace that connects thousands of retail brands with the businesses that want to reward customers and employees. Alex explains why a single API matters in a fragmented global ecosystem, what it takes to support multi-country catalogs, and how better tooling and transparency can make brands more confident partners. We also talk about a surprising insight: most volume is self-use, not gifting, because people are optimizing everyday spending by converting earned value into higher-impact rewards. We zoom out to the bigger payments trends reshaping rewards and loyalty: the demand for real-time gratification, the opportunity created by open banking and faster payments like RTP and FedNow, and the emerging push toward “global but local” benefits that actually work when customers travel or live abroad. If you're building in payments, loyalty, or fintech growth, this is a practical look at where rewards infrastructure is heading and why it can change behavior at the moment of decision.

Patrick McKenzie (patio11) reads his classic Bits About Money essay on why your bank deposit is not what you think it is. He explains the capital stack that makes deposits appear riskless while funding genuinely risky businesses, and why the "no questions asked" property of money took the United States roughly a hundred years to engineer.Patrick updates the essay with commentary on SVB's collapse, the Voyager collapse and emergency injunctions about the finer points of ACH plumbing, and the GENIUS Act's stablecoin interest ban. He argues that crypto keeps rediscovering the same hard truth: things that behave like deposits without being deposits eventually break. When they break, they will break other structures they have wormed into, and they will tend to have wormed into a lot, because deposits are extremely useful and are perceived to never break.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/your-bank-balance-isnt-in-the-bank/–Presenting Sponsors: Mercury, Meter, & GranolaComplex Systems is presented by Mercury—radically better banking for founders. Defense lawyers for the man accused of killing activist Charlie Kirk say the bullet recovered in the shooting does not match the rifle tied to their client. Prosecutors say additional forensic testing is ongoing, setting up a major fight over evidence as the case moves closer to trial. TSA agents at Atlanta’s airport were told to return $1,000 gift cards handed out by Tyler Perry during the government shutdown. In this episode, we dive into a fascinating case of selective enforcement by the federal government. Michael shares a story about Tyler Perry giving away gift cards to TSA employees in Atlanta, while Denver International Airport was soliciting similar gift cards for their employees, raising questions about the fairness of the rules. We explore the concept of prohibited sources and how it relates to the situation, and discuss the implications of selective enforcement in government. It's a thought-provoking conversation that challenges the idea of ethics and fairness in government.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We would love to hear your feedback!A million-dollar GoFundMe for a DoorDash driver. Champagne requests inside an Uber. Robotaxis that stall out so often cities invent a new emergency category. That's the gig economy right now, and we're not pretending it's normal. We start with what drivers are actually seeing on the ground, then get into Uber Elite, a new premium rideshare tier pitched above Uber Black with meet-and-greet airport pickup and luxury “extras.” We talk through what counts as a “luxury vehicle,” how expensive this will get, and why platforms keep stacking new tiers while everyday trips feel worse. From there, we unpack the viral DoorDash story that's approaching $1M in donations and why crowdfunding is so unpredictable. We also hit the practical side of delivery work, including the hilariously painful “deliver an ice cream cone” problem, and then dig into gig worker pay data across apps like DoorDash, Grubhub, Walmart Spark, and TaskRabbit. We talk about active time versus real time, why customers pay more while companies take a bigger cut, and why tips make food delivery a totally different game than rideshare. We wrap with safety and policy: creepy driver messages that justify women-only matching, debates about decals and getting targeted, accessibility rules around service animals and wheelchairs, Waymo's growing impact on public resources, Amazon's push for one-hour delivery, and a skeptical look at Amazon Flex drivers trying to strike. Recurring revenue sounds smart. Memberships, prepaid packages, and gift cards can create a surge in cash flow for med spas — but without proper financial tracking, they can distort your profit margins, inflate revenue perception, and create operational risk. Listen here to learn how aesthetic practices can misinterpret cash injections as true growth — and what to track instead. If you're operating 1–2 locations and planning to scale, this conversation about healthy cash flow management for your aesthetics practice is critical. Are Gift Cards Creating False Revenue Expectations for Your Practice? Whether you run a med spa or a similar practice, you'll learn why simply chasing upfront cash isn't always the ticket to success—and how these models can create a false sense of profitability, throw off your capacity planning, and even compromise your ability to deliver services in the future. I'm revealing how a CFO tracks different income streams, forecasts cash flow, and helps you build sustainable financial habits, so you don't end up borrowing from your future business. Prepaid revenue can: Inflate top-line sales Hide future labor costs Distort margins Create scheduling unpredictability Mask capacity constraints "The issue with this, however, is when not done well or not done with this in mind, you're putting yourself at risk for a very distorted view of your sales, of your numbers, and not really making sound business decisions based on good data." - Shannon Weinstein To cut to the chase, cash in the bank does not equal earned revenue. Cash Injection vs. Sustainable Growth: Making Better Business Decisions We're seeing a huge trend in med spas and wellness practices: everyone's jumping on the recurring revenue train with memberships, subscriptions, gift cards, and prepaid packages. It sounds great on the surface—more cash in the bank, better sales numbers, right? But here are a few things you'll learn in this episode that might change your mind: Why gift card revenue is a future liability, not pure profit How prepaid packages distort med spa profit margins Why capacity utilization matters more than cash balance How to segment revenue categories properly in QuickBooks Why you should reconsider commission structures on prepaid sales How memberships affect enterprise value and predictability Protecting Your Aesthetics Practice from Recurring Revenue Traps and Misleading Data Collecting money upfront (especially around holidays with gift cards) can feel like winning. Who doesn't love a surge in revenue and a healthy bank balance? The catch is, those numbers don't always paint an honest picture. You might be thinking your marketing is working wonders, but really, your sales are getting propped up by gift card purchases. When it comes time to deliver the actual services, your costs catch up—and you don't have new income to cover them. If your med spa offers memberships, gift cards, or prepaid packages: Segment revenue by category (services, retail, memberships, gift cards, prepaid packages) Track redemption timing based on historical data Build a 6-week cash flow forecast including expected redemptions Measure revenue per provider and revenue per square foot Monitor capacity utilization instead of celebrating temporary cash spikes Evaluate LTV to CAC separately from prepaid sales I compare it to the GLP-1 weight loss trend: quick results, but they don't last unless your habits are solid. The same goes for business cash injections. If you don't have the right financial habits, you get a false sense of achievement that fades fast. Memberships and Prepaid Packages: Boost or Bust for Your Med Spa? If your monthly numbers look amazing, but you're just selling future services, don't rush to expand or boost sales goals. Before expanding, make sure your growth is real by evaluating the following: Are you mistaking cash injections for sustainable demand? Is capacity actually full — or artificially inflated? Are membership liabilities masking thin operating margins? Buyers and lenders look for predictable earned revenue — not volatile cash surges.
