Don Simpson was one-half of one of the most successful production partnerships in Hollywood history. His reality-distortion-field helped bring about films like Flashdance, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, The Rock, Crimson Tide, and Days of Thunder, films that collectively grossed more than $3 billion dollars. Don Simpson's life is a cautionary tale with an ignominious ending forever ensconced in Hollywood history. His appetite for drugs, prostitutes, plastic surgery, black Levi's 501 jeans (worn once and discarded), wrecking Porsches, pharmacology, peanut butter, and pizza got the best of him at age 52. Listen in for the outrageous tale of how a pudgy kid from Alaska talked his way into transforming big-budget Hollywood blockbusters for a new decade. For the second time this year, we discuss a Warren Beatty movie! This time for his 1998 political satire: Bulworth. Leading an all-star cast that includes some of our favorite character actors like Oliver Platt, Jack Warden, Wendell Pierce, and Laurie Metcalf, the movie was also directed by Beatty with a script that was worked on by the likes of Aaron Sorkin and James Toback. The mics kept rolling after this episode as we discussed another political satire from the year prior, Wag the Dog. When James Caan died last week at 82 it was cause for a pause of appreciation for the work he left behind. I went searching for a 70's Caan film I hadn't yet seen, having done most of his ouvre at one time or another. I settled on Czech filmmaker Karel Reisz' brilliant 1974 film 'The Gambler', based on a James Toback script and I'm so glad I did. Before jumping into that film, this episode offers a brief re-appraisal of Caan's work in 'The Godfather' and in Michael Mann's 'Thief' (Caan's favorite film role), and a consideration of the relationship audiences end up having with actors with long careers onscreen and in the public eye, human flaws and imperfections all.

Tanner tries to steer the conversation towards movies (namely more about James Toback and Alec Baldwin's "Seduced and Abandoned") but listen. The riffs will not be denied.

Filmmaker Charles Newland talks with Manuela about Harvey Keitel, the unsung hero of '70s American cinema but also a still curious and fascinating actor today. From his start in Martin Scorsese's feature debut WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR in 1967, Keitel has brought his sensitivity and his name to the first films of many directors that have since become legendary. Charles and Manuela discuss such debuts as Ridley Scott's fascinatingly strange film THE DUELLISTS, Paul Schrader's BLUE COLLAR, James Toback's disturbing FINGERS, as well as Quentin Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS, which Keitel also helped produce. With his ability to make his tormented characters somewhat likeable, Keitel established himself as a uniquely sensitive actor, working with boundary-pushing directors such as Jane Campion (THE PIANO) or Abel Ferrara (BAD LIEUTENANT). PS: This conversation was recorded a couple of days before the passing of Yaphet Kotto, who appeared in BLUE COLLAR as Smokey as well as many other films. This episode is dedicated to his memory. We start this week's podcast with a film that's making headlines: "Borat: Subsequent Movie Film" has gotten all sorts of press so Neil and Bill McCuddy have checked it out and not only will they tell you if it's funny, they'll also break down the controversial scene involving a national politician. Bill Bregoli tells us about "The Queen's Gambit" which stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a troubled chess prodigy. And Bill McCuddy updates us on James Toback's surprise release "Imperfect Murder." We also discuss the Showtime documentary series "The Comedy Store" about the famous nightclub run by Mitzi Shore. Neil tells us about a "Seinfeld" reunion show he saw (it's still available for you to watch too) as well as "The Witches" which stars Anne Hathaway as, you guessed it, a witch. Plus Bill McCuddy has a great film with a name we can't type here. Suffice it to say it's "&$%# House." And we also talk about the demise of Quibi, which apparently won't be missed. But we'd miss you, so listen in!!!
Our colleagues at "Here's the Thing" produced a great episode this week that we think you'll enjoy: Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey are the New York Times reporters who broke the Harvey Weinstein story. For five months -- perpetually in danger of losing the scoop -- they cultivated and cajoled sources ranging from the Weinsteins’ accountant to Ashley Judd. The article that emerged on October 5th, 2017, was a level-headed and impeccably sourced exposé, whose effects continue to be felt around the world. Their conversation with Alec Baldwin covers their reporting process, and moves on to a joint wrestling with Alec’s own early knowledge of one of the Weinstein allegations, and his ongoing friendship with accused harasser James Toback. The guests ask Alec questions about the movie industry’s ethics about sex and “the casting couch.” Over a respectful and surprising half-hour, host and guests together talk through the many dilemmas posed by the #MeToo movement that Kantor and Twohey did so much to unleash.

Our venerable co-host Russ is back and this time he's testing the new format with the head honcho (Sebastian, duh). This week, Russ surprises me with a cult-gangster film written and directed by the infamous leg-humping James Toback entitled FINGERS (1978). While I surprise Russ with an unusually slow, low-key american zombie flick that he's heard of, but never watched: DEAD & BURIED (1981)
An interview with writer, producer, director and actress Marianne Hettinger. Marianne Hettinger has always been fascinated by movement, absurdity and complexities of human relationships. This was already apparent in her first short film, "Shenanigans Point" in 2001. Budget: $6.95. She sees Woody Allen, Mike Leigh and Pedro Almodovar as her greatest inspirations. German press: Die Welt online, click Wikipedia and German Wikipedia for more info. Having come to New York alone as a teenager from a small town in Germany, she has found her own unique style. "I thrive in adversity. If people say I can't do something, I will use it as fuel to ignite my dream", she said after she won "Best Director" at the Detroit Independent Film Festival 2010 with her first feature "Mango Tango". Born and raised in Augsburg, Germany and then Leitershofen, a suburb with a population of only 2000, Marianne Hettinger saw the movie "An American in Paris" for the first time at age 5. This was the birth of her dream to come to USA to dance and act like Gene Kelly. it would take her 7 hours roundtrip to get to the closest dance studio in Munich by bicycle, tramway, train and subway. But that didn’t stop her. From "American in Paris" to "German in New York", Marianne arrived as a nineteen year old alone in Manhattan with only $800 in her pocket, not knowing anybody. Soon she was accepted by the prestigious National Shakespeare Conservatory on a scholarship to study acting and directing. Simultaneously she studied dance on scholarships at the Alvin Ailey School, Steps on Broadway, the Martha Graham School and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. At age 20 she wrote, directed and acted in her first play "Heaven & Earth" at the Cubiculo Theatre in Manhattan. Because of her femme fatale figure she appeared as a model in "Sports Illustrated", Elle, Men’s Health, Harper’s Bazaar, Self and on national TV. Marianne eventually turned down an exclusive modeling contract with the famous ELITE MODEL MANAGEMENT because of her passion for acting and dancing. The versatile actor has been featured in over 50 features, independent films and television shows and commercials. She’s worked with such acclaimed directors as Tim Robbins, Frank Oz, Michael Apted, James Toback and Warren Leight and was a member of the "A THEATRE CO" theatre company founded by Thomas Everett Scott. As an A-list dancer she’s brought down the house on Broadway in "Latin Rhythms" with Chita Rivera, in a duet with Antonio Banderas on the Late Show with David Letterman and as a solo guest artist with many national and international symphony orchestras and as a US and Canadian Ballroom Champion (American Rhythm and Theatre Arts). Combining her talents, Marianne came full circle in 2009 when she wrote, directed, produced and acted in her first feature film MANGO TANGO that won her "BEST DIRECTOR" at the DETROIT INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL as well as the "JURY PRIZE FOR BEST FEATURE" at the VENTURA FILM FESTIVAL and "MOST POPULAR FILM" at the "FUENF SEEN FILM FESTIVAL" in Germany. Marianne Hettinger makes New York City her home, a place that feeds her creativity. With her projects she entertains and touches people's hearts in her own unique way.
Ahhh, April. It's not summer yet, but the holidays are done, and in 1983, studios didn't know what the hell to do with themselves. Fassbinder's final feature film, some more teen sex comedies, a horror film that's barely a horror film, another horror film that is mainly a great poster in search of a movie, OJ Simpson and a dog, and possibly one of the best Italian knock-off post-apocalyptic films ever made... and that's just the start. Do you like Chuck Norris? Why? Even if you don't, though, holy cow, you have got to see Lone Wolf McQuade. That's really the big theme of the month... movies you've got to see for yourself. Sexy vampires, even sexier aliens, and the sexiest goddamn steel worker of all time. James Toback slimes it up, young Nic Cage charms the shit out of us, and something wicked heads in our general direction. All that plus the debut of one Samuel Muthaforkin' Raimi? It's a gift of a month, really. You'll see.
Guys: things used to be weird. In 1996, Beavis & Butt-Head Do America earned $61 million at the box office. Matt loved it as a teenager, and still loves it as an adult. But it leads to perhaps the biggest divide Laci and Matt have ever had on this podcast, as she is physically repulsed by it. What exactly is going on here? Then, in The Pick-Up Artist (1987), a film helmed by accused serial sexual predator James Toback, Robert Downey, Jr. is a sexual predator. But he's charming! So we don't know what to think. We get into our feelings about this baffling film. An award-winning film director, editor, and producer, Ambika Leigh joined the #MeToo movement in October 2017 when she, along with dozens of women, came forward to accuse Hollywood writer-director James Toback of sexual assault.
Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner, Louis CK and James Toback did not respect it. And the women who are now coming forward about their sexual abuse at the hands of these men are only now truly claiming it. "It" is their SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY—the right to control their own sexual and physical fate—not being subject to the demands, the whims, the control or the perversion of others. "Do you realize that in no country in the world, nor even the United Nations Human Rights Charter, is there any stipulation that women have the rights to their own bodies," says Dr. Saida Désilets, PhD. A thought-leader and speaker on the growing edge of researching ways women can use their minds, bodies, and spirits to create richer lives through their sensual selves, Dr. Saida serves as a guide to women who believe in transformation as a lifelong path of learning, discovery and walk to freedom. Join Dr. Saida Desilets and me on Tuesday, February 20, 10-11 A.M. CT US. We will be having a conversation about her passion and vision of healing and growth for women where SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY is the cornerstone for both sexes and is the foundation for building understanding, respect, compassion, and strength. A world where physical or psychological oppression is no more. And #METOO isn’t necessary.

Its the full ownership of ourselves and our body and our sensual/sexual nature. It is knowing that no person, institution, organization or government has the right to choose what we do with our pleasure, sensuality, sexuality and fertility. That is ours alone to choose. And now the quest is how to usher in a new path that brings men and women into right relation with each other...where SEXUAL SOVEREIGNTY is the cornerstone for both sexes, and is the foundation for building understanding, respect, compassion and strength. Rundown: We’re doing visit Dorking Out Studios and talk about some movie franchises that we’d like to see reboots. I think our picks will surprise you. One of the awesome things about Dorking Out Studios the complete lack of sexual abuse and harassment, which brings me to our second segment. Sexual abuse and sexual harassment: Is every man in Hollywood awful? We’re going to talk about it. And finally, Smith and our Star Trek experts Jeff Bond and Alexandra August talk about Sunday night’s Chapter 1 finale of “Star Trek: Discovery." Topic 1: Remakes, Reboots and Revivals... What we'd remake if given the chance Chris' Intro: A persistent theme on the show is remakes, reboots, revisits and revivals when it comes to the stories in pop culture we love. What separates something that could be a worthwhile reboot/remake, like The Thing, or Cape Fear, Oceans 11, 3:10 to Yuma or Casino Royale, and what makes something blasphemous, like a Casablanca, ET, The Wizard of Oz, Psycho, Back to the Future, Jaws or Airplane? We thought we'd hash it over then offer up our own ideas for rebooting existing properties we’d like to see. I suspect one or both will get us quite a bit of heat and hate mail, and I’m somewhat counting on it. Sonia: The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight) Chris: Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?! Well, give a look at Captain America: The First Avenger again...) Topic 2: OK, let’s talk about it: Sexual harassment in Hollywood, or how is Michael Bay not on this list segment?! Sonia's Intro: I don’t even know where to start with this one, so I’ll just start right here. For several weeks it has been nonstop raining sexual harassment allegations. Every day, another member of show business, whether it’s an actor, a writer, a director, a movie producer, is being accused of sexual harassment and sexual abuse. It’s a long list, but here’s just the ones I thought of off the top of my head and I’m leaving off the politicians like, you know, the President of the United States: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner, Bryan Singer, James Toback, Louis CK, Andy Dick and Dan Schneider. Oh, and let’s throw Bill Cosby, Woody Allen and Mel Gibson on this list, too. Every day I hear that another story is coming out and I think to myself, “Oh god. Please don’t be Weird Al Yankovic. He seems so nice.” I’m so proud of these brave women and men for sharing their stories. And to the people that say that they are just sharing their stories for publicity, “Go f*** yourself.” It’s not easy to tell these stories. There are much easier ways to get publicity. These stories make me so angry and so sad, but I’m glad that the truth is coming out. And these are just the actions of men in powerful positions. Imagine the stories of women who don’t work in Hollywood. I’ve talked a lot. Smith, what do you think? Is everyone in Hollywood the worst? https://www.avclub.com/an-incomplete-depressingly-long-list-of-celebrities-se-1819628519 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/11/10/us/men-accused-sexual-misconduct-weinstein.html Status Check: Star Trek: Discovery Episode 9 Joining us today to talk about the Chapter 1 Finale of Star Trek: Discovery is Jeff Bond, my favorite living pop culture critic. He wrote the book on STAR TREK MUSIC, has helped release the amazing STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES COMPLETE SOUNDTRACK boxed set, he even played Dr. Leonard H. 'Bones' McCoy on the late, great STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES. This December his new book, The Art of Star Trek: The Kelvin Timeline will be released and I will be reading by noon on Christmas day... AND Alexandra August, one of the quickest, funniest pop culture commenters we know, Alexandra August. You may know her as the co-host for the fantastic GOT Thrones podcast, from her writing at Geek Magazine. If you don’t, well, that’s your loss dummy! With the media spotlight firmly on the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner, and director James Toback, to name a few, it took courage for victims to come forward and open the flood gates of reports of abuse and rape against these industry moguls. The #metoo campaign has helped victims who may have […]
James Toback. What more can be said about him? Since the Harvey Weinstein debacle, the flood gates have opened in Hollywood. More and more people are coming out with their stories about abuse at the hands of the powerful. Now, this isn't big news, as people in the know have been talking about what's happened to them. Second and third hand stories, stories about the casting couch, and others like Roman Polanski that are "out there" preying on people. But the news really never reported this stuff. In fact, if you watch the news now, just a few weeks after Harvey Weinstein, it's mostly died down. There are still reports coming out about actors (Danny Masterson), agents, and more producers. But the problems are still there. Not everyone is taking it seriously, not everyone cares about what's happening, and certainly not everyone believes it. Which brings us to James Toback. James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, has been talking about James Toback for a long time. James Toback is accused of sexually harassing 38 women... oh, wait - here is the headline from the Los Angeles Times 200 more women share their James Toback stories after 38 accuse director of sexual harassment. Yup. At least 200 more women since the initial 38, have come forward to talk about James Toback. Yet he categorically denies everything. He hasn't apologized, in fact, he's done quite the oppostie, telling reporters and anyone that will listen, that everyone is full of shit and a bunch of liars. Except for one thing, James Gunn. Who has first hand experience with this piece of human garbage. James Toback tried his bullshit on James Gunn's own sister. Not once. Twice. Toback has also done it to close personal friends of Gunn's. So, is James Gunn a liar? What does he have to gain in all of this? Other than telling the truth? There are times, when doing the compelled #podcast, that we get disgusted. To the point of angry temper tantrums. Yet, we hold our anger in, because it's just not going to get us anywhere. The best we can do, for now, is to bring awareness to everyone that these predators are out there. It's not just predators like Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and James Toback. It's also not just Hollywood. This exists everywhere. Those who are in control will try to do what they can to use that power over people that they feel are weaker than them. I know, I've seen it first hand at every company I have every worked for. It has even happened at the company that I currently worked for. You know what happened? NOTHING. Absolutely nothing has happened. Because those who know feel like it's not their problem to get involved and some have merely forgotten because they have their own problems. Is it right? No. When confronted with doing the right thing because it's tough or not doing anything because it's easy, most will choose easy. So, all these women coming out about James Toback? They're liars? Doubt it. There are always going those that are trying to take advantage of the situation. But 238 women in this case have come out against Toback, have told their stories and yet the mainstream press seems to only care about ratings and the attitude of "what have you done for me lately", instead of beating this into the ground until there's a real change. Good times at Morongo. Heatwave. Pumpkin EVERYTHING! Matt Damon & George Clooney on Weinstein. James Toback 30 women come forward. Lisa Bloom vs. Kathy Griffin.
He prowled the streets of Manhattan looking for attractive young women, usually in their early 20s, sometimes college students, on occasion a high schooler. He approached them in Central Park, standing in line at a bank or drug store or at a copy center while they worked on their resumes. This guys name is James Toback. Google him. You people thought it was just Bill Cosby, then came Bill O'Reilly, now Harvey Weinstein, and there will probably be more. They would probably come after me, if they could read my mind – don't laugh Jay. KINGS IN THE MORNING, right here, right now.

Inspired by their shared re-evaluation of Blade Runner a few weeks ago, Matt and Ed talk about movies they misjudged, either because they dismissed them only to later discover that they were masterpieces, or fully endorsed before shamefacedly backtracking at a later date. They also discuss Netflix's decision to spend $8 billion of making original movies and $1 on marketing them, getting old, and James Toback. Ed also finds time to rail against Apple's truly appalling update to their podcasting app. 00:00:00 - 00:10:00 - Intro 00:10:01 - 00:33:54 - News 00:33:55 - 01:30:04 - Matt & Ed talk about movies that they were wrong about 01:30:05 - 01:38:29 - SRS Recommends & Outro

#MeToo #TellTheTruth #Compelled #RoseArmy
