Some say the Bible forbids interracial marriage. Here's WHY they say it and WHY they are wrong. I'm still in the middle of making a series of videos on marriage, divorce and remarriage and since this particular question didn't really fit well into one of those videos I thought I'd make a stand alone video on it. I actually did some research to find out what passages of scripture people used to try to support a ban on interracial marriage (also called anti-miscegenation) and I'm responding to those particular passages and talking points in this video. Here's my full and in-depth teaching on divorce and remarriage in the Bible. https://youtu.be/N2pC6ZikbYo This is my teaching on a biblical understanding of wive's submitting to their husbands https://youtu.be/H8PFVZgIQ2w This is my teaching on how to be a husband according to the Bible. https://youtu.be/65eMggo_xKQ Subscribe to get new videos every week and learn to think biblically about everything. Maybe it goes without saying, but all of us dream, multiple times a night. Some of us are more attuned to our dreams than others, with myself being one who historically has not been attuned to my dreams. Anecdotally I (Matt Whitney) have heard about people having more recollection of their dreams, and much more vivid dreams, during this time of pandemic. And my anecdotal recalling is backed up by recent news articles on the increased reporting of vivid dreams and their unusual content from people during this time of CoronaVirus. I have included links to a few of these articles below. So it’s with a good deal of relevance and personal curiosity that I spoke with Amy Curran, a certified dreamwork facilitator. You can learn about her work at her website www.innerdreamwork.com Have you been dreaming more vividly and extensively during this time, and would like to explore a deeper, more purposeful meaning to your dreams? Or are you a spiritual companion looking for some ways to explore dreams with the people you work with or meet with? This episode has a lot of practical advice and tools for you to begin to work with. And in the next episode, I go through the dreamwork process with Amy, so stay tuned for a session of "Fishbowl Spiritual Companionship" - looking into the real-life process of spiritual companionship! --- Amy Curran is a certified dreamwork facilitator, who received her two-year certification from the Haden Institute in 2019. She also has a BA in Marketing from Western Washington University. A lifelong resident of Bainbridge Island, WA. Amy’s interest in the inner realm of the dream has lead her to seek out groups to help process her own dreams. She has also worked with psychotherapists in the Jungian tradition, both of which have provided her with rich insights. Amy’s desire as a dream worker is to guide those with curiosity and interest in their dreams, through explorations of what the unconscious brings forth. She offers a safe container for deepening relationships to dreams, in her home studio on Bainbridge Island. In the past couple of years of being an entrepreneur, I’ve become increasingly aware that my struggle with mental health is not an isolated incident that only I suffer from. As I dig deeper into understanding my own issues, I have found that challenges with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and suicidal ideation affects 73% of entrepreneurs. My guest today, Dennis Gillan, is an expert in the field of mental health with heartbreaking experiences in dealing with the stark realities of suicide. While Dennis is NOT a psychologist or psychiatrist, he is a world-class speaker who has spoken to the Army, Air Force, churches, homeless shelters and colleges across the country. I wanted to bring him on today — not for a Debbie-downer episode — but for an inspirational call-to-action for all of us, the business owners, founders and the families that support us, so that we can take one more step to END the stigma of mental health in this country. In this episode, you’ll hear Dennis share how he dealt with the suicides of his two brothers, and how we can support those around us, and reclaim our own lives if we, too, suffer in silence. Dennis says that dealing with the word “suicide” brings on a tremendous amount of guilt and pride. Guilt for what you could have done to prevent it, and pride of not wanting to ask for help. Dennis shares how he found redemptive healing in helping others as a volunteer for a suicide prevention hotline, and getting trained in QPR, or question, persuade, refer. “QPR is like CPR for mental health,” says Dennis. “I’m not a cardiologist, but I can keep someone alive until the pros get there.” Dennis also speaks to why entrepreneurs and creative-types are susceptible to mental health issues and how “Bundling Up” can help you cope. If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text the Crisis Text Line, a free text message service available 24/7, at 741-741. The League of Badass Women had the honor of speaking with brilliant badass Power Talks hosts from Washington DC (Sandhya Rao and Jeannine Harvey) and Los Angeles (Catherine Connors). We look at intergenerational dialogue- how we talk to young girls, how women treat each other in the workplace, and who decides what our cultural norms are, anyway? And how that all relates to internalized misogyny, or “the nasty voice," as it was called in the previous episode. Bill Fletcher Jr is a long-time labor leader and author of multiple books, including Solidarity Divided: The Crisis In Organized Labor And A New Path Toward Social Justice (co-author Dr. Fernando Gapasin) and a new mystery thriller The Man Who Fell From The Sky. In our interview, Fletcher Jr discusses the need for "social justice unionism" in a post-Janus United States. Workers are becoming increasingly atomized in the US, and the state continues to rollback any investments into the reproductive labor that stitches society together. The moment, as Fletcher Jr states, that organized labor can seize for victory is almost over. We might not get another moment. What role do teachers strikes, worker-owned businesses, and housing cooperatives play in seizing this current moment? How do the rank and file push labor leadership to understand that we cannot continue doing "business as usual" despite not being knocked out by Janus right away? We discuss all of these topics and more in this episode of Laborwave. We're back with a special guest for episode 95, in which we're talking about the animation industry, capitalism, and the critiques we're seeing in children's media. Thank you so much to our guest for bringing personal insight and professional knowledge to our discussion! You might notice some choppiness throughout this episode. To protect our guest's identity, we decided it was in everyone's best interest to edit her name out. Though it might sound a little unusual, it's not a problem with your speakers or connection, just the natural result of taking a second or so out of a sentence. In 2012, Congress created a new government agency called FirstNet and tasked it with building a high-speed wireless network that would allow all first responders in the United States to communicate with each other daily and in times of emergencies. In July, FirstNet awarded AT&T with a 25 year contract to do the actual work. In this episode, hear highlights from a recent hearing about this new network as we examine the wisdom of contracting such an important part of our public safety infrastructure to the private sector. Roger Wicker (MS): In 2012 Congress created the First Responder Network Authority to lead the development of a nationwide interoperable public-safety broadband network in the United States. Following the communication’s failures that plagued recovery efforts during 9/11 and other national emergencies, including Hurricane Katrina, there was and still is a clear need for a reliable communications network to support the essential work of our public-safety officials. Such a network would improve coordination among first responders across multiple jurisdictions and enhance the ability of first responders to provide lifesaving emergency services quickly. 6:37 Sen. Brian Schatz (HI): With FirstNet, firefighters will be able to download the blueprint of a burning building before they enter; a police officer arriving at a scene can run a background check or get pictures of a suspect by accessing a federal law enforcement database; most importantly, emergency personnel will not be competing with commercial users for bandwidth. They will have priority on this network, which will be built and hardened to public-safety specifications. It will have rugged eyes and competitive devices and specify public-safety applications. 9:40 Curtis Brown: Last week the governor was proud to announce that Virginia was the first state in the nation to opt in to FirstNet. Virginia opted in to provide current AT&T public-safety subscribers with the benefit of priority services now at no cost to the Commonwealth, as well as the green light to build out of Virginia’s portion of the national public-safety broadband network. We believe that decision to opt in will promote competition within the public-safety communications marketplace, that will reduce costs and drive innovation across all carriers. Opting out was _____(00:31-verily) considered, but the unknown cost and risk associated with deploying and operating a network was not feasible. 19:45 Mark Goldstein: In March 2017 FirstNet awarded a 25-year contract to AT&T to build, operate, and maintain the network. FirstNet’s oversight of AT&T’s performance is very important, given the scope of the network and the duration of the contract. Among GAO’s findings in the report are the following: first, FirstNet has conducted key efforts to establish the network, namely releasing the requests for proposal for the network and awarding the network contract to AT&T. As the contractor, AT&T will be responsible for the overall design, development, production, operation, and evolution of the network. 24:35 Chris Sambar: The AT&T team that I lead is dedicated exclusively to FirstNet. I expect this group to grow to several-hundred employees by this year’s end as we hire people across the country with a broad range of skill sets to help us ramp up our network build out. Overall, AT&T expects to spend $40 billion over the lifetime of this contract and to build an operating unique, nationwide, interoperable, IP-based, high-speed mobile network, encrypted at its core, that will provide first responders priority, primary users with preemption and all other users during times of emergency and network congestion. The First Responder Network will be connected to and leverage off AT&T’s world-class telecommunications platform, valued at nearly $180 billion, including a wireless network that reaches 99.6% of the U.S. population. In addition, AT&T will support first responders 24 by 7 by 365 with a dedicated security-operation center and help desk. We will provide first responders with a highly secure application ecosystem as well as a highly competitive flexible pricing on equipment and services that they select for their unique needs. One of the most important resources that AT&T brings to bear on the new First Responder Network is our best-in-class national disaster-recovery team. We have spent more than a 130,000 working hours on field exercises and disaster-recovery deployments over the last two decades. This team combines network infrastructure, support trailers, recovery engineering-software applications, and boots on the ground filled by full-time and volunteer AT&T disaster-response team members. In order to support the First Responder Network, AT&T will increase its disaster-recovery fleet by adding 72 new custom-designed vehicles, just for the FirstNet mission. 26:55 Chris Sambar: Possibilities include near real-time information on traffic conditions, which can help determine the best route to an emergency for a first responder; wearable sensors and cameras for police and firefighters to help give them better situational awareness and camera-equipped drones and robots that will be able to deliver real-time imagery. Our FirstNet efforts are expected to create 10,000 U.S. jobs over the next two years as well as significant public-private infrastructure investment. 30:25 Michael Poth: We’ve created and delivered state plans on June 19 to 50 states, two territories, and the District of Columbia three months ahead of schedule, and as mentioned, the five governors from five great states have already opted in. None of this could be possible, though, without the public-private framework that Congress established for the FirstNet network, by leveraging private-sector resources, infrastructure, cost savings, public-private partner synergies to deploy, operate, and maintain the system. FirstNet can be now deployed quickly, efficiently, and cost effectively. 36:10 Sen. Roger Wicker (MS): Dr. Darsey mentioned that the Mississsippi wireless communications commission has expressed concerns about FirstNet’s commitment to hardening the network. You mentioned this in your testimony, the need for FirstNet infrastructure to be hardened. Can you discuss why that’s important, and is it more important in the rural areas, and also, in your experience, how do broadband needs differ between urban and rural communities with respect to providing emergency medical services? Dr. Damon Darsey: Sure. Thanks for the question. I’ll give you an example. Couple years ago we had a tornado, as you well remember, that took out a hospital in the northeast part of our state. And the medical center has got a pretty robust program to respond to that, and we did. The challenge in that was it took out a couple of commercial towers, but it did not, after a fairly close hit, take out one of our hardened public-safety communication towers. What that did for us is we lost all ability to communicate data out of that area, which was vital in moving and evacuating the hospital, nursing home, and recovering the people that were there. That’s the piece that is the concern that I think we share, all of us here, of how do we make that as hardened as possible. In terms of rural and urban, from a medical perspective we can do a lot more, as our team is showing in Mississippi and other states, if we know about the patient well before they get close to a hospital. If we can reach out and touch the stroke patient in the middle of the Mississippi Delta, we can dramatically increase their chances of survival and meaningful use after arrival to the hospital. Currently, we’re doing that over radio, and it’s working really well, but now imagine that in the rural areas. In urban areas, it’s vital in the medical world, but here we’re five minutes from multiple hospitals. Now take that as a 45 or 50 minutes away, and what we can do with broadband data in that time is truly life saving and saving of healthcare dollars. There’s a nexus here that FirstNet can combine both of those. 41:00 Michael Poth: Numerous bids were in, and they were analyzed with a great level of detail, and through that process that the Department of Interior assisted us with as the acquisition experts, AT&T came out as the prevailing solution and prevailing company provider. Sen. Bill Nelson (FL): The question is why. Poth: Well, the value that they’re bringing with their existing infrastructure, their ability and size, their financial sustainability to be able to take on something of this nature, and their lowest-risk approach to implementing this in the shortest time was truly some of the value propositions that made them more competitive than some of the other bids that were analyzed. 42:13 Chris Sambar: The initial RFP that FirstNet released contemplated building out a public-safety broadband network using just band class 14, and we responded accordingly. But through discussions, we decided we would extend it beyond just the band class 14, which is the spectrum that was allocated for first responders in 2012. We said we would open up all of the spectrum bands within AT&T. So, essentially, what that means is the day that a state opts in, they have immediate access to AT&T’s entire network, all spectrum bands, and they will see the benefits of FirstNet on all spectrum bands, all wireless towers, from AT&T that are LTE enabled. So I think that’s a tremendous benefit that FirstNet was not expecting when they contemplated the original RFP. But when we brought that, I think they were very pleased with that, and that helped us. Sen. Bill Nelson (FL): So, you’re going to have a level playing field for all device manufacturers. Sambar: Absolutely, sir. 43:15 Sen. Bill Nelson (FL): There must have been some folks in Virginia that suggested that you opt out of the network and chart your own path. Tell me the benefits to Virginia’s first responders of the governor’s decision to opt in. Curtis Brown: Thank you, Senator. The decision to opt in was really based on looking at the benefits that comes with opt in, the immediate priority and preemption services that would come for those who are subscribers to the network. And a major thing, Senator, is to the fact that it comes at no cost to the Commonwealth. We have been disproportionately impacted by sequestration and other aspects—the governor had to close a 300-million-dollar budget deficit—and so looking at the cost it would take to build a network and sustain it, it just was not feasible. 47:45 Chris Sambar: We initially envisioned, when we launched the State Plan portal on June 19, that we would have roughly 50 user IDs and passwords per state. That would be 50 individuals who would access the portal. We immediately got feedback that states wanted more, and we are offering more. So, we have a state right now, as a matter of fact, 227 login and user IDs have been issued. So, it shouldn’t be an issue for a state if they have additional people. The only requirements we have, Senator, is that, as Mr. Poth said, that it’s an official email address, somebody in the state who works for the state— Unknown Senator: Right. Sambar: —or an authorized consultant. Either of those is fine. We just don’t want, like, a @gmail, @hotmail, someone that we don’t know who they are. Unknown Senator: Right, okay. 53:14 Michael Poth: How do the states hold us accountable? As FirstNet shifts gears from developing a proposal and making an award, for the next 25 years we are going to be in a position to work with the states, continuous and public safety in all of those states, to make sure that all of their expectations, both from the State Plans and in the future, are being met and translated. If appropriate, we back into contractual actionable items. Or if AT&T, for example, is not meeting the requirements or the expectations, FirstNet will, on behalf of public safety and those states, enforce the terms of the contract. 54:55 Michael Poth: Canada is using the same exact spectrum that we’ll be utilizing with AT&T, so there’s a lot of synergies. We’ve spent a great deal of time coordinating and comparing notes with Canada and the public-safety entities in that country as to what we’re doing so that there is the inoperability between the countries will also be realized. 1:08:50 Chris Sambar: So we have had a number of states as well as federal agencies we’ve been in communication with, and some of the states have been very direct that they’re interested us putting our LTE equipment on state-, city-, municipal-owned assets. That would give them the benefit of revenue from AT&T through a lease agreement. It would also give us a benefit of being able to build out the network faster. 1:24:20 Michael Poth: AT&T’s already been doing this, as mentioned, for years with their fleet of 700 deployables. Now with the 72 dedicated, which are much smaller units which is going to give us the ability to maybe get those into areas that are a little tougher to get to, we’re very excited about that. That is an absolute addition to the solution that we’re going to be able to bring to public safety quickly. 1:25:50 Chris Sambar: So, we will be building out band class 14 over the coming five years across a significant portion of our network. In the meantime, before band class 14 is built out, we will be using our commercial network. There are requirements in the contract with FirstNet over how quickly we need to build out band class 14, and we have to hit those milestones in order to receive the payments due to us from FirstNet. If we don’t hit those milestones, we don’t receive the payments, so we will be aggressively building out band class 14 for first responders. Again, in the meantime, they will have access to all of AT&T’s bands. So to say it simply, if you are a first responder, Senator, you will not know whether you’re on band class 14 or any other AT&T band, but you will have the exact same experience regardless of what band you are on on AT&T network. Sen. Roger Wicker (MS): Your position isn’t the service that’s provided, and the consumer and the public-safety user, to them it will be immaterial where it’s coming from. Sambar: The way I like to say— Exactly. The way I say it is this: public safety has been told for many years that the magic of FirstNet happens on band class 14, and we’ve changed that. That’s not correct anymore. The magic happens on the AT&T network period, and it doesn’t matter where you are, you’re going to have the exact same experience. So we’ve extended it far beyond the band class 14 to our entire network. Wicker: Will you build out the class 14 spectrum only where it is economically viable, or will you build it out where there is written requirement in the arrangement between you and FirstNet? Sambar: We are building band class 14 where we need the capacity in our network. So in order to provide priority and preemptive services to first responders and have enough capacity for everyone that’s on the network, including the first responders, there are places where we will need additional capacity; that’s where we’re building— Wicker: And you will determine that need. Sambar: AT&T, based on capacity triggers—obviously, we’ve been doing this for a long time—based on capacity triggers that we see in the network, we build out band class 14 as additional capacity on individual—and this is done on a tower-by-tower basis. 1:28:00 Sen. Roger Wicker (MS): Are you able to say what approximate percentage of the lower 48 landmass will be covered by band class 14 build out? Chris Sambar: Unfortunately, I am not, Senator. That’s proprietary between FirstNet and AT&T. I would say, again, it’s a significant portion, though. Wicker: Can you be more specific than “significant”? Sambar: That would be proprietary, Senator. I apologize. Wicker: And what makes it proprietary? Sambar: The specific details of the contract between FirstNet and AT&T. There’s a number of specific details that are proprietary, Senator. Wicker: That is proprietary and not available to the public— Sambar: That’s correct, Senator. Wicker: —or to the Congress. Sambar: That’s correct, Senator. 1:29:35 Sen. Roger Wicker: Then in terms of this coverage, which you said really shouldn’t matter what band it’s coming over— Chris Sambar: Mm-hmm. Wicker: —are you able to say what percentage of the lower 48 landmass will be covered in one way or the other? Sambar: One way or the other? Wicker: Yes. Apart, of course, from the deployables. Sambar: So, 99.6% of the U.S. population will be covered by AT&T’s network. 1:39:05 Chris Sambar: The vast major—as we understand it, based on our research and FirstNet’s research—the vast majority of firefighters, for example, are not issued devices for their daily use at work, especially volunteer firefighters. Greater than 70% of police officers are in the same situation: they are not provided a device. They’re using their personal devices. We are going to make available the FirstNet network to all of those first responders, regardless of whether you’re a volunteer, whether your agency provides you a device, or whether you bring your own personal device. They will have access to the FirstNet network. Once we can verify their credentials and ensure that we have the right people on the network, they will have access to all of those features and benefits, and it will come at a significantly lower price than they’re paying today for their personal or commercial service. So it’s a tremendous benefit to all first responders. 1:39:55 Sen. Roger Wicker (MS): On user fees, will they cost the same for all network users, or will they vary by regions, public-safety agencies, or states? Chris Sambar: It’s difficult to answer because there are different use cases, so it depends. If you’re a large department and you want unlimited data and you have a number of applications that you want preinstalled on the device and you have mobile-device management software, that would be one use case. There may be a rural department that wants to connect body cameras and dashboard video camera from a police department. It will depend on the use case. Wicker: So it’s use case and not regions and states. Sambar: That’s correct, sir. Wicker: That would be the variable. Sambar: That’s correct. Hearing: Public Safety Communications; House Committee Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, September 29, 2005. Witnesses: David Boyd: Homeland Security Dept SAFECOM Program Director Timothy Roemer: Member of the 9/11 Commission, Director of the Center for National Policy Art Botterell: Emergency Information Consultant Timestamps & Transcripts 30:44 David Boyd: Interoperability’s not a new issue. It was a problem in Washington, D.C. when the Air Florida flight crashed into the Potomac in 1982, in New York City when the Twin Towers were first attacked in 1993, in 1995 when the Murrah Building was destroyed in Oklahoma City, and in 1999 at Columbine. Too many public-safety personnel cannot communicate by radio, because their equipment is still incompatible, or the frequencies they are assigned to are different and they haven’t got bridging technologies available. They operate on 10 different frequency bands, and they run communication systems that are often proprietary and too often 30 or more years old. Over 90% of the nation’s public-safety wireless infrastructure is financed, owned, operated, and maintained by the more than 60,000 individual local jurisdictions—police, fire, and emergency services—that serve the public. 1:43:00 Timothy Roemer: Let me give you a couple examples of what the 9/11 Commission found as to some of these problems. We found all kinds of compelling instances of bravery and courage, people going into burning buildings and rescuing people. They might have rescued more. We might have saved more of the fire department chiefs, officers, police officers, emergency personnel, if they would have had public-radio spectrum to better communicate. At 9:59 in the morning on 9/11 four years ago, a general evacuation order was given to firefighters in the North Tower. The South Tower had collapsed. A place that held up to 25,000 people had been diminished to cement, steel, and ash. The people, then, in the North Tower, many of the chiefs in the lobby, didn’t even know that the other tower had collapsed, or else they might have been able to get more people out more quickly. We had comments from people saying such things as, we didn’t know it had collapsed. Somebody actually said, Mr. Chairman, that people watching TV had more information than we did in the lobby on 9/11 in the North Tower. People on TV in Florida or California knew more than our first responders on site in New York City. 1:45:10 Timothy Roemer: Mr. Chairman, then we had a disaster happen in the southern part of our country in New Orleans where we had other communication problems. In New Orleans, there’re three neighboring parishes were using different equipment on different frequencies. They couldn’t communicate. We had National Guard in Mississippi communicating by human courier, not by radio frequencies; and we had helicopters up in the air looking at our own citizens on the roofs of their homes in New Orleans, screaming and yelling for help, but they couldn’t talk in the helicopters with the boats in the water to try to find out who was rescued, who wasn’t, and who needed help. 1:55:45 Art Botterell: Third, we can no longer afford to rely on vendor-driven design of our emergency-communications infrastructure. Businesses are responsible for maximizing shareholder value, not for protecting the public welfare. We need independent sources of information and planning for our future emergency infrastructure lest we continue to get updated versions of the same old thing. The B&E Podcast #097 "Clearing Out the Basement of Our Fears & Childhood Dreams" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: On another spitball session, we talk about balancing our logic and emotion to achieve optimal creative states as well as taking responsibility and taking a look at the things that we have let stop us from going for our dreams. You know, the "uussh". POINT #1: "LOGIC & EMOTION" -When it comes to the creative process, utilizing our logic AND emotion where they function best helps us to achieve the best result. When they're working together and in harmony... oh yes! POINT #2: "TURN ON THE LIGHT" -We like to bury all kinds of stuff deep down, forgetting about it, not realizing that there's all this clutter piled up and weighing us down. Time to turn the light on it. It's not gonna be pretty, and it might get worse before it gets better, but it's the only way to begin clearing out what doesn't serve you. POINT #3: "THE TIME IS NOW" -Now that you're clearing this out, taking responsibility for all this "stuff", it is time to decide to make steps towards your dreams. Real steps. No reason to beat yourself up for "lost time" -- choose to be a warrior for your dreams. The B&E Podcast #074 "There Are No Perfect Conditions, Only Fears to be Faced" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: In the long list of reasons and excuses we give ourselves to avoid creating, a big one is about not having the circumstances or conditions to flourish. Usually, these are superficial rationalizations covering our deeper insecurities and fears around our work. When we can get a broader sense of our ideas around perfectionism, we can strive for excellence while owning our fallibility. POINT #1: "CIRCUMSTANCES ARE SHALLOW" -When we start telling ourselves a story around not having the tools or perfect situation to do our best work, we sell ourselves short and limit our creative ability. Not only that but usually they're thin veils for deeper fears and anxieties. POINT #2: "CONDITIONS ON CREATIONS ARE PARALYSING" -We often put a lot on our ideas and projects, as in we feel a kind of obligation for everything we do to be a massive success. Such an expectation restricts our potential as artists. Not everything can, needs, or has to be anything more than your best effort and expression. POINT #3: "THE EGO HIDES BEHIND PERFECTION" -Perfectionism is the refusal to move forward. When we get caught in the trappings of perfectionism, we make very little movement all in the name of staying comfortable and avoiding criticism. The B&E Podcast #051 "Trust Process Over Progress & Here's Why" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: As artists, we so often lose sight of the progress we have made. When we focus on our process and that we are ALWAYS in process, we become aware of what our next steps are to take and that even in the moments where it feels like nothing is happening, we are being given exactly what we need. POINT #1: "PROCESS MEANS COMING UP AGAINST OURSELVES" -Especially when we're in the middle of our work, our shadows and demons seem to always come out of the woodwork. Ignoring them or escaping them is not the answer. When you don't identify with them and are able to simply observe, we can release old perceptions that no longer serve us and take away their power. POINT #2: "WHEN IN DOUBT, FOLLOW YOUR VALUE/FOLLOW YOUR JOY" -On our way to completing our works, knowing what to do next can become shrouded and hard to see. In those moments we are good to check in with ourselves and ask "what's the most joyful thing for me to do right now?". It will lead you to what comes next and next and next..... POINT #3: "YOU ARE ALWAYS IN PROCESS -- LEARN TO TRUST IT" -There is never a time when we are no longer in process. We are always learning and everything we come up against can become an opportunity for growth. Trust you are exactly where you need to be. Welcome to this edition of the Real Fast Results podcast! Today, you are going to learn something that's vital to your business, and that is the ability to actually use words to persuade people to do what you want them to do. That, in the business, is called sales copy. A very special guest is joining us today, and she is actually going to share how to go about writing sales copy that sells. The really cool thing from your standpoint is that this will be presented to you as though you were a complete newbie in order to make sure that each aspect of this is made clear. Please welcome Lisa Rothstein to the show... Even if you think that you can't write anything, you're going to be able to learn how to write sales copy to sell your information products or courses. You may have flunked high school English class, but you'll still find that you are able to do this. Benefits of Writing Your Own Sales Copy Here's a great question to start with: "What are the benefits of actually putting time/effort/energy into this?" A lot of people want to just outsource their copy to a copywriter like me. I have written copy professionally for years and years, both in the advertising industry, business and in the digital marketing space. There's a time for that, but if you don't know how to write your own copy, it sometimes means that you don't really even understand your own business. A lot of times people will come to me and ask me to write some sales copy or a sales page for them, and they won't have their target market figured out and a lot of other elements of their business figured out. They just expect someone else to figure their business out for them. It's kind of a diagnostic tool to see how well you're selling and why it's good and beneficial to people. I've also taught people to write their own sales copy to the point where they end up seeing the value of what they have to offer, way more than they did before. That's because when they have to write out all those bullet points telling people why it's great, it makes them go, "Wow! This is pretty awesome. I'm going to double the price of the product." If they hadn't of written it themselves, I don't think they would have had that experience. Obviously, the big benefit of knowing how to write better sales copy is that you will sell more of your stuff. But, there's also a lot of other ancillary benefits. For instance, the confidence you have in what you're offering is so exponential when you have crafted the message yourself. When someone asks you about it, you'll be able to talk about it because you have a grounding in what you're selling. That's why I'm so passionate about helping people learn how to do this themselves. I often tell people to write their sales pages before they even decide what to put into the product because as they're doing that they'll say, "Hey, you know what would be really cool? I should put this bonus in here because it feels like it would fit right here..." In other words, it gives them the idea to put it into the product. So, it's a symbiotic relationship. It's not a separate process, and that's why, I think, some people delegate too early. The other big reason to write your own copy is that, even though a professional might have a little better way with words, but they could also just dial up a little of what you've done yourself. So, you could give them a really good first draft of what you want to say in a clear way, they could do so much better of a job. Plus, it's still your ideas and your work, whereas if you just hand it off you advocate. I don't like that. I don't think it's a good idea for people to do in business. I thoroughly agree with that. 3 Reason Why People Feel Writing Sales Copy Is Hard Before I get to the five steps I'm going to tell you about for the actual page itself, I want to share three reasons why people think this is so hard. A lot of people are probably thinking, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I couldn't write my way out of a paper bag. I can't do this. I've sat down and tried, and I just can't." There are three reasons why this is hard, okay? It's Difficult to be Objective About Yourself - The #1 reason why it's hard is because it's difficult to be objective about yourself. I'm sure that many of the people out there could turn into their best friend or colleague and figure out ways to talk about that person's product, but when it comes to selling yourself, whether you are a coach, or a consultant, and so on, it's hard to see the forest through the trees. Also, especially if you're a woman, you don't like to brag, so there can be some resistance going on. That's one reason. Being objective is tough. There Is No Sales Copy Secret- The second reason is that there are a lot of copyrighting gurus out there, and I really don't count myself as one of them, but they'll tell you that there are all these secrets. Maybe there's this secret handshake or this secret world that you have to know about in order to write great copy, or maybe that you have to be a really amazing writer and only certain people with the talent to do this can do it. That's absolutely not true. We've already talked about that. It's really not true. While there are some people that enjoy it and are skilled at it, there's a big difference between writing this kind of copy that we do in the digital marketing space and the kind of Madmen "creative" stuff that I used to do in the advertising business. That's a whole different animal you don't need. You shouldn't be doing that kind of clever, slick stuff in our space anyway. So, all the secret stuff, what I'm going to teach you today is really going to blast that out of the water. The Challenge of the Blank Page - The third thing is the challenge of the blank page, which is true for everyone, professional writers included. That blank screen paralyses everyone. You don't know where to start or how to start. What I'm going to teach you now is going to help you with all of those things. It's going to help you with your objectivity. It's going to help you realize that there really are no secrets because if you do these five things that you're about to be taught, you're really 99% of the way there, to having really great sales copy. This will also help you with the "blank page" phenomenon because it will give you five different ways to get started. Starting is the hardest part. 5 Steps to Writing Great Sales Copy I actually learned four of these five steps on the first week on the job in the ad business. I came out of college, and I didn't know what I was doing, and all of these old men, with their pipes and their bow ties, were there, and you know, I was totally intimidated. But, my boss took me to the side and gave me this piece of advice, that I've been using ever since all these years. He said, "Lisa, there's really only four steps to writing great copy." Now, that was advertising, so I added a fifth step. You're not going to understand them right now, but you will when I go through them. The five steps are: "Oh dear!" "Good News" "Here's Why" "That's Right" "But wait...There's More!" I'm going to teach you this, but learning is remembering. The fact of the matter is, you see this every single day. It's just like any other kind of structure. Like, if someone teaches you structure and then you go to the movies and you say, "Oh my gosh! There's Act II...And there's the inciting incident." You learn the structure and then you see it everywhere. So, whenever you watch an infomercial, you'll see this. Next time you're up at 3:00 in the morning, turn on the television, and you will see this in action. You may not want to be as blatant as they are in your work, but it's what's underneath even the most elegant sales copy that you'll see. It's in the framework. Step 1 "Oh Dear!" The first expletive, "Oh dear," is where you'll state the problem. You've got a ring around the collar, and you have tried soaking and scrubbing. This works for both Madison Avenue and digital marketing. Basically, this is where you explore why the reader's life sucks right now without your solution. One of the things that I like to do with my own clients that you can do too, which it helps to do it with a partner, is to actually pretend to be your ideal client and sit with someone else and pretend that person is your therapist. So, you're their client, and you come to them with a problem, and they're like, "Okay, what seems to be the problem?" You might say something like, "Well, I'm 40 and I haven't had a date in years. I'm afraid that I'm never going to meet anybody. I'm afraid that I'm always going to be alone and my biological clock is ticking, so I'm not going to be able to have any kids. And, every time I go on a cruise, I have to go as a single person, and every time I go visit my family for Christmas or Thanksgiving, everyone asks me, 'So, when are you going to settle down,' and it's just horrible and I hate it." The more you talk about the problem, the more you'll express all of that stuff, and the more that will feed your ideas. When you go to write your copy, your ideas will flow more easily, and you'll end up saying something like, "Are you worried that you'll be single forever? Do you hate going to family functions because people are always asking about when you're going to meet someone? Do you feel like a third wheel with your friends, and when you go on vacation, do you have to be all alone? Are you concerned that it's going to be this way forever and you're just going to die alone and never have any kids?" You can put the ideas you've had during your role playing right into your sales copy, and the readers of that copy are going to be like, "Oh my God! How do they know I feel this way?" So, really try to sit down and explore all the reasons why the person would need to use your product. Think about every area of a person's life when you are thinking about how their problem affects them. How does it affect their health? How does it affect their career? How does it affect their financial situation? You know, all of these sorts of things. Just brainstorm and download all of this misery, and then you pick and choose the juiciest ones to put into your sales copy. It's about illuminating, expanding upon, and explaining how that problem is affecting the life of your prospect, and in an emotional way. Sometimes you have to be talking for a while before you actually hit the emotion. Something that has happened to me and some of my clients is that they go through this practice and actually start crying. They are so closely identifying with that person, and they're like, "Oh, it's so terrible that she's never going to meet anyone, and she'll never have kids, and she'll always wonder what life could have been like if she had been able to find a partner." That's just one example, of course. The problem is that a lot of writers, and a lot of writing teachers, will tell you to say what keeps them (your prospect) up at night. That has become so cliché and intellectually based in people's minds that people really can't reach any kind of depth that way anymore. This process helps you to get into the emotional space a little bit better. People justify with logic, but they buy on emotion. So, if you can connect with them emotionally, and you can articulate to them even better than they could even explain it themselves, what the problem is, why it is a problem, and what it feels to have it, they are going to believe that you have the solution. It's just a psychological reflex for people to subconsciously think, "I believe that you have the answer because you've been able to explain the problem so well, so clearly, and so emotionally." The most important thing to remember, when you're writing any kind of work, but especially sales copy, is that the creative process is to brainstorm everything. Don't write; just get it all out there. What options would you have. It's like smearing the paint onto the pallet, if you were a painter, and then saying, "I'm going to take a little bit of the red that I squeezed out, and a little bit of blue that I squeezed out, and dab it onto the picture." You're not going to use it all, but until it's all out there, you don't know what you have to work with. Often, people go straight into the writing, and then they wonder why it's flat and paralyzed. You aren't writing at first, you're just squeezing the paint onto the board. That's it. Step 2 "Good News" Now you've gone wait deep into the problem, and why it sucks to be them, and all the effects it's going to have on their life. "Well, guess what? You've got this problem. Well, good news! There's a solution! Introducing my brand new, handy-dandy whatever it is...That is going to solve all those problems." Now you might want to paint an opposite picture by imagining when you have this problem solved, imagining what it's going to be like when you bring the love of your life to Thanksgiving dinner and everyone loves him, and you plan your vacations together, and there are all of these memories that you get to share. I'm just making stuff up, and you don't necessarily have to go into all of this detail. You've stirred the pot in your "Oh Dear" section to the point where people really want to believe that you have the solution that they need, so they are just waiting for you to prove to them that what you have to offer works. They want to believe you. This leads into Step #3, which is "Here's why". Step 3 "Here's Why" This is where a lot of people mistakenly start. "Here's why it works. Here's how it works. Here's why I know what I'm talking about...Because I went through the same thing too, and here's my story. Here's why you can believe me...Because it worked for all these other people who are going to give you their testimonials right here. Here's another reason you can believe me...Because I'm going to give you a money-back guarantee. Here's the process. Here's all you're going to get." You might offer to give your prospects 8,000 hours of MP3s, and workbooks, and workshops, and live events, etc. A lot of people start with that. Nobody wants a workbook. Nobody wants a DVD. But, when you tell them, "You've got this horrible problem that I understand better than anyone, and I've got the solution to solve it," you'll have their attention. Then, you simply go on to tell the reader why it's going to work. You're going to have all of this proof that what you have worked for other people, and it's kind of like calling for witnesses at a trial if you're a lawyer. I like to use analogies because I think that it helps a lot. So, you know, here's the character witness, and here's the glove that doesn't fit. It's like the demonstrations, when you see the guy driving his truck over the flashlight and it doesn't break. Before and after pictures are often used in this capacity if you're selling a weight loss product, or a fitness product, or something like that. They'll show a before and after, and that's part of the proof. You hear about social proof a lot, but there's all kinds of other proof. "Here's why this is important, and here's why my process is kosher. Just look at all the statistics out there that show that you're more likely to be shot by a terrorist than to find a mate after the age of 40." You know, I didn't make that statistic up, but I call it in as part of the evidence that I am presenting in my case. You don't necessarily have to do all of these things in this exact order, but you could do worse than to do them in this order. Watch an infomercial and you'll see that. Even if you watch television commercials that are 30 seconds long. When you're doing the brainstorming section of your sales page, and you realize that you don't have a whole lot in the section, that means you really need to go out and get some more facts and evidence to bolster my case. Where can I go back to my clients to get testimonials? Where can I call in a statistic? Where can I strengthen my guarantee and show why my process works? Where can I pull in my own story to prove that I've been through this myself. A lot of people will create products where they have solved a problem for themselves, and now they are bringing their system or intellectual property out to the world. This is where you might start to talk about your story and how you were in the same place they were, and that's why you can talk about it now, saying something to the degree of, "I discover this process, and lo and behold, it worked. Then, I tried it with my clients and it worked for them. Now I'm bringing it to you." That's part of the "here's why" section. People are going to start to believe what you're saying because there is some credibility there. Step 4 "That's Right" You've told them that you understand the problem, and you may have made them feel a little horrible, but also hopeful because you may have the solution they're looking for. At this point, you've proven to them that your solution is probably going to work. So, you have now reached Step 4, which is kind of a recap. You'll essentially say, "That's right. You're going to solve this problem that's been bothering you forever, that you thought was insoluble, and you're going to have this amazing solution instead. You're going to get all of this stuff, that I talked about in the previous section and all of these reasons why it's going to work." Now you're starting to talk a little about components and more about the actual physical stuff they are going to get and how they are going to be delivered. The idea here is that your prospect will be thinking, "Well, how much is this going to cost me. It sounds so great that I'm afraid it's going to be too expensive." That's why you'll sometimes see the value of each individual item listed out for a total value of a bazillion dollars, but you only have to pay $197, or something like that. I'm exaggerating to make a point, but you've seen this on infomercials 100 times over. Usually, in regular advertising, that's where it starts. I wrote an ad a long, long time ago. It was a TV commercial that did very, very well. This was way back in the day, before there was liquid dishwashing detergent to put into your dishwasher; there was only powder. So, one of my commercials launched the first liquid that went into dishwashers. In this case, it was like, "Oh no! Your dishwasher powder didn't dissolve and your dishes aren't clean. Good news! We have this great new Palmolive automatic dishwasher detergent that's going to solve that problem. Here's why it works. It's a liquid, so it dissolves and doesn't leave powder all over your dishes. That's right. You'll never have this problem again." I mean, that's pretty much how it went, but in the visual people are throwing out their dishes and throwing them against the wall because they were so mad that their dishes weren't clean. It was the 80's, so it was a little bit cheesy, but the idea is that this is still the same structure. At this point, in the traditional advertising world, you would stop. If you're in the infomercial or digital marketing world, you're going to move on to Step 5, which is "But wait...There's More!" Step 5 "But wait...There's More!" This is where you would throw in all of the bonuses. It's where the infomercial will say, "But wait! We'll double your offer. We'll give you two of the things you didn't even know you needed one of five minutes ago. We're going to give you two of them, just pay more shipping and handling." Obviously, we are in the digital space, so if you have an info product, you'll offer bonuses. The best bonuses in this space are things that help people consume the product and/or that add value to the product. It should be something relevant. A lot of times I will tell my clients that they have given way too much value in their products and that they should take something out of there and make it a bonus. Put it on a little velvet pillow, and now it's like, "Oh, and now you'll get my amazing spreadsheet that's going to help you to keep track of your progress." Anyway, the point is that you were including that before, but by offering it separately you can make your offer seem even more valuable and irresistible. The best thing is that if it's a digital download, it doesn't cost anything to deliver, but it's super-valuable to your prospect. So, there's this other extra thing, and sometimes people will buy it just for the bonus. When I take people who can't write sales copy through what we just did I ask, "How many people thing they can write their own sales page now?" Pretty much, the whole room raises their hand, whereas in the beginning I'll ask, "How many people think it's impossible to write copy," and pretty much the same people raised their hand. Once you get into the details, you may have to scratch your head a little to find the right words, but you probably don't have a problem with writing but a problem with clarity. Now that you know what these five things are, as long as you just do: "Oh dear!" "Good News" "Here's Why" "That's Right" "But wait...There's More!" Then, you just fill in all of the blanks. You'd have the basis of a pretty good first draft after doing this. In fact, it would be better than most people's and even better than some copywriters. And, how much more will you feel connected to what you're selling once you have actually done this? The "Here's Why" section is probably where you would put your bullet points. I haven't gone into all of the features, and benefits, and stuff like that. I'm bringing out a course soon that talks about that. There's lots of people who talk about features and benefits, but I mean, all of that stuff fits into this process. It's going to make you feel much more confident about what you've got. That's why so many of my clients raise the price of their products after they do this. They may not have had that kind of confidence before, and they were just hoping that someone else would figure out why this thing was good and how to say it, you know? It's better if you do it, at least in the first draft. Testimonials When you're actually creating your page, after you've basically collected all of this material, if you have enough testimonials a great thing that you can do is dot them around and use them to break up the page visually. Also, you might put a testimonial right after a bullet point when you have a testimonial that illustrates that point. For example, if you said something in a bullet point that let people know your product will increase their income, you can follow that with a testimonial where someone says that they had an increase in sales. This essentially tells the reader, "I'm not just saying this, look what he has to say." It's a luxury to have testimonials that boaster your product's track record, but even if it doesn't have that kind or track record yet, there are still ways that you could go about borrowing credibility or get folks to say nice things that will allow your reader to connect the dots and figure out you're someone they should be listening to. I work with people on that too, because some folks are just getting started, and they are like, "But, I don't have testimonials." There are things that you can use instead. They may not be as valuable, so you should always be collecting that kind of proof, anywhere you can find it. One thing that you can do is use beta testers to try out your products. No one has to know if they paid for it or not. They got results, and that's what matters. As far as the reader is concerned, it's none of their business. So, that's awesome. Where To Place the Guarantee I like to put it near the order form, or near where you are going to be asking for the sale. Because, at this point they want to click "Add to Cart," but maybe they're scared. People always ask, "What if someone asks for their money back, and they just want to take my product and use it." You know what? That's the cost of doing business, and the number of people who are going to be made to feel safe enough to do business with you without knowing you far outweighs the two or three bad apples who are going be thieves. So, I always tell people not to worry about that. There is a way that you can go about taking a person off of your list if they refund too much. For example, if a person refunds three times, you might take them off of the list and you send them an email that says something like, "We're obviously not the company for you, so we've taken you off of our list. If you do buy something else from us, you will not ever be refunded again." That's how you can handle that, but there's no reason to advertise this. You may have to deal with this once or twice a year, if that. It's a really tiny percentage of people that you might have to do this with. I would put it in more than once. I'd put it any place where I thought people would need to be reassured. The guarantee is there to make people comfortable enough to press "Buy Now". It's not there because you just really want to give people their money back. Obviously, you will if they ask you to, but the idea is this as a risk reversal. Also, you need to believe in your own stuff to say, "You know what? If you buy this and you use it, you should be really happy, so why wouldn't I offer you a guarantee?" I know some people who never offer a guarantee, and that's their policy. I think that since we are talking about writing sales copy that works, guarantees work. That's why people put them there. So, most people won't come back, and if they are legitimate "refunders" like, "I've tried it, and it's not for me," then I don't want their money. Neither should you. Actually, I've had to refund a couple of things that really weren't what I thought they were, and the people were super-cool about refunding it. I went on social media and said, "Oh my God! These people were so awesome. You know, I asked for a refund, and they said 'no problem'. They just gave it to me." They probably got more mileage out of me saying how great they were that it was worth way more than the sale would have been to them.
