Abbasid History Podcast

Living under the Samanid dyansty in modern-day Tajikistan, Rudaki is considered the first of the great classical Islamic Persian poets and the father of Tajik literature. Despite being a celebrated, patronised court poet, he would fall into poverty near the end of his life dying blind and alone. To discuss with us today the life, works and legacy of Rudaki is Ali Hammoud. Ali Hammoud is a PhD candidate at Western Sydney University. He is broadly interested in Shīʿīsm and Islamicate intellectual history. Q1. Rudaki was born around 858CE and died around 941CE at around 83 years old. He lived under the Samanid dynasty who at their height ruled much  of modern day central Asia under the auspices of the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad. Tell us about the cultural context in which he was born. Q2. We know little about his life. We know we he was patronised by the Samaind vizier Abū al-Faḍl al-Balʿamī. What else can we say with certainty about his life?    Q3. Rudaki was as much a musician and singer as he was a poet. How is his work characterised. Q4. If people want to learn more about Persian literature in general, where would you recommend they start? What translations would you recommend of Rudaki? Q5 Finally before we end, give us a sample of Rudaki's work.  Ali Hammoud: https://x.com/AliHammoud7777 https://alihammoud7.substack.com/

Here are 3 big things you need to know— One — Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is President-elect Trump's new pick for U.S. Attorney General.  Trump selected Bondi on Thursday after Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination earlier in the day.  Trump posted on Truth Social that Bondi will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime, and Making America Safe Again. Two ---- Pete Hegseth took to Capitol Hill yesterday as he plays defense regarding sexual assault allegations.  A California woman says President-elect Trump's defense secretary pick sexually assaulted her years ago.  Hegseth confirmed he paid his accuser an undisclosed amount of money for a non-disclosure agreement.   And number three — A coin toss and a drawing has decided a tied race for the Mount Clemens Community Schools board.  Rashidah Hammoud and Alex Bronson each had three-thousand-496 votes in the November 5 election and Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini held the coin toss Wednesday.  Hammoud won the toss and selected from a bin that had two slips of paper, one saying "elected" and the other "not elected."  She picked the sheet that said "elected" and got the win.

Dr. Helen Morgan is the Director of Residency Preparation Courses at the University of Michigan. Together, Drs. Hammoud and Morgan are leading the $1.7 million American Medical Association (AMA) Reimagining Residency Grant for Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Right Resident, Right Program, Ready Day One. The episode begins with Drs. Hammoud and Morgan sharing a call to action regarding the need to transition the emphasis of applying to residency from the lens of individual achievements to that of an individual's competency as a future physician. The two physicians share what inspired them to contribute to making changes in the realm of OB/GYN, including personal experiences from advising medical students at the University of Michigan to their own family members. During this time, they address pitfalls of the current system, including the financial expenses for applications. The group then transitions to describe the 5-year grant that led to the development of Right Resident, Right Program, Ready Day One. The program addresses 2 components: (1) the application process itself, and (2) students' readiness for residency. The physicians cover the topic of “application fever” (i.e., the large increase in the number of applications that each student submits), and how the field of OB/GYN has adopted “program signaling” with the hope to mitigate this ongoing trend. Drs. Hammoud and Morgan also address topics such as growth mindset, holistic review of applications, importance of coaching for preparation for residency, and the increasing popularity of OB/GYN as a specialty. Lastly, the group highlights other aspects of the residency application process, including methods to ensure an equitable review process, the need to increase diversity in the field, the standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE), and best practices to facilitate transition to residency. During this conversation, Drs. Hammoud and Morgan share about the residency preparation courses that are available for medical students at the University of Michigan.

Emotional intelligence in the workplace has only recently become recognized as a vital skill. In the traditional business model, skills related to the specific job and the ability to problem solve have been the key areas of focus during the interview process. Yet, in the words of our guest here today “IQ will land you the job but you'll keep it because of your EQ”. I can tell you first-hand how spot-on this statement is. When I originally formed my consulting agency and started hiring, I was really only concerned with the technical skills of candidates I was interviewing. Yet, over time I saw that my best employees were not the ones with the greatest skillset on the platform we work with…the team members who were achieving the best results and providing the greatest value to the company were those with highly developed emotional intelligence skills. Here to speak with us today about the value of emotional intelligence in leadership and otherwise is Mohamed Hammoud.

Say you're selling widgets. You know your widget is 39% lighter than the competition, works 53% faster, costs 13% less, and has 29% more support. Your client is asleep by now. But maybe, three years ago you had a friend who struggled with their widget, who complained about the cost, the size, and how frustrated they were because a widget part broke, and they couldn't get any support to fix it. So you decided to do something about that. And you designed this better, cheaper widget, and have around-the-clock o-call support, and your friend's company has now doubled their production capacity. This is the difference between fact-telling and storytelling, and it's even more effective when told via video. Ali Hammoud and his team at Vidyard have cracked the code on effective video selling and video marketing. Now we examine video selling and video marketing through a storytelling lens. Key Points: "Video storytelling becomes effective when you treat your prospects as if they were archetypal characters in a story." You have to figure out their: * character traits * wants * needs Then you can weave in your narrative.

In 1976, Mohamed Hammoud fled Lebanon with his family to escape a civil war. Arriving in Canada, he was told to change his name to “Mike” in order to fit in. Over the years, as he moved and explored, he changed his name again and again—Mikeal in Quebec, Miguel in Spain, and finally back to himself, Mohamed. He and I had a terrific journey of ideas and insights over 30 minutes, and now I have a wonderful friend in London, Ontario, where I actually stopped for a snack in m1973!

How can you communicate clearly and effectively while at the same time make your job easier? Utilize video with a tool like Vidyard, which gives you information on who's watching your stuff, how long, how many times, and who they're sharing it with so you know whether or not they're interested in what you're selling. On this episode of the ROI Online Podcast, Steve Brown talks with Ali Hammoud about the capabilities of Vidyard and how you can use it to stand out among the noise. Ali is a partner manager at Vidyard, a scalable, complex communication solution that stores video assets for both sales and marketing and provides extensive statistics. Video allows you to reach decision-makers inboxes and grab their attention, while Vidyard tells you in real-time when someone has watched the video you sent. Ali says there are four main categories to making a good, scrappy, authentic video with high impact:Good lighting so you can be seenA decent camera angleA background that isn't distracting and works to your advantageA suitable mic A sale closes when the money is in the bank and videos help you reach all the decision-makers within a business so they can approve a deal with less hassle. And, according to Vidyard, people retain 72% of the information they see in video, and 90% of buyers engage with video before making a purchase. That means videos become a more effective way of communicating your message and even allow you to easily personalize it. Worried about how difficult it will be to incorporate video into your existing process? Vidyard's got you covered there, too. There's a free tool on the website and an extension for Chrome. The key, according to Ali, is to figure out how video fits into your business strategy from prospecting to post-sale, that way you're using it well and not creating more work for yourself.
