So while Derek (@CreaseAndAssist) was away, Theresa (@MNSOTA24) and Kalisha (@KalishaTownsell) had some things to say about the Minnesota Wild in his absence. It also appears that our listeners had a lot to say as well, especially by the number of questions received that they would love to ask Wild General Manager Bill Guerin. Theresa and Kalisha enjoyed answering those questions for you all (technical difficulties may have ensued), and we hope you love the sarcastic spin we gave them. They also discussed a poll in regards to how the fans are feeling about the organization in the remaining days of the season. And then, if they didn't answer enough questions, they answered a few more, and then gave their picks for the NCAA Men's Hockey Championship winner as well as a bit of general hockey news.If you would like to be a part of the conversation, please tweet at Derek, Theresa, or Kalisha, and use the hashtag #CreasePodcast, and we'll be sure to add it to the next episode.

Meet the lovely Kalisha from Texas, USA, who shares her inspiring story. Kalisha used to have debilitating monthly cycles that were so chronically painful that she would end up having to go to the A&E department at the local hospital; every month. Then the doctors would put her on an intravenous drip with pain medication to try and manage the excruciating pain that soared through her abdomen and body. Fortunately, Kalisha's sister bought my book called "How I Ended My Endometriosis Naturally" for her (which is available on Amazon). Although it was challenging at the start, she started to make the necessary lifestyle changes and within a few months, Kalisha's pain started to diminish and her visits to the hospital stopped. Whilst Kalisha still has some way to go on her EndoBoss® journey to reach her destination, she kindly reached out to us on Instagram and shared her great news of progression in the right direction! Listen to Kalisha share her inspiring journey and what is possible with the correct information and approach. As the Tasmanian proverb says "Little by little, little becomes a lot". Kalisha was also offered a coveted place in our EndoBoss® Coach Training Academy, to learn how to inspire and guide women with endometriosis to embrace their emotions and to become an EndoBoss®. Welcome back for the second episode of the second season of “Mental Health Trailblazers, Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up,” with our host, Indrias Kassaye. This week, Indrias discusses community engagement in research, the impact of elder care on caregivers, and Alzheimer's research with Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson, PhD, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC. Dr. Bonds Johnson is currently an Assistant Professor, Tenure track at Emory University's Nell Woodruff School of Nursing. Her research focuses on the mental health of African American individuals with dementia and their caregivers, beginning with early diagnosis and treatment.Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson believes her desire and love for psychiatric mental health, and family allowed her to pursue her Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification–among many other markers of academic achievements. Dr. Bonds Johnson recalls how her experience receiving treatment for a bad burn on her leg in college was the first time she realized she was more interested in pursuing nursing instead of becoming a physician. She observed that the doctor was constantly in and out of the room, but the nurse was always the one who stayed and got to know their patients, building rapport. Dr. Bonds Johnson took that interpersonal aspect of nursing and combined it with her love of psychology to further understand the mental health of African-American dementia dyads.Later in this episode, Dr. Bonds Johnson explains her hopes to improve health outcomes for African-American persons living with dementia and their families through the development of culturally tailored clinical interventions. Indrias and Dr. Bonds Johnson unpack the biases and issues at the intersection of medical research and diversity through the lens of dementia statistics. Together, they consider the value of caregivers while also providing suggestions for resources and a call to action to get involved with research. Dr. Bonds Johnson shares that she has recently been awarded a five-year grant to develop culturally tailored interventions for African-American persons living with dementia and their familial caregivers and how these families navigate the healthcare decision-making process. As a multifaceted scholar and professional, Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson has made a unique and impactful position for herself in the field of mental health nursing. In addition to her work as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson works as a PMHNP at Emory's Integrated Memory Care Clinic. As the light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter and brighter regarding COVID-19, parents and students are facing another major transition period. While it may seem exciting to head back to campus, for many students it might not be. During this time of remote learning, students may have lost a passion for learning. Children and adolescents have been significantly impacted by the pandemic in different ways. Now faced with another adjustment, what can we do as parents, caretakers, and teachers to support their mental health? Here at the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast, we aim to inform, educate, inspire, and increase understanding. Today's guest does just that. I am thrilled to have Kalisha Beard on for this episode to discuss how to address a child's lack of passion for learning. Kalisha works in private practice in Los Angeles and is passionate about supporting children and their families as they cope with mental health challenges, trauma, and life changes. COVID-19 certainly had an impact on her clients, and today she shares ways parents can help their children and teens through validation, observation, curiosity, and humility. It all starts with awareness and you're in the right place to begin. Show Notes: [2:52] - Kalisha sees children who have been impacted significantly by the pandemic. In the beginning, we all thought this would be a short-lived experience. [3:31] - A lot of children and adolescents that Kalisha sees are showing symptoms of clinical depression and anxiety. She sees incredibly bright children who harbor great disdain for their learning environment. [4:46] - Discussing the need for alternate learning environments, Kalisha explains that many students do not thrive in a traditional school setting and that can lead to mental health struggles. [5:44] - Many parents don't feel that they have a choice when it comes to school for their children, but there are alternative and affordable options. [6:58] - Students may be eligible for grants and financial aid for alternative learning options. It all starts with awareness. [8:15] - One of the things we need to realize is that validation for the thoughts and feelings of children and adolescents goes a long way. We need to be empathetic. [9:27] - Regarding lack of passion, Kalisha says we need to assess the cause of it. There could be underlying issues and she gives examples. [10:26] - Kalisha lists several things to look at during this assessment period. She also talks about the stigma surrounding neuropsychological assessments and seeing a therapist. [11:13] - It is important to make it clear to students that there are different ways people learn. [12:19] - Communication between the parents and teachers is also very important. It is up to a teacher to engage learners, but faced with the struggles of COVID-19, it has been difficult for teachers as well. [13:48] - Dr. Wilson points out other reasons why parent-teacher communication and relationships are very important. [14:39] - Emphasizing the need for an assessment, Kalisha explains how symptoms of anxiety can mimic other things. [15:50] - Clinicians do not assess for the purpose of putting a label on a child. They assess to understand them and help in a targeted way. [17:14] - There has been an increase in student suicide that has caused some school districts to fully open earlier than initially planned. [18:15] - One of the biggest things we need to remember is that with any big change, there is an adjustment period. This will include transitioning back to school in person. [19:12] - Kalisha advises parents to check in consistently with their children and teens and validate their feelings. [20:37] - What about the students who did better during remote learning? Those children and adolescents may have heightened anxiety about returning to campus. [21:45] - In addition to the world dealing with COVID-19, in the United States there has also been political unrest and a social justice movement. All of these things contribute to stress and in some cases trauma. [23:46] - It is important to pay attention to the whole child. Kalisha describes what this means and how many of the children she sees are more aware of what's going on than we may realize. [25:33] - Validation is the greatest tool for teachers, parents, therapists, and any adult who is in a place of responsibility with a child or teen. [26:52] - Kalisha and Karen discuss ways to support students who are feeling anxious about returning to their school's campus. Be present as much as possible. [27:46] - Our minds take us to the future when we feel anxiety. Kalisha advises to be mindful of this. [28:54] - To help a child find their talents and passions, parents need to also be sure to give them different experiences and see what they gravitate towards and why. [29:39] - Kalisha explains that we need to also plan for happiness. This coping skill is underestimated. Sometimes you need to actually schedule time for happiness. [31:40] - By taking time to schedule happiness and breaks from work and stress, parents are modeling this coping strategy to their children. [33:14] - Give worrying the attention that it needs, but put a time limit on it. This is something adults can and should do for themselves. [34:12] - Kalisha describes how she talks with her clients about this. What is the best outcome and the worst? But more importantly, what is most likely to happen? [35:16] - Kalisha emphasizes the most helpful abilities of a parent to support their child: the ability to observe, the ability to be curious, and the ability to be humble. [36:27] - Karen and Kalisha are both feeling optimistic. Scripture reminds us that we are created for and called to a life of service to God and others.Sacrificial love was modeled for us clearly in the Bible, but our culture often goes against this humbled surrender. What would it look like in your day to day life to life to offer your time, energy, and resources, or whatever it is God is leaning you towards and as a living sacrifice to our loving Father? Inside and outside the church these days, we see people searching and yearning to find their purpose, for their calling, as if it were one special thing and we might miss it. And there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that.It seems like everywhere we look, whether at work or in church or even online, we can find tests and tools to help us determine our personalities, our strengths, weaknesses and where we might fit best into the fabric of the world around us. But those boxes, though helpful, are not what defines us. More than anything, our purpose is to follow God and to rest in Him. To love God and to love people. But we can so easily get caught up in the striving and bending to the pressure to figure out our calling and our purpose and where we are supposed to fit, that we miss God entirely. The scripture we’ve been focusing on these past few weeks is found in Isaiah 30:15 which says, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength...” and many times we stop there. But the final words of that scripture are equally as important… “but you would have none of it.” Regardless of what social media says, or what the enneagram or any other test says about us, we need to let God lead us. Our potential in Him is not limited by a test or even a box we might put ourselves in. In His strength and by His power our potential is limitless, and in that truth we can find confidence, peace, and rest.Support the show (https://byfaithshespeaks.com/support/)

In this take away Kalisha talks about a season in her life as a worship leader where she felt like she was crashing and burning. It was hard and it required a realignment of her mind and heart. Choosing a posture of rest. Choosing to stop striving, and allowing God to work in that moment. She began to see that her expectations were much different from His plan for her. Her frustration drew her near to God and that place of rest brought her into a new, deeper worship in the most unexpected places. We hope that as you listen to Kalisha’s take away you will walk away encouraged in whatever season you find yourself in right now. That you would also make the choice to draw near to the Lord as you move forward and find rest.Support the show (https://byfaithshespeaks.com/support/)

Simply put, this audiobook is extraordinary. Narrator Karen Chilton portrays Autumn Spencer, whose twin sister, Summer, has disappeared from the roof of their building without a trace. As Autumn attempts to find out what happened, she becomes obsessed with the way that society treats black women—as if they are invisible and the violence perpetrated against them doesn’t matter. As her mental health deteriorates, Autumn reevaluates her trauma. Chilton provides an outstanding narration. Her pace and tone match Autumn's emotional experiences—her bewilderment and anger at the lack of results in the search for her sister, her frustration and fear about what happens to many women just like her, and her uncertainty over what comes next. Topical, timely, and beautifully written—this is a must-listen. Published by Recorded Books. Find the review of SPEAKING OF SUMMER at audiofilemagazine.com. As we go through life, we are always looking ahead, at our future self, our family, our professions with a natural desire to achieve in every aspect. But as Kalisha so authentically shares with us today, we see the world around us and our own lives differently when we surrender to Jesus. As 1 Corinthians 15:58 makes clear, we must be “steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work…”, meaning no matter what our role, we are to be laser focused on His work. And to know what that work is, we must be grounded in His Word. Before Christ there is a lot of ambition without purpose. But what He does with our lives, our surrendered lives, is so much better than what we could have imagined.Support the show (https://byfaithshespeaks.com/support/)
