— We are not here on Earth to be alone, but to be part of a living community, a web of life in which all is sacred. Ceremonies and rituals are powerful tools that promote and sustain healthy changes as we move though life's passages. They help you release old patterns, call in healing energies, bring empowerment to new intentions, honor rites of passage, and connect you with a deeper sense of support and guidance from Spirit in your life. Sandra work with you to create ceremonies that best support your intentions, and to honor your life transitions in a meaningful and sacred way. As a non-denominational ordained Minister of the Foundation of the Sacred Stream and Shamanic Practitioner, Sandra works with clients from diverse cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs and practices. Valeria interviews Sandra Lloyd — She is Urban Shaman, Shamanic Hypnotherapist, Spiritual Midwife, Modern Alchemist, Ceremonialist, Badass Cosmic Mother, Shamanic Healer and Speaker. As a Certified Hypnotherapist through the Foundation of the Sacred Stream in Berkeley, CA, Sandra has received expert training in Depth Hypnosis, Shamanism, Buddhist Psychology, Energy Medicine and Hypnotherapy. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology. Sandra's path of healing service has been informed by two separate diagnoses and recoveries from cancer, as well her work since 2004 providing hands-on, unconditional support and advocacy for pregnant and birthing women navigating the complexities of the initiation of birth and passage into motherhood. Energetically "holding space" in the birth environment, and grounded in her connection with spiritual allies, she has been privileged to assist the safe and empowering passages of hundreds of new lives into this world. In the summer of 2014, Sandra journeyed to Peru to join an expedition with Alberto Villoldo and Marcela Lobos of the Four Winds Society. Taking part in daily teachings and ceremonies, led by renowned medicine men and women, deepened her understanding of the ancient teachings of shamanism and of the Q'ero. She received the Munay-Ki rites of initiation directly from these master shamans and lineage keepers in ancient places of power in Peru's Sacred Valley. Since 2016, Sandra has continued her training in shamanic practices designed for spiritual evolution and healing with don Oscar Miro-Quesada, respected kamasqa curandero and altomisayoq adept from Peru, founder of the Heart of the Healer Mystery School and originator of the Pachekuti Mesa Tradition of cross-cultural shamanism. As a Shamanic Practitioner, Depth Hypnosis therapist, Ceremonialist and Birthkeeper, Sandra Lloyd/Urban Shaman brings ancient healing practices to guide her clients in addressing challenges that arise in relation to fertility, reproductive choice, pregnancy, miscarriage, labor, birth and the powerful initiation of Motherhood. She offers contemporary applications of shamanic practices (altered states/shamanic journey, regression, soul retrieval, power retrieval, removal of energetic interference) for releasing old patterns, uncovering and healing core woundings/trauma, and (re)connecting to one's authentic self. I'm so delighted to welcome on to the podcast Daniela Ekman, who is an Aware Parenting instructor and birthkeeper. Daniela shares about how she uses a lot of ancestral traditions and wisdom from South America in her work as a birthkeeper. She is from Venezuela. Daniela shares about her calling to become a birthkeeper, and the deep connection that she has with babies. This deep connection with babies is also what called her to become an Aware Parenting instructor. She shares about how much babies are affected by their experiences. We talk about how Aware Parenting helps babies stay connected with their innate presence. Daniela shares about experiences of reading my Inner Loving Presence cards, and how she feels when she does. She also talks about how she came across Aware Parenting when her first daughter was eight months old, when she was waking up many times at night. She shares about all the painful feelings and thoughts that she had when her daughter started to cry, before she found Aware Parenting. Daniela shares about how she could see the changes in her daughter almost immediately after starting to practice Aware Parenting. She was more relaxed and slept for longer periods. Daniela also shares how transformative Aware Parenting has been for her, such as in how she relates to crying and all feelings. She also explains the differences she experienced in practicing Aware Parenting from when her first daughter was 8 months old, and with her second daughter from birth. This includes how healing it has been for her first daughter, seeing Daniela listening to her sister's feelings as a baby. Daniela talks about how she first decided that she wanted to become an Aware Parenting instructor. We talk about how palpable the difference is when a baby or toddler has been brought up with Aware Parenting (whilst also reminding listeners that it's never too late to start!) She shares about what she observes in the families she works with, and in the Aware Parenting playgroup that she facilitates. We also share together about the effects of community support such as mother and baby groups and playgroups, and what a difference it makes when practicing Aware Parenting. We also talk about how being an Aware Parenting instructor is a continual learning journey. Chandani was a doula working within the system when she became pregnant with her first baby. Witnessing the trauma and high cesarean rate in the hospital, she knew she didn't want to give birth there and decided on a home birth. Although she entered the pregnancy with extensive knowledge about birth and hired a midwife, her birth ultimately ended in a cesarean after her midwife transferred her during labor. In the immediate aftermath, Chandani struggled to accept that this was her birth experience. However, as time passed, she began to reflect and realized that there had been red flags in her care, and her intuition had indeed been speaking to her. She also started examining other areas of her life where she wasn't being true to herself. By the time she was pregnant with her second baby, she was fully ready to step into her power and birth in a new way. Rather than hiring another medical midwife, Chandani chose a non-medical birth keeper who also became a friend. She emerged triumphant from that birth experience, feeling as though she could do anything. If you love the show, I would greatly appreciate a review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts! She chose to give birth in a midwife-run birth center, but her labor progressed so fast that they never made it inside, and the baby was born in the doorway! When she became pregnant with her second baby, she wanted a more autonomous experience, and chose to birth at home with just her husband and a non-medical birth keeper for support. Patience has an unshakable faith in the wisdom of the birth process which is inspiring and infectious. Kat's Birthkeeper Ali Coulas joins us today. We learn about her spiritual path to becoming a Labor & Delivery as well as what led her out of the system and into the sovereign birth world, where Kat was her first sovereign birth she attended. We venture to answer questions like: What does it actually mean to “hold space” for women? How can birthkeepers hold just enough space without encroaching to closely on a woman or just being a distant fly on the wall? How do yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) energies manifest themselves in labor and birth, and what does this mean for the type of birth we can expect to experience? We also delve into Kat's false pre-eclampsia diagnosis which Ali discovered after reviewing Kat's medical records from her first birth. You won't want to miss this! Unfortunately, birth sabotage happens all the time in the system, and you get to hear a few stories of this blatant practice in today's episode. In this episode of the Birth Like a Mammal™ podcast, Lindsay shares a fantastic discussion with Audrey Ross of @ajoyfulbirth where Audrey discusses the differences in her three births: birth center, home with licensed midwives, and home unassisted/freebirth. Additionally, she has free birthed another baby at home since we recorded this episode last month. Audrey truly understands what it means and feels like to give birth like a mammal.....and we get into it!Audrey has been dubbed "the meme queen" on Instagram for her clever and hilarious memes covering all things birth. She always hits the nail on the head while providing light-hearted comedy to us all! In her own words, Audrey's most important roles are wife and Mother of six children. She is a rebel at heart and an advocate for and educator on birth outside of the medical system. Audrey is a Birthkeeper (aka Authentic Midwife) and Birth Coach. She supports women in birth both virtually as well as in person. This episode is great for those of you wanting a home birth but feel like you need to hire a midwife to attend, or those of you with questions about home birth and how that differs from birth center or hospital birth. Lindsay and Audrey discuss the implications of where you choose to give birth on mammalian biology. Enjoy!Key Takeaways:Hiring "medical midwives" or licensed midwives typically does not lead to a mammalian/physiological birthing experience. Comparing a birth center birth to a home birth is not even comparable. The Mother-baby bond is severely impacted by the initial mammalian imprinting process in the immediate moments after birth. How significant our own births are in informing us about our world as illustrated by Audrey's children who came to her from foster care. Quotes from Audrey:"So then I started asking, what exactly does it look like to give birth physiologically?""They are just trying to save women from birth, and I cannot get behind what they are doing.""I left the grounds, I walked outside, I did everything they didn't want me to do. I refused their IV, I refused to put on their gown, I refused everything. But it was still all war. I never entered a place where my mind could get lost in labor.""That's when I chose to freebirth my third baby and that is like night and day. It doesn't even compare. I left that birth feeling like I've never been a more embodied person in my life. i had never felt more powerful, I had never felt more confident.Audrey Ross can be found at @ajoyfulbirth on Instagram. Victoria & Leonie, team NBF In this episode, we hear from Bria - a Londoner living in Grenada - and her solo freebirth in a London air bnb! Bria shares her experience of birthing her first child within the NHS. The way she was treated was a huge challenge; as a black woman, she was repeatedly dismissed, disregarded and disrespected. Having flown back from Grenada to birth in the UK, Bria found that she didn't receive the care that she needed during a vulnerable time of childbirth. Whilst pregnant with her second child, Bria shares a raw, mammalian experience that unlocked a new fierceness to protect her children. She poured herself in to birth prep, following lots of birth accounts online and booking sessions with birth workers. After struggles with the commitment from her partner, Bria decided to 'sack him' and realised she needed birth support from elsewhere.Bria booked a Birthkeeper/photographer to support her next birth and she threw herself in to freebirth prep. Freebirth/homebirth in Grenada wasn't an option, so she booked in to an air bnb in London. Juggling baby's imminent arrival and fast-approaching check-out times, this is a story that kept us on the seat of our pants!Bria's story is one of reclaimation, boundaries, calling in proper, loving care, and being witnessed in her experienced on a deep level. You will love my chat with Bridget Supple, an antenatal educator of over 20 years and the author of The Birthkeeper of Bethlehem! Bridget shares openly and vulnerably about the traumatic birth experience she had with her first child and how that eventually led to her becoming an antenatal teacher. She emphasises the sacredness and initiatory power of birth, points out that women have, to a large extent, been stripped off their power when it comes to the birthing experience, and introduces her recently published book; the paradigm-shifting Birthkeeper of Bethlehem, which shares the story of Salome, Mary' midwife and describes the powerful, rich rituals and rites associated with birth - including the post-natal time - that have been largely forgotten. Today on the A Pinch of Magick podcast, we're weaving a tapestry of tales and truths with Bridget Supple, an antenatal teacher with a heart full of stories and the author of the enchanting 'The Birthkeeper of Bethlehem - A Midwife's Tale'. We kick off with the sheer joy that non-fiction books bring into our lives, especially those brimming with stories. Bridget shares her insights on how these tales are not just narratives but pathways to deeper understanding and learning. Then, we dive into the profound world of rites of passage. It's a conversation that unfolds layers of meaning and significance, revealing how these milestones shape us. Bridget and I then get personal, sharing our own stories of pregnancy and the profound experiences of birth. She opens up about how her own C-section became a turning point, fuelling her desire to support others through this transformative journey. We discuss the idea or birth not just as a process but as a ritual, a rite of passage that alters you in ways you can't imagine. It's about the transformative power of bringing life into the world. The topic then shifts to the importance of choice in birthing, a critical aspect often overlooked. We explore the historical and current dangers associated with birth, shedding light on the wisdom that once thrived in our communities. We delve into the midwife of Jesus and Mary, unearthing tales and wisdom long buried. It leads us to discuss the demonisation of women throughout history and how their power and knowledge were systematically suppressed. What happens when you write women out of stories and history? We explore this, understanding the gravity of erasing such vital narratives. But it's not all about looking back. We talk about how people are now reclaiming this power, reconnecting to the seasons and cycles, and remembering the wisdom of their bodies. The conversation rounds off with the importance of support, friendship, and connection. It's a reminder of the power that resides within us and the strength we garner from those around us. So, settle in, get comfortable, and let's embark on this journey of rediscovery and empowerment together. In this episode we are joined by Lucy Baena - a Mother, Writer & Birthkeeper. Throughout her life Lucy has been given an array of diagnosis the first at age 7 when she was diagnosed as Dyslexic. At 15 she discovered she was Epileptic and a month after her 38th birthday she received her Autistic diagnosis. Lucy has struggled with a variety of complex health (& many mis) diagnosis over her life and learning that she is Autistic has had a profound impact on her understanding of her health and wellbeing. Since becoming a Mother 8 years ago Lucy has dedicated much of her time to being a Doula and Birthkeeping in her local community. Lucy was told that she would never have children so birthing at home as an Epileptic disabled mum was the achievement of Lucys life and has shown her she is made of pure fire. Lucy was disabled before she knew she was Autistic so her post diagnosis experiences are different to those who learn they are Autistic but did not already consider themselves disabled. Lucy believes in the power of wild places to heal and the sacredness of the natural world, especially the Ocean, and she now knows her Autistic brain sees things in the natural world that neurotypical people miss and she is full of awe daily. Kate and Amanda had the pleasure of interviewing Brenda Annen, an incredible Birthkeeper. They discussed the importance of physiological birth and debunked common misconceptions surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. Here are three key takeaways from the conversation: 1️⃣ Respect the natural progression: Physiological birth involves understanding and supporting the woman's body and the hormones that facilitate labor. By avoiding unnecessary interventions such as vaginal exams and rushing the process, we can create a more empowering birth experience. 2️⃣ Build a supportive team: It's crucial to have a strong support system during pregnancy and childbirth. In this episode, we hear from Kathryn in Leeds, as she shares the freebirth of her second child. Kathryn's first birth was what is unfortunately quite a common story; unquestioned hospital birth, labouring in the car park. After being refused entry to a birth pool in hospital, despite knowing she needed to be in water, things went down hill from there. Second time around, Kathryn had already begun to question things and describes "moving away from an abusive relationship" with mainstream maternity care. For her, it was a gradual process. Kathryn had a clear vision of her birth, which she held strong and, low and behold, it began the way she had imagined it. As her birth unfolded and became super intense, Kathryn shares how mindset shifts, affirmations and the support of her partner really helped her surrender in to the experience. She also shares her experience of her post-birth hospital transfer after a tear. Kathryn works as a Birthkeeper supporting freebirthing families, and you can connect with her on Instagram @mysacredbirthuk. ____________________________________________ AVAILABLE COURSES: Are you looking for a birth prep course created specifically for homebirthers and freebirthers? In this episode This is the fifth episode in a series of six where I am exploring how to cultivate alignment through each of the five elements. In this episode I invited Elizabeth Betwixt, a Women's Sexuality and Pelvic Care Specialist, a BirthKeeper and Somatic Movement Therapist & Teacher, onto the show to discus how we can work with and balance our water element. Elizabeth and I explore: Various ways the water element expresses through our second (sacral) chakra and how to balance them How important it is for all people (especially women) to connect more to their sensuality, sexuality, creativity and PLEASURE Eco-somatics and the many ways our bodies (and our physical issues) are reflected in the earth and vice versaHow stagnation in the second chakra can lead to all kinds of dis-ease such as fibroids, fertility issues, pain during sex or menses, relational issues, creativity blocks (and other un-pleasurable things). How listening and trusting the wisdom of our tissues can unwind old traumas and restore our physical vitality and so much more! About Elizabeth BetwixtElizabeth Betwixt guides women in the EcoSomatic Arts of Healing, Pleasure, Fertility, Birth, Ritual, and Movement. You probably know this story very well. It's a 2000-year-old story. It's the story of the birth of Jesus BUT I bet you've never heard it quite like this before. In this special bonus episode of the podcast, I'm joined by Bridget Supple who has written a book told from the perspective of the midwife who attended to Mary when she gave birth to Jesus. It's a fictional story called the Birthkeeper of Bethlehem. This is not the story of Jesus, but rather the woman who delivered him. Because it seems that the women were left out of the story. And Bridget wanted to reclaim this. It's a story that all mothers can relate to as it's a universal experience of birthing and those that support women in their birthing journey. Come join me as we explore this beautiful story. You can listen to the episode here: https://wisdomforworkingmums.co.uk/bonus-episode or via itunes, stitcher or spotify. Or you can find it on most other podcast platforms and apps. Could you do me a huge favour and share this episode with two or three working mums that pop into your head as you listen? After a failed induction, a very long bout of prodromal labor, and getting ultimately kicked out of her birthing center, Ita's first baby was born surgically, under general anesthesia, in Bali. After this birth experience, Ita had a hard time bonding with her daughter, and they struggled with their breastfeeding relationship. After that first tough year, and a move to the US, Ita became pregnant with her second baby. And as the pregnancy progressed, Ita felt increasingly called to freebirth this baby despite having initially hired a midwife. At 43 weeks and four days gestation (!) Ita birthed her baby in the sovereignty and safety of her own home. At the time of this recording, which was only 6 weeks postpartum, Ita says she can't wait to give birth again. After her dreambirth was taken away from her during an abusive, highly intervened with and traumatic first birth experience (following the diagnosis of Gestational Thrombocytopenia at 35 weeks) Kailah knew something wasn't right post birth and opened herself up to another way for her next birthing experience.Feeling unprepared and lacking the feminine guidance she desired in her first pregnancy (although she received continuity of care) and realising Private Midwifery and Doula support was unaffordable, she divinely reconnected with a friend who brought the idea of birthing unassisted into her consciousness.Kailah shares her pregnancy and labour journey, what she had to work through after the fear of "bleeding out" had been planted in her head by medical professionals first time round and the backlash she received from her family that did not condone her choices, one day after birth.--- Connect with Anita in Instagram @themidwitch Freebies: https://themidwitch.com/thecauldron Birthworker? After a traumatic and painful induced first birth, followed by a disconnected postpartum; Chantelle swore she would never birth in the same rural hospital within her South Australian town ever again.Chantelle shares her journey to an unassisted second birth, including her early birth and loss in between and the visitation form her Spirit Baby that guided her in learning to trust herself again. She shares the ways in which she navigated a wild pregnancy in a small Australian town and the boundaries required when those closest to her disagreed with her birthing choices. Chantelle describes the way every part of her sacred and powerful freebirth healed her, including the revisitation to the hospital she had sworn never to return to, after an issue with her placenta delivery. This episode came from deep within the archives of 2020 unedited interviews, and it couldn't be unearthed at a more perfect time as women and birthworkers are exploring women's rights in childbirth within the system. I had an in depth discussion with Tina Charlton, Freebirth Witness and Support, starting out with her research in Obstetric Violence in her home country of Germany and then within her second home, Australia. We touched on the questions that so many women ponder, and the facts so many mis-educate on: Is it really enough to know your birth rights? The loose language used around these.Even when you know them, are they going to upheld? Is anybody ever held accountable if they're not?We dove deep into the reframing of birth trauma by the system, the normalisation of inflicted birth injuries, the grooming of women starting in teenage years under the guise of reproductive health, how to truly research birth and educate yourself with independent information, what true birth trauma support looks like and who you should be turning to for that, what is consent, what is medical negligence and lastly - why are there so many men in positions of care within women's reproductive health?---Connect with Anita at www.themidwitch.comAnita Katherine, The MidwitchReconnecting you with your medicine, magic, & power.Follow me on IG: @themidwitchFreebies: https://themidwitch.com/thecauldronPregnant? Madeleine shares with us, what she describes as, the evolution of herself via the births of her 3 children. Starting out in the system with the belief that they were the experts on her body and her baby, to coming full circle and roaring her baby into the world unassisted and in her absolute power.Madeleine tells us how the 4 hour lecture from a Private Midwife was the catalyst to questioning everything she ever knew and had been told about birth, sending her on the trajectory of disallowing ANYONE telling her how her birth was going to be!
In today's episode Kel and I sit down to chat to Emily about birthing outside of the system. Emily is a mother of 2 who lives in Melbourne and works as an authentic birth keeper.Like so many birth workers, Emily had given very little thought to pregnancy and childbirth until she embarked on her own journey to fall pregnant. Following 14 months of trying unsuccessfully to conceive, Emily sought the support of an OBGYN and was eventually diagnosed with endometriosis. After undergoing a D&C and laparoscopy, Emily was told that she would never fall pregnant without the support of IVF. This advice didn't sit well with her. Instead, she decided to embark on a journey of research and discovery opting to instead pursue natural fertility therapies which resulted in her falling pregnant in just 3 short months. This process sparked a determination within her to follow her intuition and take responsibility for her own decisions moving forward. Emily went on to experience a positive and transformative home birth with her first child that opened her eyes to the short comings of the maternity system which most women currently give birth within. This experience was the catalyst to her discovering her passion for birth work.Emily now works as a Birth Keeper in the Melbourne region, serving women who wish to birth outside of the system and within their full sovereighnty. Determined to walk the talk, in March this year Emily went on to freebirth her daughter after experiencing a completely wild pregnancy, guided only by her intuition. This conversation is informative and entertaining. Throughout we discuss some of the challenges of our modern maternity system, what it means to birth outside of this system (including the logistics and legalities), why women choose this option, how Emily supports women in her role as a birth keeper and more. We hope you enjoy this episode. If you want to get in touch with Emily, you can find her:http://www.authenticbirth.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/the_authentic_birth_keeper/
I speak with Martina, who was reported, investigated and suspended as a Private Homebirth Midwife in Australia. After realising there was no way she could support a birthing woman wanting to birth at home on their terms, by remaining registered with the system, and noticing herself practicing differently in order to toe the line with APHRA - she saw clearly that she could not fix the system from within it, and resigned from the medical birthing system all together.Martina talks about her journey to, and within, Midwifery, the unregulated investigation process she was taken through and the famous twin birth attendance that was the catalyst for her journey of awakening. This is a transparent and honest discussion that every birthing woman should listen to, to understand what overshadows you when choosing a medicalised homebirth, as well as the woman you are hiring to be present at your birth.@themidwitchwww.themidwitch.com
Elizabeth M. Johnson talks to Dr. Hillary Melchiors about trauma informed care, empathy vs. kindness, and shifting her When Survivors Give Birth course online in this 38th episode of The Birth Geeks Podcast.
Today on the show I speak with Birthkeeper, educator and co- founder of H.E.R.B.A.L - Desirae Miller. Herbal is a Holistic Doula and Birthkeeper training and mainly focuses on Freebirth. Desirae really opened up my eyes to a whole new world of freebirth. We chat about the many varied reasons why women choose to freebirth and how important it is to respect a women's autonomy regardless of their choices. What I also found really interesting was her telling me stories of supporting drug addicted mothers to freebirth. Such an important section of society to support as they can often be the most vulnerable and underserved. We also chat about her births, how mindset is 90% of birth preparation, doing your own medical prenatal in pregnancy and ultimately just everything Freebirth. Enjoy!
