A "Stressless”, "Fearless” life - Eliminating all fear and stress from life ain't gonna happen, BUT it is definitely possible to reduce the amounts of both...to "stress less", and "fear less". This week, I'm giving you the 5 keys to do just that…​ ​ Purpose What is your overall mission in life? What is the reason you're driven to get out of bed each day? If you don't know your purpose, that's okay. It will evolve and change over time, but defining a reason is important. Pick one. I believe our mission is to become the person God made us to be. Yours may of course be different, but will likely be some version of being the best you can - physically, spiritually, and financially. Gratitude Gratitude is a weapon! When you consciously acknowledge the things you're grateful for, you can overpower stress and fear. Gratitude is an incredibly powerful emotion and it's important to know the things you're grateful for so you can wield this weapon at will. Talk to Yourself More Than You Listen to YourselfOur thoughts can drift into territory that brings us down and can quickly spiral into catastrophic thinking if left unchecked. Be conscious of the thoughts you think…don't let them run on autopilot. Become the programmer - Don't run the program written by others. Growth and ContributionIn nature, you're either growing or dying…there's no middle ground. It is important to continue to grow as a human being and maintain a mindset (like the one described by Carol Dweck in the book, Mindset) that is conducive to that growth. According to Tony Robbins (and now accepted by many trained psychologists as truth), there are 6 basic needs that all humans must fulfil: Certainty: assurance you can avoid pain and gain pleasure Uncertainty/Variety: the need for the unknown, change, new stimuli Significance: feeling unique, important, special or needed Connection/Love: a strong feeling of closeness or union with someone or something Growth: an expansion of capacity, capability or understanding Contribution: a sense of service and focus on helping, giving to and supporting others The Combined Fulfilment of the Need for Connection and LoveWhy these two? The needs that Tony laid out are “basic necessities”...one is no more important than the other, BUT I believe focusing on these two as your “go to” needs, will give you the most satisfaction, reward, and positivity. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-18 (CSB)14 And we exhort you, brothers and sisters: warn those who are idle, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 See to it that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray constantly, 18 give thanks in everything; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Unpacking 3-Princples Concerning An Attitude of Gratitude:  Gratitude is always to be expressed “Rejoice always” (vs. 16a) commands that we are to have an ongoing attitude of gratitude.“Pray without constantly” (vs. 16b) suggests a mental attitude of prayerfulness, continual personal fellowship with God, and consciousness of being in His presence throughout each day. “Give thanks” (vs. 18) affirms that followers of Jesus are to be marked by thanksgiving.A grateful person will be a happier person.A grateful person will be a healthier person. NOTE #1: Gratitude is not an option; it is an obligation. Having an attitude of gratitude is never tied to what we have or who we are, it is a result of who God is and what He has done for us.   Gratitude should never be limited Paul says to give thanks ''in everything” (vs. 18) (not in most things or in good things.) Thanksgiving has nothing to do with feelings. We are not commanded to ''feel grateful.''  NOTE #2: Paul had been beaten, whipped, imprisoned, shipwrecked, stoned, and left for dead. Yet he said, ''give thanks in everything''  A Practical Outlook on Gratitude:Be grateful for the blessings of life- God's greatest blessings are oftentimes found in the smallest things.  Be grateful for the burdens of life - 2 Corinthians 4:15-16 says, “Indeed, everything is for your benefit so that, as grace extends through more and more people, it may cause thanksgiving to increase to the glory of God.16 Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day.” Be grateful for the benefits of life - Psalm 103:2 says, “My soul, bless the Lord,and do not forget all his benefits.” NOTE #3: We should be grateful for the blessings, burdens, AND the benefits! Gratitude is what's expected of us. (vs. 8) “Give thanks in everything; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”Gratitude is a real test of our character. Why An Attitude of Gratitude is Important:It will shield us from cynicism (suspicion/doubt). It will protect us from pessimism (negativity). It will draw us closer to God, and it will draw God closer to us! 1 Timothy 4:4-5 (CSB)4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 since it is sanctified by the word of God and by prayer. An Attitude of Gratitude says:In the happy moments…I will Praise GodIn the difficult moments…I will Seek GodIn the quiet moments…I will Worship GodIn every moment…I will Thank God

Pascale    --------------------- FULL TRANSCRIPT --------------------- Episode 350: Unlock True Happiness - 5 Steps To A Daily Gratitude Practice Hello, beautiful souls. I am Pascale Gibon, your host, welcoming you to episode 350 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. Since we are halfway through the year, let us dive into the importance of cultivating gratitude. All this means is that gratitude must become a customary practice in your everyday life and not just an occasional acknowledgement. The mindset you develop with appreciation is that life happens for and through you daily. When you are grateful every day, you acknowledge the daily blessings and remain in a positive energy and mindset. The more positivity you attract into your life through your attitude of mind and heart, the more blissful your life becomes. Robert Emmons, who is a proponent of gratitude research, defines gratitude as follows: An affirmation of goodness. A way for us to acknowledge that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. We are usually grateful to someone for something. Are there benefits to gratefulness? Recent mental health research found 35 benefits of practising gratitude regularly. According to current scientific studies, cultivating gratitude contributes to an individual's character development and overall well-being. There are many health and mental benefits to gratitude, to name a few: better quality sleep, boosted immunity, relieved depression, self-confidence, patience, optimism, resiliency as well as enhanced relationships. A regular practice of gratitude can lead to long-term emotional stability and contentment. Just imagine the effects of a grateful heart versus an ungrateful one. The former is loving and open, and the latter is contracted and resentful.  Practising gratitude daily improves our well-being and makes us stronger.  Gratitude leads to true happiness, and let me encourage you to make it a habit. As we go through our day-to-day lives, we usually take things for granted, and whenever things go wrong, we immediately fall into the trap that life is happening to us. Moreover, there is another trap: a mind drawn to negativity instead of positivity. It can be challenging to be grateful in a negativity-bias society. The media knows that sensational negative headlines sell more than positive ones. Since individuals are more attracted to negative news than positive ones, this reality prompts us to reinforce positivity in our lives with the gratitude practice. Another barrier to gratitude is comparing ourselves to others. When we compare ourselves to others, we fail to be grateful for what we have and our accomplishments. A comparison mindset leads to discontent, jealousy and a negative self-image.  So, how can we incorporate gratitude into our daily lives to enhance our character and well-being? Here are five ways to cultivate gratitude daily: 1. Gratitude Journal: Hold a gratitude journal and write down ten things you are most grateful for every day. Since this is a daily routine, it requires discipline and consistency. For this reason, I like the next practice if you fall out of the journal practice. 2. Verbal Gratitude: Make it a daily habit to say out loud what you are most grateful for in your life. It could be in the form of prayer. Additionally, make it a routine to acknowledge all the love you receive throughout the day. 3. Share your gratitude: Share your love with the people you are most grateful for in your life. You can write them a letter or tell them face to face.  4. Gratitude Meditation: Practise a gratitude meditation. As you meditate, reflect on the things you are most grateful for in your life. For example, bring the people to mind you appreciate the most in your life and send them gratitude. 5. Reframe Challenges: Reframe negative situations into positive lessons: Life happens, and we encounter challenging situations. However, you can take a deep breath and reframe the negative situation into a positive one. We express gratitude when we understand the lessons behind challenging situations that enable us to grow in wisdom and awareness. Those lessons are priceless.  As a practitioner of gratitude through daily prayer, I now also use gratitude throughout the day. Whenever I am aware of the expression of love, I appreciate that love and say “thank you” to the invisible and visible help I receive with appreciation.  It is proven that the attitude of gratitude has many psychological and physiological benefits. How could you incorporate more gratitude into your life? Would a gratitude journal or meditation work for you? Is expressing words of appreciation to others something you need to do more often? Do you need to send a letter to someone to let them know how much they helped you and how much you love them? Take a moment to reflect on gratitude and examine whether you have adopted an attitude of gratitude in your life to experience more positivity. If so, let me congratulate you. I wanted to do a special solo "Coach's Corner" episode today focusing on gratitude and how it impacts our health as we age.  I've actually covered gratitude in a few past episodes that are worth mentioning again: - Back in March 2021, I interviewed Debbie Waynez and we talked about how intentional gratitude helped her journey from profound grief to absolute joy. Let's explore why it's so critical to our health and how we can make it a daily practice. The Transformative Power of Gratitude - Gratitude goes far beyond just saying thanks - it's a state of appreciation and noticing the blessings we do have. - Research shows grateful people suffer less aches and pains, report better health, tend to sleep better at night, and have decreased feelings of anxiety, frustration and envy. - Gratitude helps us better weather life's inevitable ups and downs with resilience, self-worth and deep spiritual connectivity. 3 Ways to Build a Gratitude Practice 1. Keep a Gratitude Journal - Take a few minutes each day to write down a short list of things you're grateful for. The key is consistency with this exercise.  - Try the 30 Day Challenge where you write down 3 new things you're grateful for every single day. It gets harder as the days go on, which builds your awareness. 2. Incorporate Gratitude Meditation/Prayer  - No need for structured meditation - take brief moments during your day to pause and appreciate things around you.  - Prayer works too! Personally I start and end each day with short gratitude prayers which grounds me and helps me sleep. 3. Express Gratitude to Others - Tell people in your life what they mean to you. Write thank you notes. Verbal appreciation strengthens relationships. - There are also great gratitude apps available with prompts and reminders. And leverage technology to build community around gratitude. Remember it takes consistency and you will have ups and downs. But pick one or two gratitude practices that work for you and give them an honest try. I promise you will start to notice positive changes! Gratitude transforms lives in profound ways. It could be in person or how about a virtual lunch via zoom. #1  MORNING ROUTINE: Why not take time to start your day on your terms.  During this time you could read, spend time Spiritually, meditate or journal.  It has been said this is the one time you can spend time on yourself.  Remember if we don't take care of ourselves, we can't take care of others. Gratitude: Gratitude is the experience of counting one's blessings. It is the feeling that embodies the word “Thank You”. It is the unexpected reward of a kind deed that is magically produced by your brain. A 2003 study by Emmons and McCullough found that keeping a daily gratitude journal leads to not just an increased sense of well-being but also better sleep, willingness to accept change and also help and lower symptoms of physical pain. As it turns out, gratitude could be the ultimate magic pill for happiness.
