This epsiode of Research to the Classroom miniseries focuses on the practice of daily review and retrieval, why we might do it, what it might look like, and what it's like to implement it in a school. What is Research to Classroom? As a teacher, you have likely not had the advantage of examining research in your teaching degree and now that you're in the classroom or leadership position, you probably find it hard to find the time and head space to spend time reading papers and articles. I know that when I was in school full time as a teacher and a leader, I really didn't have a chance to do that. So, I hope that these mini series of episodes help you bridge the gap between research and practice. They're made up of three episodes. Number one is an outline of the research. Number two is a discussion of their practical applications of the findings of the research, and number three is a chat with a real life teacher who shares the positive aspects and challenges of being right there with kids in front of them in the classroom. In this episode, we chat about daily review with David Morkunas, current head of teacher efficacy at Brandon Park Primary School, previously a teacher at Bentleigh West Primary School. David Morkunas is a primary school teacher from Melbourne and currently works at Brandon Park Primary School, where his role is to help support whole school improvement in maths. David first made a name for himself by speaking about the importance of Daily Review at conferences, including Sharing Best Practice and ResearchED. David is a fierce advocate for evidence-based teaching and learning, with a particular interest in how knowledge is transferred to long-term memory. Bill first met David as a graduate teacher while running the Bentleigh West Primary School Study Tour for South Australian educators, and he and David have remained in touch since. Show notes In this episode, Michael and Bill talk with David about something very close to all our hearts – review. Anybody working in the explicit (direct) instruction and evidence-informed instruction space has become familiar with the importance of deliberately planned and scheduled review of previously learned material. For educators new to review, it's a case of “Where have you been all my life?” Once maligned as non-progressive ‘rote learning' or ‘drill and kill' in teaching circles, review has come back to classrooms with a vengeance, and teachers are seeing the difference in student learning outcomes. Review is strongly supported by evidence and features in Barak Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction. We cover a wide range of topics and ideas in this episode. David mentions EDI (Explicit Direct Instruction) as an instructional method used at his previous school, Bentleigh West Primary School. The conversation moves to the role of review for transferring new information into long-term memory. Bill mentions a Research Ed talk by Emeritus Professor John Sweller (the father of Cognitive Load Theory), which discusses the narrow limits of change principle, a master stroke of evolution which made working memory a protective mechanism for long-term memory due to its extremely limited ability to deal with novel information, thus making it very difficult for new information to change long term memory without multiple repetitions. Shortly after, David mentions Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve, a famous model teachers use to explain the importance of spaced reviews to lessen the rate at which newly learned information degrades over time after being first learned (flatten the curve of forgetting). The importance of gaining and holding student attention first and foremost is discussed, and David mentions an episode of the ERRR podcast where the importance of having students pay attention is discussed and how this supersedes any other instructional/pedagogical considerations. OCHRE Education gets a few mentions from as a source of materials schools can use if they aren't building their teaching materials in-house. The difference between active review and students just reciting what is on a screen is discussed. David explains that students must actively pull something (retrieving) from long-term memory in active review. This distinction is explored, and David mentions a conversation with Ingrid Sealey from Teach Well that changed some of his thinking on how to structure the review. Spaced retrieval apps are mentioned as a way for us (grownups) to learn new things. One such app is Anki, which both David and Bill have used. Next, the question of when to review is tossed around, and David, Michael and Bill search for the holy grail – some rule of thumb or algorithm that tells us when the best time to review information is. Bill talks about how, in the Playberry Laser Literacy Program, he and his colleagues are always thinking about how to achieve the review sweet spot. Success comes up as the driver of student attention and genuine motivation. David, Michael and Bill discuss how Australia's infatuation with making learning fun instead of focusing on effective teaching has had disastrous results. David talks about digital tech and books by Cal Newport, one being “Deep Work”, which talks about all of us (adults and kids) needing to cultivate the ability to concentrate for long periods to create good things in the world. David mentions a podcast episode by Greg Ashman on student motivation. David's presentation for LDA is well worth a watch David's Webinar on Spaced, Interleaved and Retrieval Practice for LDA is worth watching. Playberry Laser has some lessons up online where review can be seen in action, as well as some other excellent teaching at St Francis School Lockley's South Australia. Comments and questions are welcome! If you're an educator, we would love to hear about your experiences with integrating structured daily review into your teaching. If you have a child in a classroom or school where daily review has been implemented, we'd love to hear about your impressions.

In August of 2022, a 33-year-old woman traveled to her hometown in Louisiana from Colorado to purchase a car. But on the road trip back, she called her dad explaining that she was lost, and was having trouble with both her cell service and her GPS system. After the call dropped and her family didn't hear from her again, she was reported missing…only for her car to turn up abandoned in a different state. This is the story of Caitlyn Case. Today, I want to talk to you about an issue that has had me with a bee in my bonnet for a little while now, and that is the large amount of time that many children spend in independent silent reading during literacy instruction. Now my challenge with this is not that it is bad for children to read on their own; in fact, we know that there are positive impacts. Professor Pam Snow from La Trobe University often says that once children become proficient decoders, their independent reading has much to add to their vocabulary and language development. So I'm not here to tell you that reading is bad for kids. Quite the opposite. But I will suggest that there are more efficient and effective ways that students can spend time during that block of the school day that is allocated as literacy instruction time. Spelling Success in Action 2 - Prefixes and Suffixes is now available for pre-order. Morphology is important to teach our students. It improves spelling, vocabulary, comprehension and knowledge about parts of speech. Our program covers instruction from words to sentences with differentiated content. On this 188th episode of my Monday Morning Pep Talk, I will continue Take Flight V4.0 by starting the modules in Section 2 of this training program. 2 weeks ago, we wrapped up the modules that covered the areas like "The Mind", "Mindset", "Elimination", "Creating Your 3 Vision", "Developing a Planning Strategy" and "Daily Review of Your Vision". We referred to this as the "Cockpit" of your aircraft. In Section 2, we'll talk about areas that make up the "Tail". The tail of the aircraft provides that stability and lift needed to "Take Flight" and get to 30,000 feet. This second section of the course will take us through the majority of Q2 where you'll see tops discussed on Systems, Processes, Habits and Routines used by ELP's and super achievers to create businesses and lives that are predictable and enjoyable. They will help you stabilize your business so you can see the consistent growth in your business that you desire and take away the emotional peaks and valleys the 97% see regularly.

What's it like to be stepping back into a classroom after your summer break and a new class? Nerve-wracking, I am sure, but I know as dedicated teachers you wouldn't have it any other way. The start of term is a fresh start, a clean page and we hope gives you a real buzz of excitement. What things can you do to cope and plan for your fresh start and it's a question that Helen Morgan, a previous Head of School, and now an education consultant, and Andy Bridge, a current Deputy Principal, Lead Associates of Thirsty Scholars Partnership are considering. Stepping into the classroom whether you are new to teaching or an established teacher on the first day of term is TOUGH, even in a normal academic year. Helen and Andy share experiences of their times as new teachers and having worked with a vast amount of teachers, encouraging them to take their first or next steps into the classroom. Helen and Andy's go-to framework is Barak Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction which we will be exploring in these episodes. In this episode, we start at the beginning with Step 1 and discuss the value of "Daily Review." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thirstyscholars/message
In Victorian England, fishing all manner of filth, detritus and human body parts from the Thames River in London was not such an unusual affair. Used for centuries as a dumping ground and waste disposal, it became so bad by the mid 19th Century that it was renamed “The Great Stink”. In 1879, a coal porter pulled out an old wooden box and unearthed one of the more macabre treats the river has tossed up over the years when he opened it to discover a heavily mutilated body. The mutilations might have been somewhat notable, but far more so was the killer, who once tracked down was found to be a woman, a fact that rocketed it straight into the spotlight of public attention. I recently read one of the best Buddhist meditation books I've ever come across. The book is The Mind Illuminated. The author of this book, John Yates, aka Culadassa, has a Ph.D. in neuroscience and over 50,000 hours of meditation practice in the bank. It's the kind of book that exudes expertise on every page. In the appendix of TMI, Culadassa shares a technique called “The Daily Mindful Review,” which is the best method he has ever discovered for increasing mindfulness in daily life. I went ahead and adapted this to add Stoic elements, and the result is what I consider to be the most powerful guided reflection I've ever created. Do this daily, and you will be astounded about the changes you make in the next 30 days. Those changes will include: More mindfulness Less heaviness Better decisions Drastically better relationships Improved habits More compassion And the list goes on… ----MY FREE COURSE:
Today on the show we have Sophie Black – a life-long journalist & writer currently in the role of the Head of Publishing at The Wheeler Centre, and Mum to two kids named Walter & Maggie.Sophie has had a brimming career, including working on the multi-award-winning podcast, The Messenger, the ABC Radio National program, Talkfest, and heading up titles such as Crikey, Daily Review... I could go on. In today's conversation, Sophie talks about how deeply life and parenthood bleed into work, managing to continue her incredibly successful career whilst growing and raising two humans, being cured of her lifelong affliction of FOMO, and the painfully solitary experience of secondary infertility & the IVF process. TW: This is an episode that may be sensitive to people who are experiencing fertility issues, and or miscarriage. I think the story and experiences that Sophie shares are incredibly valuable for those supporting friends and/or family through these issues and perhaps even for some people experiencing similar things to feel validated for their emotions and pain. So it is a worthwhile listen if you are feeling up to it. If you’re like so many online entrepreneurs I talk with, you are most likely a planner. And this season of planning is one of my favorites all year long. Today I want to chat about the benefits of planning, and then how I put planning into action in my business based on everything I learned over the years of running marketing teams. 1. Saves you time by keeping you focused Studies show that 1 hour of planning will save you 10 hours of doing. That’s a great ROI for your time, and if you weren’t taking planning seriously before, hopefully this stat will help you create a planning habit for yourself. 2. Keeps your business moving forward Set goals to push boundaries and gives us space to think about what’s possible 3. Know what’s working Gives us something to benchmark against Often I find if you’re not sure if something is working, it’s because you didn’t have a plan that included goals of what working means to you How to put planning into action: Annual Revenue Goals + Budget > Impact Goals [there’s more about this in episode 10] High-level calendar - launches! Quarterly Budget review Weekly Content - set topics for the next quarter [learn how to put together a content calendar in episode 5] Social media themes assigned daily [don’t use themes in your business yet? Check out the details in my social media guide] Lead magnet review Monthly Batch schedule for content creation: Podcast, Lead magnets, Emails, Social media captions & graphics Check analytics: what’s working and what’s not, what’s popular Weekly Schedule social content Assign daily “top 3” tasks: projects + admin Daily Review schedule for day and adjust if needed Check in on emails twice a day (morning and evening) Spend time engaging with others on social: 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the middle of the day and 15 minutes at the end of the day Want to start the year off strong? Emma and Chloe discuss the recent election result in Australia and what it means for the environment. What should people worried about climate change do now? To explore that question, they go back and look at former PM Bob Hawke’s environmental legacy and the role he played in saving Antarctica from mining. They discuss how environmental wins come about and how the landscape has changed since Hawke. How do we talk about climate change today and why isn’t that translating into action? What kind of communication works, and why? Why are we so obsessed with market solutions and tech billionaires? Chloe goes deeper into a discussion of the role of social movements, and what the long historical threads of nonviolent action might tell us about the way forward.Reading ListOn environmentalism and climate change:Micha Frazer-Carroll, “On environmentalism, whiteness and activist superstars,” gal-dem, 25 September 2019http://gal-dem.com/on-individualism-whiteness-and-activist-superstars/?fbclid=IwAR2nZWGp9zqK04FGukcFIddz1HTLoQEWG5bDUPStAxwTIwMFG_18yl6TTRQMartin Gelin, “The Misogyny of Climate Deniers,” The New Republic, 29 August 2019.https://newrepublic.com/article/154879/misogyny-climate-deniersChristopher Jones, “The Delusion and Danger of Infinite Economic Growth,” The New Republic, 2 October 2019.https://newrepublic.com/article/155214/delusion-danger-infinite-economic-growthBill McKibben, Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? The shooter stole $20 dollars from Arthur and was never found. After a 23-day battle in a medically induced coma, Renowitzky woke on Christmas Eve day to learn he would never walk or talk again. That news inspired him to fight paralysis by spreading spinal cord injury awareness and gave him the “line in the sand” against youth violence; Renowitzky knew the best route was to create his nonprofit, LGO, and aggressively spread his message of overcoming adversity. In recognition of his work, Renowitzky was named a Home Town hero by the Bay Area News Group for the summer of 2009 and also received a citation of appreciation from the Oakland Mayoral Council Against Violence that same year. Arthur has been featured sharing LGO on media outlets such as ABC Los Angeles, KTVU Bay Area, CNN, Hot Talk New Radio 560, Daily Review, Oakland Tribune, Chronicle Live. Renowitzky has also presented his story to over 130 California high schools and middle schools, as well as juvenile halls, disciplinary camps, Boys & Girls Club(s), YMCA(s), Oakland City Hall, Hollywood events, churches and many hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, reaching an estimated 100,000+ youth. This week, Scott Morrison is going to Washington--or is it Mar-a-Lago? In anticipation of the Australian PM’s state dinner with Donald Trump, Emma and Chloe look back on the history of American-Australian relations. From the ANZUS treaty to Iraq (and detouring through conspiracy theories, Gough Whitlam, and the CIA), Australia has a track record of following the US everywhere it goes, including into war. With Trump ‘locked and loaded’, Emma and Chloe ask whether history repeating, and will Australia find itself at war in Iran?Reading ListOn Trump and Morrison/the US in the World:Dexter Filkins, “The Moral Logic of Humanitarian Intervention,” The New Yorker, 16 September 2019.https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/09/16/the-moral-logic-of-humanitarian-interventionElaine Pearson, “Trump’s Attack on Asylum-Seekers Was Made in Australia,” Foreign Policy, 24 July 2019https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/07/24/trumps-attack-on-asylum-seekers-was-made-in-australia-png-manus-island-nauru-new-zealand-refugees-offshore-detention/Tanya Levin, “What Scott Morrison’s faith means,” The Saturday Paper, Edition No. 261, July 13-19, 2019https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/opinion/topic/2019/07/13/what-scott-morrisons-faith-means/15629400008440Jeffrey Goldberg, “The Obama Doctrine,” The Atlantic, April 2016https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/04/the-obama-doctrine/471525/“America’s ‘credibility’ is not the problem here,” Crikey, 31 October 2017.https://www.crikey.com.au/2017/10/31/yale-diaries-americas-credibility-is-not-the-problem-here/“The History of the USA and Australia’s Love In – and Turnbull’s Grovelling,” Daily Review, 6 May 2017.https://dailyreview.com.au/history-great-relationship-australia-us-love/59439/“Trump, Syria and the Irrelevance of History,” Daily Review, 15 April 2017.https://dailyreview.com.au/trump-syria-irrelevance-history/58522/“Teaching History in TrumpWorld,” Daily Review, 4 March 2017https://dailyreview.com.au/teaching-history-trumpworld/56534/On handshakes:Adam Boult and Chris Graham, “Justin Trudeau's handshake with Donald Trump the 'biggest display of dominance in the history of Canada',” The Telegraph, 14 February 2017.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/13/justin-trudeau-becomes-latest-world-leader-brave-trumps-awkward/On Whitlam:Christopher Knaus, “Whitlam dismissal 'palace letters' case wins right to be heard by high court,” The Guardian, 16 August 2019https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/aug/16/battle-over-whitlam-dismissal-palace-letters-heads-to-high-courtGuy Rundle, “All facts point to US involvement in the Dismissal,” Crikey, 13 November 2015 [$].https://www.crikey.com.au/2015/11/13/rundle-all-facts-point-to-us-involvement-in-the-dismissal/James Curran, “How Whitlam rattled the ANZUS alliance,” The Monthly, August 2012.https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2012/august/1348618116/james-curran/dear-mr-presidentOn the US and anti-Semitism in the UK:Owen Jones, “Fighting smears and the antisemitic minority in the Labour party,” 8 March 2019https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Qxk0hW0_EQ&feature=youtu.be
We have both a conscious mind, the stuff we know, and an unconscious mind, the stuff we don’t know we know. The unconscious is by far the stronger of the two…The unconscious should be credited with far more than it typically is…It’s what controls our fate…Fate is nothing other than the events that occur due to the governing forces of our unconscious. It’s the tiger and we’re the tail… The black hole of our unconscious includes our petrified wrong conclusions about life, our destructive patterns of behavior, and our negative emotions caused by our unresolved problems. All this we have stuffed down in there and forgotten about…Our unconscious is a repository for the constructive building blocks of the universe too—unending creativity, utter wisdom, divine truth and love. Yessiree Bob, it’s all in there… Let’s now learn how to go about interpreting the language of our unconscious in our daily lives…Knowing this particular language will do more for us than knowing a dozen foreign Earth-languages… The universe is made up of two main currents: a yes-current and a no-current. The yes-current contains all the good stuff; it aligns with truth and it breeds love and unity. The no-current deviates from truth and is destructive; it breeds hate and disunity…Of the two currents, we tend to spot the yes-current more readily because it is mostly conscious. But when we bump up once again against a persistent unfulfillment, we can be sure that there are both a yes-current and a no-current at work, effectively cancelling each other out… The more we squelch the no-current, thinking this will drive it out of existence, the more we simply drive it further underground where no logic can oppose it. This is how it becomes more powerful than the conscious yes-current. This also causes the yes-current to become more urgent and frantic…The way to defuse all this is by surfacing the no-current, listening to its faulty premise, and gradually letting go of the mistaken belief that it needs to continue… What we need to do is circle back to doing our Daily Review, doubling up on our efforts to detect the no-current. If we don’t do this, it may be almost too elusive to catch…We’ll start to see how we cringe slightly at the thought of having fulfillment within our grasp…Maybe we’re not willing to pay the price for having it. Maybe we don’t feel we deserve happiness. The problem could be any combination of these things… Simply becoming aware of the perpetual drip of our no-current—even before we understand what it’s all about—will deliver much-needed relief from the water torture of our hopelessness…We’ll pinpoint where our hostility is smoldering, artfully camouflaged or explained away by the easy-to-blame provocations from others. These are the mechanisms we need to learn about, because they are the language of the unconscious. To successfully spot them is to successfully decipher the code of this ancient dialect…This is how we crack the no-current… We can start to look at frustrations and difficulties as helpful pot stirrers. For if nothing ever happened to stir the po

"Hollywood is the great value-dictator of our time." - Amos Gebhardt The third episode of our season on belonging and exclusion is here, and this month we are conversing across many disciplines, and setting a record with the number of voices featured. Our guests are writer and performer Candy Bowers, artist and filmmaker Amos Gebhardt, and playwright and theatre-maker Chi Vu, three artists who have challenged the dominant narratives of gender, culture, and race both in their work, and as prominent public speakers. In this episode, recorded at FCAC and moderated by RMIT Deputy Dean of Media Lisa French, our guests speak about the female gaze on stage and screen, and what to do with Jill Soloway when being woman-identifying is only one of the parts of your identity. "So I worked on a play called Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee last year at MTC. And I thought what was extraordinary with that play is that - I really don't think Melbourne is at the same level regarding consciousness and dialogue in regards to whiteness and privilege - more than half of the audience saw one play, and all the intersectional feminists saw a different play. Literally, people laughed at different jokes. I read the play and I thought it was so funny straight away, and most of the guys I was working with, including the director, didn't think it was funny, didn't understand it. And I thought: 'This is a really clear case study in the fact that I've lived a life reading between the lines, and they've lived a life on the line. The line has been for them'." - Candy Bowers This panel ‘Female Gaze on Film and Stage’ was originally recorded as part of the program for WOW Melbourne at FCAC, and was presented in partnership with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. It’s the very end of summer in Melbourne, it's a lovely Thursday afternoon, everyone is just settling in for an afternoon of discussions. It's a beautiful conversation: it is a rare occasion to hear some distinguished voices of the Australian independent arts speak about the intersectional experience in a space that is safe and expansive, outside of the carnival of outrage and provocation that so often greets those who speak about diversity. Discussed in this episode: decolonising ourselves, Jill Soloway, inclusivity and being included, very small paths, being Best Female Performer for playing a straight man, what is cultural safety?, how bilinguals are not like two monolinguals in the same body, Back to Back Theatre, creating little worlds, what's wrong with make-up artists in Australia?, and the female gaze. "As an artist, creating a culture of safety, however you define it, is the only way you can make work over a long term." - Chi Vu Bibliography: Jill Soloway on The Female Gaze, Master Class, TIFF 2016 Ben Neutze: Candy Bowers on Australian Theatre's White Patriarchy: Burn it Down, The Daily Review, Oct 2016 Ben Neutze: Review: Lilith the Jungle Girl, The Daily Review, Sep 2016 Stephanie Lai: Review: Coloured Aliens by Chi Vu, Peril, Apr 2017 Dylan Rainforth: Amos Gebhardt's Nude Portraiture Celebrates Difference, The Age, Feb 2016 You can subscribe to Audiostage on iTunes or any number of Android platforms, friend us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter. G'day, this is Ken Simpson, and welcome back to Beyond the Black Stump for 2016. Despite January being almost over, I guess it is still appropriate to wish listeners a Happy New Year. This is Episode 20 of the show that I launched back in September last year. This episode was originally supposed to be published 2 weeks ago on the 8th of January - but I have been a little slow getting back into things this year. Traditionally many use this time of the year as a trigger to reflect on the last 12 months, and to plan for the year ahead. That's what this week and next weeks shows are about - ideas about how we view, plan and achieve our objectives. First, and most importantly, Thank you to all those who have listened to the show during 2015, and a special thank you to those who have offered feedback. You are the people who make it all worthwhile. Also thank you to those practitioners who took the time to talk to me and share their ideas and experience with the wider community. When I checked the stats on 21st January there have been 1,352 downloads of the show, and the randomness of what show is downloaded and when highlights the value of this on-demand content. It doesn't matter when I record or release the show, it is there when you want to listen. The most popular shows, or perhaps the most popular or best connected guests, have been Episode #9 with Jason Gotch (102 downloads), closely followed by Episode #5 with Rina Bhakta (101 downloads), then Episode #3 with Nat Forbes at 95 downloads. Even the least listened to show drew 40 downloads, which is still good to see. And of course that show, and all the others are still there for anybody to download and listen in the future. When I started my blog back in 2009, if I got any hits on a post it was special. Today I have over 300 posts on my blog, and if I get 40-100 hits on a post that is still pretty special. So thanks again for your support. It was also great to meet so many people in the real world this year. I was fortunate enough to get to three really good conferences and took those opportunities to discuss ideas face-to-face. In April I got to catch up with US colleagues at Continuity Insights Management Conference, which has been a great event both times I have attended. Then towards the end of the year I was able to get over to the BCI World Conference where I had the opportunity to present and discuss old and new ideas around the future of our practice. Great to see so many international people at that event - and a very much improved event over my previous visit. In between there was the Australasian BC Summit - which frankly has grown into one of the best international events. Plenty of different and challenging ideas presented, and we can learn a little about what is being planned for the 2016 conference on the show next week with Glen Redstall. But enough reflection, let's start thinking about 2016 - and here is a challenge to you for your own development. Have you looked at your personal development plan for the year? Have you planned to attend any conferences? More importantly, are you planning to attend any conferences or development opportunities outside the discipline? A narrow focus will ensure you build fragility and vulnerability - even if that narrow focus is on the discipline of Business Continuity. Resilience is a multi-disciplinary endeavour. Let's focus back on what we want to achieve in the next 12 months - we all get the same allocation of time, 525,600 minutes. In fact in 2016 you get a bonus 1,440 minutes as it is a Leap Year! What do you want to achieve with your allocation? Have you made a "resolution" to change or improve some aspect of your thinking or practice in 2016? Recently I read an article in the Washington Post reporting some research that about 45% of people have abandoned their "New Year Resolutions" by the end of January. I hope you are not one of them. I guess I was always fairly bad with those resolutions - vague and aspirational things like "I am going to get fit this year", or "I am going to lose weight". About 6 years ago I heard about an alternative method, which has worked for me and you may find the idea useful. It is a technique I picked up from a guy named Chris Brogan, and will I link to several posts where I have written about the idea in the Show Notes for those who want details. Instead of the traditional "resolutions" identify 3 words that you use to focus your efforts, thoughts and activities each day. The words are brief and can be read quickly. The value is in the meaning that you, and you alone, have assigned to those words. Let me use my own focus words for 2015 to illustrate the technique. Remember this is about the meaning that we assign to our focus words - the words do not have to have the same power for anybody else. For 2015 my three focus words were; 274 Time Value Ok, technically 274 is a number but this is how it works. It reminded me everyday (because it is at the top of my Daily Review checklist) that my first focus in 2015 was to create a significant body of work. I defined that to myself as 100,000 words, which breaks down to 274 words every day. At the time I was thinking mainly around traditional writing and publishing. But during the year I resolved to launch this show, it became my primary vehicle for delivering that significant body of work. The focus remained, the goals and activities needed to deliver changed. For those of you who are wondering - yes I hit well over that target over the year. If you want to delve into the meaning I attached to the other words, the blog post is linked in the Show Notes. For 2016 I have modified my focus and chosen 3 new words. Content Community Professionalisation As I said earlier, last year I started to move away from the written word (primarily my blog and the Resilience Ninja Newsletter) to an audio podcast as a primary platform. This year I want focus on a range of different forms of content, more Webinars, some online courses and perhaps some video podcasts. "Content" also works as a reminder to focus on the audience and what they might find useful. David Linstedt who you met in Episodes 10 & 11 of the show has some good video podcasts you might want to check out. Link is in the show notes. And that is an example of my second focus. Community - is both the focus to build a community around the show, the newsletter and the ideas being discussed in the various content - plus a focus to promote the idea that no single person, profession, discipline or body of knowledge can build a resilient organisation on their own. No single discipline owns the concept. To borrow and adapt a slogan - It takes a village to build and maintain resilience. Encouraging thinking and removing the limitations we impose on our own ideas - the core objective of this show - is an essential enabler to breaking down the barriers and silos between the various disciplines that sit in the resilience field. This year that will mean talking with more practitioners from outside the legacy BC space, and sharing their ideas and thoughts around the concept of resilience and how to progress it. Perhaps we may even encourage a "community of practice" to grow around resilience. Finally, and this is probably going to be the controversial one, Professionalisation. I have never viewed BC as a profession, I still don't. But perhaps it is time to focus on what the professionalisation of BC would look like, or what changes might need to occur for that to happen. This last focus are is inspired by the theme of the BCI Australasian Summit – from practice to profession. This focus word represent a research project for the year. I don’t know yet what the goals and steps along the way might look like yet. More about this focus area in future posts as the project unfolds. Next week on the show I will be talking to Glen Redstall about the 2016 Australasian Summit and he will be sharing 3 words that he thinks could be applicable across the discipline. What is your focus for 2016 and what will tools or techniques you use to guide your actions? If you have suggestions come and add them to the show page on the Black Stump LinkedIN group. Whatever you want to achieve here are two ideas that might help you. The first idea is best explained in the word of Ken Blanchard; “There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses - only results.” If really want to achieve change in 2016, you need to be committed to it, not just thinking it might be a good idea. You also need to ensure you can maintain your commitment to your commitment! It needs ongoing work and effort. If you need ideas to take things down a level and focus on specific goal setting and achievement than subscribe to the Resilience Ninja Newsletter, it is free, but the content is not available to non-subscribers. The second idea comes from Steve Jobs. It is about finding your own voice and your own ideas. It is hard to remain committed to an idea or practice you never really accepted or saw the value of. This quote is from Job's famous 2005 Commencement speech at Stanford University - and rather than me read it, here is the quote from Jobs himself - Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. The entire speech is worth listening to, and I have linked the YouTube video in there Show Notes. Finally, this month saw the passing of David Bowie. In 1973, as a 17 year, I lived and worked in London for 18 months which was an amazing contrast from life as a high school student in Melbourne. One of the vivid memories of that time was seeing colour TV of the first time, and Bowie in full Ziggy Stardust personae on "Top of the Pops". Bowie's career offers some worthwhile guidance for our efforts to build and maintain resilience - it requires constant review and re-invention to stay relevant. He didn't simply publish a single style or "body of knowledge" and think it would remain relevant forever - he constantly reviewed and changed his approach. Not surprising that this is perhaps my favourite Bowie track - until next week, take care on your journey. And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're going through Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes (Turn and face the strange) Ch-ch-changes Don't tell them to grow up and out of it Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes (Turn and face the strange) Ch-ch-changes Where's your shame You've left us up to our necks in it Time may change me But you can't trace time
As a Founder, you’ve got your hand in everything imaginable, from legal paperwork to hiring to product management to support and everything in between. You’re pulled in every direction from everyone who’s got your contact info and you feel obligated to chase every rabbit you think of. But one of the hardest lessons to learn is that “busy” does not equal “productive.” All of those random things you’ve got your hand in, all of those rabbits you chase in the name of “traction” aren’t necessarily the most important things to be working on right then. And that can be a critical mistake. The catch here is that figuring out what those “most important” things are can feel like trying to spot a unicorn breakdancing over a double rainbow. What you’ve probably tried before The typical line of thought here is that the solution is to somehow rate things (mentally or otherwise) based on what is most impactful and go from there. But the fact is, that’s just not practical and has a lot of mental overhead. Certain things may not have direct high impact but are still necessary and can’t be pushed off to more convenient times (yay taxes!). The other extreme here is to just have a simple to-do list with no priority at all, but that’s too basic and leaves you feeling overwhelmed. What you need is something that’s quick to add to and doesn’t overwhelm you with all the things that need to get done. Showing you everything under the sun helps no one. Showing you what’s available and important given your current context? Golden. To pull that off, I use OmniFocus. But how do I use it without it being overwhelming? I’m glad you asked. The system for getting things done OmniFocus is one of those tools that, on the surface, seems absurdly complex. But let’s go ahead and be clear here…I use all of maybe 10% of its features. So, hang with me. My little system here really isn’t that complicated. Despite all the nooks and crannies in OmniFocus, there are only two sections you need to know about: Contexts and Projects. We’ll take a look at those two things then jump in to how the pieces fit together on a practical level. Contexts In OmniFocus, there’s the concept of “Contexts”. These can be anything: a place, situation, mindset…whatever. These are my Contexts: Waiting — Tasks that are waiting on someone else or some event before I can proceed. Home — For when I’m at home doing non-work tasks. Office — For work-specific tasks. Errands — When I’m out running errands. Someday — Things I’d like to get done one day. Mainly a catch-all so I don’t forget about random ideas. GTD — For Daily Review tasks (which I’ll talk about shortly) You can go really fine-grained with the Contexts, but I prefer to keep them higher level. Contexts are the way to answer the question, “What should I be doing right now, given my current location/situation/mindset?” Projects Projects in OmniFocus are simply collections of tasks, but there’s one little thing that makes them really powerful: the project type. You can create Parallel or Sequential projects. Parallel projects are the equivalent of a big bucket of tasks where you can pick and choose the items to do at random. Sequential projects are only done in order. Meaning there’s only one to-do available for you for that project at a given time and you can’t do the others until you’ve done the task before it. And this is glorious. We’ll cover why momentarily. You don’t have to put everything in a Project, but if any higher level task requires more than one or two steps, I typically create a project for it. Tasks, to-do’s, items, actions…whatever you want to call them What to-do app would be complete without things to do?!?! Adding an item to OmniFocus is really easy, but there are a few things you should set as it will keep things much more organized. Action — The action you need to take Project — What project it’s associated with Context — What context it should show in (see note below) Defer date — When to hide the task until (see note below) Due date — When you absolutely need to have this done by Notes — Any notes, links, attachments you need to get it done. With OmniFocus, every new item should have a Context. Otherwise you just end up with a really expensive generic to-do app. Adding a Context has the benefit of you not seeing that office-specific task when you’re out running errands, for instance. Now, what if you’ve got a task that you know you don’t even need to think about again until next month? That’s what the “Deferred date” is for. When you set that, OmniFocus won’t even show you the item until that date, keeping your to-do list nice and tidy! The hidden power of sequential projects & deferred dates The key to staying sane when building a startup is getting everything out of your head. You will forget things. Every single day. Then you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to remember the thing that you forgot. Stop that. Put it in OmniFocus the second you think of it, and then never think about it again until it’s time to do it. Sequential projects are a beautiful thing because they only show you the task that you can actually work on right now. They’re showing you the next bite of the elephant…not the entire elephant. Deferred dates have a similar effect in that they hide the item until it’s actually relevant. Pulling it all together in the Daily Review I’ve been talking about lots of disparate bits and pieces of OmniFocus and the process I use. Let’s bring it all together in to how this functions on a daily basis. Each morning, before I do anything else, I do a Daily Review. I have a Daily Review project set up that includes six items that I need to get done before anything else. I typically do them in order, but it’s not necessary (it’s set up as as Parallel project, FYI). I have a “GTD” context that I use just for this project. Review Calendar — This is to remind me of any meetings or phone calls I have. Process Trello Inbox — We use Trello religiously and many times there are things that need reviewing before they can keep moving forward. Doing this first thing in the morning means my team can keep moving forward as well. Process Intercom Inbox — We use Intercom for both support and automated emails and usually there are a few tickets/emails that need a response from me. Process Email Inbox — I try to keep my email inbox empty and the key to that is not using it as a to-do list. OmniFocus has the Clip-o-Tron tool for Mail on OS X that makes it dead simple to create items out of your emails. Check all projects have a Next Action — You should always know what needs to be done next on a project, otherwise you need to “pause” the project until you’re ready to pick back up on it. Without a next action it will sit there for all eternity and you’ll feel bad about yourself. Flag priority actions for today — The last thing I do is go through and “flag” items that I plan on getting done today. Anything that’s flagged gets done and if I finish all of the flagged items, then I can move on to other items. The set up here is that the “Daily Review” project is set to repeat every week day. Then you tick the “Complete when completing last action” checkbox for the project and it will hide the items until tomorrow! Magic! The Daily Review is crucial because it’s the time where you plan out your day. It’s your time to be proactive instead of reactive. You decide what needs to get done based on your context and when something is due, and you get it done. Simple as that.
