When she isn’t performing at comedy clubs, like the Punch Line San Francisco or the Laugh Factory, she is playing colleges or presenting as a keynote speaker to children with disabilities. She also trains professionals, and she is part of a comedy troupe called The Comedians with Disabilities Act, which brings laughter and awareness to audiences of all ages across the country. If you think about someone that just happens to stumble on your book that’s on Amazon. What are they going to see first? The first thing they are going to notice will probably be the cover. Their eyes are going to be drawn to it, so you’ve got to have a great cover. The next thing they are going to look at is the title, or the main title. They are going to read that and think, “Is it good? Is it interesting?” The next thing might be the subtitle, but the second or third thing that they are going to look at is that little star and that little number, or maybe the big number that’s next to that star, that tells a person what’s going on with the book. They are going to look to see, “Does this book have 5,000 reviews?” Then, they are going to know that this is an offer that has been around a long time, or this is a celebrity… There’s a lot of, uh, promotion going on with this. Or, maybe they're going to see a couple of hundred and think, “Wow. This book is legit. Please welcome Pat to the show… Big Promise: Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing Well, I think that the big promise, as far as I am concerned is that a lot of people have questions about whether they should self-publish or seek out a traditional or indie publisher. I have done both, and I can easily share the pros and the cons of each approach. [bctt tweet="Whether you self-publish or traditionally publish, you will be part of the marketing and promotional efforts." via="no"] I think that before self-publishing became so easy, there really was only one choice, which was to approach a publisher or be approached by a publisher, write up a book proposal, create an outline, a sample chapter, and an analysis of the target market. You’d need to show how your book was different than other books. Those steps are all very important to make sure that you have a viable book, but the difficulty with traditional publishing is that, from an entrepreneurial standpoint, you do a whole lot of work, and you get small royalties in return. However, a traditional publisher, or an indie publisher, can open doors for you that you would have never had opened if you hadn’t been published. Please welcome Chris to the show… Promise: How to Pack Live Events with Your Target Audience The big promise is that I’m going to share with people how they can really pack an event with their target audience in order to build their business as well as how to really find their target audience. I’m going to share some tweaks in your thinking that will help you really reach the exact person you are looking for to help, and in the process, to make a living and make money. [bctt tweet="You have to understand that if you consistently do an event each year, the income can easily double." username="danielhall"] First of all, you should have an online presence of some sort. That is primary. Secondly, if you really want a rabid base of supporters, you either need to go out and speak at events, or eventually, I would highly recommend housing your own event. There’s no more rabid of a fan base than with a person that raises their hand and says, “I’m willing to travel to be in a room with you for a day or two days, and learn from you, and get infused with your culture, your philosophy, and your methodology.” You can’t ask for a better client, and those people tend to be your greatest clients, and your greatest, what I call, promoters of your brand and what you represent. In it, he describes how he built a company, basically, from the ground up, and then he was able to sell this company for millions of dollars. DeMarco is also the founder and administrator at TheFastlaneForum.com, which is a worldwide discussion forum that’s dedicated to the advancement of fast lane entrepreneurship. This forum has over 130,000 visitors a month, and it is one of the leading destinations for startup entrepreneurs and offers discussions on how to grow a business. What M.J. is really doing, overall, is calling out to folks that are tired of taking a “slow and steady” pace and the conventional ways of growing wealth and a business. Welcome to the show M.J. Promise: How to Found a Business on "Product-o-cracy" First, thanks for having me. I appreciate it. I would say that the big result we’re looking for today is how to create a business that is founded on what I call a “product-o-cracy”. That’s actually not discussed in Fastlane. It’s discussed in the new book that I released, but a product-o-cracy allows business owners to grow virally. It allows them to grow beyond a linear construct. Essentially, it puts them in the driver’s seat to, pardon the phrase, “print money.” [bctt tweet="A “product-o-cracy” is based upon a unique product offering/service that is not offered by someone else." via="no"] A good example of a way to look at this is that there’s always a restaurant in your neighborhood, or in your city, that’s always crowded, but they don’t advertise. That’s the essence of a product-o-cracy. It’s when you have a product that is compelled by word-of-mouth and there’s an expansion, so the need to advertise becomes secondary. So if they stop advertising, their business slowly starts to die. That’s the difference between just a regular old business and a company that’s running a product-o-cracy. A great example of a product-o-cracy is my book The Millionaire Fastlane. I think that I must have spent $3,000 in total on promoting it since it was released seven or eight years ago. The growth was not because I’m some kind of great marketer or because I hacked something. The growth was because the product was good enough for people to recommend over and over, and that, in essence, is the product-o-cracy. Post military, Matt worked in both medical and advertising fields, as a top performer. His long-term desire was to start a business, probably a lot like you, and to build a lifestyle based on freedom and choice. During a conversation with a good friend, that actually led him into a 10-year business quest that has brought Matt’s franchising company to the cutting edge of both vending and school fundraising industries. So, I had a good buddy at church who mentioned gum ball machines, and I got to thinking about it, and I was like, “You know what? It’s going to take a lot of gum balls for me to get where I want to go financially,” but those gum balls have over a 1,000% markup, so the margins are huge, and the machines do all the selling while you’re not there. So, I started, literally, with a $36 used gum ball machine from a guy that I found on Ebay, across Houston, where we lived at the time. That’s where and how I started this business. He’s the co-author of HarperCollins’ instant classic called Play Bigger: How Pirates, Dreamers, and Innovators Create and Dominate Markets. He’s also the co-host of the Legends and Losers podcast. On top of all of that, Christopher is a former three-time, public company CMO and entrepreneur. As a matter of fact, Fast Company Magazine calls him, “The Human Exclamation Point”. The Marketing Journal also says that he is one of the best minds in marketing, and The Economist call him, “off-putting to some”. At 18, he got thrown out of school, and with no other options, he started a company.
