When you live up north, where the winters are really cold, one of the best times of the year is the day when you feel spring coming. That first hint of warmer temperatures.   With the time change, there's longer sunlight at the end of each day, the birds start chirping, and everyone starts thinking about what they're going to do with this warmer weather.   And the lakes that have been frozen over solid for a few months? That ice starts to melt. And there's a danger in walking out on the ice, because you can't always tell if your next step will be the one where your foot goes right through. And then you're in ice-cold water – and it's not that easy to get out on your own.   My guest today is Maggie. She lives on a big lake, and one day recently when the ice was getting thin, she was thrown into a situation where she had to do an ice rescue.   And within minutes, Maggie herself needed to be rescued.   If you want to contact Maggie –   Social Media: www.MaggieAndersonAuthor.com https://www.instagram.com/margaret.g.anderson/ https://www.facebook.com/MGAnderson321/ https://www.facebook.com/AuthorMaggieGAnderson https://twitter.com/MaggieGAnderson   And the socks that kept her feet safe - Bridgedale Socks - https://www.bridgedale.com/     Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/219   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. In this episode of the HVAC School podcast, host Bryan Orr and guest Ty Branaman have an in-depth, hands-on conversation about the philosophy, structure, and impact of GRIT Camps—workshops designed to introduce kids to the trades through immersive, practical experiences. The episode opens with reflections on a recent successful GRIT Camp in New Jersey, where both mentors and children gained new skills and confidence. Ty shares the excitement of seeing young participants, many of whom had never shown interest in school before, become deeply engaged in building, problem-solving, and learning from trades professionals. Parents noticed a newfound enthusiasm in their children, while mentors were invigorated by the opportunity to share their expertise and even learn new techniques alongside the kids. A central theme is the use of the Socratic method—teaching through curiosity, guided questions, and hands-on experimentation. Rather than providing step-by-step instructions, mentors encourage kids to make mistakes, ask questions, and discover solutions on their own. This approach fosters deeper understanding, builds confidence, and develops critical thinking skills. Bryan and Ty discuss the importance of meeting each learner where they are, allowing for individualized progress and ensuring that every participant, regardless of prior experience, leaves with a sense of accomplishment. The hosts also highlight how this method benefits mentors, many of whom find themselves learning and growing alongside the kids. GRIT Camps are designed like an “escape room” or adventure challenge. Each module—carpentry, electrical work, brazing, and more—presents real-world problems for kids to solve, emphasizing both safety and creativity. The hands-on activities are intentionally open-ended, allowing for flexibility and adaptation by different mentors and hosts. Safety is a recurring focus, with detailed discussions about best practices for working with tools, protective equipment, and managing risk, especially when introducing children to potentially hazardous tasks. The conversation also explores the broader societal impact of GRIT Camps, emphasizing the importance of restoring respect for hands-on skills and empowering both kids and mentors to build, fix, and create with confidence. Topics Covered in This Episode: The origins and goals of GRIT Camps The Socratic method: fostering curiosity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning Structuring camps as adventure challenges to boost engagement and creativity Safety protocols and best practices for working with tools and materials Teaching modules: carpentry, electrical work, brazing, and more Customization and creativity: allowing kids to personalize their projects The importance of respecting and restoring hands-on skills in society Encouraging contractors and communities to replicate and expand the GRIT Camp model The impact on kids, parents, and mentors—building confidence, skills, and community Reflections on neurodiversity, learning styles, and the value of practical education   Learn more about the GRIT Foundation at https://www.thegritfoundation.com/.  Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Bob Baxley is a design leader who has shaped products used by billions at Apple, Pinterest, Yahoo, and ThoughtSpot. During his eight years at Apple, he led design for the online store and the App Store, and witnessed the iPhone's transformative launch while working under Steve Jobs. A student of history turned software craftsman, Bob discovered his calling after exploring photography, filmmaking, and music, ultimately recognizing software as the most powerful creative medium of our time. Bob champions the moral obligation designers have to reduce frustration in people's daily digital interactions. What you'll learn:• Why design should report to engineering, not product• The “Beatles principle”—why the best products come from teams of 4 to 6, not 40 to 60• How to create design tenets vs. principles (with real examples)• The counterintuitive reason to delay drawing or prototyping as long as possible• Why software is fundamentally a medium, like film or music (not just a tool)• Why Bob “bounced off the culture” at Pinterest, and lessons from failure• The lunar landing story that teaches us about championing radical ideas• How to evaluate if a company truly values design before joining• The moral obligation of software makers to build great products—This entire episode is Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

When soccer star Sadio Mané from Senegal was playing for Liverpool in the English Premier League, he was one of the world’s highest paid African players, making millions of dollars per year. Fans spotted a picture of Mané carrying an iPhone with a cracked screen and joked about him using the damaged device. His response was unflustered. "Why would I want ten Ferraris, twenty diamond watches, and two jet planes?” he asked. “I starved, I worked in the fields, played barefoot, and didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. . . . [Give] some of what life has given me." Mané knew how selfish it would be to hoard all his prosperity when so many of his neighbors back home struggled under crushing conditions. Hebrews reminds us that this generous way of life is for all of us, not only for those who are wealthy. “Do not forget to do good and to share with others,” Scripture says, “for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (13:16). Nurturing a generous heart isn’t only the right thing to do, but according to Hebrews, generosity also makes God smile. Who doesn’t want to make God pleased? Generosity isn’t defined simply by how much we give. Instead, generosity refers to the posture of our heart. One thing we can do that’s “pleasing to [God]” (v. 21) is to simply open our hands and share what we have.

He claims over 1.5 million Ukrainian casualties, rampant corruption, and U.S. weapons ending up on black markets and even into the hands of cartels. Macgregor calls ongoing Western aid a deadly delusion meant to sustain PR, not peace. Turning to the Middle East, he warns that Netanyahu's ambitions and U.S. backing could ignite a regional war with global consequences. In this short podcast episode, Bryan talks about band-aids, hacks, and ethics. He explores ethical "band-aid" solutions and how to charge for them. He also covers the difference between patching up equipment ethically and unethical repairs. Temporary fixes and ugly permanent fixes fall into the ethical gray area for a lot of people, especially if technicians or HVAC business managers don't know where to draw the line between replacing a part completely and patching up issues. Patching condenser coils is an example of repair work that can be ethical. Some protocols say that the copper needs to be cut out and couplings need to be installed, but you can often patch tubing in areas where there isn't too much vibration. As always, you want to make sure that the system can hold pressure whenever you patch up a leak.  The ethics question comes into play when the longevity of the equipment or repair is questionable. Bryan draws the line when the system has structural integrity issues, including damaged fins and severe corrosion. Beyond a certain point, patching a system up either won't be effective or will be an added expense without a payoff. Some companies also strongly favor sales over repairs, so some of those decisions may also come down to company policy. The key to ethical and successful "hack" work is situational awareness; you need to know which repairs you're capable of, your company's policies, and the client's needs. You ultimately need to make sure your actions are legal and safe for you and the client.    Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? A full U.S. Marine battalion, comprised of more than 700 Marines, is now mobilized to respond to the deportation protests in Los Angeles. Though Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have both called for Trump not to use the California National Guard, some of 4000 guardsmen have also been activated. In order for members of the military to make arrests, Trump would need to invoke the Insurrection Act. So far, the military members may be an intimidating show of force against protesters, but they cannot take on law-enforcement duties. Why is Trump crossing this line? We will ask Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist and the author David Cay Johnston.Author Kyra Davis Lurie will stop by. She is a New York Times best selling author and screenwriter. Her new book, The Great Man, released today, is her first historical fiction novel. In this retelling of The Great Gatsby, the story is set among L.A.'s black elite. It's Tech Tuesday and our Jefferson Graham has some thoughts about newly released features coming to the next iPhones. The Mark Thompson Show 6/10/25Patreon subscribers are the backbone of the show! She built a loyal following on social media with her deeply insightful takes on dating, so sharp and relatable that even straight men are taking notes.Kane will be filming her musical comedy variety show Wife Material live at The Green Room 42 in New York City on June 18. With musical direction by David Dabbon (arranger for Oh, Mary!, Cat Cohen, Las Culturistas Culture Awards, SNL 50) and direction by Andrew Mullins. The special touches on super relatable topics about the endless, exhausting loop of modern dating. While today's society seems to enjoy and glorify pushing women back to the 1950s, Kane pulls inspiration from comedic greats like Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and more to turn and upend her perfectly set dinner table.Through original songs, sketch comedy, and unfiltered storytelling, Sydney takes you on a PG-13 (leaning R) rated journey through the most universal experience there is: falling in love. And then falling out. And then falling back in. And then regretting it. And then telling your friends you're done. And then you get over it. And then you meet someone new. And then you fall in love.
